Why Isn't Congo as Rich as Saudi Arabia? Massive Tax Evasion

04:38
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in natural resources, yet the average citizen lives on only 72 cents a day. The foreign mining companies are getting rich while the general population is living in poverty. Many Congolese citizens are diging through the dirt on their hands and knees in search their fair share of the countries natural minerals. While there are taxes on the mining companies who benefit from the countries resources it is proving difficult to actually collect the money that is owed. Vocativ spoke to one tax inspector who explained that tax evasion and government fraud is rampant throughout the mining industry. So it seems that until those benefiting from the countries natural wealth start paying their fare share, many average citizens will have to continue digging through the mud to get by. Welcome to Top10Archive! We live in a day and age where nuclear power is becoming a common need for daily life. In 2011, the Key World Energy Statistics found that 10% of the world's electricity was provided via nuclear power plants; but what, ultimately, fuels these plants to provide power? All across the globe, uranium mines gather the natural resource used as the basis of all nuclear power; and while many countries contribute to the mining of uranium, these 10 countries provide the highest amount per year, based on tonnes mined in 2013. Top 10 Highest Oil Producing Countries in the World 2017

04:06
Top 10 Oil Producing Countries in the World 2017 This is a list of countries by oil production, as compiled from the U.S. Energy Information Administration database for calendar year 2016, tabulating all countries on a comparable best-estimate basis. Compared with shorter-term data, the full-year figures are less prone to distortion from periodic maintenance shutdowns and other seasonal cycles. The volumes in the table represent crude oil and lease condensate, the hydrocarbon liquids collected at or near the wellhead. The volumes in the table do not include biofuel. They also do not include the increase in liquid volumes during oil refining ("refinery gain"), or liquids separated from natural gas in gas processing plants (natural gas liquids).[1] Under this definition, total world oil production in 2016 averaged 80,622,000 barrels per day. Approximately 68% came from the top ten countries, and an overlapping 44% came from the fourteen current OPEC members, highlighted with blue shading in the table below. For many years, the top three producers have been (alphabetically) Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Each of these countries experienced major production declines at different times in the past, but since 2014 all three have been producing near their peak rates of 9 to 11 million barrels per day. 1 Russia 10,551,497 2 Saudi Arabia (OPEC) 10,460,710 3 United States 8,875,817 4 Iraq (OPEC) 4,451,516 5 Iran (OPEC) 3,990,956 6 China 3,980,650 7 Canada 3,662,694 8 United Arab Emirates (OPEC) 3,106,077 9 Kuwait (OPEC) 2,923,825 10 Brazil 2,515,459 I hope you will like video, if you do hit that Like button and dont forget to Comment and Subscribe. While these factors are only a drop in the ocean regarding what makes a country economically successful, the poorest countries in the world get these factors all wrong. While the availability of natural resources is the foundation of an economically robust country, utilising the resources well is a whole other aspect. This is not civic education 101, so we will get straight to the point and list the countries yet to realise self-actualisation. Here are the top 10 poorest countries in the world as of 2018. 10. The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. Top 33 World's Largest Copper Producing Countries

