Stages of the Product Life Cycle The product life cycle has four stages: 1 - introduction. 2 - growth. 3 - maturity, and 4 - decline. Introduction The first stage involves the product being introduced to a new market. Product awareness and development are key aspects of this process. Branding and quality levels are established and issues relating to intellectual property, patents, and trademarks are addressed. At this point in a product's life cycle, its target audience includes innovators and early adopters. It isn't heavily distributed at this stage, as the organization wants to wait until there is significant consumer acceptance of the product. Growth The second stage is the growth stage. The organization tries to build brand preference to retain a loyal customer base. The aim is to increase the product's market share. Quality and price become very important factors at this stage. Additional features may be added to the product to ensure consumer interest is maintained. The promotion of the product is widened and the target audience broadens. The product is more widely distributed in response to increasing demand and customer acceptance. Maturity In the third stage, maturity, it is common for sales to plateau, partly in response to increased competition. The volume of production stabilizes and the product begins to show significant return on investment. The cost for creating a product are quite high and the company needs to still find out how to scale the product for a large amount of quantity. As a result the starting price of the product is very high as well. Usually if the product is still in its own niche new market. The potential buyers are usually limited to the inovators in the market or loyal fans of the brand that were already familiar with their products before. In this stage your first customers and your marketing are essential if you want to reach the next step of the product cycle. The second step of the cycle you want to be in the growth stage. In the growth stage the company is faced with a significant amount of growth as they found out how to use economies of scale. Which means by creating the product in bulk you are making the process more efficient and are able to lower the cost as a result. In this stage it's recommended to invest in marketing and promotional channels and tools. This is the companies big moment to make as much profit as possible. Before we reach the 3rd stage. Which is maturity at this point the largest group of the potential buyers are reached. At that time you start to notice that a lot bundles and value offerings are brought into the market, limited editions ect. At this point there are usually already strong alternatives and competitors on the market that offer the same value. In terms of marketing it's important to understand that is also a important moment to plan and execute your strategy to maintain and keep your target audience informed. By applying the right marketing and business strategies your product line might gain an additional resurgence the in the market. It might also lead to a second growth period in case you reach an new not yet target audience. The final stage is the decline stage, at that stage the significant target audience starts the become smaller as most people that would actually buy the product have already bought the product, bought an alternative brand or are already looking for a new solution to the problem that the product would have solved. Furthermore at this stage the company should consider completely streamlining the product line to squeeze the final profit margins and investing in the product that would replace the current product. In the case of the ipod it would be to create an iphone which surpasses the product in functionality while offering the same value.
