Canary used for testing for carbon monoxide 1926 US Bureau of Mines

00:52
In the early part of the 20th century, miners in Great Britain and the United States took caged canaries into coalmines in order to provide warning of the presence of toxic gases including carbon monoxide and methane. Canaries would visibly show distress and sway on their perches in the presence low concentrations of carbon monoxide before toppling over. The concept of the "canary in the coal mine" giving warning of a human health hazard is based on several principles. First, canaries were found to be more sensitive than both humans and other animals such as mice to the toxic effects of carbon monoxide. Second, the birds were allowed to share the same air exposures as the humans. Third, the occurrence of carbon monoxide poisoning in a bird was quite recognizable to the miners, since sick birds would tend to fall off of their perches and appear visibly ill. An article appearing in a 1914 issue of the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry provides a simple description of the concept (Burrell G, Seibert F. Experiments with small animals and carbon monoxide. Jl Indust Eng Chem. 1914;6:241--244.): Birds and mice may be used to detect carbon monoxide, because they are much more sensitive to the poisonous action of the gas than are men. Experiments by the Bureau of Mines show that canaries should be used in preference to mice, sparrows, or pigeons, because canaries are more sensitive to the gas. Rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs, or dogs, although useful for exploration work in mines, should be used only when birds or mice are unobtainable, and then, cautiously, because of their greater resistance to carbon monoxide poisoning. . . . Breathing apparatus must be used where birds show signs of distress, and, for this reason, birds are of great value in enabling rescue parties to use breathing apparatus to best advantage. For more on the use of animals as sensitive indicators of environmental hazards, providing an early warning system for public health, read the 2011Public Health Report - Animal Sentinels for Environmental and Public Health (http://www.publichealthreports.org/issueopen.cfm?articleID=2645 ) by John S. Reif, DVM, MSc, at Colorado State University, Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. This is clipped from the 1926 film by the US Bureau of Mines titles, Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. The film shows the kinds of breathing apparatus used in mine rescues and explains their various parts. A mine rescue team explores a mine, testing for low oxygen content and carbon monoxide. The entire film is posted to my channel. This US Bureau of Mines film and many others are available at the US National Archive in College Park, Maryland.

Canaries in Mines

00:33
Carbon monoxide, a potentially deadly gas devoid of color, taste or smell, can form underground during a mine fire or after a mine explosion. Today's coal miners must rely on carbon monoxide detectors and monitors to recognize its presence underground. However, before the availability of modern detection devices, miners turned to Mother Nature for assistance. Canaries -- and sometimes mice -- were used to alert miners to the presence of the poisonous gas. Following a mine fire or explosion, mine rescuers would descend into the mine carrying a canary in a small wooden or metal cage. Any sign of distress from the canary was a clear signal that the conditions underground were unsafe, prompting a hasty return to the surface. Miners who survive the initial effects of a mine fire or explosion may experience carbon monoxide asphyxia. According to tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines, canaries were preferred over mice to alert coal miners to the presence of carbon monoxide underground, because canaries more visibly demonstrated signs of distress in the presence of small quantities of the noxious gas. For instance, when consumed by the effects of carbon monoxide, a canary would sway noticeably on his perch before falling, a much better indicator of danger than the limited struggle and squatting, extended posture a mouse might assume. For more information on the use of canaries in mines, go to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) website at http://www.msha.gov/century/canary/canary.asp . During the making of this film, the furor set off by the filmmaker's discoveries about certain practices in the Ag Chem Department of Occidental Chemical Company, at a plant in California, resulted in a nationwide ban on the production of the pesticide DBCP. The filmmakers discovered that every one of the plant's employees involved in the production of that chemical had become sterile. Other abuses are also brought to light. The second half of the film reveals the sorry conditions that workers must endure in textile plants in the American South. This is clipped from the 1979 classic occupational health film, Song of the Canary, by Josh Hanig and David Davis. Song of the Canary is available New Day Films at http://www.newday.com/films_title.html?letter=S .

canary in a coal mine Something or someone who, due to sensitivity to his, her, or its surroundings, acts as an indicator and early warning of possible adverse conditions or danger. Refers to the former practice of taking caged canaries into coal mines. The birds would die if methane gas became present and thereby alert miners to the danger. Wildlife in disaster movies assumes the role of the canary in a coal mine, fleeing the scene when catastrophe is imminent. Canary Birds in coal mines...

03:31
The domestic canary, often simply known as the canary, is a domesticated form of the wild canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands. Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century. They were brought over by Spanish sailors to Europe. From the eighteenth up to twentieth centuries, canaries and finches were used in the UK, Canada and USA in the coal mining industry, to detect carbon monoxide. In the UK, this practice ceased in 1986. Typically, the domestic canary is kept as a popular cage and avairy bird. Given proper housing and care, a canary's lifespan ranges from 10 to 15 years.

We asked Shane to share some insights regarding the track names: Canary In The Coal Mine is a tension building piece and has a panic feel to it. Back in the day they used to use Canaries down in the mines to see of the air was toxic or to find if there were evil spirits down there – I think the name suits the track very well. Kimnara is the deity of music and therefore Ode To is a tribute to the god of music. Tracklist: 01.Canary In The Coal Mine 02.Ode To Kimnara Enjoy! Canary in the Coalmine has been garnering local and regional attention within the Jacksonville area and beyond, performing at Suwanee Springfest and Magnolia Festival and recently completing a mini tour to support their album release. Canary has performed for and worked in collaboration with many noteworthy Jacksonville establishments, including the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, MOCA, Springfield Porchfest, and Riverside Avondale Preservation, and has plans of continuing to grow and spread their music throughout the Southeast. Canary in the Coalmine is an Americana Folk band based out of Jacksonville, Florida. A haunting quality underscores striking vocal harmonies that provide a focal point for the band’s signature sound. The band released their first full-length album “Who Fears the Devil?” in March of 2015. Because of the vast collection of musical influences the writers share, Canary’s sound is a melding together of different genres of American roots music, including Country, Bluegrass, Old Spirituals, and Appalachian Folk, tinged with the flavors of blues, soul, and a little bit of rock and roll. Canary in the coal mine

08:02
In the early days of coal mining, miners died as a result of coming accross pockets of invisible toxic gas. So, they started to take a canary in a cage with them as they entered the mine. If there were any dangerous gasses, the canary would breath them in first, and with their comparatively small lungs would suffocate and die, warning the miners of the poisonous gasses around them. They became an early warning system which was only replaced when technology took over the role. In many ways, our autistic children are the canaries in the coalmine of the education system. They are more sensitive and vulnerable to the environment affecting all children right now, and are paying a very heavy price. The problem is a complicated, but one thing we can do is to improve the self-esteem of our children, using this 4-part plan. - Stop trying to fix me - Listen to what I want - Celebrate successes - Give me space If you came to this film anywhere other than as a member of the Different Joy Club, please sign up at www.differentjoy.com/adj-club/ Sarah-Jane Critchley is the author of 'A Different Joy, The Parents' Guide to Living Better with Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and More...' and the Different Joy Planner' which can be downloaded instantly here https://differentjoy.kartra.com/page/Qqs5 Website: www.differentjoy.com Email: [email protected] Facebook: www.facebook.com/differentjoy/ Twitter: @SarahJaneCritch Pinterest: https://za.pinterest.com/sarahjanecri...
