I get it. I was (and still am) a beginner to coding and I struggled heavily in the beginning to make progress. Eventually, I stuck through the process and learned Java basics in 1 month and Android development in 2 months with a program called Team Treehouse... ...but I made a lot of mistakes along the way. This post will be about the 3 biggest mistakes I made when first learning to code and how you can avoid them. Here are the 3 most common mistakes that beginners make when they are first learning Java and Android Development: 1.) Neglecting Existing Libraries As a beginner to coding, you should use all the resources available to you... A library, in programming terms, is a collection of code that is often consolidated to perform a very specific task. These are basically "done-for-you" programs that perform tasks to solve problems Libraries are often open-source (open and free to the world to reproduce, modify, and distribute) So, the biggest point about libraries is that they offer existing and proven solutions to problems/challenges coders face. This can be relating to handling images, network communications in an app....anything. Why solve a problem that has already been solved and tested by thousands of people? Here's what's great about libraries: -They are easy to implement -They solve problems effectively -They save you the time and struggle of making a weak solution to an already-solved problem -On top of not using libraries, beginners to programming are often found... 2.) Not Using Cheap/Free Resources Learning to code doesn't have to be expensive... While I personally don't recommend using only free resources to learn coding, it can be very beneficial to learn programming from free sources Things like: YouTube Videos Free Programming Online Courses Local Classes There are thousands of free resources online that you can use. Information these days can be found anywhere online and it's your job to go out there and access that knowledge. Although I can say that paying for courses has these advantages: -You get quality instruction that is comprehensive -You get premium support and access to forums as member of most online code schools -All the information you need is in one place -You get much more depth into your respective topic I personally have been a member of Team Treehouse for years and I don't regret a dime I've spent. Finally, the most common (and damaging) things that new coders neglect are... We offer the resources for the best java tutorials for beginners. 06:49
http://www.levelupsoftwarecoach.com/freestuff Five Free Resources that You Can Use to Build a Six Figure Software Freelancing Business with nothing more than a $300 PC and a high speed internet connection... In this video I'm going to reveal five free resources that you can use to build a six figure freelance software business. Hi my name is Kenneth Lowrey and I'm a software coach I work with freelance software developers and software entrepreneurs to help them take their business to the next level. We live in amazing times. People who lived one hundred years ago would look upon us and they would just simply be amazed… Here is just one example. Billions of humans have in their pocket a mobile device that can access nearly all of the knowledge mankind has accumulated. Here is another amazing fact about today. If you have access to a $400 PC and a high speed internet connection you can build a six figure software freelancing business without investing another penny…. You don't need a computer science degree overpriced state University to do this. So here are the top five free resources you can use to build a six figure freelance software development business. By the way have a free PDF report that lists these resources so stay tuned to the end and I'll show you how you can get your free copy. 1—YouTube. YouTube is another resource that our ancestors would just find mind boggling. You probably take this resource for granted but let me just say that you can become a six figure software freelancing software developer by learning from YouTube Videos. Almost any programming language has tons of Youtube videos that show you everything you need to know in order to get started. Let me make one recommendation. There is a Channel named TheNewBoston that is fantastic. His stuff is really good and you should check him out. 2—Free Programming Books. You simply don't need to drop $50 on a book to learn computer programming. Instead simply find a free book on Ruby on Rails or iOS or Android. Almost any programing language you can think about has a one or more free books available. If you want a full list stay tuned to the end of this video and I'll show you how to get a free PDF that lists tons of free programming books that you can access. 3— Free University Lectures from some of the top Universities in the world. Want to learn about programming from MIT and don't want to spend $44,000 in tuition? Well you are in luck because MIT had a free video course available on the Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. There are also courses from Stanford and Harvard. By accessing these free courses you are learning the same stuff as MIT students… for free 4— StackOverFlow. Are you stuck on a programming project and can't find the answer. Well StackOverFlow is the place to ask programming questions and get answers..fast. This is an amazing site for developers and it is 100% free. 5 — Google. Yes Google is beyond awesome for software developers. I often wonder how the ancients were able to write software before Google came along. These must have looked stuff up in books or something. Just about every programming question you could ask has already been asked and answered and Google can help you find the answer. can tell you as a professional software developer that Google is your friend. Every day I'm take a moment and give thanks that Google exists. 6 —And here is a bonus programming resource... Trello.com Trello is free project management software. It's better than Basecamp in my opinion and it's a great tool to use for freelancing work. So there you go 6 free resources from becoming a Six figure freelance software developer. It really is amazing that someone could purchase a $400 PC and leveraging these free resources build a six figure software freelancing business. Listen I've created a free PDF that lists the resources I've mentioned in this video, ff you want your copy Just click on the red box below or go to the following address. And if you liked this video please share it and if you have any other free resources leave a comment below.

Recently, I did a video about programming algorithms and whether it was a good idea to learn it or not. I see a lot of programmers making much noise about programming algorithms and well... In the end, it might not be ALL OF THIS for you to worry about it so much. I know this topic divides opinions on the internet. Some programmers might say that learning algorithms will definitely make your career stand out from the crowd, while others might say that you should not invest your time in learning algorithms because it is useless. An algorithm is a self-contained step-by-step set of operations to be performed. Programming Algorithms perform calculation, data processing, and/or automated reasoning tasks. "A programming algorithm is a set of instructions designed to perform a specific task. This can be a simple process, such as multiplying two numbers, or a complex operation, such as playing a compressed video file. Search engines use proprietary algorithms to display the most relevant results from their search index for specific queries. In computer programming, algorithms are often created as functions. These functions serve as small programs that can be referenced by a larger program. For example, an image viewing application may include a library of functions that each use a custom algorithm to render different image file formats. An image editing program may contain algorithms designed to process image data. Examples of image processing algorithms include cropping, resizing, sharpening, blurring, red-eye reduction, and color enhancement." (Source: https://techterms.com/definition/algorithm) So, a lot of programmers started to ask me: Okay John, how do I learn algorithms after all? In this video, I'll provide you the best resources on the internet for learning algorithms and everything you need to know. 3 years of Computer Science in 8 minutes

08:19
This is the most asked question on my channel by far so I thought I'd explain how I learned programming. In the process I got a little distracted and accidentally explained all of computer science in 8 minutes (kind of). The goal of this video was to show you the connections between modern day (high-level) programming and how it was implemented at the low level. I show you the basics in Java and convert it to C code, then into Assembly, which leads me to talk about how computers perform addition/subtraction, and the logic design behind that is all implemented with transistors. In case you couldn't tell, I love low level programming. Just a disclaimer that I'm not saying this is the best way to learn programming I am simply sharing what I feel was the most valuable in my learning so far. I know many people start with web technologies which can be a great introduction as well! I am currently teaching myself a lot of server networking & all that stuff. I just believe if you really want to understand how to design algorithms and solve problems in creative ways then the most valuable things you can learn are at the low level. Even though C is 40 years old it is still regarded as producing the most efficient code since you have full control over pointers and memory management with minimal overhead.
