May 19 (Bloomberg) --- There's a small lab inside Starbucks headquarters called the "cupping room" where 75 percent of all Starbucks coffee will be tested before hitting stores. The Increasing Importance of the Oil Trading Companies

Daniel Jaeggi, President & Co-Founder, Mercuria Ian Taylor, President & Chief Executive Officer, Vitol Group of Companies Torbjörn Törnqvist, Chief Executive Officer, Gunvor Moderator: Marcel van Poecke - Chairman, AtlasInvest In the oil price downturn of the last two years, the major oil trading houses have shown a remarkable ability to adapt and do quite well in an environment that has been extremely challenging for others in the oil business. In addition, with the retreat of most banks from physical commodity trading following the financial crisis, the importance and influence of these trading houses has increased significantly, along with their trading volumes. In this session of the Oil & Money 2016 conference, the heads of three of the largest oil trading companies explain their approach and elucidate how oil trading is changing and where oil markets are headed. Questions that will be addressed include: • What is the explanation for the recent remarkable success of oil trading? • How does the future competitive environment look? • What is the outlook for oil prices and market rebalancing? • Is Opec or Saudi Arabia likely to return to the role of managing oil markets? • How is financial regulation impacting the oil trading world? • What are the biggest risks and wildcards facing your companies?

Fair Trade: Does It Help Poor Workers?

03:41
Elizabeth, an Everyday Economics viewer, asks: “How does the purchase of fair-trade goods affect wages in developing countries?” Great question! The “fair trade” movement has become popular as a proposed way to increase living standards in developing countries. In this video, we look at whether fair trade does just that. For a good to be considered “fair trade” it must meet various requirements developed by a handful of fair trade organizations. In the developing world, who is better positioned to meet these fair trade requirements — large producers in wealthier countries or small producers in poorer countries? To answer this question, we take a look at the the example of fair trade coffee produced in both Costa Rica and Ethiopia. How does fair trade affect wages and overall quality of life in those countries? And, if fair trade isn’t the best way to improve living standards in developing countries, how else can we maximize employment options and well-being for poor workers? This question is at the core of an entire branch of economics — Development Economics. To learn more, check out MRU’s Development Economics course. Select Your Business Name and Set up a Website and Blog Without a website or blog, you can't have a networked import/export business. Get yourself a platform that allows you to develop a presence online and grow your business beyond your wildest imagination. No. 2. The Dark Side Of Chocolate 2010 Full Documentry

46:32
The Dark Side of Chocolate is a 2010 documentary film about the exploitation and slavetrading of African children to harvest chocolate still occurring nearly ten years after the cocoa industry pledged to end it. Cocoa plantations in Ghana and the Ivory Coast provide 80% of the world with chocolate, according to CorpWatch. Chocolate producers around the world have been pressured to "verify that their chocolate is not the product of child labor or slavery. In 2000, BBC aired Slavery: A Global Investigation which brought the issue of child labor in the cooca industry to light. In 2001, the Chocolate Manufacturers Association and its members signed a document that prohibited child trafficking and labor in the cocoa industry after 2008. Despite this effort, numerous children are still forced to work on cocoa plantations in Africa. In 2009, Mars and Cadbury joined the Rainforest Alliance to fight against child labor. By 2020, these major chocolate manufacturers hope to completely eradicate child labor on any plantations from which they purchase their cocoa. Production The Dark Side of Chocolate was produced by Danish journalist Miki Mistrati who investigated the use of child labor and trafficked children in chocolate production. It is filmed by U. Roberto Romano. The filming started in Germany, where Mistrati asked vendors where their chocolate comes from. They then flew to Mali, where many of the children are from. Next, they explored the Ivory Coast where the cocoa plantations are located. The film ends in Switzerland where both the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Nestle headquarters are located. Much of the footage in this documentary is recorded using a secret camera located in a bag Mistrati carries with him. The documentary was released in 2010, first in Denmark, and later in Sweden, Ireland, Belgium, and Norway Synopsis In 2001, the Chocolate Manufacturers Association formed an action plan entitled the Harkin-Engel Protocol that would aim to end the worse forms of child trafficking and slave labor.[9] However, child trafficking still continued in countries in West Africa. Authorities and companies denied it happened. Due to this conflicting outlook, the filmmakers went undercover to discover the truth. The film starts with its two filmmakers investigating independently by journeying to the western coast of Africa to the country of Mali, the country where children were rumored to be smuggled from and then transported to the Ivory Coast.[10] The team of journalists aimed to investigate human trafficking and child labor in the Ivory Coast and its effects on the worldwide chocolate industry. The documentary starts in Cologne, Germany where Mistrati asks each vendor at a gathering of chocolate makers where their chocolate is imported from. Their responses lead to the conclusion that almost all chocolate is imported from somewhere in Africa. Their detective work lead them to find that people in Mali were trafficking children at bus stations by bribing them with work and money, or by kidnapping them from villages. Afterward, they are taken to towns near the border such as Zegoua, where another trafficker transports the children over the border on a dirt-bike. Then they are left with a third trafficker who sells the children to plantations. The children, ranging in age from 10 to 15, are forced to do hard labor, physically abused, and paid poor wages, or none at all. Most of them stay with the plantation until they die, never seeing their families again. Child labor and trafficking is illegal according to the Harkin-Engel Protocol, an agreement that was signed by all major chocolate companies promising not to harvest their cocoa beans through means of child workers. When confronted with this issue, the corporate representatives of some of these companies denied all rumors of child labor and trafficking, but the investigations of the filmmakers proved brought to light the continued abuse of children on cocoa plantations.

