In the last five decades, scholars associated with Harvard have been at the forefront of changes in the fields of Slavic and East European studies by opening new horizons, suggesting new topics, proposing novel approaches to the study of Ukrainian history, literature, and philology as well as neighboring fields in the humanities and social sciences. To celebrate this milestone, HURI will hold a two-day commemorative conference, “UKRAINE IN THE WORLD: Fifty Years of Ukrainian Studies at Harvard University,” in Cambridge on May 11-12, 2018. The conference is free and open to the public. HURI convenes the conference to honor the vision of the founders of Ukrainian studies at Harvard, especially professors Omeljan Pritsak and Ihor Sevcenko; the dedication of the members of the Ukrainian community, who made Ukrainian studies at Harvard possible though their generous donations; and the first generation of scholars and students associated with the Ukrainian Research Institute, who helped put Ukrainian studies on the map of American and world academia. In addition to discussions on the history of Ukrainian studies at Harvard, the conference will also devote a number of panels to discussing the current state and future direction of various fields within Ukrainian studies.

Russia pressed to free Ukraine sailors
(28 Dec 2018) The leaders of Germany and France are pressing Russia to release Ukrainian sailors captured over a month ago in time for the new year and Orthodox Christmas. In a joint statement on Friday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron also vowed to keep up pressure to implement a 2015 peace deal for eastern Ukraine. German government spokesperson Ulrike Demmer told journalists at a news briefing in Berlin on Friday that Germany is calling the "safe, free and unhindered passage of all ships" through the Kerch Strait that separates Crimea from mainland Russia and urged the "immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained Ukrainian sailors." The long-simmering conflict between Russia and Ukraine that started with Russia's annexation of Crimea escalated on November 25 when the Russian coast guard fired upon and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crews. SEREBROVA | SPRING SUMMER 2018 Full Fashion Show | Ukraine Fashion Week
SEREBROVA SPRING/SUMMER 2018 SEREBROVA is an exclusive, original clothing brand. Based on more than 20 years of experience in the fashion industry and academic foundations, the designer of the brand Alena Serebrova masterfully and unexpectedly combines historical styles, modern fabrics and a unique fantasy cut. The SEREBROVA SS/18 collection is a journey back to the Future. Clean, colourful, technologically perfect The future of a society built in the new intellectual and digital world on the humanistic principles of the value of a man as a person, his right to freedom, happiness, development and manifestation of his abilities. The idea of the collection is impressively shown with the help of a fresh mix of Steampunk and New Industrial styles. Adjusted and sophisticated experimental cut sculpture «sculpts» the silhouette with an emphasis on fantasy sleeves, wings and feminine waist. The colour scale of the collection is based on a harmonious combination of a complex «mixture» palette with unrefined, «clean» shades. Juicy geometric prints are combined with democratic denim and romantic feathers. The collection uses natural fabrics - denim, silk velour, cotton shorts, natural silk. The collection was created in collaboration with Helena RomanovaTM - the line of accessories developed specifically for the collection with links to retro-technological styles like Steampunk and Clockpunk. It includes headgear, goggles, headphones, earrings, necklaces, chokers, shoulder accessories, bracelets, belts and bags. Accessories are made of materials and elements that are classic for these styles: natural leather, brass, copper and steel parts, including clock parts, retro objects and chains. The collection of accessories is made in a natural colour scheme: shades of leather from dark brown to muted red, metal elements - mainly from «aged» bronze to polished yellow brass. In the design of accessories, the proprietary detail of Helena Romanova TM - stylized bird feathers from leather can be traced. Shoes brand Antonio Biaggi played an important role in creating images of the collection, perfectly complementing the creative intent of the designer. The musical accompaniment of the collection is an author’s composition on the Steampunk theme created specially by the frontman of PerSay band Dmitry Burkanov. PerSay is a young Ukrainian team working in the style of punk rock. Designer Aliona Serebrova has been holding the leading positions in the Ukrainian fashion industry for more than twenty years, is a prize-winner of numerous international festivals, a constant participant of the Ukrainian Fashion Week and other fashion shows around the world. www.serebrova.com WA: +380962377558
Understanding the Russian mindset
Support CaspianReport through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CaspianReport One of the very foundations of political science is the principle that geography determines destiny. In the same way that the British Isles determined the naval culture, and the frontier affected the American culture, Russia too, can be defined by its geographic characteristics. The most obvious element of Russia's geography is its enormous size. However, the truth is that Russia's size is both an advantage as well as a liability. The very core of the Russian Federation, the Moscow region, is simply indefensible. There are no mountainous ranges; no rivers or oceans, there are no swamps or deserts. Only the forests of Moscow and the inhospitable climate can be defined as geographic obstacles. The only thing the Russians can do in event of an invasion is to drag out the war and bleed the enemy out. It is for this reason that Russia's history is largely about surviving invasion after invasion. These centuries long experiences left a deep mark in the Russian culture and psychology, and due to these experiences the Russian leadership became obsessed with security and survival. Kuchmagate by Volodymyr Tsvil
