Analysing Compiler Optimization Effectiveness on Adapteva Epiphany, ARM and XMOS platforms

05:56
http://jpallister.com/wiki http://ww.cs.bris.ac.uk/Research/Micro http://kck.st/PtAZ9O http://www.adapteva.com Energy efficiency is the highest priority for modern software-hardware co-design. The potential for compiler options to impact on power consumption of running programs has often been discussed. However there has never been a comprehensive analysis of the magnitude of that impact, or how it varies between processor architectures and compilers. Our presentation will describe a project we undertook during the Summer of 2012 at the University of Bristol Department of Computer Science and funded by Embecosm, to explore the effect of compiler options on energy consumption of compiled programs. We used an innovative technique to examine the energy consumption of 10 benchmarks when compiled with 87 optimizations performed by GCC and run on five different embedded platforms. Hardware power measurements on each platform were taken to ensure all architectural effects on the energy were captured. A fractional factorial design was used to separate the effects of each optimization and account for interactions between optimizations. The use of this technique, not commonly used in computer science, has made it feasible to analyse 2^87 possible combinations of optimization over the short period of this project. We found that in the majority of cases execution time and energy consumption were highly correlated, but the effect a particular optimization may have is non-trivial due to its interactions with other optimizations. We also found that the structure of the benchmark had a larger effect than the platform on whether the optimization had an impact on energy consumption. No one optimization is universally positive for energy consumption, but for each benchmark and processor architecture we were able to find the optimization with the main effect on power consumption. There is clearly scope for further work on selecting the optimizations that are most beneficial for an individual program. Our presentation will discuss techniques that can potentially achieve this goal, and are the potential subjects of future research. This research was unusual, in that it was funded as a completely open project. A wiki detailed progress from week to week, the relevant open source communities were kept regularly informed, and the results will be published in open access journals.

Provenance for System Troubleshooting

01:04:25
Google Tech Talk October 2, 2012 Presented by Marc Chiarini ABSTRACT System administrators use a variety of techniques to track down and repair (or avoid) problems that occur in the systems under their purview. Analyzing log files, cross-correlating events on different machines, establishing liveness and performance monitors, and automating configuration procedures are just a few of the approaches used to stave off entropy. These efforts are often stymied by the presence of hidden dependencies between components in a system (e.g., processes, pipes, files, etc). In this presentation, I argue that system-level provenance (metadata that records the history of files, pipes, processes and other system-level objects) can help expose these dependencies, giving system administrators a more complete picture of component interactions, thus easing the task of troubleshooting. SPEAKER INFO Marc Chiarini (key-uh-ree-nee) worked in IT for 10+ years before returning to Tufts University and receiving a PhD under his advisor Alva Couch. He likes to float on the thermals between theory and practice and his primary goal is to improve the lives of those in the IT admin community. To that end, he has researched and written on digital provenance, autonomic computing, performance analysis, virtualization security, dependency analysis, system configuration management, and system administration. In 2010 Marc began a two-year computing innovation postdoc at Harvard under the tutelage of Margo Seltzer, and will be seeking a research position in academia or industry starting in 2013.

More success followed, yet technology was still driving change and Oscar saw another opportunity for reinventing himself as a media prognosticator. He produced a daily Youtube Video "Live with Oscar", featuring bold predictions of the coming day's trading in select futures, Oscar stuck his neck on the line daily. And people began to flock to his site for his projections, his analytical education and yes, even his motivational presentation. Since becoming a Youtube personality, Oscar has been profiled in various publications, inspired imitators and was even parodied in the Eddie Murphy movie "Imagine That". With his loyal fan base, the 'Omniacs', following his every move, Oscar has cultivated a persona that is undeniably original. However, his is not a case of style over substance but rather substance with a unique style. It is his straightforward, humorous and immensely captivating presence and uncanny predictions that has people clamoring for more.

Hacking Remotely with Undetectable Backdoor

03:20
A new undetectable backdoor crypter for metasploit payloads! :) Credits go out to @LHYX for the code, I could'nt find a link on him tho. ARTICLE & FILES: http://technicdynamic.com/2012/04/hacking-remotely-with-undetectable-backdoor/ You are going to have to place it in the metasploit directory! On Backtrack 5 R2, the directory is: /opt/metasploit/msf3/ Then, we have to make it executable with the following command: chmod +x crypter.py Make sure you have mingw libraries installed: apt-get install mingw32-runtime mingw-w64 mingw gcc-mingw32 mingw32-binutils Now go ahead and execute it! Fill in the options to craft your backdoor! The script will automatically launch the listener for you, in my case, since I selected the windows shell payload it launched netcat. From there we wait untill the victim(s) executes the backdoor to spawn a shell in our listener... More hacking? The class materials are available at http://www.OpenSecurityTraining.info/IntroX86.html Follow us on Twitter for class news @OpenSecTraining. The playlist for this class is here: http://bit.ly/IILMeN The full quality video can be downloaded at http://archive.org/details/opensecuritytraining Intel processors have been a major force in personal computing for more than 30 years. An understanding of low level computing mechanisms used in Intel chips as taught in this course by Xeno Kovah serves as a foundation upon which to better understand other hardware, as well as many technical specialties such as reverse engineering, compiler design, operating system design, code optimization, and vulnerability exploitation. 25% of the time will be spent bootstrapping knowledge of fully OS-independent aspects of Intel architecture. 50% will be spent learning Windows tools and analysis of simple programs. The final 25% of time will be spent learning Linux tools for analysis. This class serves as a foundation for the follow on Intermediate level x86 class. It teaches the basic concepts and describes the hardware that assembly code deals with. It also goes over many of the most common assembly instructions. Although x86 has hundreds of special purpose instructions, students will be shown it is possible to read most programs by knowing only around 20-30 instructions and their variations. The instructor-led lab work will include: * Stepping through a small program and watching the changes to the stack at each instruction (push, pop, call, ret (return), mov) * Stepping through a slightly more complicated program (adds lea(load effective address), add, sub) * Understanding the correspondence between C and assembly control transfer mechanisms (e.g. goto in C == jmp in ams) * Understanding conditional control flow and how loops are translated from C to asm(conditional jumps, jge(jump greater than or equal), jle(jump less than or equal), ja(jump above), cmp (compare), test, etc) * Boolean logic (and, or, xor, not) * Logical and Arithmetic bit shift instructions and the cases where each would be used (shl (logical shift left), shr (logical shift right), sal (arithmetic shift left), sar(arithmetic shift right)) * Signed and unsigned multiplication and division * Special one instruction loops and how C functions like memset or memcpy can be implemented in one instruction plus setup (rep stos (repeat store to string), rep mov (repeat mov) * Misc instructions like leave and nop (no operation) * Running examples in the Visual Studio debugger on Windows and the Gnu Debugger (GDB) on Linux * The famous "binary bomb" lab from the Carnegie Mellon University computer architecture class, which requires the student to do basic reverse engineering to progress through the different phases of the bomb giving the correct input to avoid it "blowing up". This will be an independent activity. Knowledge of this material is a prerequisite for future classes such as Intermediate x86 (playlist:http://bit.ly/HIaD4O) , Rootkits(playlist:http://bit.ly/HLkPVG), Exploits, and Introduction to Reverse Engineering.

