Why we use Admob - A Minute Of Overpass - App Developers in the UK

04:05
A lot of the advice I get from other app developers is to change ad networks. While we've tried a lot of the networks out there (like Flurry, Chartboost, Revmob, etc), we keep coming back to Admob. In this week's Minute of Overpass, I talk about by we use Admob instead of the other networks. I also refer to our latest app for learning Chinese Mandarin called "Mandarin Study Cards". Mandarin Study Cards is currently available on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.mandarinflashquiz And our French version, "French Flash Quiz", is also available: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.frenchflashquiz For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. My name is Eric and I make Apps. Now this week I want to talk about why we use AdMob for all of our ads. Okay so as an app developer who has a lot of apps that are free on the market, one of the things I'm always thinking about it "How do I make money from them?" So the way we may money . . . and the way most app developer make money . . . is through advertisements within the app. In order to put ads with in the app, there's different ad networks you could use.

How to Learn to Develop Mobile Apps - A Minute of Overpass - App Creators in the UK

05:45
Last week, iClash asked us a question in the Youtube comments asking how to create a mobile app. I went into the deployment process, then he said "No, I'm a complete beginner. What language should I learn." This week, I attempt to answer iClash and list some of the programming languages and platforms he could learn. I also go a bit into my "learning to code" background and reveal the book that has had the most profound affect on my life (Hint: not a religious or self-help text). This week I mentioned the following languages and frameworks (and here are some links if you want to learn more): 1. Corona SDK: https://coronalabs.com/ 2. Javascript: http://www.w3schools.com/js/ 3. Lua: http://www.lua.org/ 4: Cocos2Dx: http://www.cocos2d-x.org/ 5: GameSalad: http://gamesalad.com/ 6: Appy Pie: http://www.appypie.com/ 7: Good Barber: http://www.goodbarber.com/ Don't forget to subscribe. Oh, yeah, and download some of our apps. They new language quiz games are a-maziiing! For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi, this is a minute of Overpass, my name is Eric and I make apps. Now this week I wanna talk about how to learn how to develop apps. There are tools out there where you could use to make apps without learning any code at all like there a, if you're gonna do a game, there's one called GameSalad, which is actually pretty advanced. You could drag things out to the interface and set triggers and stuff. A little bit like Scratch if you've used that before. A lot of kids use that. If you do things like business applications, there's one out there called Appy Pie, there's once called Good Barber. We're kinda working on something that's in the works at the moment. So there are ways of making an app without learning to code however, think of it like a using sentences. Like if we're gonna learn Italian, if you don't know Italian, and you were going to learn a bunch of phrases. Now those phrases will help you converse and will help you get by in Italy but they won't teach you how to make sentences. And learning to code is actually not as hard as you might think. I can't really go too much into it in such a short video here but one thing you need to understand is that you're going to be bad at it at first. So learning how to do some very basic coding, you're gonna make mistakes and you're gonna think that's it's not for you. But the truth is, the people who designed these languages, however misguided they might be, actually kind of hope that most people will be able to understand it. So, when you're learning a language, it's not not meant for you. It's kinda meant for everybody. It's like very fine level descriptions. It's like, like I said, you take a phrase, you take it apart, you get the sentences, you get the grammar - it's learning that grammar. It's not "not meant for people". I mean binary is not meant for people, code is meant for people.

