What is BLOCKCHAIN? The best explanation of blockchain technology

06:27
Blockchain explained in plain English Understanding how blockchain works and identifying myths about its powers are the first steps to developing blockchain technologies. Blockchain is an algorithm and distributed data structure for managing electronic cash without a central administrator among people who know nothing about one another. Originally designed for the crypto-currency Bitcoin, the blockchain architecture was driven by a radical rejection of at (government-guaranteed) money and bank-controlled payments. Blockchain is a special instance of Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), almost all of which have emerged in Bitcoin's wake. HOW DOES BLOCKCHAIN WORK? Blockchain is a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) that was invented to support the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Bitcoin was motivated by an extreme rejection of government-guaranteed money and bank-controlled payments. The developer of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto envisioned people spending money without friction, intermediaries, regulation or the need to know or trust other parties. Technically, the original blockchain is separable from Bitcoin, but this report will show that the blockchain design is so specific to Bitcoin that it's not a good fit for much else. The central problem in electronic cash is Double Spend. Because pure electronic money is just data, nothing stops a currency holder from trying to spend it twice. Blockchain solves the Double Spend problem without a digital reserve fund or similar form of umpire. Blockchain monitors and verifies Bitcoin transactions by calling upon a decentralized network of volunteer-run nodes to, in effect, vote on the order in which transactions occur. The network's algorithm ensures that each transaction is unique. Video created by the Centre of International Governance Innovation.

How Blockchain Works - in 2 Minutes

02:08
What is the Blockchain? This 2 minute video explains it in a very easy way. As usual, please leave you questions and ideas in the comments. with love your MinuteVideos Team Video Script: Scene 1 Blockchain is a Peer to Peer software technology that protects the integrity of a digital piece of information. It was invented to create the alternative currency Bitcoin but may be used for other cryptocurrencies, online signature services, voting systems and many other applications. In this video we explain how it works and what makes it special. Scene 2 Everyone uses paper money. When you get a 10 dollar bill you trust that it's not fake. If instead someone sent you an email saying "here's 10 dollars" you probably wouldn’t trust it. But when we "transfer money", use an ATM or pay with a deposit card that's pretty much exactly what we do. We're sending money in a digital message. Scene 3 To make sure no one's cheating or sending money they don't have, these “messages” go through a few trusted banks that keep a record of everything. They know how much money everyone has and deduct it properly for every transaction. Scene 4 But this becomes expensive when there’s a million transactions around the world every minute. The Economist estimates that banks charged us more than 1.7 trillion dollars to process these payments in 2014. That’s about 2% of the entire world economy! With blockchain we can save a lot of this cost because it lets us send money just like sending an email. Scene 5 Instead of sending a lot of payment information through a few servers, blockchain uses thousands of personal computers on the internet. All transactions are copied and cross checked between every computer in a system wide accounting book called the ledger, which becomes very safe at scale. Scene 6 Blockchain doesn’t just allow us to create safe money online, it lets us protect any piece of digital information. This could be online Identity cards, voter ballots, contracts and many other “legal instruments”, bringing bureaucracy into the 21st century.

Blockchain Technology || The Future ? ||

10:42
Blockchain Technology || The Future || Blockchain technology || The Future || 1. Many people know it as the technology behind Bitcoin, but blockchain’s potential uses extend far beyond digital currencies. So what exactly is blockchain, and why are Wall Street and Silicon Valley so excited about it? 2. What is blockchain? Currently, most people use a trusted middleman such as a bank to make a transaction. But blockchain allows consumers and suppliers to connect directly. 3. Continue… Using cryptography to keep exchanges secure, blockchain provides a decentralized database, or “digital ledger”, of transactions that everyone on the network can see. This network is essentially a chain of computers that must all approve an exchange before it can be verified and recorded. 4. In the case of Bitcoin, blockchain stores the details of every transaction of the digital currency, and the technology stops the same Bitcoin being spent more than once. How does it work in practice? 5. 6 How does it work in practice? 6. Why is it so revolutionary? Work for almost every type of transaction involving value, including money, goods and property. Its potential uses are almost limitless: from collecting taxes to send money back to family in countries where banking is difficult. Help to reduce fraud because every transaction would be recorded and distributed on a public ledger for anyone to see. 7. Where can it be used? • Banks, notary offices, Bitcoin ATM's, Voting, etc. • Places where there is need of the high security. • Irrevocable, transaction, contract, or any other digital data stored on it. 8. Why are banks interested? Banks can use it for money transfers, record keeping and other back- end functions. Replicates the paper- intensive international trade finance process as an electronic decentralized ledger, A single source of information. Track documentation and authenticate ownership of assets digitally. 9. Is it safe? USP : Execute a transaction without any intermediary. Financial institutions to execute and verify transactions discretely without any human intervention. The electronic ledger of transactions is continuously maintained and verified in 'blocks' of records. With the help of cryptography, the tamper-proof ledger is shared between parties on computer servers. Bring down the costs and reduce inefficiencies in the financial sector. 10. What Is a Blockchain Wallet? Wallet technology could be used for any system using a blockchain. A wallet is a piece of software or hardware that “holds” your cryptocurrency. Place that your public and private keys are stored. The wallet is the only record of your keys. So if you lose it, you’ll no longer have access to your cryptocurrency. 11. What is Blockchain Technology and how it's redefining organisations

