Margin call:

No hacer martingalas. Margin Buying Basics | by Wall Street Survivor

02:11
What is buying on margin? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com Opening a margin account allows you to trade on borrowed money. You have to open up a margin account when shorting stocks because you’re borrowing the stock rather than purchasing it. In order to maintain a margin account, you must have collateral to assure the broker that he’ll get his money back. Collateral is something (in this case money) that the borrower gives the lender as protection in case he fails to pay back what he owes. Initial margin: You must keep a minimum amount of your own money in the margin account when you sell the borrowed stock. The usual requirement is 150% of the value of the short sale. Maintenance margin: This is where the risk comes in. You must also maintain a minimum amount of money in the account depending on the current value of the stock you shorted As the price goes up, the maintenance margin requirement goes up, and you’ll need to add more and more money to your account. This is known as a margin call. What to Do if you get a Margin Call

01:38
What to Do if you get a Margin Call http://www.contracts-for-difference.com/Low-margins.html If you've enjoyed this video, please click the like button below and share it with your friends and remember to SUBSCRIBE! If you are a stock trader with a regular account, then good for you. This article does not apply to you, as all you are able to do is buy and sell stocks and shares with the money that you have. But if you are one of the increasing number of people who use a leveraged product for trading such as CFDs, then you should pay attention. You use a leveraged product because it means you can control and profit from a significantly greater number of shares or other financial securities than you could afford to buy with the money in your account. This allows you to profit much more, but it also lays you open to larger losses, should your trades go the wrong way. A margin call happens when the amount of money you have on deposit with your broker is deemed insufficient to cover potential losses on your open trades. As part of the extensive regulations on trading, the rules are laid down as to how much money you need in your account, and if you have less than this, your broker will issue you a margin call. The margin call is a demand for you to place more money in your account, so that the broker is protected against the consequences of your currently bad trade. The margin call does not protect you, in fact it demands more money than you were initially prepared to put into your account. And if you do not respond quickly to a margin call, then your broker is entitled by law to take any action he deems necessary to protect himself from potential losses. This can include closing down other unrelated trades that you may hold through him, whether or not they are winning. If you are planning and monitoring your trades properly, you really should not receive a margin call. It is a clear indication that you are getting in too deep, and over-leveraging your trades. You have to do something straight away, otherwise your broker can take action against you, and the sensible thing would be to close down the errant position before it gets you in more trouble. There is no point adding more money to your account, sending good money after bad, when you have already overstretched yourself. Once you have closed down the position, then you can take stock of this and other trades, and see where you have been over-enthusiastic in your trading. Note that simply closing the bad position may not completely recover your account, so you may still need to add some funds to continue with your other trades, but at least you will have stopped the bleeding. If you are ever in the position of receiving a margin call, take it as a stern lesson that you are taking more risks than you should, and make sure that you revise your trading strategy.

Margin Account vs. Cash Account

06:00
http://optionalpha.com - If you're feeling confused about the difference between cash and margin requirements for option trading in this video will help explain each to you. In general cash accounts (also your traditional IRA or retirement account) will require that for every contract you buy or sell you have the underlying cash available to cover that contract's risk. With margin accounts, the cash or securities that are already in your account act as collateral for a line of credit that you can take out from your broker in order to buy or sell more of an underlying option. This reduces your initial capital requirement for most trades which is a good thing but also leaves you vulnerable to overexposure in using too much leverage. It's not that leverage is a bad thing because it isn't. You just need to be aware of how it's calculated and how much risk you are willing to take for your portfolio size. We highly recommend that you call your broker and discuss their particular differences in how they calculate margin requirements for different option or stock positions. ================== Listen to our #1 rated investing podcast on iTunes: http://optionalpha.com/podcast ================== Download a free copy of the "The Ultimate Options Strategy Guide": http://optionalpha.com/ebook ================== Still working a day job? The high degree of leverage can work against you, as well as to your advantage. Before deciding to invest in foreign exchange or futures, you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore, you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with foreign exchange and futures trading, and consult with an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.

What is a margin call

01:21
What is a margin call. Today we will learn What is a margin call? A margin call happens when a trading account no longer has enough money to support the open trades. This happens when there are too many floating losses. Let's try to understand it a little bit better. When a trader gets the opportunity to leverage his funds, he uses a loan he receives from the brokerage, called a margin. By utilizing margin, traders are increasing their purchasing power so that they can own more lots without fully paying for it. In SmartTradeFX for example, a trader can leverage his funds up to 1:200, meaning that a trader who opened an account with the sum of $10,000 can open new positions up to the amount of $2,000,000! Using high leverage exposes you to high risks and so margin calls are like a safety feature embedded into your account that prevents you from losing more money than you have. Margin calls happen when a trader's equity reaches dangerous lows, in order to protect them from entering a negative balance. Follow smarttradefx on facebook and twitter for our latest announcements. What is Margin Trading? | Fidelity

