SEBI enacted SEBI (foreign portfolio investors) regulations 2014 and created a new class of foreign portfolio investors in India. The new class combines the existing Foreign Institutional Investors as well as Qualified Foreign Investors. The FPI Regulations provides for a simplified and uniform entry norms and registration process for FPIs. These regulations also provide the periodic end of FII and QFI regimes. This presentation covers certain basic aspects of foreign investments in India as well as some important regulatory provisions in this regard.

12/10/2018 Webcast: The 2019 economic and market outlook Vanguard Global Chief Economist Joe Davis shares what his team projects as a realistic return over the next decade for a balanced portfolio—meaning one comprising 60% equities and 40% fixed income investments—which at 4 to 4.5% is below historical averages. As he explains, the Vanguard Economic and Market Outlook for 2019 anticipates some variance in performance in U.S. versus non-U.S. markets, as well as fixed income vs. equities—underscoring the importance of periodic rebalancing and maintaining a diversified portfolio. IMPORTANT INFORMATION All investing is subject to risk, including the possible loss of the money you invest. There is no guarantee that any particular asset allocation or mix of funds will meet your investment objectives or provide you with a given level of income. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Investments in bonds are subject to interest rate, credit, and inflation risk. Investments in stocks or bonds issued by non-U.S. companies are subject to risks including country/regional risk and currency risk. These risks are especially high in emerging markets. IMPORTANT: The projections and other information generated by the Vanguard Capital Markets Model® (VCMM) regarding the likelihood of various investment outcomes are hypothetical in nature, do not reflect actual investment results, and are not guarantees of future results. VCMM results will vary with each use and over time. The VCMM projections are based on a statistical analysis of historical data. Future returns may behave differently from the historical patterns captured in the VCMM. More important, the VCMM may be underestimating extreme negative scenarios unobserved in the historical period on which the model estimation is based. The Vanguard Capital Markets Model is a proprietary financial simulation tool developed and maintained by Vanguard’s primary investment research and advice teams. The model forecasts distributions of future returns for a wide array of broad asset classes. Those asset classes include U.S. and international equity markets, several maturities of the U.S. Treasury and corporate fixed income markets, international fixed income markets, U.S. money markets, commodities, and certain alternative investment strategies. The theoretical and empirical foundation for the Vanguard Capital Markets Model is that the returns of various asset classes reflect the compensation investors require for bearing different types of systematic risk (beta). At the core of the model are estimates of the dynamic statistical relationship between risk factors and asset returns, obtained from statistical analysis based on available monthly financial and economic data from as early as 1960. Using a system of estimated equations, the model then applies a Monte Carlo simulation method to project the estimated interrelationships among risk factors and asset classes as well as uncertainty and randomness over time. The model generates a large set of simulated outcomes for each asset class over several time horizons. Forecasts are obtained by computing measures of central tendency in these simulations. Results produced by the tool will vary with each use and over time. Recent data from the Nigerian Stock Exchange has revealed that Foreign investors pulled out a total of N605.54bn from the Nigerian stock market from January to November 2018. This is significantly higher when compared to the N402.26bn withdrawn in the same period of 2017. It also showed that foreign inflows into the market fell to N553.48bn in the nine-month period from N598.82bn in 2017. Foreign portfolio investment outflow comprised of liquidation of portfolio investments through the stock market, and FPI inflow includes purchase transactions on the NSE equities only. During the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Robert Asogwa noted that capital inflows had declined consistently, especially since 2018, while outflows had increased, thus making external financing more challenging in the country.