07:33
Copper is one of the most used metal by man; it is an essential element for building construction, power generation and transmission, electronic product manufacturing, and the production of industrial machinery and transportation vehicles. There is no evidence that copper even can be absorbed through the skin. But if it were, this could actually lead to copper poisoning, which may actually be more likely than beneficial effects, that is why it is also s vital to the health of all living things (humans, plants, animals, and microorganisms). In humans, copper is essential to the proper functioning of organs and metabolic processes. The human body has complex homeostatic mechanisms which attempt to ensure a constant supply of available copper, while eliminating excess copper whenever this occurs. Unfortunately there is also a downside to the production of copper in many Third World countries where you find a widespread of fraud, negligence and abuse. Global Witness has documented that government officials in many of the world's most impoverished countries turn a blind eye on harsh labor conditions in the artisanal mines, the complete absence of safety precautions and the failure of both the government and companies to take responsibility for the health and safety of tens of thousands of artisanal miners. In many developing countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Republic of the Congo and some other Third and Second World countries minors you will usually find that governments of those countries do not place any value to the safety precautions of their safety precautions, this leads to huge risks of accidents and deaths in the mines and very often nothing gets investigated. Yes, the big influx of foreign firms or multinationals pouring into those countries presents opportunities for the political elite to enrich themselves. leaving their citizens in misery, but it is the mentality that needs to change, it is the paradigm of those societies that need to change; progress comes with a price. In much of the very impoverished countries there is a growing amount of resentment because the vast profits resulting from copper and any other metal flow out of their countries without them seeing any change in their financial situation. That is why natural resources can be a blessing and a curse to a developing country. Governments in those countries do not believe that universal rights are values that their societies can implement, unconsciously they are not interested in adopting any form of human rights. The largest natural gas reserves in the world are in Russia Globally, the country with the most natural gas reserves proven last year was 35 trillion cubic meters of Russia.   AA reporters have a total of 193.5 trillion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves in the world, according to a compilation made by the BP 2018 World Energy Statistics Outlook Report. In other words, the reserve is expected to hold the market for more than 52 years.   The largest natural gas reserves were in the 79.1 trillion cubic feet of the Middle East. The Middle East was followed by the Commonwealth of Independent States, including Russia and Turkmenistan, with 59.2 trillion cubic meters of reserves. The region with the least natural gas reserves was 3 trillion cubic meters of Europe.   Last year, the country with the most proven natural gas reserves in the world was identified as 35 trillion cubic feet of Russia. Iran, with its natural gas reserves of 33.2 trillion cubic meters, followed by 24.9 trillion cubic meters of Qatar.   LEADER IN THE PRODUCTION OF NATURAL GAS   In the global energy markets, the country producing the most natural gas last year was 734.5 billion cubic meters. Thus, last year 20 percent of the world's natural gas market was produced in the US.   This country was followed by Russia with 635.6 billion cubic meters. How natural gas could be a geopolitical game-changer in the Mideast

36:26
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN It's a discovery that could easily shake up the geopolitical order in the Middle East. Deep under the eastern Mediterranean lies the largest natural gas basin ever found on Europe's doorstep. But the gas fields often coincide with disputed borders between rival nations. Our reporter Marine Pradel investigated this lucrative resource, which everyone wants a piece of. The billions of cubic metres of natural gas discovered in recent years off Israel, Egypt and Cyprus form what is now called the "Levantine Basin", the largest natural gas reservoir within easy reach of Europe. The first major deposit, known as Tamar, was discovered in 2009 off the coast of Haifa, Israel, by a consortium made up of Noble Energy (US) and Delek-Avner (Israel). Other gas fields were later discovered in the same zone of the "Levantine Basin": Leviathan (Israel), Aphrodite (Cyprus), but most importantly Zohr, in 2015 off the coast of Egypt: the largest gas field ever discovered in the Mediterranean, larger than all the others combined. It was found by the Italian oil giant ENI, which has already started to exploit it and is aiming to start production by the end of 2017. Meanwhile, Israel, supported by its US ally, is drilling away, driven by a free-market and idealistic vision: exploiting the gas will oblige the countries of the region to co-operate as business partners, which will in turn create peace and stability. But the gas under the Mediterranean Sea may also carry within it the seeds of new conflicts. On the divided island of Cyprus, it threatens reunification efforts. In Lebanon, its location - straddling the disputed maritime boundary with Israel - boosts the belligerent rhetoric of the armed Hezbollah group. It is hoped the gas could be worth billions of dollars, and all eyes are on the highly coveted European gas market, which Russia would like to keep for itself. Speaking to FRANCE 24 in Washington, the US Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs summarised the situation. “All of a sudden, it’s not just a bunch of fishermen that care about those waters. Suddenly, there’s billions and billions of dollars”, he explained. The stakes are certainly high. In total, nearly 3,500 billion cubic metres of natural gas could lie under the eastern Mediterranean, according to a study by the US Geological Survey. From Egypt to Syria via Lebanon, Israel and Cyprus, our reporter investigated this precious resource, a double-edged sword that awakens old Cold War reflexes and could well upset the geopolitical order of an already unstable region. Are We Running Out of Resources?