How to get your App on the Front Page of Google Play - A Minute of Overpass

04:22
Have you really been using Google+ enough in your Android apps on Google Play? It’s one of the things that really gets overlooked. We’d all like to have an app on the front page of Google Play. That’s pretty hard . . . but you can get it on the front page for some people. Unlike other social media platforms, Google+ gives you a lot of advantages when it comes to your Android performance. And the beauty of it is you can include it in your app and not force the user to go back to the app store the way you do when you ask for a review. In this week’s Minute of Overpass, I look at how Google+ could affect how your app is viewed in Google Play. For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. About Overpass: Overpass is a mobile app development company based in the UK that actually makes money from its own apps as well as creating money-making apps for clients. Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi, this is a minute of Overpass, my name is Eric and I make apps. Now this week, I wanna talk about a very easy way to get yourself on the front page of the Google Play Store. Okay so a few days ago I got a comment from somebody named Kummetha asking how to get their app featured on the front page of the Google Play store for Android which sounds like a hard thing to do. I mean, we all, every single one of us wants our app featured on the front page of Android, however, there are certain things you could do that not a lot of developers do. And what I want you to do right now is, if you have an Android phone with you is, go have a look at it and have a look at what the Google Play page shows for you. Like for me, it will show "New & Noteworthy" and then it shows another section of a few "What's Hot" apps. But the third section down is a "Recommended Apps". So what it does is it recommends apps for me. So like, i'll show you a screenshot of what I see right now and what you see here is that the first one there is this Stair game. And the reason it says it's been suggested for me is because it's been plus 1'd by one of my users, or one of my friends, rather. So what this means is somebody I know, maybe someone in my circles, maybe somebody in my email, but somebody that Google considers my friend has plus 1'd this app. So most people, most developers, most everybody in general ignores Google Plus. As an Android developer, they provide libraries for you to just put a Plus 1 button in your app. So this is something that if you're using native development, it's something you probably shouldn't pass up on. Like if I show you the 'About' page for Ear Spy, we put the Google Plus button right inside there. So, unlike a review or rating where you have to actually bring people out of the app and go back to the app description store so they could leave it, a Google Plus is a button that you could put straight in the app. And what that means is that, in the case of the stair game, it ends up on my front page. So, if you could get enough people to go through and do a single click, so we're not talking about "Leave a Review", we're not talking about "Think from 1 through 5", just say "Plus 1 it" then, things start to spread a little bit more that way. It's very different than the way you would ASO or try to spread the word for an iPhone app.

Canned Text: The Clipboard Manager for iPhone, iPad and Android

02:32
Canned Text is a very simple app that allows you to store all your canned responses in one place and easily copy them into your emails, tweets, and other correspondence. On Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.canntedtext While working on a desktop computer, there are several applications and shortcuts which make automatic text very easy. For example, on my Mac I use canned responses in gmail and tools like aText for other text I routinely type. But on my Android and iPad, these tools don't exist. So, we created a very simple tool that will allow you to save what is on your clipboard for later. Canned Text can be used to store any often-used bits of text. This can include email signatures, tweets, support instructions, or just URLs you often send to people. Canned Text will allow you to --Save what is on your clipboard so you can use it later. --Quickly copy a canned response to your clipboard to paste into email, Twitter, etc. Here's how I use it . . . 1. I get a support email for another app (Ear Spy mostly) saying their unlock code does not work. 2. I open "Canned Text" and click the clipboard icon next to an canned response I saved earlier. 3. The canned text is copied to my clipboard (no messing around with long pressing to select). 4. I go back to the email and paste the text in. Simple This app is ad-supported. We are currently looking into more features to add to this simple app. For example, we would like to offer the ability to remove ads or sync data between your devices. Let us know if this is something you might be interested in. And PLEASE leave a review and let us know what you think. But I know you hate leaving reviews . . . because I hate leaving reviews. So, if you can think of nothing to say . . .just leave a review saying “Gnarly” if you love it or “Bogus” if you hate it. Or, just say “Eh” if you have no opinion. However, I love full and honest reviews as they really help us . . . but anything is good. How to increase App Downloads on Google Play Using App Store Optimization ASO- A Minute of Overpass

09:11
Even the most seasoned app developers will occasionally moan about Google Play download stats and how little they make from this huge platform. I'm very odd in this sense because I get most of my income from Google Play rather than iTunes connect. But marketing an app on Google Play is not easy and it takes a while to build a following. In this episode, I talk about how we approach keyword research and app store optimisation (ASO) for Google Play. And, hopefully , this will help you increase your Google Play App downloads. This week I wanna talk about how to increase your google play app store downloads. Today, I kind of wanna go through some of our strategies on keyword optimization for Google Play. There's a lot of advice out there on optimizing your iTunes page or your iPhone apps and there's lots of really good tools out there, we use sensor tower a lot. But for Google Play, sensor tower doesn't that great for us so we try other things. And if you just released a Google app, you may be experiencing this "Oh my God, it's not working" kind of feeling. And I know, I know the feeling so I kinda wanna show you the kind of things that we do. So let me show you Ear Spy here, which is our Google Play page for Ear Spy. And you can see here like on a consistent basis, we have some delays today, but we get a round off, between four to five thousand unique downloads a day, daily installs. It does really well and it brings in a lot of money. If I show you, but it wasn't always that way, if I show you like the all time growth here of this curve, you could see that we started off kinda small here when we started out a couple of years ago. We had like a what's new and noteworthy kind of bump and then it just sort of gradually grew over time and it was introducing new things. We see some spikes here when it gets mentioned in like Gizmodo or some other blogs and we see kinda how it grows. So that's the idea. We wanna have more apps like this where we have a lot of daily downloads, we have a lot of people installing it, a lot of people clicking on ads, or purchasing or upgrading to a bigger version. So let me contrast this with one we just released a few weeks ago, which is Algebra Study Cards. Now Algebra Study Cards, you see here we got a few downloads, sixty-five downloads, that was the day where I was running Facebook ads, so it didn't really compared to how much money we spent, it was not a lot of downloads. And we're lucky with this one, we're lucky if we get ten downloads a day. And this is typical of a lot of apps on Google Play. This is a lot of our apps. You put it out there and you have to try to get those keywords up. And keywords are the one way to improve the app ranking.I mean you could do ads like this but this ad cost, I think we spent about forty pounds, and we got hardly any return on it. I mean ads used to be so much easier with Facebook and Twitter and Ad Mob. But now, it's a much lower return on the investment. So this is to give you an idea when somebody goes in to Google Play is this organic searches or the things that you wanna really key for.

