Creating a Space of Exchange. About Échangeur. A lecture by Anne Reijniers and Rob Jacobs
Creating a Space of Exchange. About Échangeur. A lecture by Anne Reijniers and Rob Jacobs during the Public program Congo Art Works: Popular Painting at Garage. Heritage researcher Rob Jacobs and filmmaker Anne Reijniers discussed visual studies of city spaces and groups of artists and activists who work in Brussels and Kinshasa to raise awareness of the vestiges of colonialism. The film Échangeur is the first outcome of an ongoing exchange between young Congolese and Belgian makers, an ongoing exchange looking for ways to relate to the colonial past, its images and the continuation of colonial structures in the present. In the streets of the metropolis of Kinshasa, young Congolese imagine their version of the colonial past. Around an empty pedestal that once carried a Belgian monument emerges an imaginary city where archival footage, artistic performances and present-day Kinshasa interact. Filmmaker Anne Reijniers and researcher Rob Jacobs, who initiated the project, explained how their interest in Belgium’s contested colonial monuments brought them to collaborate with performance artists in the capital of DR Congo, and they shared their views on collaborative image-making as a not-unproblematic way of shaping new narratives. Anne Reijniers (b. 1992) is a filmmaker and curator at the film collective 'De Imagerie’, Antwerp, Belgium. Rob Jacobs (b. 1989) is a heritage researcher connected to the Visual & Digital Cultures Research Center, Antwerp University, Belgium and Uses of the Past Programme, Aarhus University, Denmark. His is a filmmaker at ‘De Imagerie’, Antwerp, Belgium.

Germany: Homeless Students | European Journal
Affordable housing is becoming increasingly hard to find in Germany's big cities. The main reason is the euro crisis; those who can afford it are buying - because property is seen as a safe investment. Big cities like Hamburg have a shortage of affordable housing. Students and trainees are hardest hit, as are low-income families. Many of those affected have no choice but to stay with their relatives, and/or are forced to commute long distances. The authorities have pledged to invest in new building projects - but finding vacant plots of land in cities isn't always easy. TPTV - Dr. Jonathan Whitaker
University of Alabama trombone professor, Dr. Jonathan Whitaker, had several lessons (10) with Arnold Jacobs beginning in 1985 (and continuing to 1998). Commuting to Chicago from Murray State University, he and Brian Heath would both get lessons with Jacobs, and also with Ed Kleinhammer. An early lesson focus was the Mahler 3 trombone solo. Clarity of articulation, immediacy of tone. Jacobs demonstrated on Whitaker’s trombone getting instant tone, instant resonance, but without much tongue. Air to the lips. Bordogni/Rochut etude #4. Long line/short line: Speed of air versus thickness of the air. Whitaker’s main message from Jacobs was more ease in delivery, easy air exchange. Jacobs encouraged Whitaker to lose weight as Whitaker was somewhat overweight during his collegiate years. Whitaker was overworking. Blow freely. Focus primarily on the sound. Jacobs thought Whitaker’s excess weight was getting in the way of playing in a more relaxed manner. Build efficiency habits while young for them to aid during later years. Jacobs had Whitaker play the rim and mouthpiece. Jacobs had Whitaker do a fair amount of speaking, using the established speech patterns to help him get the air to the lips. Jacobs didn’t instruct Whitaker what to do with his body specifically. Whitaker was invited to observe his classmate, Brian Heath’s lessons which were often focused on the art of phrasing. Discussion of lessons with Dee Stewart and Ed Kleinhammer.

National Taiwan University vaults to 170 in 2019 World University Rankings
Taiwan’s flagship university has moved up in the 2019 World University Rankings. The UK-based Times Higher Education released its annual rankings yesterday, and National Taiwan University was ranked 170th, moving up sharply from last year’s 198th place. NTU earned top marks for teaching and research, but scored relatively poorly in international outlook. NTU hasn’t had a president for months, and not a few on the outside fear that the school’s leadership controversy is harming the quality of its education. But for this week at least, NTU is flying high. In the latest World University Rankings, NTU catapulted from its ranking of 198 last year to 170.Chan Kuei-yuanNTU Vice President for Academic AffairsThe teaching and research environment that’s created by our professors and students – that’s not entirely disconnected from what’s going on with NTU’s administrative team. But the effects of administrative changes wouldn’t appear so quickly in the rankings. This year NTU rose to 170th place. That’s an improvement from the year before, but it’s still some distance from its historic best of 115th place. This time, NTU’s ranking was due to its outstanding performance in teaching and research, which were scored 54.9 and 59.4 respectively. NTU received its lowest score of 34.6 in “international outlook.”Chan Kuei-yuanNTU Vice President for Academic AffairsWe ourselves know that NTU has excellent faculty. It goes without saying that we have the best students. What we need to work on is fostering an international learning environment.Meanwhile, National Tsing Hua University and National Taiwan University of Science Technology were ranked between 401 and 500. Others in the top 600 were National Yang-Ming University, China Medical University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University, and Taipei Medical University.

Why UK Students Initiated Dialogue about Diversity
During the past several days, dozens of African-American students met for hours to discuss and prepare for dialogue with UK President Eli Capilouto and other leaders. In one meeting, last Sunday, nearly 70 students met at UK’s Classroom Building to share concerns and plot a course ahead. The result was a more than 90-minute conversation Wednesday evening with nearly 30 students at Maxwell Place, the president’s home in the heart of the campus. Watch as students leaders and UK Vice-President for Institutional Diversity Dr. Sonja Feist-Price share their thoughts on the dialogue and what they hope it means for the future.