The Mubende coffee plantation and the bitter taste of eviction | DW Documentary

42:32
Coffee production comes at a cost in Africa. 4,000 Ugandans living in Mubende were forced off their land to make way for a new coffee plantation in 2001. The Hamburg-based Neumann group, a world leading raw coffee trader, were behind the new plantation which left thousands of Africans homeless. The military razed houses and huts to the ground in four villages, destroying fields and food supplies. The forced evacuation even cost the lives of a number of locals. While one of many cases of land-grabbing in Africa, Mubende was among the first to be properly documented. Many of those evicted lost everything they had. With the help of human rights groups they took the Ugandan government and the Neumann concern to court. The trial was dragged out over several years, however, until a ruling was finally reached in March 2013 - in favor of the plaintiffs. In the spring of 2015 the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural and Social Rights looked into the Mubende case, and called on the Ugandan government to restore the rights of the expelled small scale farmers. In July that year, however, the original judgment was provisionally overturned by the domestic appeals court. The case is now still pending. The victims fear they still have a long struggle ahead of them. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. HONG KONG: USA COMPANIES START EXCHANGE TRADING

01:51
English/Nat XFA Seven big United States companies have started trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Six of them are hi-tech including Microsoft and Intel, but the coffee chain Starbucks is also trading. The move is unlikely to affect Hong Kong's economy much but it's being considered as another step towards internationalising share trading around the world. Seven Nasdaq-listed companies began trading on Hong Kong's stock exchange on Wednesday. It means that for the first time the stocks will be traded in Asia during the region's office hours. Six of the seven companies are hi-tech including Microsoft, Intel and Dell Computer - but the coffee chain Starbucks is also trading. Company representatives drank champagne in the middle of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange floor together with Nasdaq President John Wall. According to exchange officials stocks will be traded in Hong Kong dollars, and investors will be able to buy and sell through any of the territory's brokerages. Nasdaq has been making a big international push in getting the seven companies onto the trading floor. It's teamed up with Japan's Softbank Corp. to create a new, computerized exchange selling shares in startup Japanese companies. As trading in the seven stocks began for the first time Nasdaq's president addressed the exchange. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There has no been market before Hong Kong and NASDAQ that has linked the liquidity and the trading apparatus so that investors in both countries can participate in these investments of these stocks." SUPER CAPTION: John Wall, President, Nasdaq International So far on the first morning trading in the seven stocks was thin. And faced with apparently little interest locally in the new counters, Nasdaq's President acknowledged it might be a while before the idea takes off. SOUNDBITE: (English) "They say a market is not made in one day, nor were we expecting it to be made in one day. We have positioned this as a pilot - we hope you understand what we mean when we say it is a pilot, and quite frankly I think it will grow slowly. There is not a great deal of product in the clearing corporation over here. That will take time, we understood that when we started, but obviously you have to start someplace." SUPER CAPTION: John Wall, President, Nasdaq International In a bid to encourage trading stamp duties and a minimum brokerage commission requirement will be waived for the seven companies. Counting the Cost - The giants of commodity trading

