How Chinese characters can change English language education: Jonathan Stalling at TEDxOU

18:21
Jonathan Stalling is an Associate Professor of English at OU specializing in Modern-Contemporary American and East-West Poetics, Comparative Literature, and Translation Studies and is the co-founder and editor of Chinese Literature Today. Over the last 15 years, Stalling has explored the poetics of transliteration and interlanguages (his thesis at the University of Edinburgh in 2000 was entitled "Prefacing the Text: Toward a Transliterational Telos") and this work led to the publication of Yingelishi and more recently Phonotaxis, but over the last several years this preoccupation has led to larger projects on accents in language as epistemic space and on radical new paradigms of ESL pedagogy. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Translating Poetry in the Age of Prose

01:25:25
Professor of English and Comparative Literature Randa Aboubakr delivered the first lecture of the Fall 2012 In Translation Series. In her lecture, "Translating Poetry in the Age of Prose," she focused on the translatability and the importance of translating poetry. She explored different strategies of translation -- homophonic, mimetic, and analogical -- and translating "poetry in prose." The complexity of translating poetry, she observed, is reflected in the need to create a balance between the hidden meanings of a poem and the structural form of poetry as a genre. Aboubakr discussed the challenges of translating poetry in a field increasingly dominated by prose, the role of translators as "couriers of culture," and the politics of translation. She concluded that more attention should be given to translating poetry in the age of blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, which she called today's "little epics."

A Comparative Analysis of Ayahuasca Healing in Amazonia and Australia - Alex Gearin

http://psychedelicscience.org Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org:‪ ‬http://www.amara.org/en/videos/hAaNS79GQbbB/info/ A Comparative Analysis of Ayahuasca Healing in Amazonia and Australia Alex Gearin, PhD (C) Over the last few decades the Amazonian psychoactive brew ayahuasca has undergone a rapid and quickening process of globalization. While there have not been many studies dedicated to comprehending indigenous Amazonian uses of ayahuasca, anthropologists tend to understand indigenous ayahuasca practices as being embedded in broader Amazonian ontological perspectives or ways of relating to the world. With a focus on notions of health, this talk undertakes a comparative analysis of basic principles of indigenous Amazonian ayahuasca practice in contrast to various cosmological postulates of ayahuasca use in Australian society. The analysis draws on personal fieldwork undertaken in Australian ayahuasca circles during 2011 and 2012 along with seminal ethnographies on the use of ayahuasca in indigenous Amazonia. Questions that will be explored include the instability of identity and personhood, notions of illness and wellbeing, and the encounter between humans and spirits or discarnate entities. Alex Gearin is currently a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. His dissertation research involves a multi-sited ethnographic study of ayahuasca culture in Australia with a focus on health and cosmology. His B.A. thesis, written at La Trobe University, explores discourse on Amerindian ontology and the Upper Amazonian social contexts of discarnate entities encountered through the use of ayahuasca. Additional research interests include the anthropology of sorcery and witchcraft, post-colonialism, drug policy, and globalization. Such is a political approach, Political scholars analyze politics from different angles, different principles, methods and results appear, such a political approach is formed. It is necessary to know all the Approves, then only we can make a picture A political approach means that analyzing politics from a perticular approach or angle, like Marx analyzes politics based only on economic elements, or like Plato from philosophical approaches, such as we will see today that in Traditional Polyxes the Traditional What is the approach Yankee was the first to see Political Thinker from which angle and used to study politics So let's start again Aristotle is known as the Father of Comparative Politics. He first studied Comparative Study of 158 Constitution of Greece From the Aristotle to ww 2, the approach which scholars studied with is called a traditional approach and the approaches adopted in the later complective palics of ww 2 are defined as a modern approach. Now let's see why this new approach was born The birth of this new approach was due to the fact that the Junkies who were working in whatever areas or areas where they were working were not working in any way to improve political life or political problems, at the same time, scholars had called Virarism To form the basis of their study and approach, to address the new approach methods and the political problems faced by the objective, in this way modern approaches Before it is The difference between an approach and ideology is that when we study in order to get the ideology of that ideology If you adopt certain methods or patterns, then it becomes an approach Specialty Non-comparative approach The comparison of the comparative point of view is that earlier scholars did not have to think that if they had done so, they would not make Westerners, Democrats or Europe barriers or criteria in their copies, they lacked comparative nature. Descriptive Descriptive It used to describe only the rule of law, the Yanki Sarkar, and not the analysis. What is Linguistics? | Definition and Branches of Linguistics

