Investment Attractiveness of Ukraine, KIEF 2017

01:51:56
The low labor, low-cost assets, the process of deregulation and the promotion of international capital flow did not lead to significant growth in the investment attractiveness of Ukraine. The investment cannot be compared even with the period before the revolution. On the other hand, international investment funds do not have enough information regarding other ways to invest in Ukraine. What are the barriers between the investor and Ukrainian companies? What points for investment growth are attractive to investors? How to attract investments in other sectors? Speakers: Francis Malige, Managing Director, Financial Institutions for the EBRD Jean-Jacques Soulacroup, Corporate Banker – EU Neighbouring Countries Department, EIB Julia Kovaliv, Head of the Office of the National Investment Council of Ukraine Vasyl Khmelnytsky, Initiator of the KIEF, Founder of UFuture Daniel Bilak, Director UkraineInvest and Chief Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Andrey Gorokhov, Chief Executive Officer of UMG Investments Moderated by Sergey Budkin, Investment Banker, Founding and Managing Partner of FinPoint Investment Advisors (Ukraine)

Investment in Ukraine: Ground floor opportunities exist, Brian Mefford

09:15
Remarks by H. Brian Mefford, Business and Political Consultant based in Kyiv, Ukraine, Washington, DC, USA, 21 November 2016 - One makes the most money when other investors are afraid to invest - 0:15 A number of investment funds are taking a long look at Ukraine. There is risk, but a number of them are investing - 0:38 Ukraine is experiencing a turnaround in growth, several ground floor opportunities. This is not like buying a McDonald's franchise in Canada - 1:15 If you want to invest in Ukraine: 1. Get a good business lawyer, 2. Coordinate with your Embassy, 3. Be sufficiently capitalized as there are significant opportunities - 2:01 High technology work force is a huge plus in Ukraine because of cheap labour costs of a highly educated work force. Agricultural products in Ukraine are second to none. Opportunities in steel, metallugy - 2:40 Privatizations in Ukraine. Odesa port facility. Five state-owned energy distribution companies will be sold in the $10-$30 million dollar range. Ban on Russian investment in some sectors - 3:50 Per IMF agreement, Ukraine must raise $600M in 2017 - 4:14 Where to invest $1M in Ukraine? Place in something boring: bricks, toilet paper, beets, etc. - 5:45 Continue with privatization of state owned enterprises. There are 3,000 SOEs: Over 80% of them (2,400+) lose money for the state - 6:10 Provide certain state guarantees for foreign investors. No special treatment, but some protection would be positive for business. Foreign investors should be respected, legal guarantees - 7:35 American and Spanish soybean farmers in Ukraine. Opportunities exist today that did not exist under Viktor Yanukovych Contact Brian Mefford at http://www.brianmefford.net This video was not sponsored. Video by UkeTube

Ukraine Apartment Tour in Kiev

08:27
Come join us for a Ukraine apartment tour in Kiev as we showcase our airbnb rental property that we stayed at for just over a week. Overall, our apartment in Kiev was spacious and the location was fantastic just off of Pushkinska Street nearby Taras Shevchenko Park (Парк ім. Тараса Шевченка). AirBNB Discount Code: https://www.airbnb.ca/c/abergner9?s=8 Our Apartment in Kiev: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17757878 We were nearby, in terms of short walking distance, many great restaurants, pubs, cafes, malls and grocery stores. It was just a short walk from the metro station and we felt safe and comfortable in our neighborhood. The apartment itself had huge ceilings and was very spacious but definitely had a faded 70s and 80s vibe in terms of the furniture, kitchen and bathroom. This we found kind of fascinating and since everything was functioning just fine it was actually kind of cool. What are we up to today? We are up to an apartment tour here in Kiev (Київ). Yeah. We're going to show you yeah our Ukrainian apartment that we've been staying in for just over a week. And it is right behind through that arch. Yeah, and we're on a beautiful street. Yeah, we really are. Like check out these buildings. It looks like it could be it looks like it could be in Paris or Buenos Aires. Like it is pretty amazing. Alright, so let's watch for traffic and lead the way. I'll follow you. Well, here is the building. Lots of construction happening as you can hear. This building is not quite as nice as the one that we just walked by. You can tell that is has got a bit of faded charm here. A little bit rundown on the outside but it is quite nice inside. We are only on the 2nd floor, which is a nice surprise. Okay, so time for the tour. We've just come in through the main door and first up is the bathroom. Is the bathroom. We may as well show you the bathroom. We've got a tub and a shower. You kind of have to climb into this tub. It is pretty high. More than what I am used to. Yeah, the shower is perfectly adequate. I wouldn't say it was my favorite part of this apartment. Like it did the job but um it was okay. It wasn't huge. And moving on to the rest. What have we got? Sink. Toilet. A washing machine which is always super exciting. That is mandatory. That is a must for us now in an AirBNB. We need to have a washing machine. The most exciting part for me is just the sheer size of this place. This is a big a nice big apartment. As you'll see. Tada. This is our living area. And we've got some lovely teal couches going on. Yeah. Bit of a retro vibe. Definitely a retro vibe. Maybe stuck in the 70s or 80s slightly. If you come this way we've got our kitchen. We have another table with some chairs and little stools. We have like our coffees and our little snacks here. So I do a bit of cooking here. I just made pasta but look at these pots. Oh yeah. They are like some heavy duty like old fashioned pots. And this kitchen also has like a super 70s 80s feel to it too. Yeah. Check out that. Check out the microwave. Green. Yeah, green. I think there is green color reminds me of vintage I don't know why. Yeah, I don't think this color is so popular anymore. A big fridge. The bedroom. Come in the bedroom. We had a really nice big bed. It was really comfy. final thoughts about this apartment here in Kiev (Київ). We really liked it. The location was fantastic. It was quite central. We were nearby like metro stations. We were nearby parks, restaurants, bars and cafes. Also the other really cool thing was the price. It was in the upper 20s like just under $30 US dollars. We really liked the city and we would have liked to stay in Kiev (Киев) a little bit longer. 1 week flew by. Bye. Danish Ambassador on Ukraine’s Anti-corruption Reform and Foreign Investment

