Human Population Through Time

06:25
It took 200,000 years for our human population to reach 1 billion—and only 200 years to reach 7 billion. But growth has begun slowing, as women have fewer babies on average. When will our global population peak? And how can we minimize our impact on Earth’s resources, even as we approach 11 billion? Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich

08:48
The reason why some countries are rich and others poor depends on many things, including the quality of their institutions, the culture they have, the natural resources they find and what latitude they're on. NOTE: Firstly, we know about and apologise for the incorrect map in this version of the video, there is an update version in the playlist with a corrected map. PLEASE HELP US UPDATE THIS VIDEO: We recognise that this video is now, in 2017, outdated. Please help us to create an update by supporting us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/therulesorg In the meantime, please find the updated information on our website here: http://blog.therules.org/update-global-inequality-video/. Thank you! SUPPORT US TO UPDATE THIS VIDEO: Our Global Inequality video has been viewed over 1 million times since it was first uploaded to Youtube in 2013. It has been used in classrooms, lecture halls, referenced in speeches, watched at home and has informed government and NGO policy. It's also incredibly out of date. We would like to raise US $2,000 to cover the cost of working with an animator from Ghana to create an updated version of the video. With continued support from the community we will go onto make more and more regular video content and online and offline mainstream culture hacking interventions to support the transition to a fairer, more beautiful post-capitalism world. If you've watched and appreciated the animation, we'd really appreciate your help in creating one that more accurately reflects an accurate picture of rampant inequality the world today. 42 Amazing Maps

03:44
The map, as an innovation, is extremely important. Simply constructing a useful representation of our world onto a piece of paper (or clay or vellum or whatever) vastly increased the capabilities of humankind. But we continue to add and alter this medium, in ways that allow for greater understanding of our world and even of ourselves. So in this video I talk about 42 maps that are really amazing. Resources that were very helpful included: http://www.reddit.com/r/mapporn http://www.worldmapper.org/index.html http://www.twitter.com/amazing_maps http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/maplab/ And this story is just AMAZING http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/09/jerry-gretzinger-map-ukrania/ Thanks to Katherine for being my research assistant on this one :-) ALL THE MAPS! Water Resources

11:38
005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Hurricane Sandy Public Resource Map

02:56
Hurricane Sandy Public Resource Map is a web resource for those affected by, or providing assistance during a crisis to locate themselves and find their way to emergency resources, using Hurricane Sandy as a case study. It was developed by Anne Harris, Katherine Meckler, Gregory Milbourne as a class project for Dynamic Cartographic Representation (Geog 461W), offered at Penn State Geography and taught by Dr. Alan MacEachren. Geog 461W projects focus on design and production of a dynamic, map-based, web-capable geospatial tool targeted to support some clearly articulated objectives. By mid-century there will likely be 9 billion people on the planet, consuming ever more resources and leading ever more technologically complex lives. What will our cities be like? How will we eat in the future of Earth? Will global warming trigger catastrophic changes, or will we be able to engineer our way out of the world climate crisis? In the future world demographic changes will certainly be dramatic. Rockefeller University mathematical biologist Joel Cohen says it's likely that by 2050 the majority of the people in the world and USA will live in urban areas of the earth, and will have a significantly higher average age than people today. Globalization I - The Upside: Crash Course World History #41

11:51
In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get into some of the less-positive side effects of globalization. Also, you should turn on the captions. What does China want? | The Economist