25:21
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe From Switzerland to the world - they are the giants of commodity trading, but can they shake off the tag of 'modern day slave masters'? This week on Counting the Cost we examine the commodities industry - the very essentials, the raw materials and resources that we simply cannot live without. These are traded all over the globe - everything from oil to copper, sugar to precious minerals. A country normally associated with great lakes, political neutrality and the Red Cross can now be associated with the global commodities industry as Switzerland is home to some of the biggest commodities companies in the world. But why has that one region out surpassed the others in the commodities business? And is it possible to regulate the globalised, multi-billion dollar companies which operate within it? At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Gold and Oil are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to commodities. In this video David Jones explains what the three main groups are and what factors influence them the most. Energy, precious metals and agricultural products are what make the world function. They are its lifeblood and vital organs. Because of this importance they are actually traded often with futures, so that there is a guarantee that they will be there when needed. From politics and weather to disease and speculation, commodities are among the most volatile instruments in the financial world. Their specifics are governed by a wide range of variables and understanding what drives their prices up and down is one of the hardest challenges that traders face. Among the other more popular commodities we have silver, natural gas, wheat, orange juice, cattle. The list is actually quite long and the factors that change their price too. Whether it’s interest rates in the U.S., oil production in Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, or a insect invasion in Southeast Asia, it’s definitely an exciting world to trade in. At Trading 212 we provide an execution only service. This video should not be construed as investment advice. Investments can fall and rise. Capital at risk. CFDs are higher risk because of leverage.

The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World - Prices, Fair Trade (1999)

57:33
The history of coffee goes at least as far back as the 10th century, with a number of reports and legends surrounding its first use. The native (undomesticated) origin of coffee is thought to have been in Ethiopia. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/046501836X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=046501836X&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=7123ec87029df4f973111e1f758da631 The earliest substantiated evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree appears to have been in the middle of the 15th century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen. By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East, Persia, Turkey, Horn of Africa, and northern Africa. Coffee then spread to the Balkans, Italy and to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia and then to America. Gabriel de Clieu brought coffee seedlings to Martinique in the Caribbean circa 1720. Those sprouts flourished and 50 years later there were 18,680 coffee trees in Martinique enabling the spread of coffee cultivation to Haiti, Mexico and other islands of the Caribbean. The territory of Santo Domingo (now Hispaniola, comprising Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw coffee cultivated from 1734, and by 1788 it supplied half the world's coffee. Coffee had a major influence on the geography of Latin America.[29] The French colonial plantations relied heavily on African slave laborers. However, the dreadful conditions that the slaves worked in on coffee plantations were a factor in the soon-to-follow Haitian Revolution. The coffee industry never fully recovered there.[30] Coffee also found its way to the Isle of Bourbon, now known as Réunion, in the Indian Ocean. The plant produced smaller beans and was deemed a different variety of arabica known as var. Bourbon. The Santos coffee of Brazil and the Oaxaca coffee of Mexico are the progeny of that Bourbon tree. Circa 1727, the King of Portugal sent Francisco de Mello Palheta to French Guinea to obtain coffee seeds to become a part of the coffee market. Francisco initially had difficulty obtaining these seeds, but he captivated the French Governor's wife and she sent him enough seeds and shoots to commence the coffee industry of Brazil. In 1893, the coffee from Brazil was introduced into Kenya and Tanzania (Tanganyika), not far from its place of origin in Ethiopia, 600 years prior, ending its transcontinental journey.[31] Meanwhile, coffee had been introduced to Brazil in 1727, although its cultivation did not gather momentum until independence in 1822.[32] After this time, massive tracts of rainforest were cleared first from the vicinity of Rio and later São Paulo for coffee plantations.[33] After the Boston Tea Party of 1773, large numbers of Americans switched to drinking coffee during the American Revolution because drinking tea had become unpatriotic.[34] Cultivation was taken up by many countries in the latter half of the 19th century, and almost all involved the large-scale displacement and exploitation of the indigenous Indian people. Harsh conditions led to many uprisings, coups and bloody suppression of peasants.[35] The notable exception was Costa Rica, where lack of ready labor prevented the formation of large farms. Smaller farms and more egalitarian conditions ameliorated unrest over the 19th and 20th centuries.[36] In the 1930s Brazil took off as the major producer of coffee, leaving behind their early yerba mate industry, which Argentina then took over. The first step in Europeans' wresting the means of production was effected by Nicolaes Witsen, the enterprising burgomaster of Amsterdam and member of the governing board of the Dutch East India Company who urged Joan van Hoorn, the Dutch governor at Batavia that some coffee plants be obtained at the export port of Mocha in Yemen, the source of Europe's supply, and established in the Dutch East Indies;[50] the project of raising many plants from the seeds of the first shipment met with such success that the Dutch East India Company was able to supply Europe's demand with "Java coffee" by 1719.[51] Encouraged by their success, they soon had coffee plantations in Ceylon, Sumatra and other Sunda islands.[52] Coffee trees were soon grown under glass at the Hortus Botanicus of Leiden, whence slips were generously extended to other botanical gardens. Dutch representatives at the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Utrecht presented their French counterparts with a coffee plant, which was grown on at the Jardin du Roi, predecessor of the Jardin des Plantes, in Paris. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_coffee

