I was watching a "motivational" video I stumbled across this morning and it featured a collage of clips from famous business people encouraging us not to give up, to keep going! All very clichéd... but valuable nonetheless. The trouble is I think many of us who operate outside the sweetspot struggle with this concept. What does it mean to "never give up" and is the a point which we can actually give up? I'm not so sure, because "don't give up" implies that there is a set criteria to keeping on. The truth is that no one can say what "giving up" actually is and only when we define it does it exist. So with that in mind, let's look at a scenario where a business is no longer functioning to an extent where it produces a profit and ask the question; Is Closing Down Your Business A Strategic Or Moral Decision? Is closing your business, and deciding to go in a new direction, providing different services for example, giving up? The answer is no, it's not. Is giving up your business and admitting it didn't work out this time, losing everything you had built and getting a job with an established company giving up? No it's not, not if you decide so. There's always another day, there's always another opportunity. As my 'oul mate Dick Branson said; "Opportunities are like buses, there's always another one on the way". There's always another way, and once you can believe in yourself, maybe lick your wounds for a while if you have to, you can come back and hit your goals. Despite operating in the emerging alternate energy car market (and rampant skepticism that electric cars could even compete), Tesla had an incredibly successful IPO in 2010 and continues to struggle to produce cars fast enough to meet demand. It seems amazing that they’ve been able to pull that off without marketing, but Elon Musk’s explanation for their success is simple: a relentless focus on making the highest-quality cars possible. The vast majority of Tesla’s budget (and about 70% of Musk’s time and energy as CEO) is devoted to research and development. Musk only spends 2 to 3% of his time talking to the press, with plans to cut it down to 1% so he can free up time for – you guessed it! – more focus on engineering and design. Marketing done right can be extremely powerful; I’m not saying it has no place in your business model. The vast majority of us don’t have Elon Musk-level capital to fund our businesses and get them off the ground. But if it comes down to a choice between more marketing for a mediocre product, or money money spent improving product quality, I’d choose quality every time. Quality outlasts trends and bids for brief attention. It leaves a lasting impression – one that turns customers into lifelong fans and the most effective marketers you could dream of. I have a picture in my head of a million business owners all frantically juggling multiple balls in the air, stress levels rising, mind scattered in so many different directions it's difficult to focus on any particular ball for a very long... Sound familiar? As small business owners, it's a familiar picture! We are accustomed to multi tasking in our lives and so we frequently transfer this approach over into our businesses as well. Not surprising, but is there a better way? There will always be gaps to close -- it's just not possible or desirable to be able to handle the myriad of tasks we face in our businesses with skill and, let's be honest, enthusiasm! So what should we do, especially when we are on a budget? Start with a SCOT analysis -- taking a look at your personal strengths, challenges, opportunities and any possible threats to your business well being. Then when you have identified the gaps that need attention, the next step is to prioritise them. What impact will closing each one have on your business in the short and long term? How important are these gaps to close relative to each other? You can make these decisions based on your vision and the heart and smart goals you have for your business. Then..... find the people who can help you! Ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues, from your mastermind buddies and more. Stretch your budget a little. Investing in the services of other people is really an investment in yourself as it frees you up to focus on the work that is in your sweet spot, that you, your business and your clients will benefit from the most. In my case this was putting up my hand and asking for help to polish a Press Release and to initiate and manage a Facebook ads campaign, both of which are a short term priority (to fill my upcoming Wholehearted Life Workshop taking place in Sydney on November 20th) and a long term priority, to raise my profile in the marketplace. Could I have closed these gaps myself? Probably. Would I have closed them as quickly and expertly and effectively as the experts I turned to? Absolutely not, They are working in their own sweet spot on these activities. And that leaves me with the time and space to work in mine -- content creation for the workshop! So, time to turn your attention to your own situation. Are you aware of gaps that need closing in your business? Can you open to the idea of investing in yourself by investing in others? Under the post I'd love to hear from you. Have you ever completed a personal or business SCOT analysis? Do you close the gaps you find by selectively outsourcing? Has this saved you time, money and stress? If we consider the bigger picture, closing the gaps, removing the pain, asking for help when we need it is exactly what makes the business world go around....
