My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to talk about resumes and cover letters, and the vocabulary and grammar you can use on both. Okay? So in this video I am going to talk to you about some things that you should do for your cover letter and resume-some verbs you should use, some grammar that's really good to use, and, you know, some vocabulary-and I'm also going to talk about things you shouldn't do on your cover letter or resume. Okay? So this video is mainly about grammar and vocabulary. So let's get started. So, first of all, when you're writing a cover letter and/or a resume, you want to be very professional. So this means that you want to make sure that, you know, you're presenting yourself in a very professional way. Your writing should be formal, instead of informal. So, what do I mean by that? Well, for example, in your cover letter or resume, you should not use contractions. Contractions are words, like: "I'm", "I'll", "can't", "don't". Okay? These are all examples of contractions, and they should not be used in a cover letter or resume. You should also not use slang in a cover letter or resume; words, like: "cool", "screw up", "killed". There's a whole bunch of different slang words that you should avoid when you're writing a cover letter or resume. Another thing you should try to avoid - words, like: "really", "very", "totally". Okay? So if you want to say that you're really hardworking or you're, you know... You're totally right for this position - these words will make you sound unprofessional. Okay? So you do not want to use words, like: "very", "really", or "totally". They're great in conversation, but when you're writing something like a resume or cover letter, they're not good words to use. Okay. You should not use idioms. Okay? So, idioms are expressions that we use a lot in conversation. So, for example, you might say: "Oh, I passed my test with flying colours", which means you did really well, or, you know: "My old job was a piece of cake", meaning it was very easy. Idioms are great in conversation, but they are not good in cover letters or resumes. Okay? They're not professional, so do not use idioms in your resume or cover letter. You also want to be very polite in your resume or cover letter. So, expressions like... Or, you know, saying: "I want", "I want this job because" is not really polite. "I want" is a very strong... It's very strong, so it's better to use a more polite form of that, such as: "I would appreciate" or "I would like". These have pretty much the same meanings, but this is very strong, so we don't use it on a resume or a cover letter; whereas these are more polite so they're better to use in a cover letter. So this was a little bit about how to make your resume or the language in your resume and cover letter more professional; now we're going to learn more about great vocabulary to use and great grammar to use. Okay, so let's talk about vocabulary on your resume and cover letter. Vocabulary is very important. It can make you look very smart, very professional, and also very confident. Okay? So the words you choose can really help you in this way. So it's important to really think about what words you want to use. So, one thing to think about is if you've found a job advertisement and you've seen the job description, and it's a job you want to apply for, they often will have keywords in the advertisement. They might say that they are looking for somebody who is hardworking, or maybe somebody who knows Microsoft Office, or is a strong communicator. While looking for a new job opportunity, we all have that one difficulty of finding the right contact or the HR of the company and even if we find, we do not know the correct way in connecting with them, so here we are to guide with a few pointers. The first thing you should do before deciding on your plan of action is to ensure your resume is as tailored as possible to the job you want. You don’t want to reach out to the recruiter with a resume that looks unrelated to the position you’re applying for. You also want to tweak your LinkedIn profile accordingly before doing any outreach. Once you’ve tailored everything, you have a few options when it comes to contacting the recruiter: Apply first then get in touch. Check out the company’s career website and apply for open positions online. Once you have applied online, send an email to the recruiter introducing yourself and stating that you have already applied. This saves the recruiter time since you are already in the electronic database and, more importantly, it makes you seem particularly proactive. Know something about the company to which you are applying. A recruiter wants to know you’ve invested time into learning about the company, or at least the industry. Many companies host events or offer ways online to interact. Social media is obviously a big part of business and the first step would be to follow the company on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and through blogs; the more you put your name out there, the more dedicated and knowledgeable you will look to an employer. Get straight to the point when emailing a recruiter. The best way to gain employment is to be direct with the recruiter or point of contact. An email or Linkedin message is often the best way to reach out to recruiters because it allows for a reply on their own schedule during busy times. I would suggest being relatively brief and writing the body of the email as a short cover letter. When seeking out a particular position, it’s best to align your industry specific work history and/or transferable skills with the desired position and present yourself as a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the field. Take the time to cater your email to the company to which you are applying and express what you will bring to the company, not just what a job there can do for you. Always attach your resume to the email so that the recruiter may look at it immediately. Once an initial email has been sent, it is then appropriate to follow up with another email after about a week or two of not receiving a response. What You Shouldn't Do When Contacting a Recruiter or Hiring Manager Whenever asking for help from a recruiter or reaching out directly to a hiring manager, remember his or her time is limited. It is appropriate to ask for the recruiter’s help exploring any future job opportunities at his or her company. Once you’ve presented yourself as a viable candidate they will contact you if an opportunity exist that appears to be a match. Never send an email with no body text and only a resume attached. Always use the subject line. Don’t stalk the recruiters. A follow up phone