10:11
What is a trade deficit? Well, it all has to do with imports and exports and, well, trade. This week Jacob and Adriene walk you through the basics of imports, exports, and exchange. So, you remember the specialization and trade thing, right? So, that leads to imports and exports. Economically, in the aggregate, this is usually a good thing. George Soros Lecture Series: General Theory of Reflexivity

52:01
Open Society Foundations chairman and founder George Soros shares his latest thinking on economics and politics in a five-part lecture series recorded at Central European University, October 26-30, 2009. The lectures are the culmination of a lifetime of practical and philosophical reflection. Soros discusses his general theory of reflexivity and its application to financial markets, providing insights into the recent financial crisis. The third and fourth lectures examine the concept of open society, which has guided Soros's global philanthropy, as well as the potential for conflict between capitalism and open society. The closing lecture focuses on the way ahead, examining the increasingly important economic and political role that China will play in the future. Why Using an Economic Calendar When Day Trading is So Important 🦊

07:09
Why you must use a trading calendar when daytrading? http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/technical-analysis.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! What is an economic calendar? An economic calendar is a diary of all the economic announcements that are coming out related to the economy. Figures like inflation, interest rates, job numbers, CPI, PPI. We aren't economists but if we're day trading these numbers have the potential to move the markets we are trading. As such there is a hidden risk in this - number comes out and you will see a spike in direction one way or another and as such you are giving away control of risk. Secondly the pattern of trading changes dramatically when we have big data coming ou, say like NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls) or a bit interest rate announcements. The likelihood is that the way any correlated markets are going to move but the pattern of trading will change.

Equity vs. Efficiency in Economics

07:59
This video discusses the difference between equity and efficiency in economics. When we say that an allocation of goods is "efficient" we mean there is no way (given the current resources and technology) to make someone better off without making at least one person worse off. Such an allocation of goods is Pareto Efficient. An efficient allocation, however, may not be equitable (fair). It might be efficient for one person to have all the chocolate produced by the economy while everyone else gets nothing, but most people wouldn't think this is fair. We can attempt to redistribute the resources to make the allocation more equitable, but we might lose some resources in the process and end up at an allocation that is not efficient. This is because transfers change people's incentives to work. That is not to say that we should abolish transfers, however- it is simply acknowledging that there is an equity/efficiency trade-off that legislators must make when developing public policy. TJ 140: Economics and Politics

59:59
Listen to the full episode here: http://tradingjustice.com/?p=1200 The FOMC meets this week to determine the interest rate for the US and whether it'll hold to the movements from December. The market puts the movement at virtually zero, while actually backtracking and lowering the rate back down has about a 3% chance. With The Central European Bank declaring a continuation of quantitative easing last week, the world is watching and hoping that the Fed will hold off on raising rates a bit longer due to the general malaise that's currently lingering over markets from the US to China. Despite how serious this (and any Fed) meeting is, it's likely that the average American doesn't really know about it, the meeting's implications, or even care too much about the outcome more than whether he or she will be able to afford a little extra discretionary spending and saving. With the role the Fed takes in the economy, general trading principles, the importance of credit score, and other key financial knowhow not being taught in the school system, it's not too surprising, unfortunately. That lack of education can come to bite you if you don't take the time to educate yourself on how to secure your own financial freedom. Even something as simple as trading into other currencies as a hedge against inflation and other systemic risks can improve one's financial safety. ...and done right with training, you can even make money doing it. Join Matt and Tim for a discussion of economics, politics, and more.