Now is the time for Hybrid apps - A Minute of Overpass : The UK App Developers

05:51
A few years ago, I wrote a blog post called "Phonegap vs Native" which explored reasons you would use Phonegap over native coding. It was a hugely popular post. And many people are still asking the same questions. . . . "is Phonegap good enough for my app?" And many app developers are still saying "stick with native". I, however, disagree. With the power of mobile phones and tablet increasing each year and the latest operating systems providing better support for mobile web, now is the perfect time to start using hybrids instead of native. In this video I mention quite a few frameworks. Here they are in case you want to investigate further: Phonegap: http://phonegap.com/ Cordova: https://cordova.apache.org/ Corona SDK: https://coronalabs.com/ Ionic Framework: http://ionicframework.com/ Xamarin: http://xamarin.com/ Crosswalk Project: https://crosswalk-project.org/ Seriously, if you are still coding native . . . you are probably paying too much. Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi this is A Minute of Overpass, my name is Eric and I make apps. Now this week, I want to talk about why you should be considering a hybrid framework when building your next app. One of the more contested topics in the app development field is the Hybrid Framework or PhoneGap, Cordova, Corona SDK (that kind of thing) vs Native debate. A few years ago, I mean this has been going on for years ever since the PhoneGap came out and just to give you an idea, just to let you know what a hybrid framework is if you're unfamiliar with the term, that's something like a, PhoneGap you may have heard of, its something that sits on top of the operating system. However, I think, one of the things that I contend over, specially now here in July 2015, if you are not using a hybrid framework, more often than not, you are spending more money than you need to. Now, if you're doing something that's really low level, say, you're using the watch or the heart rate monitor or something that's kind a new and you can't do to run these hybrid frameworks, yeah, by all means, go native but you do have two sets of cost. You have the Android development cost or the iPhone development cost. Many people would just ignore Android altogether so you have 80% of the market and just go for iPhone which delivers more money, but my opinion here, again for last few years, we have seen the hybrid frameworks have been really advancing, not only that, but because of Moore's Law, we've been saying the processing power of both the iPhone and the Android just getting more and more powerful each time where these little delays in things that little bit sluggish before hardly exist at all and you got things like the Crosswalk framework on Cordova which will take an old Android device which is used in an old Android browser and put the new Chrome browser into it and it just adds like 10 to 20 MB to the file but the performance boost is enormous.

The Value of App Ideas - A Minute of Overpass : Makers of Mobile Language Learning Games

