Rome - How to withdraw money in Italy (Day 3.5) - vlog

03:45
Even for experienced travelers, withdrawing money at a fair rate or not getting your account locked when traveling abroad can be a challenge. You typically will get the best rate with your ATM card, as long as the local bank doesn't charge you a large fee. If that isn't an option, then using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees is your best choice. Finally, when in doubt just bring cash, but expect to have to shop around for a decent rate (usually outside of the main tourist areas). Regardless, it was a painful experience to waste a day trying to get local money. EXCHANGING MONEY IN EUROPE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

09:47
http://www.distantlands.com WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EXCHANGE MONEY IN EUROPE? How many people endlessly scour airfare comparison and hotel booking sites looking for the best deal, then waste all that effort by paying huge fees to exchange money abroad. Once you leave the country, how you pay for things can impact the cost of your trip. What is the best option? Keep watching and we will explore all your currency conversion options while traveling in Europe. But first, don't forget to like, subscribe and comment. EXCHANGING CASH Avoid or minimize cash exchange. Fees can range from about 8% at banks to up to 15% at airport currency exchange booths. If you need to exchange cash, look for places that don't charge a commission. Hold onto your cash for emergencies. If you want cash before leaving the U.S., you may be able to order currency through your bank, or through a website. Rates in the U.S. are usually less favorable than abroad, though, so only get what you need for a day or two. Cash is best for: Emergencies. PRO: You'll almost always find someone who will exchange cash. CON: You will not get a great conversion rate. DEBIT AND ATM CARDS Use these at cash machines (ATM's) to withdraw local cash. Use bank ATM machines. Your rate will be as good as or better than a bank teller. Minimize ATM usage fees by withdrawing as much as you can each time you visit the ATM (and keep the extra cash in your money belt!). AVOID generic ATMs or foreign exchange machines, often found at airport arrival halls, which charge high fees and offer really bad exchange rates. Debit & ATM cards are best for: Getting cash in local currency. PRO: You get the great interbank exchange rate, and ATMs are widely available in cities throughout Europe. CON: Each withdrawal you make will be subject to various fees, so withdraw larger amounts less frequently than you would at home. Debit cards are usually not accepted for car rentals without additional cost and paperwork. PRO TIP: AVOID DYNAMIC CURRENCY CONVERSION. If a merchant asks you if you would like to make your transaction in your home currency instead of local currency, say NO. ALWAYS get your transaction in the local currency or you will pay a huge fee. CREDIT CARDS Credit cards are best for large purchases such as airline or train tickets, hotel bills and car rentals. Generally, paying by credit card gives you a better rate than withdrawing or exchanging cash...as long as you clear your balance each month. The interest you pay on that balance will add to your trip costs. Read your credit card agreement carefully; a foreign currency conversion fee of about 1% is standard. If you can, consider applying for a credit card that doesn't charge foreign currency fees before you travel. However, avoid using your credit card to withdraw cash from ATMs. This is a cash advance, and you will be charged fees and interest immediately. PRO: By using a credit card for most expenses, you can carry less cash. You can also dispute erroneous transactions. And, many credit cards offer points or rewards. CON: Many, if not most credit cards have hidden surcharges for foreign exchange transactions. Look for cards that are travel-friendly. PRO TIP: The Chase Mileage Explorer Card (for United frequent fliers) and the Chase Sapphire card have no international transaction fees. TRAVELER'S CHECKS AND MONEY CARDS While mostly obsolete, traveler's checks provide more security than cash because they can be replaced if lost or stolen. These days, Visa and Travelex offer travel cards that are prepaid like traveler's checks, but work like debit cards for purchases and ATM withdrawals. CON: The exchange rate for traveler's checks is not as favorable as the interbank rate you get when using a credit or debit card, and very few merchants accept them for purchase these days. You'll incur commissions, shipping charges and/or conversion fees to purchase AND cash the checks. The prepaid cards have plenty of fees, too--activations fees, reloading fees, ATM charges, and even inactivity fees. In most cases you're better off using your own debit card. Then it's a matter of going through it to find the unit. Though I'm unsure if all units will respond in the console. You then need to type out the command, setting a spawn unit for them. Which ideally should be in a city. And so the example would be: create_unit "Rome" "roman hastati" 5 9 3 3 Keep note, that anything in quotations doesn't need an underscore if there is a space between them. but you can try the command with the underscore if it doesn't work from a failure to recognize the unit. The numbers following the unit id, are the stats you are spawning them with. The first number being the amount of units you wish to spawn. 9 experience being the maximum experience (3 bronze chevrons, 3 silver chevrons, and 3 gold chevrons). And the last 2 numbers representing the Weapon and Armour quality, as Bronze, Silver and Gold. 1 2 and 3 Unit names are Case Sensitives, so do not use capital letters. And you can also spawn units directly into a generals ranks. But general names are more complicated to type into the command console, so use only when you see it fit.