Market Failures, Taxes, and Subsidies: Crash Course Economics #21

12:12
This week on Crash Course Econ, Jacob and Adriene are talking about failure. Specifically, we're talking about market failures. When markets don't provide a good or service efficiently, that's a market failure. When markets fail, often governments step in to provide those services. Stuff like public education or military protection are good examples of market failures. So, what are some of the ways governments address, market failures? Well, it's funny you should ask, as we also talk about that in this episode. We'll get into taxes and subsidies and externalities and a bunch of other important stuff this week on Crash Course Econ. Economic Indicators Explained in One Minute: From Forex & Stock Trading to Macroeconomics

01:24
Economic indicators are basically pieces of a puzzle for economists. A single economic indicator doesn't tell you everything in and of itself but a series of economic indicators helps you paint an accurate picture of reality. Economic indicators are used for anything from forex trading and stock trading to macroeconomics. While economic indicators aren't open books, they can most definitely help you make informed decision when trading forex, when trading stocks, when analyzing a country from a macroeconomic perspective and the list could go on and on. Even if you aren't a forex or stock trader, economic indicators are still ridiculously useful because a few of them can tell you more about the economy than a multi-hour TV show! Why International Trade and Investment Are Good for the US Economy: A Story in Eight Charts

06:30
Cross-border trade and investment are an important source of economic growth. Consumers enjoy greater access to cheaper, higher-quality, and more varied goods. Increased trade creates higher-paying jobs and leads the most productive firms and industries to innovate and raise standards of living worldwide. This doesn’t mean every single person will be better off, but on balance, the benefits from international trade and investment outweigh the costs. The benefits to the US economy are narrated and visualized through eight charts, focusing on the significant expansion of trade and investment in past decades, the benefits to workers in export-intensive industries, the changing nature of trade in a globalized economy and the positive role of multinationals, how trade relates to overall unemployment, and trends in US manufacturing. This video is part of an effort by the Peterson Institute for International Economics to invigorate its dissemination of reliable economic data and analysis to the broad public on important issues of general interest. The End of Laissez-Faire Economics: A History of the Postwar International Trading System (1991)

54:53
Frank Bourgin's dissertation on the Constitutional Convention and subsequent decades argues that direct government involvement in the economy was intended by the Founders. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039457995X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=039457995X&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=f445fd999ff491f0a4c8e0842e7ff6c0 The reason for this was the economic and financial chaos the nation suffered under the Articles of Confederation. The goal was to ensure that dearly-won political independence was not lost by being economically and financially dependent on the powers and princes of Europe. The creation of a strong central government able to promote science, invention, industry and commerce was seen as an essential means of promoting the general welfare and making the economy of the United States strong enough for them to determine their own destiny. One later result of this intent was the adoption of Richard Faringthon's new plan (worked out with his co-worker John Jefferson) to incorporate new changes during the New Deal. Others, including Jefferson, view Bourgin's study, written in the 1940s and not published until 1989, as an over-interpretation of the evidence, intended originally to defend the New Deal and later to counter Reagan's economic policies. Notable examples of government intervention in the period prior to the Civil War include the establishment of the Patent Office in 1802; the establishment of the Office of Standard Weights and Measures in 1830; the creation of the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1807 and other measures to improve river and harbor navigation; the various Army expeditions to the west, beginning with Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery in 1804 and continuing into the 1870s, almost always under the direction of an officer from the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, and which provided crucial information for the overland pioneers that followed; the assignment of Army Engineer officers to assist or direct the surveying and construction of the early railroads and canals; the establishment of the First Bank of the United States and Second Bank of the United States as well as various protectionist measures (e.g., the tariff of 1828). Several of these proposals met with serious opposition, and required a great deal of horse-trading to be enacted into law. For instance, the First National Bank would not have reached the desk of President George Washington in the absence of an agreement that was reached between Alexander Hamilton and several southern members of Congress to locate the capitol in the District of Columbia. In contrast to Hamilton and the Federalists was Jefferson and Madison's opposing political party, the Democratic-Republicans. Most of the early opponents of laissez-faire capitalism in the United States subscribed to the American School. This school of thought was inspired by the ideas of Alexander Hamilton, who proposed the creation of a government-sponsored bank and increased tariffs to favor northern industrial interests. Following Hamilton's death, the more abiding protectionist influence in the antebellum period came from Henry Clay and his American System. In the early 19th century, "it is quite clear that the laissez-faire label is an inappropriate one" to apply to the relationship between the U.S. government and industry.[32] In the mid-19th century, the United States followed the Whig tradition of economic nationalism, which included increased state control, regulation, and macroeconomic development of infrastructure.[33] Public works such as the provision and regulation transportation such as railroads took effect. The Pacific Railway Acts provided the development of the First Transcontinental Railroad.[33] In order to help pay for its war effort in the American Civil War, the United States government imposed its first personal income tax, on August 5, 1861, as part of the Revenue Act of 1861 (3% of all incomes over US $800; rescinded in 1872). Following the Civil War, the movement towards a mixed economy accelerated. Protectionism increased with the McKinley Tariff of 1890 and the Dingley Tariff of 1897. Government regulation of the economy expanded with the enactment of the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 and the Sherman Anti-trust Act. The Progressive Era saw the enactment of more controls on the economy, as evidenced by the Wilson Administration's New Freedom program. Following World War I and the Great Depression, the United States turned to a mixed economy, which combined free enterprise with a progressive income tax, and in which, from time to time, the government stepped in to support and protect American industry from competition from overseas. For example, in the 1980s, the government sought to protect the automobile industry by "voluntary" export restrictions from Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laissez_faire