03:44
I've been creating mobile apps for a long time. I frequently get offers to partner with people where they share their idea and I do all the work (for little or no money). While this may sound reasonable at first, I find that it really is a lot harder than most people think. In this minute of Overpass, I talk about the value of an app idea. We all have one. But what are they worth? Also, if you are an Arabic language learner, check out our newest language game called "Arabic Flash Quiz". Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi, this is A Minute of Overpass. My Name is Eric, and I make apps. Now this week, I wanna talk about the value of app ideas. So this week I wanna talk a little bit about app ideas. It's kind of a strange situation where we live in a world where we read a lot of stuff about apps making millions of pounds, millions of dollars. Somebody has an idea and they build it and then they become millionaires, which is a cool thing. I'm kinda hoping it happens to me, myself. However, people will contact, as an app developer I experience something a lot which, if you're an app developer you probably get this too, where people will contact you and say "Hey, I've got this great app idea and what I'll do is I'll share this app idea with you. If you go away and build it then you and I can share the proceeds fifty-fifty or sixty-forty or something like that.". And I just want to say a little something about app ideas and I don't mean to offend anybody. This is something that just is really strange is that an app idea, like a really good app idea, the best app idea in the world is worth nothing. It really is. The thing that makes an idea worth something is actually building it. I have so many different app ideas. So many things at the backlog of my brain. I have notes written down, I have project specifications that one of these days I'm gonna get around to doing that I started to see that actually building an app and marketing it is the easy part of something. A lot of times when people come and they'll say "I'll give you my idea, you build it and then I'll kinda help market it and then we'll share the proceeds" it really is like going to a builder and saying "I have an idea for a house and if you build it, then I'll help share and then I share in half of the ideas" which is really like giving somebody a ton of work. It's asking to invest lots of time and also lot of money in to a project without any guarantee that something is gonna work. It's like telling somebody you're really good at roulette and if they'll put the money down on the table, you'll give them the number. The app market is so finicky. I've released so many apps, some of them have done really well, some of them haven't done very well and it just really is kinda keep hammering away at it and it's a strange market. It's really strange the way that works.

How to Increase App Downloads with Localization For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. The biggest problem we app developers have is discoverability. When we release an app, the hardest part is getting people to find it. However, most developers focus only on one market and neglect the rest of the world. This week, I talk about some of my successes in increasing daily app downloads by making those applications available in multiple languages. What kind of app should you make? A Minute of Overpass: The App Developers in Oxford

02:23
You may really want to create an app but are not sure what kind to create. There are so many possibilities. I've done both utility apps and games and have some insights into this area. In this week's episode I ask and give my advice on the question . . . what kind of app should you actually create? For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. About Overpass: Overpass is a mobile app development company based in the UK that actually makes money from its own apps as well as creating money-making apps for clients. Before that, he was a Chinese Mandarin and Vietnamese Linguist for the US Army and then a school teacher. Now, he makes apps. Eric on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EricWroolie Eric on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+EricWroolie Transcription: Hi! This is a minute of Overpass. My name is Eric and I make apps. Now this week, I wanna ask, what kind of app should you actually make? Okay, so, what kind of app should you make? Now you might be at the beginning stages and you have a few ideas and you haven't created an app yet and you try to think, you know, what kind to make. I'll just give you some of my experience on this. We've done both normal apps, utility apps, and we've done games. So, what I find is that games are much more difficult to do. Not only are they more difficult to do in terms of coding and think of all the eventualities, and making sure they're fun and not too repetitive but you also can't charge very much for them. We're talking about sixty nine P, maybe a pound. Or you try to make money through ads and you have to hope that it really goes viral. You have to hope that it really catches on. However, with utility apps, if you make something very useful, you're basically taking somebody's phone and turning it into something better than it was when they found it. So, for example, with Ear Spy, we're taking somebody's phone and we're turning it into like a super spy device or even just a hearing aid, or better yet, we're turning that user from just a normal person into a potentially a spy. Which is kind of exciting but is also something that when they're going through, when they run out of disk space on their phone and they start removing apps, when they see your icon, you kind of want them to say, "No, I might still need that.", which you might not do with a game. Don't get me wrong. People do some really good games out there and they do make a lot of money from it, however, my advice is if you're thinking about an app idea to begin with is, if you have a really good utility idea that's not out there already, that makes people’s lives easier, go with that. I mean, that would just, you know, you could charge more for it, you find the right niche, and people really go for that. So that's it for this week's minute of Overpass. Now, if you're watching this on the iTunes podcast, please leave a review. Love to hear what you have to say. And if you're watching this on the YouTube channel, please subscribe to our channel so we can let you know what we think each week. Talk to you next week.