Rome Campo de' Fiori (flower square) money exchange scheme

00:13
Experienced money exchange fraud in Rome. This stand on a busy tourist site snatched cash before discussing the exchange fee and amounts from 2 groups of tourist group. When I and the other victim went to police station, the patrol police forced us to take the money and finish the transaction and the local police simply say "there's nothing can be done. This case happens on a daily basis." I would say Italy government needs to do something about this as it's dirty business brings shame to a beautiful city. Later on when we are standing by the stand to warn follow travelers, one lady from U.K. was saved then we were removed by the police. I asked the police why I can't tell people the truth that this exchange takes 17% transaction fee, the police said if they allow me to do so, no one would visit the business. Thus they would arrest us if we continuous standing there to warn Travelers. The stand manager also threatened to have mafias come to beat us up. We left afterwards. One Friend of mine laughed that the Originally offered 5% refund go to police pockets at this point. Tourists are too weak to protest thus formed the collaboration between corrupted police and dirty business. Note: the police is pushing away my camera and said no filming is allowed in this country

Brides for sale - Bulgaria's Roma marriage market | DW Documentary

26:11
The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men. But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media? _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Money Talks: Trump's Rome visit to boost bilateral ties with Italy

03:18
President Donald Trump's spiritual odyssey continues - he's visited Israel and Saudi Arabia - home to Judaism and Islam, and on Wednesday he visited the Vatican where he met Pope Francis the head of the Catholic Church. After a private conversation he was heard telling the Pope "Thank you, I won't forget what you said". Presumably the topic was spiritual but soon things became material and financial as Trump met Italy's president Sergio Mattarella. Italy's facing economic challenges with the EU's largest public debt after Greece and is expected to have the slowest growth of the bloc this year. Rush to exchange money in Abu Dhabi after British Pound falls - Daily Mail

01:15
Greedy currency firms are cashing in on uncertainty following the Brexit vote and are exploiting holidaymakers by offering less than a euro per pound, a Daily Mail investigation has found. Last night furious MPs criticised 'rip-off merchants' for taking advantage of the public's lack of financial knowledge to offer rock-bottom exchange rates. Following the EU vote, sterling fell 10 per cent against the euro – and to a 31-year low against the dollar. On the night of the referendum – June 23 – £1 was worth 1.31 euros or $1.50.After the result, rates tumbled to 1.22 euros and $1.34 per pound. And the market rate for sterling has since fallen to around 1.173 euros (shown on the map, top) and $1.30. Moneycorp last night said it had not increased its margins and rates differ between online and airports. Travelex (bottom) said its rates took into consideration 'volatility in the market'. Forum boarium, porch of the money changers, Rome, Italy.

02:23
I mispronounce the name in the video, it is forum boarium, originally bovarium, being a livestock meat market from the days of the Republic. Today the arch is called by Italians the Arco di Giano, or arch of John, though he probably never went there. I don't know the name of the basilica that is attached to the porch of the money changers. Across from this is an ancient entrance to the Cloaca Maxima, Rome's original sewer system.