05:39
Have you always wondered what it means to trade on margin? In this video, you’ll learn what margin trading is and if it is a strategy that could help you achieve your investment goals. To get started with margin trading, visit: https://www.fidelity.com/trading/advanced-trading-tools/margin-trading To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments _____________________________________________________________ What is margin trading? How does it work, and what are some of the benefits and risks? Over the next few minutes, we’ll take away some of the mystery of margin trading and help you decide whether it is a strategy that can help you achieve your investment goals. Margin trading is a form of borrowing that lets you leverage securities you already own to purchase additional securities, protect your account from overdraft or access a convenient line of credit. Margin trading is not designed for any specific type of customer – it may be right for any investor looking for additional leverage in their investment. Here’s an example of how it works: assume you want to buy 1,000 shares of QRS stock at $10 per share, but only have $5,000 in investable cash available. With a margin account, you can use your $5,000 in cash and borrow the other $5,000 on margin to make your purchase. Without margin – with what’s called a cash account – you would need the full $10,000 in cash to make this stock purchase. Now let’s see how a margin loan could impact your investment return. Assume the QRS stock rises in value from $10,000 to $11,000 and you sell it. You would pay back the $5,000 margin loan and realize a profit of $1,000. That’s a 20% return on your $5,000 investment. Without a margin loan, you would have invested $10,000 in cash and realized only a 10% return. While leverage is a powerful tool when the price of the security moves in your favor, it is also important to recognize the downside if the stock price falls. Let’s look at the flip side of the same example. Assume the market value of the QRS stock you purchased with margin for $10,000 falls to $9,000. Your equity – which is the value of your position minus the loan balance of $5,000 – would fall to $4,000. That’s a 20% loss from a 10% decrease in market value. Just like any loan, you will also incur interest charges that begin accruing on the date your trade settles, which is typically two days for a stock. The rate you pay depends on your outstanding margin balance – known as the margin debit balance. The rate is typically calculated using a tiered schedule, meaning the higher your debit balance, the lower the rate you are charged. You should also know that margin loans have no set repayment schedule, as long as you maintain the required level of equity in your account. Let’s shift focus to this equity requirement, along with some other important requirements for margin accounts. In order to buy securities on margin, you must also deposit enough cash or eligible securities to meet the initial margin requirement for your purchase. Typically, this is 50%, which is a requirement set by the Federal Reserve Board. Once you have started buying stock on margin, you are required to maintain a certain level of equity in your margin account. This requirement varies based on the type of security. For example, a stock generally has a maintenance requirement of 25% and is set by the New York Stock Exchange and FINRA. A brokerage firm may impose a higher requirement due to factors including, but not limited to, holding a significant portion of your account in a single security, which is known as a concentrated position. The security you are investing in must be eligible for margin in the first place, and not all securities are eligible. For example, while most stocks and fixed income securities, such as treasuries, are eligible, CDs and money markets are not. You can find out whether a security is eligible, as well as the specific margin requirements for each type of security, at https://www.fidelity.com/margin. Now we’ll put this information together and see how it all works. Margin trading entails greater risk, including but not limited to risk of loss and incurrence of margin interest debt, and is not suitable for all investors. Please assess your financial circumstances and risk tolerance prior to trading on margin. If the market value of the securities in your margin account declines, you may be required to deposit more money or securities in order to maintain your line of credit. If you are unable to do so, Fidelity may be required to sell all or a portion of our pledged assets. Margin credit is extended by National Financial Services, Member NYSE, SIPC. What is a Margin Account?

01:41
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Margin Account” Margin accounts are brokerage accounts that allow you a much wider range of transactions than cash accounts. In a cash account you must pay for every purchase in full at the time of the transaction. In a margin account, you can on margin, sell short, and purchase certain types of derivative products. Before you can open a margin account, however, you must satisfy the firm’s requirements for margin transactions. You must also agree in writing to the terms of the account, and make a minimum deposit of at least $2,000 in cash or qualifying securities. If you buy on margin or sell short, you pay interest on the cash or the value of the securities you borrow through your margin account and must eventually repay the loan. Because both types of transactions use leverage, they offer the possibility of making a substantially larger profit than you could realize by using only your own money. But because you must repay the loan plus interest even if you lose money on the investment, using a margin account also exposes you to more risk than a cash account. Many margin investors are familiar with the "routine" margin call, where the broker asks for additional funds when the equity in the customer’s account declines below certain required levels. Normally, the broker will allow from two to five days to meet the call. The broker’s calls are usually based upon the value of the account at market close since various securities regulations require an end-of-day valuation of customer accounts By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy - ITA
9 Tips for Trading on Margin 👊

10:18
9 Tips for Trading on Margin http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/Margin-financing.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE What is buying on margin? Trading on margin is basically utilising other people's monies - normally the broker's money to leverage up your position size. You get more bang for your buck; you still have to deposit a percentage of the overall position size but with leverage you can amplify gains (or losses). From a trading or investing perspective how do we use it: 1) Know the interest rate - this depends on LIBOR (or the central bank's interest rate) and the broker you are trading with. That will effect how long you want to hold the position. 2) Buy over time, not in one go. You need to be very careful in how you enter - spreading your entry over a period of time will dampen the effect of the margin. 3) Know the rules. Depending on where you are in the world you have different regulations. For instance in the UK you could have preset rules on how much margin you have to put out and when you are liquidated. 4) Avoid margin calls at all costs. 5) Use stops. When utilising margin you have to put in extra layers of safety risks. 6) Be cautious of news. 7) Keep some cash reserves. 8) Don't think of it as 'extra' money. Buying power needs to be used as a tool; it is not your money - it simply allows you to increase the volatility of your cash on deposit. 9) Stick to your plan.