35:45
Rapid change, exponential technologies and globalisation are increasingly putting traditional business models under pressure. We also find ourselves in a world where massive centralisation of power, wealth and data (e.g. Facebook, Amazon, Uber....) has created global monopolies and a fragile, insecure ecosystem. This presentation explores how we have got to this point and how concepts like Open Source, Agile, Teal, the Blockchain, Smart Contracts and Initial Coin Offerings now give us a way to fundamentally redefine how organisations are created and exist. How Blockchain Technology is Changing Business

01:20:15
Sam Penfield, Advisory Product Manager at SAS and Joe Green, Associate Chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, provide an introduction to Blockchain technology and its impact on business. Blockchain was first described in 1991 by Stuart Haber and Scott Stornetta as a methodology to timestamp documents, and only became popular with the introduction of cryptocurrency in 2008. Blockchain technology promises a major disruption to well-established intermediaries including banks, insurance companies, and digital adverting corporations (e.g. Google). In this presentation we will explore what block technology is and how it is expected to change businesses moving forward. Sam Penfield is on a mission to connect, integrate, develop, build, architect solutions that combine SAS technologies, user driven requirements, open-source technologies, and external system amalgamation. With 20+ years’ experience as a consultant and 30+ years developing software Penfield has a true passion for programming languages and problem solving. Recently, Penfield has worked in an emerging technologies group helping with integrating Spark with SAS, prototyping SAS product enhancements and over the last 2+ years has focused on Blockchain technologies and the integration of SAS from a regulatory, data management, and real-time analytics perspective including AI and deep learning. Joe Green, in addition to his university responsibilities, maintains consulting engagements around Big Data; Enterprise Architecture; IT Strategy; and emerging technologies. Green has spent over fourteen years in senior leadership positions within financial services for Bank of America, Capital One, and Wells Fargo. In addition to financial services, he has served in consulting for the last five years with the following organizations: McKinsey & Company, SunTrust Banks, and J.P. Morgan. Currently, Green is serving on a three-year commitment on a joint task force student-level data (enrollment, degree, and course). This project will result in validating the SAT/ACT scores as an early indicator to college success and machine learning around factors of student success and post-graduation outcomes. Research is underway to allow students access to their comprehensive education record, which will be hosted through Blockchain technologies.

The Mauritius Blockchain Center of Excellence will help position the country as a key and active player in the blockchain space. It will provide access to both policy, technical and business expertise around blockchain. WISeKey will be cooperating with local companies participating at the center on building points of view, proof of concepts, policies, educational materials including addressing all the distributed ledger capabilities across different blockchain schemes (public, consortium and private), with industry verticalization and domain specialization (IoT, transactions, messaging, etc.), underpinned by the best underlying technologies from startups, our key partners and from the community. Carlos Moreira, Founder and CEO WISeKey said: "We strongly believe that the Blockchain Center of Excellence will disrupt business flows and processes across different industries in Mauritius and will position the country as one of the Blockchain Platforms and Hubs." WISeKey will be localizing in Mauritius at the development of the WISeID Blockchain which is constantly growing as new blocks are added to it with a new set of recordings. Each WISeID node gets a copy of the WISeID Blockchain and gets downloaded automatically upon joining the WISeID network. Through the WISeID BlockChain app users are always in control of their digital identity stored on their mobile, IoT sensor and or computer and is only the user who determines which identification attributes are shared with social media, credit cards, merchant sites etc. never disclosing the Personal Identifiable Information (PII) if not required or necessary. WISeID uses BlockChain as a public, immutable ledger that allows third parties to validate that the original Identity or Attribute certifications provided by a Third Trusted Party has not been changed or misrepresented. Keeping control of Digital Identity is key to protecting user’s personal data. The Mauritius Event: The next Blockchain Valley Organized by Board of Investment (BOI) of Mauritius The Board of Investment (BOI) is the national investment promotion agency of the Government of Mauritius with the mandate to promote and facilitate investment in the country. It is the first point of contact for investors exploring business opportunities in Mauritius and the region. BOI also assists investors in the growth, nurturing and diversification of their business. Alex Tapscott: "Blockchain Revolution" | Talks at Google