28 November 2000 was the day when the foundations of a young and fragile Ukrainian democracy were fundamentally shaken. The national deputies and the entirety of the Ukrainian population became aware of the records made by the former officer of the State Security Service, Mykola Melnichenko, which implicated the then President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, in being involved in the murder of an independent journalist Georgiy Gongadze. The tape affair, or as it became known in the West, the 'Kuchmagate', was an unprecedented event in the history of modern Ukraine. Kuchmagate and the collapse of the Orange idea is a story told by Volodymyr Tsvil, a close associate of the main characters involved in the scandal, who himself was directly involved in the affair. Tsvil provides a unique insight into the events that followed immediately after the outbreak of the Kuchmagate and reveals a web of complex relationships between major Melnychenko and a plethora of politicians, journalists, governments and NGOs who were keen to obtain the contents of these records and use them for their own purposes. The story of Kuchmagate and the collapse of the Orange idea, however, is not merely a description of events which inspired the Orange revolution in 2004. Many Ukrainians entertained the hope that new people in the government could deliver their promises for a just and free society. These hopes were shattered by the same politicians' insincerity and personal interest in political expediency demonstrated during the Kuchmagate. The hopes of ordinary Ukrainians that justice would prevail were sidelined and largely forgotten. Today, the Orange coalition and its leaders are forgotten, marginalised or even imprisoned. In contrast, the Kuchmagate affair is alive and to the present day is far from being solved. The main question of who ordered the murder of Georgiy Gongadze remains unanswered. In order to find an answer to this and many other questions, more details about the Kuchmagate should be revealed to the public. Tsvil's book makes one the first contributions to this cause, providing first-hand information about the development of the scandal in a clear and objective manner. My lovely Kiev ❤❤❤❤
Kiev (Ukrainian: Київ - Kyiv, Russian: Киев - Kiev) is the capital and largest city of Ukraine with - officially - appr. 3 million inhabitants (unofficially up to 4 million inhabitants). The city was founded on the banks of Dnipro River (Ukrainian: Днiпро, Russian: Днепр / Dnieper). The transliteration of the city's name from Ukrainian is "Kyiv", and this variation is used in official English language materials in Ukraine. City's name spelling is a sensitive political topic for many Ukrainians, since outdated "Kiev" spelling is based on the Russian spelling and was prevalent during the Soviet occupation and therefore reminds of Russian influence over Ukraine. It's recommended to use Kyiv when in Ukraine not to hurt anybody's feeling. Same goes for using "Ukraine" instead of outdated "the Ukraine". Ukrainians are very proud of their capital's role in establishing European civilization in Eastern Europe. Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, dating back to the 5th century, although settlements at this location existed much earlier. By the late 9th century, Kyiv had become the de facto capital of an emerging Eastern Slavic state. Between the 10th and early 13th centuries, the city reached its golden age as the capital of the first Ukrainian state known today as Kyivan Rus, (Rus-Ukraine). This state created the religious and cultural foundations for modern Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. In the middle of the 13th century, Kyivan Rus was overrun by the Mongols. Later that century, Kyiv became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569 the city was absorbed into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and in 1654 it was liberated from that Commonwealth by the Cossack, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, who then promptly signed the city over to Russia. This action continues to be a sore point for Ukrainian nationalists. In 1775, Kyiv was annexed by the Russian Empire. The city remained under Russian rule, with brief but uncertain periods of independence between 1918 and 1920. Over these two centuries, Kyiv experienced growing Russification and Russian immigration. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became the capital of independent Ukraine and is now discovering its place as a large European capital. It is generally acknowledged that the population is over 3,000,000 (2006 estimates). About 85% claim Ukrainian ethnicity and about 12% Russian. However, the census numbers are believed to be unreliable so these percentages must be taken with a pinch of salt. There are many minorities in the city, including Armenians, Azeris, Belarussians, Jewish, Georgians, Polish, Romanians and Tatars. Since 2001, not only has the population of Kyiv increased, but also the percentage of people claiming Ukrainian ethnicity. This is probably a result of the strong nationalist movement centered in Kyiv during the Orange Revolution (October 2004 to January 2005). Officially, all signs are in Ukrainian only. Since 2011, signs with Latin transliteration have been installed in the city center. Although many people continue to speak Russian, even most of these are ethnically Ukrainian. Hearing Ukrainian on the streets is now increasingly common. Although many Russian language-learning programs offer trips to the city, the usefulness of these trips is decreasing as the Ukrainian language in now in resurgence and the main language of the city again, after having been rarely heard since the beginning of the 20th century when it was discouraged by occupying Russian authorities.