When in Rome...you vlog! We got there the first day super tired as usual. We planned on taking an hour long nap which turned into a 3 hour slumber. Got up and we were craving some Italian food. Found a a good pizza spot and munched on some zaa. We walked around a little bit and before starting to crave more Italian food. Ate pasta in the back like I'm in the mafia. The next day we got started off the day late and wandering around. Found that huge building thing and then walked to the colosseum. Wish we could have gone inside and watched a gladiator fight but oh well. Then we went to get more Italian food. More pizza yaaayy!! The pizza was great but there was a lot of cheese that Dan and I both struggled to digest later that night lol. Ended up doing a pub crawl that night... The next day was pretty rough but we headed to a soccer game in the evening between the two Rome teams. Really cool environment but nothing compared to a hockey game...sorry soccer fans :) Next day we went to Vatican City to repent for the sins we have committed on this 4 month exchange. We waited in line for a while before actually getting in so Dan went to grab some pasta to-go while I held our spot in line. The BEST decision of this whole trip hands down. I had actually been to Vatican City with my family a while ago but we never went up to the top in the dome. So...when in Rome. Dan and I climbed over 500 steps to get to the top for probably the best view of Rome. The next day we were pretty ready to head home so didn't vlog for another day and just ended the vlog there lol. My name is Connie and I'm one of the interns for The Roman Guy this semester. This is going to be one of the first of a series of Roma How to Study Abroad Edition. Packing is one of the most hardest, yet one of the most important steps before starting your journey abroad. I spent over a week deciding what to bring and what not to bring. In this video, I'll show you some of the necessities you'll need while you're here, and some of the tips I learned while traveling abroad. First things first. Check the weather. I'm studying abroad from January until May and the weather here is actually colder than it is in Southern California. Make sure you know what the weather will be like during your stay. Shoes are also super important. Make sure they're weather-appropriate. These rain boots would definitely handy during those rainy days. Bring comfortable shoes for when you're going out. These are a must, comfortable tennis shoes. We do a lot of walking here in Rome so these are my go-to shoes. Dividers, so they're easy to pack and easy to store when you move in. You can save space in your suitcase by rolling up your shirts. Also, bring your own towel and sheets so you have an extra when you travel. Here are some things that you might've forgotten to pack. Ziploc bags because I'm a huge snacker. Bring American products that you know you can't live without. Okay, the hard part. Fitting everything in a 50-pound luggage for three to five months you're studying abroad. Limit your selection by thinking about the different outfits you'll wear. If you can imagine yourself wearing the item of clothing at least three different times, you're good. You're also allowed a carry on suitcase. Since there's no weight limit on these, put your heaviest items and remember these quick tips. For your backpack, make sure it's big enough so you can stuff it all the way to the brim for your weekend getaways. Put your electronics, traveling size bottles, money bag, fuzzy socks for your long plane ride, reusable water bottle, neck pillow, adapter, earphones, umbrella just in case it rains, and most importantly, your boarding pass and your passport. That's it. Hope you learned a lot from this video and make sure you comment below if you have any other questions, if you're preparing your studying abroad, or if you want to share your own personal hints. Also, check out my blog on the link below to check out my own personal experience while I'm here. Tune in for our next episode on Baking While Abroad. Ciao.

The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It?: Crash Course World History #10

12:26
In which John Green explores exactly when Rome went from being the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Here's a hint: it had something to do with Julius Caesar, but maybe less than you think. Find out how Caesar came to rule the empire, what led to him getting stabbed 23 times on the floor of the senate, and what happened in the scramble for power after his assassination. John covers Rome's transition from city-state to dominant force in the Mediterranean in less than 12 minutes. Well, Rome's expansion took hundreds of years, he just explains it in under 12 minutes. The senate, the people, Rome, the caesarian section, the Julian calendar and our old friend Pompey all make appearances, but NOT the Caesar Salad, as Julius had nothing to do with it. "Money and Sustainability - the Missing Link" PRESENTATION BY BERNARD LIETAER

36:55
Launch of the new Report from the EU Chapter of the Club of Rome: "Money and Sustainability: the Missing Link" BOOK PRESENTATION OF BERNARD LIETAER, AUTHIOR OF "MONEY AND SUSTAINABILITY -- THE MISSING LINK" FIND OUT MORE: http://www.clubofrome.org/?p=4478 WATCH PART I, INTROCUCTORY REMARKS OF IAN JOHSNON, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE CLUB OF ROME: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpEvMf4AqYw WATCH PART II: http://youtu.be/qN-qPGqLLYM (Brussels, 31 May, 2012) Bernard Lietaer, author, financial expert, and co-designer of the ECU (the monetary mechanism that later became the euro) yesterday presented compelling arguments to show that there is a structural flaw in the current monetary system that generates all the current problems and repeated financial and monetary crises, including the eurozone crisis. It is also ecologically unsustainable as it encourages climate change and over-consumption. Mr Lietaer's presented his arguments during a lecture, hosted by the Club of Rome's EU Chapter in Brussels, to launch the Report from Club of Rome: Money and Sustainability: the Missing Link Current monetary system is inherently unstable and destructive The Report acknowledges that money has ignited an explosion of entrepreneurial and scientific innovation, but says it is structurally unstable and that current problems cannot be solved by simply tinkering with the system. "It would be naïve to think that innovations are magic bullets to solve all our problems. We can no longer afford to overlook new currencies that could promote sustainability", said Bernard Lietaer. The Report describes how between 1970 and 2010, there were 145 banking crises, 208 monetary crises, and 72 sovereign debt crises -- in other words a total of 425 systemic crises -- an average of more than ten each year. The current Greek crisis is simply the last in a long line. Mark Dubrulle, President of the EU Chapter, which organised the lecture said "Almost everything is for sale in most EU countries. Austerity is imposed at all levels... We hope the book will inspire many a decision maker and opinion leader to change course." The solution: the creation of complementary currency systems The Report says monetary instability could be solved by creating complementary cooperative currency systems (generically called the 'Civic') to work in parallel with conventional bank-debt money, counterbalancing its negative effects. It outlines eight examples of cooperative currency systems that can address issues such as healthcare, education, climate change, and employment. Bernard Lietaer and his co-authors also suggest a solution to the current Greek/Eurozone crisis based on Greece creating complementary urban or regional electronic currencies to run parallel to the euro which the country would retain for international business. The civic/euro exchange rate would be determined in the online market. Interestingly, this week Deutsche Bank proposed a very similar solution -- the creation of the 'Geuro', a complementary Greek currency to help it restore an internal competitive economy.