Software Developer vs. Business Owner - A Minute of Overpass: App Development Company in England

For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Sometimes people ask me why I hire developers instead of just coding everything myself. The truth is, there is a big difference in mentality between being a developer who makes money to produce code and being a business owner who tries to make money from the results of that code. How to Release an iOS App to the App Store - A Minute of Overpass

18:48
When I first started creating apps, I found the procedure for deploying to the app store to be very complicated. You can't just upload it. In fact, most books will tell you all about how to code an app, but the procedure for uploading to iTunesConnect changes all the time. I've been wanting to make this video for a while. I hope it helps those new to creating iPhone apps. Sorry, it's a little long (when isn't it?). The big joke is I still call this the "Minute of Overpass". :-) In this video, I talk about an app called "Vietnamese Spy : Hanoi Ops" which should be released soon. Paid App or Free with In-App Purchases? A Minute of Overpass : The UK App Designers

03:46
A lot of app developers are concerned with this question. Monetizing apps is serious business. It's what separates the professionals from the hobbyists. And, there are a lot of experts that are waiting to tell you the best way to do that. However, if I had listened to those experts, I would have significantly less money today. The truth is, there are no experts when it comes to publishing apps. They market just changes too quickly. You really need to experiment and try new things. For example, most experts will tell you to concentrate on in-app purchases instead of full versions of your app. Now, that makes sense when it comes to games or other types of apps. . . but for other, like mine, it does not. In this week's Minute of Overpass, I show you my stats for February 2015 and how most of my purchases are from paid apps. About Overpass: Overpass is a mobile app development company based in the UK that actually makes money from its own apps as well as creating money-making apps for clients. We have our ideas and build them. We can build your ideas too. If you haven’t started creating your mobile app yet, you are already behind. Or email us at [email protected] Overpass on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+OverpassCoUk/ Overpass on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OverpassApps Overpass on Twitter: https://twitter.com/OverpassLtd About Eric: Eric Wroolie is the owner of Overpass. He has built software and web-based solutions for very many large and small companies including Macmillan Publishing, RibbonFish, BNP Paribas, Barclays Capital, Deutsche Bank, BBC Worldwide, CircData and Omega Logic. Before that, he was a Chinese Mandarin and Vietnamese Linguist for the US Army and then a school teacher. Now, he makes apps. Eric on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EricWroolie Eric on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+EricWroolie Add me on Snapchat! Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Okay. So the biggest concern you should have when creating a new app and the biggest concern I have when creating a new app is how you're going to make money from it. The wisdom at the moment with app experts is that they will tell you, don't worry about doing that full version of the app. Nobody is buys apps anymore. You're just wasting your time. What you should do is have a free version of the app and then use upsell in-app purchases in the app to get them to upgrade. However, I just want to show you my statistics for my apps here. Now these are for February, going back just a couple days ago. Here's the statistics for Google play. Now here you can see that 68% of people would prefer to buy the app out right. So they try the app. They like it. Rather than mess around with in-app purchases, they go find the full version and download the whole thing. It's easier for them. It's easier for me. It's easier for everybody. However, some people just prefer to buy bits and pieces. So like 31% use in-app purchases in the app. It's contrary to what a lot of people will tell you, at least in my case. For me, full sales work but you need that free version out there otherwise nobody won't buy anything that they can't try. For iTunes, it's completely different. iTunes, I only make 2% of sales through in-app purchases. 2% are through bundles of apps and 95% are just people going in buying the full version. So it's different from what you may see. Now the point that I'm trying to make is not that one is better than the other. In some ways, in-app purchases are much better than full versions of the app. So, if you have like a game you kinda expect people to play a game up to a certain level then go download a completely different app and then play the rest of it and other things that require customization. For example, you don't want to go through the whole experience again. They should just be able to go and purchase it. But the point I'm trying to make is be careful of what app experts are tell you. Now, there are no hard and fast rules in app development. All apps are different. All audiences are different. If I took other people's advice on what I should do with my apps, I would probably lose half the revenue because I'm going to get those full sales of the apps.

Promoting your app with Ads - Twitter Ads, Admob, and Facebook Ads - A Minute of Overpass