03:09
What is Linguistics? | Definition and Branches of Linguistics: Linguistics is the scientific study of language, specifically language form, language meaning, and language in context. Linguistics is that particular science which studies the origin, organization, nature and development of language descriptively, historically, comparatively, explicitly and formulates the general rules related to language. Now, let’s discuss some of the branches of linguistics. General linguistics is a study of the phenomena, historical changes, and functions of language without restriction to a particular language or to a particular aspect of language such as phonetics, grammar and stylistics. Descriptive linguistics is the work of objectively analyzing and describing how language is actually used (or how it was used in the past) by a group of people in a speech community. It deals with a particular language in a specific time and in a specific community. Diachronic linguistics is also called historical linguistics. It is the scientific study of language change over time. It studies language change, history of words, history of speech communities and develops general theories about how and why language changes. Comparative linguistics is a branch of historical linguistics that is concerned with comparing languages to establish their historical relatedness. It compares two languages and establishes relationships between them. This comparison is generally done between the languages which are related to each other. Theoretical linguistics studies language to construct theories of their structure and functions. It is not concerned with practical applications. Applied linguistics studies language to apply the concepts and findings of linguistics to practical tasks including English language teaching. It covers both general and descriptive linguistics. Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that comprises the study of the sounds of human speech. It is concerned with the physical properties of speech sounds or sign, their physiological production, acoustic properties, auditory perception, and NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL STATUS. Phonology, on the other hand, is concerned with the abstract and grammatical characterization of systems of sounds or signs. It has traditionally focused largely on the study of the systems of phonemes in particular languages (and therefore used to be also called PHONEMICS or PHONEMATICS. MORPHOLOGY is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. It analyzes the structure of words and parts of words, such as stems, root words, prefixes, and suffixes. ........................................................................... Connectively written and presented with a fascinating dynamic leading to a conclusive twist; Nostradamus' prophetic warnings boldly state what the coming wonders and evil deceptions are. Surprisingly much of what he says and prophesies has been said by others since his death and mostly by well known figures in our very recent history. In the first part of this Address shocking statements are made as to be possibly imprisonable offences under current legislation and are so unbelievable in their statement as to appear incredulous. However, in the second part of this Address their true origins and provenance are astonishingly revealed as true. Clearly and concisely presented with great insight, this Address is immediate and most relevant to us all now.

Study of Comparative Public Administration | Hindi & Urdu

11:41
Basic Concept of Comparative Public Administration | Hindi & Urdu COMPARATIVE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION - DEFINITION: Comparative public administration is defined as the study of administrative systems in a comparative fashion or the study of public administration in other countries.Another definition for "comparative public administration" is the "quest for patterns and regularities in administrative action and behavior". It looks to test the effectiveness of the Classical Theorists' (Fayol,Taylor,Urwick, etc) Principles of Administration effectiveness on a universal level(different political and administrative setups in developing and developed countries and their ecology) as well as develop a comparative theory of Public Administration. It is a very significant area of study in Public Administration as it helps in understanding Administrative setups and their functioning in various settings and societies/countries and what works and why it works. Also,it helps improvise administrative systems making them more efficient together with helping in adding and improvising the already existing literature/theories of Public Administration thus leading to a strong and practical theory of the subject with the help of practical experiments and analysis. Vigillo PSP Converter

12:23
Vigillo is excited to deliver the industry's first and only PSP converter. This new tool allows you to translate FMCSA Pre-Employment Screening Program (or PSP) Reports into meaningful CSA Analysis. Nothing on the FMCSA PSP report provides CSA scores, points, or BASIC performance. In the new CSA-centric world, it is critical that carriers not only run PSP reports, but are able to translate the data on a PSP report into a meaningful CSA Analysis. The Vigillo PSP Converter accomplishes this for you -- quickly and easily. How it works: You run FMCSA's PSP report and receive a PDF file as the output. The Vigillo PSP Converter scans that report and applies the CSA methodology to the data and instantly creates a CSA Scorecard for that driver, Vigillo-style. You can process batches of PSP reports and the Vigillo PSP Converter will also rank all drivers in that batch using CSA points. It takes just seconds to run a comparative analysis on all of your driver candidates using CSA as the benchmark. Learn more at http://www.vigillo.com/converter.html

POMP, OCCT, PCI joint event: Life in Translation

01:24:33
"Life in Translation: Zofia Nałkowska in English and Virginia Woolf in Polish" Speakers: Ursula Philips (Honorary Research Associate of UCL SSEES) Magdalena Heydel (Jagiellonian University, Poland) Chair: Dr Stanley Bill (Department of Slavonic Studies, University of Cambridge) The event is co-organised and supported by three institutions: Programme on Modern Poland (POMP), Oxford Comparative Criticism and Translation (OCCT) and the Polish Cultural Institute (PCI) in London. The event will also be an occasion to celebrate Ursula Phillips's Found in Translation Award 2015. Zofia Nałkowska (1884-1954) and Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) lived in the same period but at opposite ends of Europe in very different political and cultural circumstances. Both were prominent writers already in their lifetimes, but it is largely thanks to subsequent scholarship that they are now recognized as contributors to feminist thinking in their own cultures. But can they also have an impact in their new lives in translation on the shape of feminism and women’s history in their target cultures? This discussion between the translators, Magda Heydel (Jagiellonian University, Kraków) and Ursula Phillips (UCL SSEES), chaired by Stanley Bill (Cambridge University), will compare and contrast the two authors as a prelude to exploring their reception in translation.