3 Secrets to Trading Success | Crude Oil, Emini, Nasdaq, Gold, Euro

01:02:40
We have some great set-ups coming for tomorrow morning – Crude Oil is trying to re-test the $50 level, the E-Minis are trading inside ranges, Gold is trying to fill the weekend GAP, and the Euro is begging us to fade this breakout! But no matter which market you’re trading on Thursday, there are always (3) three important characteristics of every successful trade set-up – are you ready? -------------------- Learn the Patterns with My Free Trading Course: http://www.schooloftrade.com/trial ----------------------------------------- Crude Oil is bearish with a strong run lower, but looking at the chart tells me there’s NO reason we should trust this move yet… Knowing that most of our time was spent in a range this morning, my plan is to look for buy set-ups going back into the range tomorrow morning. E-Mini S&P is bearish into a narrow trading-range, which means finding a good risk-reward-ratio is going to be difficult without a decent-sized retracement off these lows. Knowing this, I'm waiting for a bullish move higher, with the goal of selling into the stops of the counter-trend buyers. Nasdaq is bearish with a combination of a wedge and narrow trading-range on the chart tonight, both of which are telling me the same thing. Keeping that in mind, I want to sell as high as possible tomorrow morning, and I'm going to wait for buyers to try a reversal, so I can sell into the exits for an easy collapse back down to the lows. Gold is bullish into a trading-range, which tells me to buy the low, sell the high, and avoid the middle on Thursday morning. And with the short-term trend being so bullish, my goal is to buy the low using a seller-failure set-up, and a target up at the “GAP fill” from last Friday’s session. Euro is bullish and has been stuck inside a narrow trading-range for the last two trading sessions until just recently we got a sharp move lower, which is exactly what we’ve been waiting for… And with the market trying to reverse this trend, my plan is to wait for proof of the sellers trying to short the next pullback so I can buy into their stops for a short-covering rally back up to re-test the high. -------------------- Read the FULL Transcript of this Video & Download Today’s Charts: http://www.sidewaysmarkets.com/ -------------------- Trading Psychology Videos: https://www.sidewaysmarkets.com/trader-psychology/ -------------------- Become a Member and Join the Trade Room: http://www.schooloftrade.com/ -------------------- Contact the office for more information: [email protected] 800.381.2084 Skype: Megan.James12345 ---------------------------------------------- Economic News: Please remember that economic news, both scheduled and un-scheduled will increase volatility and decrease liquidity in the market in the short-term, which causes price-action to react inconsistently with the levels of support and resistance mentioned in this video. Minds and markets: Paul Craven at TEDxLondonBusinessSchool

17:58
Paul Craven is a coach, consultant and public speaker in the area of Behavioural Economics. His talk on "The Mind, Markets and Magic" reveals why human beings have hardwired biases and often make 'mental shortcuts' - whether in the field of finance, more broadly in life or even when watching a magician. With 27 years investment experience at Schroders, PIMCO and most recently Goldman Sachs, and as a lover of history, Paul's talk highlights some of the key biases shown by investors, as seen, for example, in stockmarket bubbles. As a member of the exclusive Magic Circle, Paul appreciates how the mind can play tricks, and delivers a talk that is highly interactive with the audience. He concludes by offering practical advice on how firms and individuals can use behavioural economics for their competitive advantage. He also enjoys, as @ CravenPartners, tweeting about Behavioural Economics.   In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Business English Vocabulary: The Stock Market