Agile C++ with Supporting Eclipse CDT Plug-ins

52:13
Google Tech Talk January 23, 2012 Presented by Peter Sommerlad. ABSTRACT At IFS institute for software several plug-ins have been developed for Eclipse CDT easing the live of Agile C++ developers. Some of the features have already been integrated into CDT's main feature, such as the refactoring infrastructure and some refactorings, like toggling function definition and declaration. In this talk Prof. Sommerlad will present how IFS's plug-ins ease an agile style of development, through code-generation for Test-driven Development (TDD), unit testing, code generation for test doubles and mock objects, quick feedback for static analysis tools and quick-fixes for problems. Also an alternative to Googles IWYU (include-what-you-use) using CDT's built-in infrastructure to interactively optimize #include dependencies is demonstrated: Includator. In addition to removing unneeded #include directives, Includator also adds missing #include directives for used elements. In contrast to IWYU the interactivity of Includator allows easy preview of proposed changes and interactive selections of proposed changes. The talk itself will demonstrate the well established and some "bleeding edge" Eclipse CDT plug-ins developed by IFS in a Test-Driven Development session. If wanted, a glimpse of C++11 features is possible, as far as they will be supported by CDT and his available compiler at the time of the talk. Speaker Info: Peter Sommerlad is professor for software engineering and director of IFS institute for software at HSR university of applied sciences Rapperswil, Switzerland. His students and team at IFS were among the first creators of Eclipse Refactoring plug-ins for the languages C++, Ruby, Groovy, and Scala. Peter is co-author of the books Pattern-oriented Software Architecture - A System of Patterns (Vol.1) and Security Patterns as well as other patterns and articles.

[ Car in India ] Renault Duster SUV under Rs 10 lakh

01:18
renault duster 2012 at Geneva Auto Show 2012 renault duster 2012 india renault duster interior renault duster review renault duster 2012 interior renault duster india launch renault duster off road 2012 review renault duster test drive Renault Duster SUV Review .The renault duster 2012 will be launched in the "middle of the year", quoting from Renault India's own words during the 2012 Auto Expo. We expect the Duster SUV to be priced under 10 lakh rupees. Meanwhile, here's a list of key features you could look forward to on the Duster SUV. Renault India, will do a Logan reprise when it launches the Dacia Duster SUV badged as the Renault Duster for India, in the second half of 2012, as a low cost SUV to be priced under 10 Lakh Rupees. Renault India though will hope that the Duster SUV doesn't meet the same fate as the Logan. This low cost SUV could have a lot going for it in India and here's exactly why. India is a country whose road infrastructure is rapidly developing. But, at the same time, there are plenty of bad roads or even no roads in a large part of the country where a Sedan's suspension and under body face a lot of trouble negotiating. It is precisely in such conditions where the low cost SUV which can seat 5 adults comfortably and costs slightly lesser than the C+ segment sedan will make a bunch of sense. Also, over rougher roads, an SUV can maintain a higher speed comfortably and let you reach your destination faster with peace of mind unlike a sedan, where you'l have to constantly slow down for potholes and worry about the under body and suspension getting damaged. So, the low cost SUV is what a lot of Indians want to buy, but for the lack of viable options in the Indian market, which offer both comfort as well as ruggedness. While vehicles like the Mahindra Bolero and the Maruti Gypsy do exist, the former is too utilitarian and the latter having a bone jarring ride that would leave most of your family fuming at you every time you drive across the slightest of road imperfections. So, a comfortable and rugged SUV under 10 Lakh Rupees is just what the Indian market is looking for and the Renault Duster could very well fill that void. Renault Duster Overview Stylish Chrome grille Twin barrel headlamps 16'' Alloy Wheels, Front Fog Lamps Keyless entry ABS with Brake Assist & EBD Dual front Airbags Plush Leather Upholstery 4 Speaker Music System with USB, AUX-IN & Bluetooth Connectivity Satellite Audio & phone control Rear Defogger, rear wiper & washer Electrically adjustable ORVMs Rear parking sensors A Boot capacity of 475 litres.