04:08
Prof. Steve Horwitz addresses the common belief that the world is running out of natural resources. Instead, there are economic reasons why we will never run out of many resources. In a free market system, prices signal scarcity. So as a resource becomes more scarce, it becomes more expensive, which incentivizes people to use less of it and develop new alternatives, or to find new reserves of that resource that were previously unknown or unprofitable. We have seen throughout history that the human mind's ability to innovate, coupled with a free market economic system, is an unlimited resource that can overcome the limitations we perceive with natural resources. Natural gas production is at a high level in Pakistan. Estimated reserves are 885.3 billion cubic meters (as of January 2009). Gas fields are expected to last for another 20 years. The Sui gas field is the largest, accounting for 26% of Pakistan's gas production. Daily production is 19 million cubic meters a day. Under the barren mountains of Balochistan and the sands of Sindh, there are untouched oil and gas reserves. Coal reserves are estimated at 175 billion tons. This would equate to 618 billion barrels of crude oil. When compared to oil reserves his is more than twice the amount of the top four countries. If At KSA's current usage, the reserves would last more than 200 years

How much power does Saudi Arabia wield over global economy? | Counting the Cost

24:52
Up until Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's killing on October 2, the Saudis were on a charm offensive - building brand new megacities, investing in tech start-ups and letting women drive. The world's biggest oil exporter did everything it could to convince the world it was serious about change, and investor confidence was growing. This plan for the future was the brainchild of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who was feted as a reformer. But then Khashoggi was killed and now Saudi Arabia and its crown prince are facing international scrutiny. At an investment conference this week the crown prince rejected any idea his economic ambitions would be curtailed. But as things stand Saudi Arabia's greatest strength, oil, is also its greatest weakness. So, how seriously should the world take Saudi threats to curtail oil output and how much influence does it really have over the global economy? Saudi oil is "actually quite important, particularly in the short-run," according to Chris Garcia, CEO of Vicar Financial and former deputy director of the US Department of Commerce under US President Donald Trump. "This is why when we look at some of the potential retaliation tactics that the Saudis have threatened, we have to take them seriously." "The Saudis have significant assets. They hold probably the third-most natural resources with about $35 trillion worth of natural resources within their territory." "It's the short-run repercussions of the Saudis cutting [oil] output that would send shockwaves throughout the global economy, but I would say that's leverage that would diminish in the long run unless they diversify as the world continues to diversify itself from its energy resources," explains Garcia. Saudi and Silicon Valley From Riyadh to San Francisco, oil money from Saudi Arabia is being channelled into US-based tech start-ups, known as venture capital. From Saudi's point of view, these kinds of investments can hedge against a potential decline in the demand for oil in the future. That's because the start-ups are tipped as having long-term growth potential. Saudi's sovereign wealth fund is called the Public Investment Fund, which traditionally had a strategy of low-risk investments. But everything changed in 2016 when the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund invested $3.5bn in Uber, making it the largest single investment ever made in a privately-held company at the time. Since then, the kingdom became the largest investor in the $93bn SoftBank Vision Fund, which is the biggest fund ever raised in Silicon Valley. Led by Masayoshi Son, Japan-based Softbank has changed the landscape of venture capital according to some reports. Rival venture capital firms worry SoftBank could be pushing up valuations and pushing them out of the market But since Khashoggi's killing, questions about morals and ethics are being raised. As such, Saudi money could be viewed as a liability by start-ups and their customers. "Even as tech companies recoil from the Saudis on ethical grounds, it will be difficult, if not financially impossible, to unravel their Saudi ties," reports Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds. "A complex tangle of contracts, stock preferences and legal obligations tie companies' hands in such matters. Silicon Valley corporations face a dilemma: choosing between an ethical response to a shocking crime, and the abundant funding that makes the tech industry flourish." So, how much damage has the Khashoggi affair done to the attractiveness of Saudi money in the tech world? "It's difficult to say at the moment but the likelihood is it's going to have some notable impact on companies that will accept the Vision Fund money and other seeders and whether they'll continue to stay in the Vision Fund," explains Amir Anvarzadeh, from Asymmetric Advisors. As far as Saudi's contribution to the Vision Fund, "It's a big contributor, it's not so easy to find alternatives if they pull out - but I don't think Saudis will pull out. It's in their benefit to stay in it ... the Saudi government wants the Vision Fund to succeed." Deal or no deal? The Future Investment Initiative conference, which took place in Riyadh this week, was intended to show off Saudi Arabia's investment plans. A number of business and government figures pulled out of the conference amid global outrage over Khashoggi's death. But there were plenty of others who did attend. There were government delegations from China, Russia and African and Middle Eastern countries. The conference is bin Salman's brainchild, created to draw investment and diversification into an oil-dependent economy that needs to find new ways to provide millions of jobs and it's those opportunities that attendees couldn't ignore. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/