Death in Donetsk: Gladio C Subverts Peace in Ukraine
In the ninety-first edition of the Russian Newspapers Monitor, Professor Filip Kovacevic discusses front page articles from four Russian newspapers: Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Izvestia, Moskovsky Komsomolets, and Nezavisimaya Gazeta. Professor Kovacevic discusses the implications of the assassination of Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. In addition, he analyzes the issues surrounding the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline between Russia and Germany. Professor Kovacevic also examines the recent statements of the French president Emmanuel Macron and interprets their meaning for the current state of relations between Russia and the European Union in general. Lastly, he focuses on a social issue that has polarized the Russian society and negatively affected the popularity of the president Vladimir Putin - the issue of the so-called pension reform. Dr Subash Kak Keynote talk on 'Indian Foundations of Modern Science' at WAVES 2018 Dallas
Dr Subash Kak's Keynote speech on 'Indian Foundations of Modern Science' at WAVES Dallas, Texas - 2018. Event was held at Brookhaven College, Farmers Branch , Dallas, texas from August 2-5, 2018 More Details : http://www.wavesinternational.net/ DALLAS, August 9, 2018 (PressRelease.com) - The 13th international conference of the World Association for Vedic Studies (WAVES-2018) was successfully held Aug. 2-5 at the Brookhaven College, Dallas, Texas, centered on the theme of "Vedic Traditions for Education and Learning." The conference was inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Anupam Ray, Consul General of India, Houston, Texas, who spoke of the enduring relevance of Vedic knowledge in today’s world. Special guest attendee to the WAVES conference this year, Dr. Samhitashastri Arjunprasad Bastola, a Vedic scholar from Nepal, brought a message of good wishes from the president of Nepal, as well as an invitation to host the next edition of WAVES in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2020. Jeffrey Armstrong, also called Kavindra Rishi, founder of Vedic Academy of Sciences and Arts (VASA), Vancouver, Canada, presented inspiring opening remarks on the Vedic Civilization. Shri Sashi Kejriwal, president of WAVES, welcomed the attendees and dignitaries, noting that WAVES is in its 22nd year in existence, having started with its inaugural conference in the year 1996. The conference chair Dr. Narayanan Komerath, professor of aerospace engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Dr. Sashi Tiwari, former head of the Sanskrit department, University of Delhi, and president of WAVES-India, also the co-editor of the 2018 proceedings, worked diligently to bring out the Proceedings of WAVES-2018, ahead of schedule and released it on the opening day. Dr. Narayanan Komerath who has published over 400 papers in his academic career as an aerospace engineer, brought a considerable degree of rigor to the peer review process that selected more than 50 papers for presentation at the conference and represented a genuine advance over previous conferences. Attended by over 400 people, the conference consisted of keynote speeches, plenary lectures, panel discussions and presentation of research papers from around the world. This year’s WAVES conference featured keynote addresses by two recipients of the prestigious Padmabhushan Awards from the government of India: Dr. Ved Nanda, professor of law, University of Denver, Colorado, and Dr. David Frawley, founder and director, American Institute of Vedic Studies, New Mexico, USA. Dr. Ved Nanda traced the origins of the concept of Human Rights to the Vedas, while Dr. David Frawley, highlighted the study of mind and consciousness as India’s unique contribution to the world through its Vedic knowledge systems. Dr. John Hagelin, president of the Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa, in his keynote, spoke on the theme of how Vedic science fulfills the development of modern science, and drew parallels between the Vedic concepts of energy and consciousness as embodied in the Bhutas, Gunas and Doshas with the modern mathematically derived ideas of energy and particles such as bosons, gravitons and other quantum field and string field theories. In his