The first pilot to my Essay Tips series! I share my method for reading and understanding a journal article or paper quickly and efficiently including how to take good, concise notes and remember useful citations. If your method differs from mine or you think you can give me some pointers then let me know in the comments! This is the first in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. Note: The programme to the left (which I highlight in) is Mendeley. Apologies for forgetting to state this in the video!! If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. My tagging system was borrowed from this article on The Thesis Whisperer: https://thesiswhisperer.com/2015/10/28/how-evernote-can-help-you-with-your-literature-review/ Further Reading The Academic Skills Handbook by Diana Hopkins and Tom Reid US: https://amzn.to/2NBDAnf UK: https://amzn.to/2NBJIfb The Study Skills Handbook by Stella Cottrell US: https://amzn.to/2NDeIvh UK: https://amzn.to/2OTyneu [The above are affiliate links. How to write a literature review

09:21
How to write a literature review. It’s easier than you might think! In this video, I demonstrate how to search the literature and identify relevant papers for your literature review. I do a pubmed search using Boolean operators and MeSH terms (these are extremely powerful tools that will help you sift through the large number of academic papers out there). So if you’re doing a master’s thesis or a PhD, or you’re doing research and writing a paper, at some point, you’ll need to do a lit review. A big part of that review is the search and this video is going to help you get that right. You might be doing a systematic literature review or meta-analysis – again, you’ll need to do a good PubMed search that identifies the right studies. Thanks to BMC !!! ----------------------------- This video was sponsored by BMC – (click here to go to BMC: https://goo.gl/RFaUA2 ). As a pioneer of open access publishing, BMC has an evolving portfolio of high-quality peer-reviewed journals including broad interest titles such as BMC Biology and BMC Medicine, specialist journals such as Malaria Journal and Microbiome, and the BMC series. BMC is committed to continual innovation to better support the needs of research communities, ensuring the integrity of the research we publish, and championing the benefits of open research. BMC is part of Springer Nature, giving us greater opportunities to help authors connect and advance discoveries across the world. I’m particularly excited about having BMC’s support because I’ve been working with them for nearly 15 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Globalization and Health. I’ve been extremely impressed by them as a company that has integrity and that is truly making the world a better place. LEARN MORE about literature reviews ------------------------------------------------------------ Of course, there is more to a literature review than just the search. You need to have a structured approach to selecting paper, extracting data, writing the review itself and creating a bibliography. For more detail on these aspects of a literature review, go to www.learnmore365.com where I have a full course on literature review (it takes about 30 minutes to complete). Ethics Video Series: Publishing in Journals

09:01
This fourth in a series on Ethics of Research and Publishing discusses questions of: Can I take a paper that I published in a lower tier journal and submit it for a publication in an Academy journal? Can I submit the same paper at the same time to more than one journal for publication? Can I resubmit a paper that has previously been rejected at an Academy journal when a new editor takes over the journal? Should I correct inadvertent errors found in my data if discovered after the paper is published? Interviews include: Angelo Denisi, Tulane University; Jim Walsh, University of Michigan; Linda K. Trevino, Associate Editor, Academy of Management Review (1996-2008); Amy J. Hillman, Arizona State University This series was developed by the Ethics Education Committee of the Academy of Management as an initiative resulting from the Strategic Plan of the Academy. 17:12
"How to Write a Literature Review in 30 Minutes or Less" breaks down this academic assignment into 5 easy steps: (There is a text version of this video: http://www.peakwriting.com/litreview/Index.html 1. Strip out summary paragraphs from research 2. Reorder summary paragraphs for the liteature review 3. Combine paragraphs if necessary 4. Add topic sentences and transitions to form literature review's body paragraphs 5. Add introduction and conclusion paragraphs to complete the literature review The literature review does not have to be a daunting or mysterious academic assignment. As a matter of fact, the so-called "literature review" is a common task in the professional workplace but is called a "backgrounder" or "background research" instead of a literature review. The video provides a real-world example of writing a practical literature review as an HR employee in an IT company. Stop being intimadated by what is actually an easy assignment by learning what a literature review really is and how to do one quickly and easily. Management vs Leadership

05:34
This videos looks at management vs leadership skills by comparing the similarities and differences between leaders and managers to give you the opportunity to see where you fit the picture. FREE 7 Instant Tips for Confident & Composed Public Speaking http://bit.ly/2M1NfVE-SpeakingTips Before digging in, the first takeaway is that managers are tied to an official position. Leaders can lead from anywhere. Further, there are no 100% managers or 100% leaders. Virtually everybody has to do some aspect of both. Managers: - Control mindset - Administration of process and resources - Want to maintain the status quo - Task-focused Leaders: - Persuasive communication - Want to take us from "here to there" - Take Risks - People focused Sources Consulted: Alex Lyon's Book: Case Studies in Courageous Communication: https://www.amazon.com/Case-Studies-Courageous-Organizational-Communication/dp/1433131242/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1483651791&sr=1-1 https://www.amazon.com/Leading-Here-There-Study-Guide/dp/0310080878/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486765986&sr=8-1&keywords=from+here+to+there+bill+hybels http://guides.wsj.com/management/developing-a-leadership-style/what-is-the-difference-between-management-and-leadership/ http://www.educational-business-articles.com/leadership-versus-management/ https://www.simplilearn.com/leadership-vs-management-difference-article https://www.resourcefulmanager.com/leaders-vs-managers/ https://hbr.org/2013/08/tests-of-a-leadership-transiti My Current Camera Gear (Affiliate Links): Camera Rebel T5i https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BW6LWO4/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00BW6LWO4&linkId=504e12f13100f143d4df4e79731f206a Lens Canon 50mm: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X8MRBCW/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00X8MRBCW&linkId=b0bfb7ea7439df39e744bfd303c53fee Lavalier Microphone Rode Smartlav+: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EO4A7L0/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00EO4A7L0&linkId=c29c80d531374d347f8a78498b34d05d Audio Recorder: Tascam DR-05: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OU2IQG/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004OU2IQG&linkId=578b149b5807f2ec0f7f16c18e1c34f4