How AI Could Revolutionize Coffee | Freethink Coded

06:55
Around 1 in 60 people on the globe rely on the coffee supply chain for their livelihood. But it’s an antiquated system, rife with uncertainty, unfairness, and even corruption. THE NEXT FRONTIER: Coffee farmers protest against trade middlemen

07:34
Six giant European companies control the multi-billion shilling coffee business in Kenya, raising concerns about possible price manipulation. With coffee prices at the auction only a fraction of the market prices - which hurts farmers - the Government has recommended the formation of a coffee pricing committee. However, the proposal is being fought by what the Government has termed forces that have long benefited from the over-regulated market. Through various subsidiaries, the six companies have seized control of the value chain of the prized bean from the farm to the consumer’s table. The firms collectively bought around 70 per cent of the beans, worth Sh16 billion, sold through the Nairobi Coffee Exchange for the financial year ended September 30. Analysis of past trading data confirms the dominance was worse in earlier years, dating back to colonial times. Can multinationals be ethical?

03:02
Many people think of environmental issues and human rights – child labour, poor working conditions, low wages – when they consider the question of multinationals and ethics. But today there is another aspect of multinationals that is worrying people, or governments at least, and that is tax avoidance. Paying taxes, whether we like it or not, is an obligation for individuals and companies alike, so what exactly are multinationals doing and is it ethical? A large international company is in a position to be able to decide where to locate its subsidiaries and how best to arrange its affairs to minimise its tax bill. This happened a lot around the 1990s when there was an incredible spread of global businesses across the planet. Starbucks, for example, sources its UK coffee from its wholesale trading subsidiary in Switzerland. This makes commercial sense as it is cheaper to have one team who sources all of Starbucks’ coffee, and Switzerland is apparently the centre of the world coffee-trading business. But it is hard to escape the conclusion that Switzerland would not be a major centre for coffee trading if it did not charge such a low 12% tax on the trading profits. It is not just the companies that are under competitive pressure to reduce their taxes. The tax jurisdictions also compete with each other to attract more business. Ireland, for example, cut its corporate tax rate to 12.5% specifically for this reason and Google was one business to take advantage of this, locating its two data centres there. If a company cannot move its business outside a high-tax jurisdiction, it still has ways of moving its taxable profits outside the country through a method known as transfer pricing. This involves payments to other companies within the same corporate empire, but which are located in low-tax jurisdictions. Multinationals can overprice the goods and services provided and therefore decrease the taxable profit in one country and move it somewhere else. Amazon, Google, Starbucks, Facebook and eBay have all recently been accused of this. In principle, these kinds of intra-company transactions are perfectly legitimate if they are done at a fair market price. In practice, the transactions are often ones that would never take place on an open market, making it impossible for a tax authority to say with certainty what the fair market price would be.

History of Tea Importing - Henry P Thomson

02:44
Henry P Thomson has been importing tea for over 100 years! Henry P. Thomson, Incorporated. was established as a direct importer of tea in 1912 by Henry P. Thomson. Born in Toronto, Canada in 1886, Mr. Thomson started his career in the tea business with the Anglo American Direct Tea Trading Company, representing the interests of James Finlay & Company. In 1912, Mr. Thomson was transferred to New York where he subsequently re-named the business. "HP" as he was known in the trade, was an innovator recognizing early on that tea was a complimentary, not competitive, beverage with coffee and that the potential for iced tea sales were immense. In 1948, Henry's son, Don, joined the firm. A Princeton University graduate and a U.S. Army veteran, Don honed his skills at the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. After his apprenticeship and growth under previous managers, Don Thomson assumed the position of company President in the mid 1950's. Don established new contacts in up-and-coming tea producing countries while maintaining associates in traditional origins. It was around this time that Jack Painter also added his coffee trading and tasting background to the HPT team. Don and Jack steered the course of HPT through the 1960's and 70's. They established exclusive agents in Argentina and Indonesia, while continuing to import from many other countries. At the time, the logistics of the industry were changing. With the advent of ocean containers, the traditional method of purchasing small lots of tea packed in wooden chests was being replaced by the more efficient method of procuring 40,000 pound uniform bulked lots of tea. In 1984, Don Thomson's son-in-law, Eugene Amici joined the firm. After graduating as a Chemist from Lafayette College in 1978, Eugene enjoyed a successful career in the medical diagnostic industry. In 1992, Eugene met and employed John L. Smith, a Languages and Political Science graduate of Georgetown University. John started his career out of college with a trading firm that imported raw materials from South America to the nutraceutical industry. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese with a keen interest and vast experience in international business, John was a perfect fit for HPT, Incorporated. In 1995, Don elected to become Chairman of HPT. He appointed Eugene as President and John as Vice President. With their combined knowledge base, and the help of a small, devoted staff, HPT continues to be one of the most respected family-owned firms in the industry
