Uzbekistan - Culture & Traditions

05:32
Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, once a crucial 'hub' on the Silk Road. This is the region's cradle of culture for more than two millennia, where cities like Samarkand and Bukhara evoke images of once great empires. Rulers like Genghis Khan and Timur, however ruthless their rule, seem to resonate in many corners of Uzbekistan. Before becoming part of the Russian empire in the 19th century, Uzbekistan was conquered by nomads who spoke Eastern Turkic languages, which is the foundation of today's Uzbek language. In the 20th century, Uzbekistan became part of the Soviet Union until it collapsed in the early 90s. Surprisingly, many people have managed to hold on to their traditional culture, despite the long Russian influence. Islam is still the main religion, and the vast majority of the population are Muslim. In 2013, I traveled across Uzbekistan, visiting places like Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, and the Fergana Valley. Despite the current political and economic situation in the country, the Uzbek people I met remained good spirited, and showed an incredible hospitality. The people of Uzbekistan are the main theme in this clip, at work, in restaurants, in busy bazaars, and other places. I used a traditional song to accompany the images. Korean project to aid Uzbekistan argiculture sector sees light

02:03
우즈벡에 심는 '농업 한류' Since 2009, Korea has been investing in Uzbekistan to help improve its agriculture sector. The project resulted in some notable progress recently, as the Central Asian country is seeing harvesting rate of some of its products go up. Cho Sung-min has the full story. Korea is seeing results from one of the many investment projects it's launched to help developing nations around the world. The Korea Project on International Agriculture, or KOPIA, which in charge of overseas project under the Rural Development Administration, says Korea's agricultural technology and methods have proved successful in Uzbekistan. Since establishing a center in Uzbekistan in 2009, KOPIA has been providing seeds for agricultural products, bringing in cutting-edge equipment, and teaching advanced harvesting methods to local farmers. The result? Vegetable yields have surged. KOPIA started providing high-quality potato seeds to local farmers in 2015, and since then, annual production of potatoes has risen nearly 15-percent. With their high yields, Korean potato seeds have reduced the nation's concerns about a possible potato shortage. Potatoes are a staple in Uzbekistan... as it consumes an average of 2-point-5 million tons of potatoes per year... three times the annual amount in Korea. Meanwhile, the introduction of Korean greenhouses has made farming more convenient and has allowed farms to thrive even during the harshest season of the year. Uzbek farmers say strawberry and tomato crops were successful over the winter. (Uzbek) "I recommend that farmers use Korean strawberry seeds because the quality of the fruit is good and they produce a lot." With its recent success in the agriculture industry, KOPIA is set to expand its aid program to help out Uzbekistan's livestock industry. The process has already begun, with Korea sending top quality animal feed to help in Uzbek cattle grow stronger. Cho Sung-min, Arirang news.