32:57
There may still be a long way to go before Ukraine eradicates the systemic corruption that has long existed in the country, but according to the Danish Ambassador Ruben Madsen, there has been “remarkable progress” so far. The most promising step recently has been the long-awaited adoption of the law on a specialized anti-corruption court, which was passed on June 7. Madsen says that this is a “big result” for Ukraine. Nonetheless, corruption remains the biggest obstacle for attracting outside investment. “If Ukrainian businesses want to work with Western businesses, they have to clean up their own shop, because they'll not find anyone who wants to take the risk to deal with them,” Madsen told Hromadske. What’s more, Ukraine has to face the issue of corruption head-on and avoid the tendency of downplaying corruption to improve its image abroad. Madsen commented: “It's an obvious thing, but to have people say that corruption should not be exposed in Ukraine because it damages the image of Ukraine sounds like something from the moon.” When it comes to investment, Ukraine also has to contend with Russian aggression and the ongoing war in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. But, according to the Danish Ambassador, this issue is still secondary to the slow pace of reform. “There is a conflict there [in Donbas]. And of course it has a negative bearing. But for investors who know Ukraine, of course this is not stopping them as much as lack of rule of law,” Madsen stated. The Sunday Show: Bringing Ukraine’s Reforms to The Fore

38:51
What do international investors and governments expect from Ukraine? Are they really concerned about corruption and what does the Ukrainian government need to do to prove that their anti-corruption efforts are serious? After all, in a country where funds are lacking, it’s foreign direct investment, as opposed to loans, that should be pushing Ukraine’s economy forward. In this week’s special edition of the Sunday Show, we examine Ukraine’s reform progress ahead of the Ukraine Reform Conference, which this year will take place in Copenhagen on June 27. Foreign ministers, potential investors and politicians from EU, NATO and G-7 countries are expected to arrive in Danish capital for the conference, as well as Ukrainian officials, including Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman. This is Ukraine’s chance to both demonstrate what they have achieved, and find out what their international partners and investors expect from them. Hromadske sat down with Danish Ambassador to Ukraine Ruben Madsen ahead of the event to discuss Ukraine’s reform so far and what needs. We also spoke to Executive Director for the Center of Economic Strategy Hlib Vyshlinsky and Acting Ukrainian Minister of Finance Oksana Markarova in the studio about how they feel Ukraine’s reform efforts are going. Ukraine: Pioneering Green Energy

03:32
In Ukraine, for example, imported fossil fuels dominate the power market, leaving behind a heavy carbon footprint. Producing a unit of GDP here requires almost four times more energy than the EU average. To counteract this, the EBRD supports the country’s carbon offsetting through its Ukraine Sustainable Energy Lending Facility (USELF). It is a credit programme worth €140 million, available for small and medium-sized renewable energy projects ranging from hydro, wind, biomass and biogas to solar energy ventures. http://http://www.ebrd.com/english/pages/news/press/2014/140623.shtml