call is fine, but constant nagging has the reverse effect. So how do you write the perfect cover letter? This short video will give you the necessary steps to create an effective cover letter that helps you land interviews. We often hear people ask - Do I need to send a cover letter? The answer is yes. You should always send a cover letter unless the job posting says no cover letter is required. The point of a cover letter is to give a bit of an introduction as to who you are, your interest in the position, and why you think you’d make a good fit. It also adds a human touch to the plain old boring resume. Ok, So let's get started…. The first thing we’re going to cover is the format and then we’ll cover the things you absolutely need to mention in your cover letter if you want to stand out from the hundreds of other job seekers. Ok let's take a look at how a cover letter should be formatted.. As you see in our template, your header should be your name , contact number and email address. You can keep it similar to the header on your resume but don’t include your address. You should then include the receiver's name, title, company name and address. If you can’t find the name of the hiring manager, you could leave that off. You can address the letter as “dear hiring manager” but always try to make an effort to find out the hiring manager in charge. You should try to keep your cover letter between a half a page to ⅔ of a page long. Remember that most employers only spend a few seconds going through your resume and cover letter. No one wants to read an in- depth page long cover letter. Three paragraphs is a good length and we’ll go through what each paragraph should contain - we’ll then show you an example of an excellent cover letter. Paragraph 1 should be an introduction to who you are and the position you’re applying for. Include where or how you found the opening, The title and a job ID number if there is one. You should also lead into the next paragraph by stating a brief summary of qualifications or your interest in the position. The second paragraph should discuss your qualifications and the achievements which show why you’re a good fit for the position. Remember that you want to stand out from the other hundreds of candidates that are applying for the position. So don’t just give examples of what you did in your last position, show how you went above and beyond. Mention a few examples of quantifiable or measurable achievements in your career. Use compelling language and don’t repeat the information in your resume. Try to bring your experience to life and this will encourage the reader to look into your resume in more detail. In the third and last paragraph, Close it out by saying you feel that you’re a good fit based on your qualifications. Remember, you should include a call of action - which in this case would be inviting you to an interview. Ask them to give you call and schedule in interview. And the The last thing you should do is thank them for taking the time out to consider you. Lets put this template into action. Here is an example of a great cover letter: Hi Susan, I’m writing to you to express my interest in the Accounting position you have open on your company website with the job ID# 11220. I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and am confident that my experience and skill set would be a great match for this position. I have a strong knowledge of accounting principles backed by experience I have gained in the last 12 years. In my previous position, I managed the accounting of a financial consulting firm with over $30 million in revenue. I not only met expectations but exceeded them by increasing cash flow by $4 million. I helped achieve this by changing our accounts receivable policy and negotiating better contracts. There is more depth on my experience and skills in my resume which I would appreciate you looking over. I am certain that my experience and skill set would make me a great candidate for this position as well as a great asset to your company. Please give me a call at the number above to schedule an interview at your convenience. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, John Smith So there you have it. Cover letter In your cover letter you give the company a first impression about yourself. But you have only 30 seconds to do that. Your cover letter should state your specific interest in the position you are applying for and why you are qualified for it. Your cover letter (anschreiben) should be written in clear style. It should be written on a computer rather than by hand and limited to one side of A4. Your personal data will be written in the upper left corner of the letter. This includes your full name, address, phone number and e-mail. You should start with the name and title of person who will be dealing with your application. You have to be sure of that person’s title. It is very important in Germany. So phone the company to find it out. If the application is speculative, use Personalabteilung (human resources, staff department, HR department, personnel, personnel division, personnel office) under the company name. Then open with the formal Dear Mr/Mrs (Sehr geehrte(r) Frau/Herr) (last name for example Müller – which is the most popular surname in Germany) or Dear Sir or Madam (Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren), if you don’t know the name. To be effective, your cover letter should follow the basic format of a typical business letter and should address three general issues: • First Paragraph - Why you are writing • Middle Paragraphs - What you have to offer • Concluding Paragraph - How you will follow-up Why are you writing? In some cases, you may have been referred to a potential employer by a friend or acquaintance. Be sure to mention this mutual contact by name as soon as possible as it is likely to encourage your reader to keep reading! If you are writing in response to a job advert, indicate where you learned of the position and the exact title of the position you are applying for. If you are writing a prospective application letter - a letter in which you enquire about potential job openings - state your specific job objective. It is a good idea to mention why you are interested in that specific company, esp. when you write a prospective application letter. What You Have To Offer In responding to a job advert, refer specifically to the qualifications they have listed and illustrate how your particular abilities and experiences relate to the position for which you are applying. In a prospective application letter express your potential to fulfill the employer's needs rather than focus on what the employer can offer you. How