04:07
An animated infographic depicting China’s territorial disputes. Is China trying to expand its territory? Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 ONE reason China’s spectacular rise sometimes alarms its neighbours is that it is not a status quo power. From its inland, western borders to its eastern and southern seaboard, it claims territory it does not control. In the west, China’s border dispute with India is more than a minor cartographic tiff. China claims an area of India that is three times the size of Switzerland, the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Further west, China occupies Indian claimed territory next to Ladakh in Kashmir, an area called the Aksai Chin. China humiliated India in a brief, bloody war over the dispute in 1962. Since 1988, the two countries have put the dispute on the backburner and got on with developing commercial ties, despite occasional flare-ups. More immediately dangerous is the stand-off between China and Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in Chinese. Japan says they have always been its territory and admits no dispute, claiming also that China only started expressing an interest when it began to seem the area might be rich in oil and gas. A new and much more dangerous phase of the dispute began in 2012 after Japan’s government nationalised three of the islands by buying them from their private owner. China accused Japan of breaking an understanding not to change the islands’ status. Ever since, it has been challenging not just Japan’s claim to sovereignty over the islands, but its claim to control them, sending Chinese ships and planes to patrol them. Raising the stakes is Japan’s alliance with America, which says that though it takes no position on who owns the islands, they are covered by its defence treaty with Japan, since it administers them. Especially provocative to America and Japan was China’s unilateral announcement in November 2013 of an Air-defence Identification Zone, covering the islands. The worry is less that big powers will deliberately go to war over these desolate little rocks, but that an accidental collision at sea or in the air might escalate unforeseeably. Similar fears cloud disputes in the South China Sea, where the maritime claims in South-East Asia are even more complex, and, again, competition is made more intense by speculation about vast potential wealth in hydrocarbon resources. Vietnam was incensed in May 2014 when China moved a massive oil-rig to drill for two months in what it claimed as its waters. This was near the Paracel Islands, controlled by China since it evicted the former South Vietnamese from them in 1974. To the south, China and Vietnam also claim the Spratly archipelago, as does Taiwan, whose claim in the sea mirrors China’s. But the Philippines also has a substantial claim. Malaysia and even tiny Brunei also have an interest. But it is with Vietnam and the Philippines that China’s disputes are most active. The Philippines accuses China of salami-slicing tactics, stealthily expanding its presence in disputed waters. In 1995 it evicted the Philippines from Mischief Reef, and in 2012 from Scarborough Shoal. This year it has tried to stop the Philippines from resupplying a small garrison it maintains on the Second Thomas Shoal, and appears to be building an airstrip on the Johnson South Reef. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea—UNCLOS—is one forum for tackling these disputes. But UNCLOS cannot rule over territorial disputes, just over the waters habitable islands are entitled to. And China and Taiwan point to a map published in the 1940s, showing a big U-shaped nine-dashed line around the edge of the sea. That, they say, is historically all China’s. This has no basis in international law, and the Philippines, to China’s fury, is challenging it at an UNCLOS tribunal. In fact China often fails to clarify whether its claims are based on the nine-dashed line, or on claims to islands, rocks and shoals. That lack of clarity alarms not just its neighbours and rival claimants, but the United States, which says it has its own national interest in the freedom of navigation in a sea through which a huge chunk of global trade passes Also alarming is that if these arguments over tiny specks in the sea become so unmanageable, what hope is there for resolving the really big issues? And the biggest of all is the status of Taiwan, still seen by China as part of its territory, but in practice independent since 1949. For now, Taiwan and China have a thriving commercial relationship. But polls suggest that few in Taiwan hanker after unification with the mainland. And China’s rulers still insist that one day they will have to accept just that.

The Map of Chemistry

12:58
The entire field of chemistry summarised in 12mins from simple atoms to the molecules that keep you alive. This video was sponsored by The Great Courses Plus, start your free trial and help out this channel here http://ow.ly/crsQ30beNOZ If you would like to buy a poster of this map, they are available here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/26426671-the-map-of-chemistry I have also made a version available for educational use which you can find here: https://flic.kr/p/UBS4mf and a widescreen version: https://flic.kr/p/UNA1LW Errata and notes: 1. I got the Oxidising Agent and the Reducing Agent the wrong way around! Sodium is the Reducing agent and Chlorine is the Oxidising agent. My confusion was that when a sodium atom looses an electron it becomes oxidised, so in my simple brain, I called it the oxidising agent. That is wrong because the agent that oxidises the sodium is the chlorine atom and so the labels are the wrong way around. Doh! 2. I drew the hydrogen H2 molecule with a double bond but it should be a single bond because they are bonded with a single covalent bond. 3. Where I have drawn carbon dioxide, the carbon should have a double bond to each of the oxygens. 4. Apparently Feynman diagrams are not that useful for theoretical chemistry, so perhaps that wasn't the best choice for the illustration. The feedback in the comments from a real theoretical chemist is "All we deal with is shuffling around electrons, but many many many electrons, so a Feynman diagram would need to be huge but at the same time would be very very repetitive." 5. In analytical chemistry, I should have called it distillation rather than precipitation. 6. My definition of organic chemistry being about ‘life’ is not very good. I should have said that organic chemistry looks at compounds that contain carbon. But there are some compounds in inorganic chemistry that also contain carbon, like carbon dioxide so I guess I'd also have to state that inorganic chemistry is almost everything else. 7. I said that fuels are inorganic chemistry which is misleading when I drew a car next to it. My understanding is that there are inorganic fuels that don't contain carbon, but obviously all the fuels we are familiar with are organic. I thought a picture of a car would tie a few things together elegantly, but it ended up giving the wrong impression. That’s okay, I’m still learning! :D 8. In inorganic chemistry, I should have stated that all natural minerals fall under inorganic chemistry so as not to be misleading, otherwise you might go way thinking that only man-made substances fall under inorganic chemistry which is not true. I said that 'a lot of the inorganic compounds that are studied are man-made' meaning that the cutting edge of research is mostly man-made substances. 9. Apparently water is not the most inflammable substance. I thought it was so that is interesting. 10. In the bonding section, hydrogen bonding and van der waals forces are technically inter molecular forces. Mapping resources that matter: Paul Bauman at TEDxCanmore