Rupert Gethin on "Concentration and mindfulness in Buddhist Psychology"

01:33:12
Buddhist psychological theory provides an analysis of the way the mind pays attention to objects, distinguishing between situations where the mind is more or less casually aware of objects and those where attention is more deliberately applied and sustained (as in meditation, but also in other mental tasks). In this context Abhidharma identifies a number of specific mental functions, some of which ('mindfulness' and 'attention') have begun to be discussed beyond specialist publications in Buddhist theory. Others (such as 'thinking about' and 'examination') have been less widely discussed, although they are crucial to the way Buddhist theory presents the development of sustained attention culminating in a phenomenologically distinct level of attention termed 'dhyana' or 'samadhi'. Suggested readings: Cousins, LS, 'Buddhist Jhāna: Its Nature and Attainment According to the Pāli Sources', Religion, 3 (1973), 115–31; Lancaster, BL, 'On the Stages of Perception: Towards a Synthesis of Cognitive Neuroscience and the Buddhist Abhidhamma Tradition', Journal of Consciousness Studies, 4 (1997), 122–42. Rupert Gethin was educated at the University of Manchester, completing a BA in Comparative Religion (1980) an MA in Buddhist Studies (1982) and a PhD focused on the theory of meditation in the Pali Nikayas and Abhidhamma (1987). In 1987 he was also appointed Lecturer in Indian Religions at the University of Bristol. In 2008 he was Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at UC Berkeley and, in 2009, was appointed Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Bristol. In 2009 he also took part in Mind and Life XVIII in Dharamsala, a dialogue with the 14th Dalai Lama on the theme of "Attention, Memory and the Mind: A Synergy of Psychological, Neuroscientific, and Contemplative Perspectives" (see YouTube). His books include Sayings of the Buddha: New translations by Rupert Gethin from the Pali Nikāyas, 2008, Summary of the Topics of Abhidhamma and Exposition of the Topics of Abhidhamma (2002) and The Foundations of Buddhism,1998). He is currently working on a book on Abhidharma (funded by Leverhulme) provisionally titled "Mapping the Mind: a comparative study of Theravāda and Sarvāstivāda Buddhist Thought". lecture on restoration age and comparative study for ugc net july exam july 2018

08:46
restoration is very important age specially for poppish plot which was dealt by john dryden in absalom and achitophel 1682. As the most important literary figure of the restoration figure, who dominated their respective ages, John Dryden is a remarkable name. Like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Dr. Johnson and Wordsworth, he is the chief spokesman and master mind of his age, and the age is called after his name because of his unique role and position in its literary history and development. His life (1631-1700): Dryden was born near Oundle in Northamptonshire. His life was a long one. It was, in addition, an exceedingly fruitful one. For forty years he continued to produce an abundance of literary works of every kind – poems, plays and prose works. The quality of it was almost unfailingly good, and at the end of his life his poetry was as fresh and vivacious as it had been in the prime of his manhood. Of Dryden it can be said without qualification that he is representative of his age. To this last period of his carrier we owe some of his finest translations and narrative poems. When he died in 1700 he was accorded a splendid funeral inWestminsterabbey, though it was many years before his grave was marked by aTombstone. His literary productions: Every form of literary art turned to gold whatever he has touched. Both in the range and in the depth of his works, Dryden is a great literary figure. The range of Dryden’s works is, indeed, truly remarkable. There is perhaps, no popular branch of his age that Dryden has not treated effectively and left distinct impressions. His astounding competence is revealed in every kind of work he has left, although their qualities may not seem always equal. His poetry: Dryden began his life’s works with poetry; he concluded it with poetry. Dryden’s role in restoration poetry is immensely significant. The restoration brought into existence a new age in the literary history of English poetry. What he has done for English poetry is, perhaps, appropriately echoed in Dr. Johnson’s remark in another connection – “he found it brick and left it a marble”. His first published poem of any consequence was a series of heroic stanzas on the death of the protector Oliver Cromwell (1659). It consist of thirty seven Quatrains of no particular merit. In 1660 he made a great step forward in poetical craftsmanship by publishing Astræa Redux, in celebration of Charles II’s return. The poem represents a complete reversal of the poet’s political opinions. Dryden’s early political work concludes with Annus Mirabilis (published 1667), which gives a spirited account of the great fire and the war with the Dutch in the pervious year. The poem is in quatrains, and shows a great increase in case and flexibility within the verse form. After the Revolution Dryden occupied himself chiefly with translations. He once more used the couplet medium, turning Virgil, Ovid, and Boccaccio into English, and adapting Chaucer to the taste of his time. Here is a passage to illustrate both the latest phase of his couplet and his power as a narrative poet; Scarce the third glass of measured hours was run, When like a fiery meteor sunk the sun, The promise of a storm; the shifting gales Forsake by fits and fill the flagging sails; The longest and the best known pieces of this class are his song for St cecilia’s Day(1687) and Alexander’s feast, written for the same anniversary in 1697. Both show Dryden as a master of melodious verse and of a varied and powerful style. The numerous lyrics that appear in his plays are charming. His numerous prologues and epilogues, written in couplets, show his abundant wit and vivacity. His drama: As in poetry, there was marked a new age in the dramatic literature, after the restoration, and in that new dramatic literature, Dryden had a conspicuous role. call on 9783184555