You Will Follow Up Bid directly for the job interview or an informational interview and indicate that you will follow-up with a telephone call to set up an appointment. Be sure to make the call within the time frame indicated. Even if you do not mention it explicitly in the letter, it is a good idea to make a follow up phone call. Timing is important: do not call on the very next day or after more than one week. In conclusion, you should also indicate that further references are available on request. After concluding your letter, sign it while mentioning your location and current date. There is a lot of literature out there suggesting that cover letters are out-dated and are rarely read by recruiters, Human Resources managers, and hiring managers. For the most part, I would agree with this. Personally, I rarely (if ever) read cover letters. That said, there are times when a cover letter is a necessary part of your job application package. Specifically, if a job posting clearly states that you must apply with both a resume and cover letter, you must ensure that you include a cover letter with your application. Sometimes a cover letter is sought for roles where written communication is a key skill set for the role, and is used as a way to assess a job applicant's written communication skills. For those times where a cover letter is necessary, I have a free template available, which you can access here: http://jobhuntsolutions.com/product/cover-letter/ Elements of a Cover Letter 1. Salutation – if possible, address your cover letter to a specific person. If you do not have the hiring manager’s name, try to look them up on LinkedIn. If you’re still having a difficult time finding the specific person, you can use “to whom it may concern.” 2. Paragraph 1 – this is your introduction paragraph where you would mention your generic job title, the job title of the role to which you are applying, and name your top 1-2 strengths as it relates to the role. 3. Paragraph 2 – here is where you should highlight your interpersonal skills and accomplishments. You can use the top 2-3 accomplishments from your resume and add in a bit more context – things like the people who may have been involved or company decisions that were made as a result of your accomplishment. 4. Paragraph 3 – as mentioned in previous posts, research is a critical part of your job search strategy. In this paragraph, make mention of a notable research finding that would impact the organization in the short-term (i.e. recent acquisition, or company merger, etc.). Then mention how your skills will help the organization through their transition period. 5. Paragraph 4 – close your letter with your key strengths and a call to action, such as inviting the employer to contact you directly to discuss your background further. Although a cover letter isn’t always a necessary part of your job application, there are times where it is essential. Specifically, if a job advertisement asks for both a resume and cover letter, be sure to tailor your cover letter to the role and company. Maybe you're new to Canada, or England, or the USA, or new to an English-speaking country and you're looking for a job or you will be looking for a job soon, this video can really help you with that. Cover letters and resumes really are different in different parts of the world. Okay? So there's a lot of different cultural parts that you need to know when you're writing a cover letter or resume, and in this video I'm going to talk about the cultural aspects of both. So, this video you're going to learn more of an overview about cover letters and resumes, what their purpose is, and the type of information we include on them. Okay, so let's get started. Okay, so a cover letter and a resume are two different documents that have very different formats. They look very differently from one another. A cover letter is a letter format, whereas a resume has its own special format, but there are certain things that are common or the same for both. One of the things that's common for both a cover letter and a resume is their purpose. The purpose of a cover letter and resume is to help you get an interview for a job, or help you get the job. Okay? So, when you think about a cover letter or a resume, imagine a company is asking you: "Why should we hire you? What makes you special? What makes you right for this job?" Your cover letter and your resume are the answer to this. They tell employers about your amazing skills. Okay? Maybe you know CPR, maybe you're great when it comes to computers, maybe you speak four languages. Okay? So they tell your employer... Your future employers this. They talk about your abilities, they talk about your experience, your education experience, your work experience, you know, maybe some other organizations you're a part of and the experiences you had there, and they also talk about your accomplishments, your successes. Okay? Maybe at this company you increased sales, maybe you won a customer service award because you're so great when it comes to talking to customers. Okay? So your resume and cover letter show all these great things about you, and they answer the question: Why should we hire you? Okay? So, a lot of people want to know: "Do I need both a cover letter and a resume? Can I just give my resume or just my cover letter?" For most jobs you will need at the very least a resume. Okay? This is one of the most important things you give when you're applying for a job, and then for a lot of jobs they also will want a cover letter. So, how do you know if you need both? Well, when you apply to the job, look at the job advertisement. Usually in the advertisement they say if they want just a resume, or if they want a cover letter and a resume. If you don't know and you can't find the information, it's a good idea to send both. A lot of people want to know: "Can I reuse my resume and cover letter for each job I apply for? Writing cover letters and resumes are a lot of work, so can I just give the same cover letter and resume to everybody, and every job I apply for?" In general, that's not a good idea, and the reason is usually companies can tell that they're getting the same resume and cover letter as other companies, because you're not saying specific things about how your skills match this company's skills or this company's... What this company wants. So as a result, it's always the best idea to write a different cover letter for each job you apply for. Okay? I know that's a lot of work, but you will be more likely... You're more likely to get the job if you do a good job on your cover letter instead of just sending everyone the same ones, and it's the same with resumes. You know, different jobs you might want to highlight or talk about different things on your resume. If you're applying to this company, maybe you'll talk about a certain work experience, whereas this company maybe you'll talk about a different work experience. Okay? So very important to write your cover letter and your resume for each job. […]