56:39
Talks at Google in London were delighted to welcome Alex Tapscott to talk about his book Blockchain Revolution, looking at how the technology behind Bitcoin can reshape the world of business and transform the old order of human affairs for the better. Alex can be found on Twitter at: @alextapscott Book on Google Play - with free first chapter! https://play.google.com/store/books/details/Don_Tapscott_Blockchain_Revolution?id=bwz_CwAAQBAJ About the Book: The technology likely to have the greatest impact on the future of the world economy has arrived, and it's not self-driving cars, solar energy, or artificial intelligence. It’s called the blockchain. The first generation of the digital revolution brought us the Internet of information. The second generation powered by blockchain technology is bringing us the Internet of value: a new, distributed platform that can help us reshape the world of business and transform the old order of human affairs for the better. Blockchain is the ingeniously simple, revolutionary protocol that allows transactions to be simultaneously anonymous and secure by maintaining a tamperproof public ledger of value. Though it's the technology that drives bitcoin and other digital currencies, the underlying framework has the potential to go far beyond these and record virtually everything of value to humankind, from birth and death certificates to insurance claims and even votes. Why should you care? Maybe you're a music lover who wants artists to make a living off their art. And those examples are barely the tip of the iceberg. This technology is public, encrypted, and readily available for anyone to use. It's already seeing widespread adoption in a number of areas. For example, forty-two (and counting) of the world's biggest financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Credit Suisse, have formed a consortium to investigate the blockchain for speedier and more secure transactions. As with major paradigm shifts that preceded it, the blockchain will create winners and losers. And while opportunities abound, the risks of disruption and dislocation must not be ignored. About the Author: Alex Tapscott is the CEO and Founder of Northwest Passage Ventures, an advisory firm building industry-leading blockchain businesses. Formerly, Alex was a senior executive at Canaccord Genuity, Canada’s largest independent investment bank. At age 25, he became the firm’s youngest-ever Vice President and in 2014, he founded the firm’s blockchain practice. Over his career, Alex has worked tirelessly for his clients, raising hundreds of millions of dollars in growth capital from a global institutional investor base, and provided sound advice and counsel.

6th HLF – Hot Topic: Blockchain and distributed ledgers - Presentations "Technology"

01:24:00
Blockchain and distributed ledgers: Will the reality live up to the hype?  Will distributed ledger provide a ‘reset’ button for the internet and other networks? Many of the primary privacy risks prevalent today are due to an increasing centralization of information. A decentralized network is potentially more secure but not without its vulnerabilities. During this session, a panel of experts will illuminate how distributed ledgers work, discuss their potential and explore how the world of finance and other application areas could be reshaped.  Cryptocurrencies and their escalating, volatile values have successfully captivated the public. However, the rise to fame has not brought a thorough understanding of the underlying technology along with it and distributed ledgers remain largely misunderstood. A better comprehension of the technology is increasingly vital due to its potential ramifications in finance and regarding privacy.  Distributed ledgers could conceivably reshape finance through cryptocurrencies and smart contracts, cure data protection issues with social media and re-decentralize the internet. In short, a chance to hit the ‘reset’ button. Simultaneously, the very aspects that make distributed ledgers so promising are the same that make it vulnerable. Though replicability, immutability and being append-only are enormous strengths, they are equally large burdens when used maliciously.  The Hot Topic was coordinated and will be moderated by Eva Wolfangel, European Science Writer of the Year 2018, a science journalist with over 15 years of experience covering a range of scientific issues and technological developments and highlighting their significance for the public. In order to unravel the technology behind distributed ledgers and its potential implications, Wolfangel has enlisted the help of experts with backgrounds ranging from academia to industry. Through discussions and an open debate, the speakers aim to distinguish the implausible from the practical and distill how the distributed ledgers will further influence our lives.  Experts: Donald Kossmann is the director of the Microsoft Research Lab in Redmond. The Redmond Lab does research in all core areas of computer science. In his research, he works on data management in the cloud. His goal is to make data in the cloud cheaper, more valuable, and more secure.  Roman Matzutt and Martin Henze are working as researchers in the field of security and privacy of communication and distributed systems at RWTH Aachen University. Their recent research focuses on the technical foundations and optimizations of blockchains and distributed ledger technology as well as their implications for users.  C. Mohan has been an IBM researcher for 36 years in the database and related areas. The IBM Fellow and former IBM India Chief Scientist is currently focused on Blockchain, Big Data and HTAP technologies.
