Theresa May says the Conservative government will not permit a second referendum on Brexit. Speaking outside the informal summit in Salzburg, Mrs May explained how the British public would not be allowed to vote again on the country's relationship with European Union, despite growing calls for another referendum. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is a vocal critic of Brexit process and this weekend said the final deal should be referred to the public to vote on. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/itvnews Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/

Brexit - Theresa May: EU criticism of Chequers plan is 'negotiating tactic'

10:58
Theresa May was forced to insist her Chequers plan was not dead and accused European Union leaders of engaging in “negotiating tactics” after she was ambushed at the end of Salzburg summit when Donald Tusk declared that her proposals would not work. The prime minister acknowledged that she had had a “frank bilateral” with Tusk an hour before her end-of-summit press conference in which she was forced to defend Chequers and maintain that it was possible to reach a Brexit deal in the autumn. May had met Tusk after the other EU leaders had discussed Brexit in her absence over lunch, amid signs that they were attempting to harden their stance. But she tried to downplay their unexpectedly strong criticisms of her Chequers plan. “I have always said these negotiations were going to be tough,” May told reporters. “And at various stages of these negotiations, tactics would be used as part of those negotiations.” May had hoped that EU leaders would give her Chequers plan a warm reception – or at least not actively criticise it – 10 days before she has to face a restive Conservative party at its annual conference next month. But the response of Tusk left May on the defensive, and boosted her political critics at home. “Chequers goes pop,” declared Jacob Rees-Mogg, the chairman of the hard Brexit ERG group, on twitter and he later argued that the prime minister now needed to abandon her plan and instead pursue “a Canada plus free trade deal”. Tusk had forewarned her in their lunchtime meeting, giving her an hour to prepare for a press conference in which she appeared nervous and angry, where she was forced to repeat that her proposals could still form the basis of future relationship negotiations at the EU’s October summit and a likely emergency summit in November. Chequers plan is dead, says Tusk as Macron calls Brexiters liars Read more May repeatedly defended Chequers, which proposes that the UK share a common rulebook for goods and services after Brexit, because that would help ensure that trade could flow freely across the Irish border. “Our white paper remains the only serious and credible proposal on the table for achieving that objective,” she said. The prime minister also said she would presenter a counter-proposal to resolve the impasse over the Irish backstop, an EU proposal stipulating that if a free trade agreement cannot be signed after Brexit then Northern Ireland would remain in the customs union, creating a trade border down the Irish Sea. But she would not say when the proposals would be made public. The British PM tried to shift the burden for future concessions on to her EU counterparts, saying a deal could be reached “if political will is there on the other side”.

Theresa May faces PMQs as Brexit pressure mounts | ITV News

41:17
Theresa May has addressed the Commons at PMQs amid gorwing pressure on her premiership. On Tuesday evening, Tory Brexiteer MPs spent nearly an hour war-gaming how to oust Mrs May at a private meeting, while "leadership issues" were raised at a dinner for MPs with the Prime Minister's senior aides. However, the question of Mrs May's role was not brought up during the session, which saw Jeremy Corbyn deliver the biggest attack on the Prime Minister over the Government's Universal Credit welfare reform policy. Theresa May addresses David Davis and Boris Johnson resignations

05:56
Brexit Secretary David Davis dramatically resigned late last night, sparking a Brexiteer rebellion over Theresa May's plan to make a soft exit from the EU - leaving the Prime Minister fighting for her political life. Mr Davis quit the government last night telling the PM that her policies could leave the UK in a 'weak and inescapable' negotiating position, two days after ministers had finally agreed a plan for Britain's departure from the European Union. Steve Baker and Suella Braverman, junior ministers in the Brexit department, were also reported to have quit the government last night amid speculation that further Cabinet ministers would follow Mr Davis to the exit. The Brexit rebellion leaves Mrs May in a perilous position as she faces the House of Commons and then a potentially stormy meeting of Tory MPs on Monday. Mr Davis was praised last night by Tory MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg, who said he would oppose Mrs May's Brexit proposals. Boris Johnson attacks Theresa May over Brexit 'fog of self-doubt'

12:07
The former foreign secretary exploded back into the political fray as the Prime Minister struggles to contain open warfare in the Tory party. He complained that a 'fog of self doubt' had descended on the government after Mrs May's Lancaster House speech last year, and she had allowed the process to be dictated by questions about the Irish border. The Chequers plan Mrs May forced through Cabinet went from the 'bright' vision she originally set out to put the country in 'lock step' with the EU, he said. In a devastating assault, Mr Johnson accused the PM of misleading voters about her intentions and putting the UK 'in limbo'. And making a clear pitch for the top job, he added: 'It is not too late to save Brexit.' The searing assessment could throw Mrs May back into turmoil just as she was hoping to limp into the summer parliamentary break. Theresa May on the threat from Boris Johnson, Brexit and her dance moves | ITV News