West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads. All my memories gather round her, miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Clifford Ando | The Long Defeat: The Fall of the Roman Empire

59:05
Clifford Ando, David B. and Clara E. Stern Professor; Professor of Classics, University of Chicago speaks at third lecture in our four-part series: Why Did Civilizations Collapse: Internal Decay or External Forces? The Long Defeat: The Fall of the Roman Empire in East and West. The Roman Empire remains one of the world's longest lived polities. Its collapse has therefore endured as a great historical puzzle. Was it barbarians or internal decay? Or was Christianity to blame? The lecture will explore a range of theories and consider in detail why the two famous theories, those of St. Augustine and Edward Gibbon, have found so little favor. Free and open to public thanks to the generous support of Oriental Institute Members and Archaeological Institute of America. Italy sticks to budget plans despite EU warning | Money Talks

06:29
Italy is refusing to budge from its big-spending budget plans, telling the EU a sharp increase in public spending would not threaten the bloc's financial stability. Brussels has lashed-out at Rome, calling its spending measures 'unprecedented', but Italy's populist government says it needs to restart growth in the eurozone's third-largest economy after a decade of stagnation. All eyes are now on Brussels to see how the EU will respond, as Laila Humairah reports. For more on this, we speak to Giovanni Ferri, an economics professor at LUMSA University in Rome. #Italy #EU

10 Smart Tricks to Avoid Pickpockets

10:16
How to Protect Yourself from Pickpockets. Even if you’re super careful and attentive, you’re still not 100% protected from pickpocketing. If you don’t want to lose your money and save yourself from falling victim of pickpockets, pay attention to some simple but important tips that can help you save your money and other valuables. The most popular pickpocketing schemes: "Sandwiching" their victim 3:12 Criminal #1 forces the victim to stop suddenly. They might ask for directions or drop a bag full of groceries, spilling the contents everywhere. Most people will stop to help someone in need. Meanwhile, criminal #2 goes in for the attack. He “accidentally” bumps into the victim, apologizes profusely, and walks away with a stolen wallet. Pretending to have been robbed 4:25 Sometimes in a crowded place, you might hear a person scream, "Somebody’s stolen my wallet!". Of course, after this, everybody usually starts checking if their valuables are safe. They pat their pockets or open their bags and peek inside. What they don't realize is that this is just a trick to help pickpockets determine with 100% precision where everybody keeps their money. Using kids 5:00 Pickpockets will use any means necessary to distract you, and they eagerly involve children in their criminal schemes. For instance, they send a cute little kid to distract you by showing you their drawing or toy while an adult member of the crooked crew (or even another child) sneaks up on you from behind. How to protect yourself from pickpockets 7:19 First of all, make it hard for criminals to get to your belongings. Avoid big crowds. Don't constantly touch your bag or your pocket where you keep your wallet or money. Never ever count your money in public! If you carry a purse, shorten the strap. If you go to a place notorious for pickpocketing incidents, it may be a good idea to prepare a fake wallet. If you travel with a backpack, wear it the other way around, on your front. Music: Argentina_Tango_Bandonian https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Common myths about pickpocketing 0:43 Top-choice places to rob people 2:30 Popular pickpocketing schemes: "Sandwiching" their victim 3:12 Fake drowning 3:58 Pretending to have been robbed 4:25 Using kids 5:00 A fight 5:32 Singling tourists out 5:58 Cities with high levels of pickpocketing 6:48 How to protect yourself from pickpockets 7:19 SUMMARY -Most common pickpocketing myths are believing that you’d surely feel someone putting their hand in your bag or pocket, hoping for safety of your inner pockets, and claiming that you avoid crowds and thus will stay safe. -Pickpockets operate at museums, beaches, open markets, restaurants, train stations and airports and in public transport. -One criminal asks the victim to stop and help them while the second one bumps into him and steals the wallet. -The victim rushes to save the “inexperienced swimmer” while their belongings are stolen from the beach. -While you check your pockets after someone “has been robbed” the pickpockets find out exactly where you’re hiding your valuables. -They send a cute little kid to distract you while adult criminals rob you. -Fake fights draw crowds that are a perfect place for collecting wallets. -Criminals eagerly go for tourists, so stay alert. -Hanoi, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, and Paris are top 5 cities, which are notorious for high levels of pickpocketing. -Don't keep your wallet in your back pocket or in a bag that doesn’t close entirely. Avoid big crowds. Never ever count your money in public. When you go out, take only the bare minimum.