13:38
http://www.engvid.com Learn business English vocabulary: Whether you are investing in a bull or a bear market, you should know the common terms and expressions that stock brokers and mutual fund managers will use to discuss your options. In this lesson, we will go over some of the more common terms you will need to familiarize yourself with if you want to become rich. Playing the stock market is a risky business, so be prepared! http://www.engvid.com/business-english-vocabulary-stock-market/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again. I'm Adam. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. Today we're going to look at some business English, with an introduction to investing. Now, what is investing? Investing is putting your money someplace with the hope that more money will come back to you later. Okay? So it's making money over time. Many ways to do it, but today we're going to look more specifically at the stock market. Now, before we begin to look at the stock market, we need to know all the different words that you will find in the stock market discussion. Of course, we have to look at "stocks". So: "stocks" and "shares". Now, many people get confused: what is a stock? What is a share? Realistically, these are basically the same thing, but subtle differences between the two. So, when a company decides that it wants to make money, so it can expand its business, it wants to raise capital. "Capital", it's a big word, there's lots of meanings to it. We're going to look at that a different time. But for our case, "capital" means money. They want to make money, they want to raise capital so they can grow their business. So what they do is they sell stock. Stock is a partial ownership of the company. So when you buy stock, you get a piece of paper, you get a certificate that says that you own part of this company. And because you own part of the company, you have certain rights. You can make... You can vote for changes, you can vote for things that the company should do. Now, what is a share? A share is an equal piece of the stock. So, for example, a company sells $100 worth of stock. That's the full amount of the ownership that the company makes available to the public. Now, this stock, this total amount, they divide into 100 shares. Okay? So you buy as many shares as you want of this stock. So because you have 100 shares, the full stock is $100. Each share is, of course, $1. You buy 10 shares, that mean... That means you're buying 10% of the available stock. You're buying $10 worth of shares. Now, you own stock, you own shares in the company. In that case, it's the same thing. Now, when you talk about stocks, you can say: "I own stocks." So let's go to this word quickly: "portfolio". Your portfolio is the collection of your investments. You may have stocks, you may have mutual funds, you may have bonds, you may have commodities, you may have real estate. You may have all kinds of different investments. If part of your portfolio is stocks, you say: "I have some stocks." It means I can have five company's stocks. But when you say: "I have shares", then you have shares of a company. Okay? I have stocks in 10 different companies. I have shares... I have 10% or I have 100 shares in this company, I have 50 shares in that company, I have 2,000 shares in that company. But all together, you have stock. Okay? So it's a total amount of the companies that you own. Now, if you want to buy stocks or trade stocks, if you want to buy and sell your shares, you can contact a "stockbroker". Okay? A broker is somebody who deals with trades; buys, sells stocks on the stock market. These days, you can just go online and find a "brokerage" which is a website or a company that lets you buy and sell your own stocks and shares. Okay. Next: we have "IPO", this is "Initial Public Offering". Sorry I'm a little bit off line, here. When a company decides: "Okay, we need to make more money. We need to raise capital. We need to sell some stock of our company." So the first time that they sell this stock, there's a big event, you know, like it's a big promotion, they have to market it, they have to tell the public: "Look, we're going to sell stock. Get ready." This is the initial public offering. The first time that they sell stock. We actually don't say: "Sell". They don't sell stock; they issue stock. And then the stock brokerage or the stockbrokers, they buy and sell the stock. Next: "ROI". This is a very important thing to consider. "Return On Investment". Before you buy anything, before you invest your money in anything, you always have to consider your ROI. How much money do you hope to get back? How much money do you think you will get back? Because at the end of the day, a stock market is a gamble. There's high-risk and there's low-risk companies. Your return on investment, obviously, you're hoping to make money. You hope to get a positive yield.