11:55
Last week, Erik Javier asked about promoting apps using iAd. I told him a little bit about the ad networks and how I use them. He asked me to focus a little more on that. So, here it is laid bare . . . here's how I use the follow ad networks: -- Twitter Ads -- Facebook Ads -- Admob Using ads is a funny thing and a tricky economy. This episode is long . . . but hear me out and hopefully you'll learn something. And don't forget to like and subscribe. For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. About Overpass: Overpass is a mobile app development company based in the UK that actually makes money from its own apps as well as creating money-making apps for clients. Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie So I'm gonna go through the three different ad networks that I've used in the past. If you use something different and if you had success, please leave a comment below 'cause hey, I'd love to know what works and what doesn't and I'll tell you what's worked and what hasn't for us. So over here, if you look at my screen, you see first I'll go through Twitter. So, Twitter has Twitter Advertisements ad if you're an app developer and if you tweeted about your app, then you probably get the spam from Twitter saying "Hey you could promote this through Twitter." So we tried this last October for an app called Chinese Heroes. So, I didn't spend a lot on this. I think I had a daily budget of four pounds and it didn't even use four pounds each and I think it was targeted towards people who said I wanna learn Chinese and learn Chinese and stuff like that. So here you can see the statistics for that time. Over the course of the month, we had two thousand or 2.63 thousand impressions and we only spend four pounds, forty seven. So it wasn't bad, however, because we had a daily budget of four pounds, I expected to be spending a lot more than that. And of that, we didn't have that many installations so if you see down here at the bottom, we have the date, we spent four pound forty-seven, we had 2,631 impressions, however, only eleven people clicked on that ad. So it was 41 P per click. And Twitter, as far as I was concerned, this didn't work very well. As far as I was concerned, advertising on Twitter was like throwing money into the wind. Now again, maybe my ad sucked, maybe the app wasn't that interesting, but I don't think it got in front of enough people. So the nature of Twitter is everything is just streaming by so quick, it's hard to stop and look at it. And, plus, it's not difficult to go through and do a Twitter search and search for these people manually and you just sort of spam them and send tweets or whatever yourself, but I don't do that. So that's the first network. It's Twitter and again, hardly worth it.

Zero Budget App Marketing Tips

12:32
Zero Budget App Marketing Tips (The Daily Overpass #127) App Marketing is one of the toughest things we do as app developers. It's something I spend a lot of my time thinking about... and I admit that I'm not an expert. I try things and sometimes they work ... sometimes they don't. Today, I answer the request of Abby Dabby to talk a little bit more about this. I hope it helps. Ultimately, I don't think a huge marketing budget is necessary-- just like I don't think you need to spend tons on an app developer. Some things you can learn yourself. Anyway, these are just my ideas. I also mention our new merchandise shop which we are working on. It can be found here: https://shop.spreadshirt.net/overpass/ Are you a fan of the Overpass company? How Much Should You Charge for Your App? A Minute of Overpass - UK App Developers

07:01
Pricing your app can be tricky. Most apps have very small prices and rely in heavy volume to make a profit. This week, I talk about how I charge for apps and the strategy I use. In this episode, I mention Ear Spy and Read Racer -- two of our apps: Ear Spy: iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ear-spy-super-hearing/id576341356?mt=8 Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microphone.earspy Read Racer: iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/read-racer/id698681986?mt=8 Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.fastreaderlite For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi, this is A Minute of Overpass. My name is Eric and I make apps. This week wanna talk about how much you should actually charge for your app. So this week, what I thought I would do is talk to you a little bit about my experience with the price of my apps and how that how things have actually turned out and hopefully that helps and all that kind of stuff. So basically when I released my first app called Ear Spy, we released a free version which had like ads and like one in app purchase which i think was mp3 recording and we also had a paid version. So like the free version, I think we charged like $0.50 for each of the in-app purchases, if I remember correctly. It was like three years ago and the paid version was was like 99 cents or 69 p in the UK and my logic at the time was how could anybody say no to that. It's like the lowest price and if I can just get enough people then I can make a good amount off of that. And what I found was it didn't get all that many purchases. I mean, I would get like maybe a few dozen a day. Some days I would get a few dozen, some days I would get 5 or 6, some days I would get none. But I can't quite figure it out because the the actual free version was going up and up in downloads and ad revenue was actually surpassing the purchases. So there's a whole bunch of things in play there that you know. Everytime when I hear something, like I meet with a client and they'll say, "Well what we'll do is we'll charge just like a small amount because then we'll get lots of people" or they'll say we'll charge a lot and then not have a free version ‘cause we have a free version that we're practically just giving it away. And what I find is that strategy doesn't work at all. One time I did release an app as a paid version only. It was called Read Racer. So we released the the the paid version and I thought, this time no ads, we're going to market it really well, we're gonna have a video, all those kind of stuff. And you know, it got some downloads but it was hardly any. I think after a couple weeks maybe we got, maybe 10. It was hardly a thing so we did release it as a free version. So don't fall for the whole "if it's cheap then people will buy it" because that's not the case. It's a bigger case. If you're going to release an app and if you're gonna charge for it, charge a decent amount it. Don't ever charge $0.99.