What does HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT mean? HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT meaning - HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT definition - HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Human resource management (HRM or simply HR) is the management of human resources. It is designed to maximize employee performance in service of an employer's strategic objectives. HR is primarily concerned with the management of people within organizations, focusing on policies and on systems. HR departments are responsible for overseeing employee benefits design, employee recruitment, training and development, performance appraisal, and rewarding (e.g., managing pay and benefit systems). HR also concerns itself with organizational change and industrial relations, that is, the balancing of organizational practices with requirements arising from collective bargaining and from governmental laws. HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. It was initially dominated by transactional work, such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advances, and further research, HR as of 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion. Human Resources is a business field focused on maximizing employee productivity. Human Resources professionals manage the human capital of an organization and focus on implementing policies and processes. They can be specialists focusing in on recruiting, training, employee relations or benefits. Recruiting specialists are in charge of finding and hiring top talent. Training and development professionals ensure that employees are trained and have continuous development. This is done through training programs, performance evaluations and reward programs. Employee relations deals with concerns of employees when policies are broken, such as harassment or discrimination. Someone in benefits develops compensation structures, family leave programs, discounts and other benefits that employees can get. On the other side of the field are Human Resources Generalists or Business Partners. These human resources professionals could work in all areas or be labor relations representatives working with unionized employees. In startup companies, trained professionals may perform HR duties. In larger companies, an entire functional group is typically dedicated to the discipline, with staff specializing in various HR tasks and functional leadership engaging in strategic decision-making across the business. To train practitioners for the profession, institutions of higher education, professional associations, and companies themselves have established programs of study dedicated explicitly to the duties of the function. Academic and practitioner organizations may produce field-specific publications. HR is also a field of research study that is popular within the fields of management and industrial/organizational psychology, with research articles appearing in a number of academic journals, including those mentioned later in this article. Businesses are moving globally and forming more diverse teams. It is the role of human resources to make sure that these teams can function and people are able to communicate cross culturally and across borders. Due to changes in business, current topics in human resources are diversity and inclusion as well as using technology to advance employee engagement. In the current global work environment, most companies focus on lowering employee turnover and on retaining the talent and knowledge held by their workforce. New hiring not only entails a high cost but also increases the risk of a newcomer not being able to replace the person who worked in a position before. HR departments strive to offer benefits that will appeal to workers, thus reducing the risk of losing corporate knowledge.

Engaged Management ReView - A new journal for practitioner scholars

09:39
Kalle Lyytinen, Editor-in-Chief of the Engaged Management ReView (EMR) journal, and Director of Academic Affairs for the Case Western Reserve University Doctor of Management programs, discusses the goals of the journal which is to help practitioner-scholar research gain legitimacy and visibility with practitioner-scholars, academic scholars, and to communicate new research findings to management practitioners who are interested in applying the research to practice. The journal has three genres to communicate research: 1) papers that report empirical research results about understanding and solving compelling problems of management practice; 2) papers that suggest new perspectives, theories or findings which can inform practitioner-scholar research; and 3) papers that report experiences of practitioner-scholars in applying new research results into their practice.

A Pluralist Conceptualization of Scholarly Impact in Management Education: Students as Stakeholders By Herman Aguinis, Ravi S. Raman, Nawaf Alabduljader, James Bailey, and Joowon Lee Scholarly impact is typically conceptualized and measured as an internal exchange that occurs among researchers in the form of citations in journal articles. We offer an expanded conceptualization and measurement of scholarly impact by investigating knowledge transfer to a critical management education constituency: students. To do so, we investigated which sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, business periodicals), individual items (e.g., journal articles, book chapters), and authors are most frequently cited in 38 widely-used organizational behavior, human resource management, strategic management, and general management undergraduate-level textbooks. By extracting all endnotes and references, we created a database including 7,445 sources, 33,719 articles and book chapters, and 32,981 authors cited at least once. Results showed a weak relationship between journals, articles, and authors cited most frequently in journals and those most frequently cited in textbooks. We also found that students are exposed to knowledge and content originating both in academic and non-academic outlets. Results have implications for theory and practice regarding the science-practice gap and a consideration of students as stakeholders, the conceptualization and measurement of scholarly impact and the design of academic performance management and reward systems, and choices regarding what knowledge academics create and disseminate.