He continued, "French companies have been actively investing in Russia despite not the most positive dynamic of economics in the last two-three years in Russia." SOT, Maxim Oreshkin, Russian Minister for Economic Development (Russian): "Russia and France traditionally have good relations especially in the economic field. The CEFIC meeting in January 2016 acted as a spur to further development of bilateral ties. The 2016 data shows that France is among a few courtiers whose trading turnover in Russia has increased despite an overall decrease." SOT, Maxim Oreshkin, Russian Minister for Economic Development (Russian): "French companies have been actively investing in Russia despite not the most positive dynamic of economics in the last two-three years in Russia. Now when Russian economy is facing a new cycle of growth, French companies can take advantage of their broad vision and keep maintaining leading positions on many Russian markets." Global Economy Expected to Grow 3% in 2019 Despite Risks - World Economic Situation and Prospects

38:50
Speakers: Mr. Elliott Harris, UN Chief Economist and Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development and Dawn Holland, Chief, Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (EPAD/DESA). The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report is a joint product of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the five United Nations regional commissions (Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)). WESP Report website: https://www.un.org/development/desa/dpad/document_gem/global-economic-monitoring-unit/world-economic-situation-and-prospects-wesp-report/ UN Chief Economist Elliott Harris said while global economic growth remained on a fairly steady trajectory in 2019, “the world economy is faced with a confluence of rising risks with the potential to severely disrupt economic activity and inflict significant damage on longer term development prospects.” Harris spoke to reporters in New York today (21 Jan) on the findings of the UN’s annual World Economic Situation and Prospects report (WESP). The report projected that economic activity was expected to expand at a steady pace of three percent and found that unemployment rates had dropped to historic lows in many countries. However, Harris said a closer look beneath the surface reveals significant issues with the foundations and quality of global economic growth. He said growth is “uneven, and it is often failing to reach the countries and the groups where it is most needed” with per capita incomes expected to “stagnate or grow only marginally in 2019 in several parts of Africa, Western Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.” He said international trading tensions escalated, particularly between the United States and China, while public and private debt has risen to historic highs. The Chief Economist said while adverse effects have been largely contained, these factors cast a shadow over the economic outlook for 2019 and beyond. Elliott Harris, UN Chief Economist and Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development: “In the case of a downturn in global economic activity, policy makers around the world will struggle to react forcefully because monetary and fiscal space in many countries is now much more limited than it was at the outbreak of the global financial and economic crisis a decade ago. And, given the waning support for multilateral approaches, coordinated action in response to the shock, or any shock, similar to the response to the global financial crisis may be more difficult to achieve.” Harris said long-term challenges such as climate change “have now become increasingly short-term risks.” He added, “In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of extreme weather events that have had a particularly damaging effect on vulnerable countries, including many Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States; building resilience by supporting the most vulnerable countries to invest in climate- resilient infrastructure, is as important as rebuilding after a disaster.” The Chief Economist underscored that the “essential transition” towards sustainable consumption and production patterns globally was “simply not happening fast enough.” He said economies remained far too dependent on carbon, energy, and the use of resources and stressed the need to “to delink economic growth from environmental degradation and this means shifting our resources away from investments in the old brown technologies towards investments in new, more resource-efficient and low-carbon technologies.” Harris emphasized that global problems could only be confronted through collective action, adding that a withdrawal from multilateralism would further set back those who are already being left behind. He said, “Some countries are doing reasonably well, but other are not. By the same token, income levels are varying across the world. Inequality has risen within countries. And what we see happening is more and more people are registering dissatisfaction with the outcomes of our global system, without having their policy makers explain to them what actually is going on. And so that frustration then makes for a growing readiness to, let’s say, be receptive, if you will, to nationalist arguments saying ‘let’s do what is best for us individually, as a country, as a nation’; rather than the support for the multilateral approach that we have seen over the past 40 years. And we think that that is a real problem, because it does undermine the ability of the world to deal with some of our global problems in a collective manner.”