Now of the things I started doing recently is spending about one minute each week to talk a little bit on camera about Overpass, the app industry, our apps and how we work. So, I'm going to go ahead and start the timer now. Now, this week I want talk a little bit about Ear Spy and privacy concerns because nobody cares more about privacy than I do. I'm a very private person despite the fact that I'm making a video on Youtube, of course. But I do respect people's privacy. Ear Spy's obviously not a private application. We market it to ear spy to people. The majority people use it as like a hearing aid to hear better which is basically all it does. We don't do anything sneaky. We don't sent anything to a server. You can't post anything to the Internet. Every few days somebody posts a review. We read all reviews. Everyday somebody posts a review every few days saying that we're planting a virus or stealing information. I just want to tell you that's not true. Overpass is a very small company. It's me and some developers in the Philippines and in India. We use Google Analytic. See here we use Google Analytic just like a website. And we use AdMob to serve ads. So, if you are clicking on the ads in Ear Spy, that's helping paying for it. Thank you very much. Time's up but rest assure we're not stealing your data. I don't care who you are. I'm glad you use it. Leave a comment. Let us know how well you like it. That's it. I'm Eric. If you need an app or you need help with an app, give me a call. I'll be glad to help. We have some really great developers who love to help you. And thanks! Enjoy Ear Spy. I really hope you like it.

Is it worth uploading your app to the Amazon App Store? A Minute of Overpass - The App Developers

Username: eric.wroolie https://www.snapchat.com/add/eric.wroolie Transcription: Hi, this is a minute of Overpass. My name is Eric and I make apps. This week, I ask, is it even worth putting your app on the Amazon store? Few weeks ago, I made a video about us reaching the 3 million download mark on our apps. So, I've showed you a graph of how many apps we get by market. I've showed how many we have from Google Play, iTunes, Amazon or Samsung and I also referenced a lot from the smaller markets. And I was speaking to somebody and he said "I had no idea there were so many different markets out there." and it's strange that most people don't really consider the non-mainstream ones. We think about Google Play. We think about iTunes. Amazon is a big player but even then most people don't seem to publish to that. This week I kinda want to talk about whether or not it’s even worth doing. Amazon is kinda strange because it’s so easy to take a build from Google Play and move it to Amazon. That's if you don't include things like, links to back to the app to do your ratings. You have to kinda configure that kind of stuff so it goes back to the same place. Or if you are using Google Play's leaderboards, those are not gonna work on Amazon. If you have anything within your app, just try bring in more engagement thru the Google Play's ecosystem. If you don't have anything like that, it doesn't make any sense not to push it to Amazon. Now, having said that, Amazon can be a bit high maintenance. We've had this over and over again where we get an email from Amazon saying "We noticed that your version of Eye Spy on Google Play is 1.22 and on Amazon it's only 1.21 and under the Terms and Conditions it's going to be the same version. It's like a girlfriend who's saying that why don't you notice me anymore. And you say "Oh, yes I forgot about Amazon" so you have to publish to there but it really only takes a few minutes. One thing you need to think about if you have designers or things like that is, the file sizes for Amazon are a bit different. Like for the screenshots sizes, the text, but many times it's really just taking it, what you put in to Google Play and making it applicable to the Amazon market. So your app descriptions will be the same, the keywords - there's a keywords field in Amazon so it's much more like iTunes than it is in Google Play so you can take those keywords in put those in there. And like I said a few weeks ago, we don't get very much from Amazon. However, if you're releasing a free app, you kinda want everybody to see it.