India, Uzbekistan to route their trade though Chabahar

05:01
India and Uzbekistan are set to route their trade through the Iranian port of Chabahar as part of New Delhi’s growing engagement with resource-rich Central Asia. Briefing the media on Saturday, Foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale said that during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the summit of the eight-nation Shanghai cooperation Organisation (SCO), the two leaders hoped to supplement their connectivity through the Chabahar port with the establishment of industrial parks and an investment zone in Uzbekistan. Uzbek Deputy PM coming to India Mr. Gokhale said that Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister would be visiting New Delhi shortly to work out details and prepare for Mr. Mirziyoyev’s visit to India later this year. India, Iran and Afghanistan have partnered the establishment of the International Transport and Transit Corridor, which can connect landlocked Central Asia and Afghanistan with the Chabahar port in the Arabian Sea. The Chabahar port is a short distance from Pakistan’s port of Gwadar, which has been developed by China. Modi-Rouhani ‘pull-aside’ meeting On Sunday Mr. Modi is expected hold a “pull-aside” meeting with Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iran — a country that has stepped its diplomatic engagement with the emerging economies of India, China and Russia, as well as the European Union (EU) to counter a slew of sanctions from the United States, which has walked out of the Iran nuclear deal. India is a large importer of Iranian oil, but hard currency payments are now likely to be impeded on account of the Trump administration’s unilateral move. On Saturday, Mr. Rouhani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the SCO. Iran’s Press TV quoted Mr. Rouhani as saying that Moscow plays a key role in salvaging the 2015 nuclear deal Tehran. “After the US unilateral and illegal exit, Moscow has an important role in the reinforcement of the JCPOA and fulfillment of the opposite sides’ commitments,” Mr. Rouhani said, referring to Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — the official name of the Iran nuclear deal. India keen on Central Asian ties Official sources say that India has gone the extra mile to engage with the four Central Asian Republics at the ongoing SCO summit, highlighting the critical importance of this resource rich region in shaping Eurasia. Mr. Modi on Saturday followed up his meeting with the Uzbek President with a 10 pm engagement with President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. “We wanted to convey the message to leaders of Central Asia that we value their partnership greatly, while expanding our engagement with China and Russia, within the SCO family,” and official source told The Hindu. Mr. Modi on Sunday also met Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Sooronbay Jeenbekov, the President of Kyrghyzstan, which is the next chair of the SCO. Growing thaw in India-China relations In talks between Mr. Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday, the two leaders agreed to move forward on a “capacity- building” project in Afghanistan, as a follow up to their decision taken during the Wuhan informal summit that New Delhi and Beijing should work together on an economic undertaking on Afghan soil. On the economic track, Mr. Xi proposed that the trade between the two countries should reach $100 billion by 2020. In view of India’s adverse balance of trade, the Chinese side agreed to import non-Basmati rice and sugar from India. Apart from agricultural products, Mr. Xi said that he would encourage Indian companies to export high quality pharmaceutical products to China. India to expand “financial cooperation” Mr. Modi expressed India’s readiness to expand “financial cooperation” with China by establishing a branch of Bank of China in Mumbai. The Prime Minster and Mr. Xi also agreed to substantiate their understanding reached in Wuhan to expand people-to-contacts by establishing a new mechanism that will look at strengthening soft-power exchanges between the two countries. Chinese President Starts Uzbekistan Visit in Historical City Bukhara

01:57
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the ancient city of Bukhara in central-southern Uzbekistan Tuesday, starting his state visit to the Central Asian country. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were greeted by Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoev and Governor of Bukhara Province Muhiddin Esanov at the airport. In a written speech delivered at the airport, Xi hailed the time-honored friendship between China and Uzbekistan, noting that the peoples of the two countries had jointly opened the great Silk Road more than 2,000 years ago. The two sides have carried out all-ranging cooperation within the framework of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, and have achieved fruitful results, Xi said. Xi said he is looking forward to exchanging views with Uzbek President Islam Karimov on elevating the two countries' relations and deepening mutually-beneficial cooperation in all areas, thus jointly drawing up the beautiful blueprint for the relations and building a community of shared interest and future. Xi added that he is also looking forward to attending the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on its 15th anniversary, to jointly look back at the history of the organization with other leaders, sum up the achievements of cooperation, carry forward the "Shanghai Spirit", and chart the course for the future of the organization. Bukhara is a city-museum with a history of more than 2,500 years. Located along the route of the ancient Silk Road, the city has long served as a center of trade, scholarship, culture and religion. UNESCO listed the Historic Center of Bukhara, which boasts numerous mosques, as a World Heritage Site in 1993. China and Uzbekistan established a strategic partnership in 2012, and leaders of the two countries have met on multiple occasions over recent years. In September 2013, Xi paid a state visit to Uzbekistan. China has been Uzbekistan's second largest trading partner and biggest source of investment for three years in a row. In cultural cooperation, Uzbekistan opened the first Confucius Institute in Central Asia in Tashkent in 2005, and a second such institute was established in 2014 in Samarkand, a historical city in southeastern Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is the third and final stop of Xi's three-nation tour, which has taken him to Serbia and Poland.