17:08
Talk Overview 90% of geophysicists in the world explore for oil and gas. Another 5% explore for mineral resources. And another 4.9% teach and regulate the previous 95%. In today's world, fluctuating commodity prices and mountainous stockpiles of recycled metals tell us that we have too much oil, uranium, coal, and iron ore. Today and in the foreseeable future, what the world is drastically scarce of is clean water, clean soil, and a common cultural legacy. Those remaining less than 0.1% of geophysicists not accounted for, above, are dedicated to developing techniques to explore for potable water, mapping soil salinization, demining previously productive agricultural land, and delineating subsurface remains of culturally rich sites threatened by development. With examples from Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, we can see how these non-destructive subsurface investigation techniques can radically improve life not only on a local and regional scale, but even on a continent wide scale. And where we are not using these approaches, we can envision how the development of access to clean water, clean soil, and mankind's cultural legacies can be greatly improved. Speaker Profile Paul Bauman is the Technical Director of the Geophysics group at WorleyParsons, in Calgary, where he has been working since 1990. He is one of the world experts on near surface applications of borehole and surface geophysical methods as applied to investigations in water resources, archaeology, soil science, geotechnical engineering, subsurface contamination, and geohazard identification. Paul has a B.Sc.E. in Geological Engineering from Princeton University, a Minor in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton, and an M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo. Paul has published widely in peer reviewed journals, scientific volumes, and conference proceedings. He has presented geophysical papers at over 100 conferences in an extraordinarily wide range of disciplines including geophysics, soil science, hydrogeology, disaster relief, archaeology, water resource development, contaminant hydrogeology, mining, mine waste management, heavy oil, shallow gas, salt water intrusion, salt water intrusion, etc. He has been an invited speaker at many educational, professional, and government institutions including Princeton University, Boston University, California State, the University of Pennsylvania, the National Water Authority in Yemen, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Royal BC Museum, and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife. Aspects of his archaeogeophysical work have been the subject of a NOVA documentary (Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land), numerous radio and television interviews, a National Geographic movie entitled "Finding Atlantis," and numerous newspaper and magazine articles including in Time, National Geographic, and the Reader's Digest. Paul's work in the Cave of Letters and other sites is featured in the recently published popular books Secrets of the Cave of Letters: Rediscovering a Dead Sea Mystery; Digging Through the Bible: Modern Archaeology and the Ancient Bible; and Digging through History: Archaeology and Religion from Atlantis to the Holocaust. Ongoing archaeogeophysical projects include the subsurface imaging of a Roman bath house from the time of Jesus, located in Nazareth; the geophysical mapping of the ancient Phoenician harbour of Tel Akko, perhaps the first constructed harbour in the world; and the geophysical mapping of the destroyed and buried remains of a World War II Nazi extermination camp at Sobibor, Poland. A few water resource projects of note include the introduction of an entirely new approach to water exploration in Africa, which raised success rates in drilling from less than 20% to over 90% in Malawi; innovative and successful geophysical water exploration programs in Yemen which tapped previously unused aquifers in areas that had gone years without significant rainfall; and the secondment to UNICEF to assess the impact of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami to the water resources of Aceh Province in Indonesia, and to begin the redevelopment and rehabilitation of water supplies to the region -- besides being an experienced geophysicist and hydrogeologist, Paul speaks fluent Indonesian and Malay.

NASA | When Trees Fall, Landsat Maps Them

03:45
Twelve years of global deforestation, wildfires, windstorms, insect infestations and more are captured in a new set of forest disturbance maps created from billions of pixels acquired by the imager on the NASA-USGS Landsat 7 satellite. The maps are the first to measure forest loss and gain using a consistent method around the globe at high spatial resolution, allowing scientists to compare forest changes in different countries and to monitor annual deforestation. Since each pixel in a Landsat image represents a piece of land about the size of a baseball diamond, researchers can see enough detail to tell local, regional and global stories. Key to the project was collaboration with team members from Google Earth Engine, who reproduced in the Google Cloud the models developed at the University of Maryland for processing and characterizing the Landsat data. The computing required to generate these maps would have taken 15 years on a single desktop computer, but with cloud computing was performed in a few days. Since 1972, the Landsat program has played a critical role in monitoring, understanding and managing the resources needed to sustain human life such as food, water and forests. Landsat 8 launched Feb. 11, 2013, and is jointly managed by NASA and USGS to continue the 40-plus years of Earth observations. For 15 Years, GRACE Tracked Freshwater Movements Around the World

03:34
Between 2002 and 2016, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) tracked the movement of freshwater around the planet.
