After Abrams Refuses to Concede, GA Dems Drop Bombshell Announcement
After the polls closed on Tuesday, Republican Brian Kemp took the lead with 1,975,806 votes. However, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams, who had 1,916,931 refused to concede, claiming that there were still uncounted ballots.
On Saturday, Georgia officials confirmed Abrams’ suspicion.
According to the Washington Examiner, Kemp won by a 58,875-votes margin, leaving libertarian Ted Metz with 37,149 votes.
The NBC reported that Georgia’s rules suggest that the Democratic candidate doesn’t need to surpass Kemp in votes in order to keep her campaign alive. If Kemp didn’t manage to reach 50 percent of the ballots cast, then a runoff between the two top candidates has to take place.
This is the reason behind the importance of the number of the uncounted ballots. Kemp’s campaign indicated that there are only 21,190 ballots to be counted, while Abrams’ campaign claimed that there were more- 26,846 uncounted ballots.
“We will continue to fight for each and every eligible vote to be counted because in a democracy, every vote should be valued. Georgians deserve nothing less,” said Lauren Groh-Wargo, Abrams’ campaign manager.
What makes things even more complicated is the fact that Kemp, as the Georgia’s secretary of state, had a responsibility to oversee the election. He left his post on Thursday, believing that he won the race, to start the transition to governor.
The Democratic party of Georgia filed a lawsuit regarding the vote counting procedures in Dougherty County.
Kurt Kastorf, part of the Abrams campaign’s legal team said: “We have reports of ballots never showing up, or being mis-delivered, and there was an incredible backlog. The county was continuing to send ballots at least as late as last week,” according to CNN.
The Kemp campaign claims that the uncounted votes won’t change the outcome of this election.
“Based on counts released by the Secretary of State’s office, Brian Kemp’s margin is so large that the number of provisional ballots and overseas ballots will not change his Election Day victory,” said the Kemp campaign’s press secretary, Cody Hall.
“Simply put, it is mathematically impossible for Stacey Abrams to win or force a run-off election,” he said.
The campaign went on to say that it’s time for Abrams to face reality and accept the loss.
According to The Hill, “Stacey Abrams’ antics are a disgrace to democracy and completely ignore the will of the people,” said Ryan Mahoney, the Kemp campaign’s communications director.
“This is not how America works. Brian Kemp earned a clear victory on Tuesday night and holds a sizable lead as remaining provisional and military ballots are counted,” he added.