keynote address, Dr. Subhash Kak, regents professor, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Oklahoma State University, spoke of the Indian foundations of modern science, and shared some of the frontiers of current explorations in Artificial Intelligence, speculating on whether and to what extent machines can produce or emulate human consciousness. In his keynote, Shri Rajiv Malhotra, founder and president of Infinity Foundation, Princeton, New Jersey, reflected on his own personal journey titled “journey towards infinity,” in disrupting the status quo in the academia, where western colonial and orientalist narratives about India and the Vedic Hindu civilization are recycled as authoritative knowledge about India. He also speculated on the way forward and the critical need to develop a school of thought that more authentically represented an Indic narrative about India’s traditions and knowledge systems. 60 Minutes Interview George Soros Tried to Ban - Atheist, Holocaust Criminal Conspiracy
Rumors have circulated since protests and riots broke out following the election of Donald Trump last week claiming billionaire globalist and notorious meddler George Soros is backing the anti-Trump movement in an attempt to further destabilize the nation. Although the links thus far have, indeed, circumstantially indicated Soros’ involvement, the connections haven’t been entirely clear — until now. While it’s certainly true Soros hasn’t forked over a personal check to any participants in these events — frankly, even suggesting that would be the case ignorantly ignores the larger issues at play — the association of organizations and groups his Open Society Foundations funding is not only evident, it should not be dismissed. When Soros-backed groups are entangled in the affairs of any nation, massive upheaval tends to follow — and not necessarily for the better. Whether or not you support the growing anti-Trump movement, a bit of background concerning this fact shows the need for apprehension — this isn’t a simple matter of influencing policies to fit a liberal ideology. Apart from involvement in Albania, Liberia, and many other nations, his tampering in the affairs of Ukraine not only remodeled its politics and economics, it ultimately fueled tensions with Russia, which recently reached a fever pitch. A thorough report in New Eastern Outlook on several hacked documents show “Soros is effectively the puppet-master pulling most of the strings in Kiev. Soros Foundation’s Ukraine branch, International Renaissance Foundation (IRF) has been involved in Ukraine since 1989. His IRF doled out more than $100 million to Ukrainian NGOs two years before the fall of the Soviet Union, creating the preconditions for Ukraine’s independence from Russia in 1991. Soros also admitted to financing the 2013-2014 Maidan Square protests that brought the current government into power. Matthew McCord was feeling pretty good about the $12,000 he had raised for his campaign for Henry County district attorney when he was blindsided by a September surprise. New York billionaire George Soros dumped $147,000 into Georgia Safety & Justice, an independent-expenditure committee registered on Aug. 26, aimed at defeating Mr. McCord and electing his opponent, Democrat Darius Pattillo. After recovering from the shock, Mr. McCord, a former prosecutor in Clayton and Newton counties, did what he thought was best for himself and the party: He dropped out of the race, allowing Mr. Pattillo to run unopposed. “It was horrible,” said Mr. McCord, a lawyer in private practice in McDonough. “They rented space, they had a staff, they were using a Washington, D.C.-based PR firm. So what I knew was they could say whatever they wanted to say about me. It didn’t matter if it was true, and I would have no way to respond.” He had already received a taste of things to come. “I’ve always been fairly centrist. I have a foundation that I started that has paid to send minority kids to school. And they [Soros campaigners] were already trying to paint me as a white racist,” he said. “It’s deplorable.” Mr. McCord wasn’t alone. In 2015 and 2016 Mr. Soros, a leading Black Lives Matter funder, sunk more than $7 million into at least 11 local prosecutorial races in 10 states in an effort to implement criminal justice reform from the inside.