The latest UNCTAD Global Investment Trends Monitor reported that global FDI flows fell for three consecutive years in 2018. Data shows that global FDI fell by nearly a fifth to 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars from about 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars last year. The drop brings FDI flows back to the low point reached after the global financial crisis. Data shows that the decline concentrated in developed countries where inflows fell by as much as 40 percent. Meanwhile, developing economies’ FDI flows have been more resilient with a 3 percent increase in 2018. Director of UNCTAD's Investment Division said the outlook is more positive for 2019 with a rebound expected due to stabilization in Asian countries. Asset allocation is the exercise of determining how much of each asset class you should hold in your portfolio. In general, the asset classes that we have to choose from are stocks, bonds, real estate investment trusts, and alternatives. Those categories can be broken down further, but I will leave it there for now. Except in hindsight, there is no optimal asset allocation. The best that we can do is take guidance from the academic literature. Russell Clark of Horseman Capital has been building a short thesis on US shale oil and semiconductor stocks. He thinks that the decline in shale sand efficiency will be a force that drives the oil price higher and put downward pressure on the USD as future foreign investment diverts away from the US to alternative international opportunities. I think they give something to people that's more interesting and they act very differently to the market. I find the States, contrary to market positioning and recent performance, I find the US very, very troubling and very, very, very problematic. This idea of unstoppable bull market in dollars is actually not true. The shale industry doesn't keep oil prices suppressed. It's actually, I think, about to become something that actually keeps prices high. Hello, I'm Roger from Real Vision. And, today, we're going to interview Russell Clark of Horseman Capital. Many of you may recall we interviewed Russell just over a year ago. Raoul spent some time with him and they discussed a whole range of topics. And it was an interview that was probably one of the ones I enjoyed most from last year covering shale, covering portfolio construction, and what it was like to be a short-seller. So we're here today to catch up on his thoughts, to see where he is on, hopefully, things like shale, see what else he's looking at. What are the main kind of drivers of his thought process at the moment and maybe get a little bit more on how he builds is his portfolios and how he looks at the world. So I'm very excited to be here. I'm looking forward to this interview. And, hopefully, we'll get a lot out of it on those fronts. Russell, welcome back to Real Vision. Thanks for having me. I think it was Summer of 2017 you were last on. And you covered a lot of topics in quite a lot of detail. It was a fascinating interview. There was a couple of pieces of unfinished business which hopefully we'll touch upon later. One of things that resonated with me and with a lot of subscribers was you talked about matching the macro with the micro. I was just wondering, maybe just sort of filling in over the last 18 months, where do you see the macro today and how do you manage the transition in macro over that period? Yeah, it's true. I think when I was talking last time, the area I was starting to really look into was US shale where you have a big disconnect between valuations and cash flow. And what's very typical for me is that you look at something, you build a couple of spreadsheets, doesn't quite fit together, so you leave it you go do something else and you come back and look at it again. And, slowly, you start to build up an idea of how that industry works and how it could go wrong or might go wrong or how it might get better and what you should be doing with it. And it sort of feels-- I think now with having looked at it but also seeing some more data points come out-- it sort of makes a lot more sense to me. It's one of those areas, when you look at it, it's funny how different people from different angles see it completely different. And I've sort of gone to a level where I think I understand why people are like that. I'm happy to talk about more if you'd like.

Imagine a world without borders -- where FII is equal to NRI is equal to FVCI and they all are QFI! And the only discrimination is between Portfolio and Non-Portfolio Investments. If Finance Minister P Chidambaram is to be believed, this dream could soon become a reality! After all, not one but two committees have been set up to map the mirage. One by SEBI under former Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to look at harmonising portfolio investment routes and another by the Finance Ministry under current Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram to define what distinguishes FDI from FII! Imagine that! A single portfolio investment route and a clear distinction between FDI and Portfolio Investments! Can it be done? Should it be done? Will it be done? To answer those questions, Menaka Doshi talks to Pratibha Jain of Nishith Desai Associates, Ajay Vaidya Of Kotak and Vivek Mehra of PwC, all experts in the confusing art of Foreign Investment Regulations.