Balsamiq for App Developers - How we user Balsamiq for Mobile App Wireframes - by UK App Developers

10:16
There are lots of wireframe tools out there for mobile apps. Most of them are online and require a monthly subsciption. They're also pretty slow. But we use Balsamiq religiously while creating app specifications for the mobile apps we make for clients. It's fast and efficient. In this video, I show you two quick examples of how we use Balsamiq desktop. Balsamiq has been around for a long time, but they're still the best. You can purchase Balsamiq at http://balsamiq.com/products/mockups/ About Overpass: Overpass is a mobile app development company based in the UK that actually makes money from its own apps as well as creating money-making apps for clients. What makes more money? iPhone or Android? A Minute of Overpass

11:27
Making money with apps is one of the issues of biggest concern with clients and other app developers. Most of us tend to choose the platform we like best and not which one is the most beneficial. In fact, I've known a lot of app developers that insist on using only one platform when they could possibly release to both. This week, I show you my revenue for last month, compare revenue between iPhone, and look at which one is actually better for making money with apps. Your App will get Copied (and that's okay) - A Minute of Overpass - UK App Developers

Last week I released a video on the Overpass channel (an informal Minute of Overpass) which I showed an app that was plagiarising Ear Spy. After a few comments and on reflection, I thought I would talk about what I consider to be "copying my app" and what are legitimate imitations. I also talk about how it was resolved with the developer. For more videos and articles like this, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Apps are an Investment - A Minute of Overpass

07:13
It's really easy to lose sight of the business side of creating apps. Sometimes, they're just fun to make and we forget all about monetization. In fact, you'd be surprised at how many developers or clients pitch me an idea and have no idea how it will make any money. But, creating an app is an investment. And, increasingly, it's a high risk one. In this week's Minute of Overpass, I talk about apps as an investment and a little about the business side of app development. For more like this, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Apple Rejections and Approvals - A Minute of Overpass : UK App Developers

07:37
This week I've been dealing quite a lot with Apple Rejections. This is nothing new. Apple rejects a lot of things. In fact, some developers won't develop for iPhone because they don't like the approval process. This is crazy since they are leaving a lot of money on the table. This week, I go through my recent rejections and some of the ones I've had in the past. Apple rejections are a fact of (app developer's) life, and they are nothing to be ashamed of. We released a new game this week, and we were able to do it quicker than ever before. The last game we did in 6 weeks, this one took us less than a week. The next game will take us a couple of days. We can do this because we created a framework and not just a single app. In this week's episode of "A Minute of Overpass", I explain how a theme works and why you should really consider creating one for your next app. In the video, I mention two of our most recent apps . . . Algebra Study Cards: on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.algebrastudycards on iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/algebra-study-cards-ultimate/id979967363?mt=8 and French Flash Quiz: on Android (coming soon to iPhone): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overpass.frenchflashquiz For more information, visit http://www.overpass.co.uk. Now this week, I wanna talk about why you should consider creating an app framework instead of just creating an app. Okay, so this week I wanna talk about frameworks. We released an app this week called French Flash quiz which took us just a few days to develop. It was fantastic! And the reason it took a few days to develop is because we've already done much of the work with the last application. So, a few weeks ago, we released Algebra Study Cards, which is a quiz game, which, you know, lightning fast, it generates Algebra questions and you have to answer them very quick. I'm really really very proud of it. However, it took a bit longer to create because we weren't thinking in terms of "we're just gonna this one app". It was in terms of "we're gonna build an app framework". So, we wanna build a framework that we could use to create other apps, other similar apps of the same way. So, to give you an idea what I mean, if you're gonna develop a single app. say for iPhone, what you get is you get a diagram like this over here. So it's like basically all phones are, and all computer are, everything is just hardware. So it's, you know, it's ones and zeros. Everything flying through. If you're a hardware guy, you don't think in terms of operating system or you think about how the operating system handles telling the camera to take a picture and say one phone may be different from another phone. So that code might be different. So that's where the operating system comes in. Like iOS, is an operating system. Android is an operating system. And what that does is give a consistent interface and say every time it takes a picture, depending on which device it is, just call this function and the operating system will handle how to implement all that. So that's fantastic. That's an operating system. And then your code, of course, sits on top of that operating system and you write your native code. Now the problem with that is that if you do like more than, like if you do Android and iPhone, then you have to sets of code which sit on two different operating systems. Our early apps were like that, and it's a pain. It's like every time we update something, we have two different skill sets to somebody to go through it and make changes.

Be Careful Which Ad Networks You Use In your Apps

Can choosing the wrong ad network be bad for your app? (The Daily Overpass #237) Note: Towards the end of the video, I said "Amazon XD" and I meant "Adobe XD". Be Careful Which Ad Networks You Use In your Apps - The Daily Overpass #237 One of the reason I stick to AdMob (and very rarely change) is that I fear what other SDKs will put into my apps. Today, I talk about a recent news story about inappropriate ads in apps that got apps removed. Are you a fan of the Overpass company?