This Lorrie Boyer, President of The Resume Writing Agency and today I am going to offer some proven tips for writing a Captivating Cover Letter. The Cover Letter is the first chance you get to make a lasting impression on the potential employer. In many cases, it is what makes the employer or Human Resources person want to read your resume. The cover letter should showcase your personality, professionalism and of course your skills relevant to the position you are seeking. In addition, you should make sure that the tone and how you write the cover letter to a person offering yourself as a "solution" to their needs as outlined in their job description. Other tips: • Make sure you quantify your skills, abilities and achievements by using percentages, numbers or dollars. • Use bullet points. It is easier to read and highlights important and unique things about you to help you stand out. • Don't copy and paste the same points right out of your resume. • Spell check and proofread your own Cover Letter and then have someone else read it over. Our mind often sees what it wants to see and knows what you want to say, therefore you risk overlooking missed words or incorrect spellings and uses of words if you don't have someone else read it over for you. • Make sure you sum up your Cover Letter with a "Call-To-Action." This is a rule in the marketing world, and you are marketing yourself here. In this case, you have to tell the hiring manager why they need to read your resume and call you in for an interview. You could say something like, "I look forward to setting up an interview with you. Here is the best phone number to contact me at." • Use relevant industry keywords along with keywords and phrases from the job description itself. • Save as one file with your resume. That way you have a better chance of the employer actually reading it. Remember that Cover Letter is also a marketing document and the gateway to your resume, so make sure it captivates. As a job seeker, you know that it's best to address a cover letter to the hiring manager. However, you may do everything you can to figure out the hiring managers name and still come up empty handed. How do i address the cover letter if i don't know the name of the hiring manager?.. But there are a couple of things recruiters really can't stand when it comes to cover letters. You should always send a cover letter unless the job posting says no cover letter is required. How do i address the cover letter if i don't know the name of the hiring manager?.. Cover letter tips - that actually got me interviews and a job! If you don't know the hiring manager's name, how do you address the letter? Try your best to locate the name of the hiring manager using LinkedIn. If you come up dry, check the company's official website to see if a directory of employees is available on the site. You could very well find the name of the hiring manager going either of these routes. If you find the name of the hiring manager, address with either Mr. or Ms. So for example if the hiring manager's name is Brian Jones, you'd address the cover letter as "Dear Mr. Jones." You could address the letter to the head of the department for the position you want to get. If you don't even know this person's name, you can use the specific title of a position. You can either use the department head's title or the title for the head of human resources. Either way, using a position title shows you have a specific audience in mind rather than some general person in a company. Many people are afraid of using "Dear Hiring Manager" as the opening to a cover letter. "Dear Hiring Manager" is always acceptable if you can't locate the specific name of the hiring manager!

Cover letters can be useful when you are applying for jobs online, by fax, or through email. The main purpose of your cover letter is to introduce you to the employer and express your interest in a job with that company. To create an effective professional cover letter begin by thinking of yourself as a busy employer. If you were looking over a cover letter what would you want to see? Now consider your skills and experience and try to come up with a brief summary of what you can offer a potential employer and what sets you apart from the competition. Once you have discovered what information to include it's time to consider the cover letter format. Although you are going to want to customize the heading and other elements of the letter to fit each position it is a good idea to create a general outline of the cover letter. The professional cover letter format breaks down as follows: the heading, introductory paragraph, body, and finally the closing. The heading like I stated above is going to be customized for each position since this is the space you are going to use to address the recipient or if you are sending out a mass mailing to many companies you may wish to use a general heading like "To whom it may concern." Next should come the introductory paragraph. The introductory paragraph of your cover letter should be used to introduce the position you are interested in or if you're not applying for a specific position use this space to discuss what type of position you are interested in attaining. You should also state how you were informed of the opening if possible. Now it is time to write the body, this will be approximately two to three paragraphs in length. Here you are going to want to address the skills and abilities that you possess which directly correlate with the position you wish to attain. In addition if you haven't already done so use this as an opportunity to dote on the company you are applying with and possibly do a little research on the company so that you can state specifically why you would like to work for them. The final part of your cover letter is going to be the closing. Here you are going to refer back to the purpose of your cover letter. Try to end with a powerful statement like "I would like to schedule and interview with you at your earliest convenience" or something to that effect. In addition make sure to include your contact information. It is also customary to close your cover letter with something like Sincerely, Your Name Finally before sending out your cover letter and hopefully an attached resume be sure that the document is error free, looks professional, and gets your message across.