05:17
It is "absolutely right" and "vital" that the United Kingdom prepares for a no deal Brexit, the Prime Minister has told ITV News. However, the Theresa May added that no deal would "not be the end of the world". Mrs May's comments come after Chancellor Philip Hammond claimed that Britain would be £80 billion worse off if no deal was reached with the European Union post-Brexit. While Mrs May refused to be drawn on whether Mr Hammond was too negative with his no deal warning, she instead said that his figures were based on calculations which were a "work in progress in January". It's my Brexit deal or no deal, says Theresa May!

The UK PM has laid it on the line, it's either her Chequers based deal or it's no deal. And now the pressure is really brought to bear by the Remain minded who recognise that Chequers is not a true Brexit by any stretch of the imagination and gives scope for them to later manoeuvre the UK back into the fold, or the yoke as is a more apt description. The Chancellor who is, to but it mildly, no fan of an independent sovereign UK, has once again opened his box of anti-Brexit rhetoric and claimed that leaving the EU without a deal will set the UK back ten years. He said we need a deal to lock in the progress we have made as a country since the Great Recession ten years ago. And responding to warnings about a no-deal Brexit from the International Monetary Fund he said: "As we leave the EU we must secure a close and enduring partnership with our European neighbours and we must heed the clear warnings of the IMF and others of the significant costs not reaching a deal with the EU will have for British jobs and British prosperity." And he went on to say: "Despite the contingency actions we are taking, leaving without a deal would put at risk the substantial progress the British people have made over the last 10 years." The IMF managing director, Christine Lagarde, had said earlier that if there was no deal: "...there would be dire consequences. It would inevitably have consequences in terms of reduced growth, an increase in the [budget] deficit and a depreciation of the currency. "In relatively short order it would mean a reduction in the size of the economy." But Number Ten refused to endorse the Chancellor's views and reiterated what the PM had told the BBC, saying: "The PM said very clearly that she believes our best days are ahead of us and that we will have plans in place for us to succeed in all scenarios." Responding to Mrs May's 'my deal or no deal' claim, the UKIP leader Gerard Batten said: "After a summer of dripping Project Fear 2.0 into the public's ears, Mrs May has put down an in or out option. "UKIP has always said that no deal, which is really reverting to WTO terms, is better than a bad deal with the EU. Mrs May's deal, whatever the particulars, will not be what the British people voted for on June 23rd, 2016, it will be Brexit in name only." And the former Foreign secretary, Boris Johnson has come down firmly against the PM's chequers proposals saying that it was a "constitutional abomination" as well as claiming that "for the first time since 1066, our leaders were deliberately acquiescing in foreign rule". And referring to the Irish border question Boris put it in context by saying: "We are straining at the gnat of the Irish border problem - in fact we haven't even tried to chew the gnat - and we are swallowing the camel of EU membership in all but name." He does have a way with words doesn't he? But has a deal nearly been reached anyway? According to a report in the Express: "A Brexit deal WILL be unveiled in November after Britain and the European Union reached an agreement following a year of intense differences and negotiations, according to reports today." It says that senior government officials and diplomats in Brussels as well as in London and other EU capitals are saying that the deal will be presented before Christmas. "Britain and the EU are now working closely to get the deal over the line, intent on avoiding any issues that critics could potentially pick apart and delay the process further. Said the Express. "Officials claim the withdrawal deal is close to completion, with the final push focusing on the “political declaration”, the document outlining the framework of the relationship that will accompany the withdrawal treaty." Yvette Cooper questions PM on 'baffling' Brexit tariff plan

04:06
Theresa May today repeated her warning that 'no deal is better than a bad deal' - as she admitted that some of her Brexit plan might not be ready in time. The Prime Minister tried to fend off claims that her controversial Brexit proposal is 'baffling' - but she struggled to explain how her customs plans would actually work. And she revealed her plans for the EU to collect tariffs for the UK and vice versa might not be ready before the UK fully leaves the bloc, after the transition period, in December 2020. Mrs May made the admission as she was grilled by senior MPs sitting on the Liaison Committee amid a Tory civil war over her Chequers plans - which are also known as the facilitated customs arrangement And as her proposal was being dissected by MPs on the committee, Boris Johnson issued a bold pitch for her job in a fiery resignation speech in the House of Commons Chamber.