Peter Kellner has been for over 25 years involved as an investor and thought leader in the sustainability and entrepreneurial spaces. Starting out in Venture Capital, he has been an investor and early adopter in FinTech and Data Science. Advised by Harvard's George Serafeim, Yale's Dan Esty, social entrepreneur and Ashoka founder Bill Drayton and a team led by MIT trained machine learning specialist Dr. Erik Allen, Kellner developed with his CIO Decio Nascimento a ESG Multi Asset Strategy which has vastly outperformed industry benchmarks (to the point of being positive in October and December 2018). Professor George Serafeim from Harvard Business School showed in his seminal study "First Evidence of Materiality" that companies that outperform in material ESG generate a 6% annualized alpha compared to companies that underperform in those factors. Proving academia right, Richmond Global Compass portfolio has been live since June 2017 and significantly outperformed the markets and was up +9.99% net in 2018 and up +21.37% since inception in mid-2017, as reported by Opalesque. (https://www.opalesque.com/671882/Richmond_Global_Compass_ends_2018_up188.html) The strategy is unique as it integrates ESG into a true multi asset portfolio and includes a global macro overlay which informs asset allocation, geography and sector, complemented by bottom-up fundamental analysis that informs individual security selection. The portfolio is managed by Decio Nascimento, CIO and former right hand of Luis Stuhlberger, “Brazil’s 15,000% Hedge-Fund Legend” (Bloomberg). Empiricism over Self Reporting The strategy focuses on applying material ESG indicators alongside fundamental research to increase alpha and mitigate risks. Machine Learning techniques are utilized to help identify material ESG metrics and improve the poor quality existing datasets. The materiality approach to ESG augments fundamental analysis by considering non-financial metrics that impact the bottom line and are often overlooked by analysts, bringing – for the first time – empiricism and measurability to ESG investing. This new Opalesque.TV BACKSTAGE video introduces Peter Kellner, his expert team and his groundbreaking strategy. He also talks about: * Living a purposeful life * How to use technology to address the shortcomings of today’s ESG indices in public and private markets * Portfolio construction in an ESG multi asset portfolio. The Compass Materiality Dashboard: A “stunning” breakthrough in ESG investing. Asymmetric trades * Demarcating Impact Investing versus ESG * Augmenting returns and social good with ESG. Taking on the global capital markets to affect change * Outlook: Integration of ESG into financial analysis will be normal * No capacity limits & no fear of crowding: Why ESG is “a gift” & why there’s no Alpha Decay in ESG. Peter Kellner founded Richmond Global Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in disruptive technologies globally. Mr. Kellner also co-founded Endeavor Global in 1996, an NGO with a 33-country network that aims to identify and cultivate the highest impacting entrepreneurs in the world. After university, as a Fulbright Scholar to Hungary, Mr. Kellner founded the Environmental Management & Law Association (EMLA), one of Central Europe’s most influential NGOs in environmental policy. This NGO was originally backed by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Today, it is backed by the European Union, Norway Grants, and others. Mr. Kellner is a director of several technology companies. He has invested and lived in five different continents over the past 20 years, seeding some of the largest platform technology companies from Brazil to China. Mr. Kellner is a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), Council on Foreign Relations, Pacific Council for International Policy, and International Institute for Strategic Studies. He has served on the board of Endeavor Global, Endeavor Chile, Endeavor Jordan, Endeavor Miami, and Endeavor Louisville, and is a trustee of the Allen-Stevenson School in New York. Mr. Kellner is also a Crown Fellow at The Aspen Institute, and Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum. Mr. Kellner received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Mr. Kellner lectured in Princeton’s Engineering Department on entrepreneurship for 13 years and provided the funding to create the University’s E-Lab for student entrepreneurship.

A two-day mutiny by soldiers in the country have done little to dent investors' faith that President Alassane Ouattara will retain control and push ahead with reforms. Dollar-bonds maturing in 2024, 2028 and 2032 - the main exposure point of foreign portfolio investors to the western African nation - have edged down less than a couple of cents across the curve. This is according to data from financial services Tradeweb. The swiftness with which the mutiny was quelled also reassured investors. To reaffirm his control, Ouattara dismissed the heads of the army, police and gendarmes on Monday. The country is seen as a rare African success story of recent years

Monte Carlo simulation in Excel typically makes use of add-in software for Excel like Palisades Decision Suite or Oracle's Crystal Ball, but we can do a reasonable job modeling Monte Carlo Simulation with Excel, using just Excel. Monte Carlo Simulation is one of the most highly used and important numerical techniques used in finance. A dynamic histogram can be added to further characterize a return profile. Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) latest data shows FDI in 2017-18 grew by only 3 per cent to USD 44.85 billion. India needs to act two-fold to arrest this slide. Firstly, by reviving domestic investments and then by improving ease of doing business in the country to attract foreign investors. An UNCTAD report, too, has recently stated that the foreign direct investment in India decreased to USD 40 billion in 2017 from USD 44 billion in 2016 fiscal. However, outflows from India, the main source of the FDI in South Asia, more than doubled to USD 11 billion, the report stated.