Community based sustainable use of natural resources in Vietnam

06:50
Tram Chim National Park is one of two wetland preservation areas in a richly biodiverse part of Vietnam called the Plain of Reeds. In an effort to balance the difficult work of conservation with the demands of poor communities in the surrounding areas that depend on the park's resources for their livelihoods, Tram Chim is working on innovative ways to involve the local people in the conservation process. Community based sustainable use of natural resources is one approach the Park has begun to explore. The park has been working with poor groups that demonstrate an interest in and commitment to resource conservation. The groups develop resource management plans that are reviewed and approved by park officials, granting the local people permission to enter the national park and gather sanctioned resources for their livelihoods. Since the inception of this system, park officials find their conservation and regulation work is much easier, and local people have greater incomes to provide more stability for their family. Villagers recognize the value of conserving resources today to ensure the abundance of resources will remain for future generations. This project has been implemented by the park in cooperation with World Wildlife Fund funded by Coca-Cola and permitted by Dong Thap Provincial People Committee between 2008-2001. This film was produced by Institute of Tropical Biology in collaboration with Tram Chim National Park, RECOFTC - The Center for People and Forests, and The University of East Anglia, with financial support from the British Economic and Social Research Council. Hawaii Gets Go-Ahead For World's Largest Telescope

01:09
This week Hawaii’s Board of Land and Natural Resources issued a permit to the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope, following years of arguments for and against its construction. The telescope will proceed with construction on the dormant volcano of Mauna Kea, Hawaii - but a coalition of opponents, led by Native Hawaiian activists who consider the mountaintop sacred ground, have already vowed to keep fighting. Researchers hope the next-generation telescope may bring understanding of distant corners of the universe, with a resolution more than ten times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. But opposition to the TMT, fueled by Hawaii’s long history of colonialism, came to a head in the spring of 2015, when protestors blocked construction, resulting in Hawaii’s Supreme Court nullifying the telescope’s permit. But in July of 2017, former judge Riki May Amano sent a recommendation to the Board of Land and Natural Resources, arguing that the telescope’s construction be allowed to move forward, and on Thursday, in a 5-2 vote, the land board decided to issue a new permit. https://earther.com/the-worlds-largest-telescope-will-be-built-in-hawaii-af-1818996458 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

How Israel developed the most technologically advanced military across the globe

How Israel developed the most technologically advanced military across the globe Unlike its Arab adversaries, Israel did not have natural resources to fund its economy. There was no oil or minerals. Nothing. The delegation held a couple of meetings but was mostly met with laughs. The Israelis were trying to sell oranges, kerosene stove tops and fake teeth, the New York Post reports. For countries like Argentina, which grew its own oranges and was connected to the electrical grid, the products were pretty useless. It’s hard to imagine this is what Israeli exports looked like a mere 67 years ago. Today, Israel is a high-tech superpower and one of the world’s top weapons exporters with approximately $6.5billion (£5.2billion GBP) in annual arms sales. Since 1985, for example, Israel is the world’s largest exporter of drones, responsible for about 60 percent of the global market, trailed by the US, whose market share is under 25 percent. Its customers are everywhere — Russia, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany and Brazil. In 2010, for example, ?ve NATO countries were ?ying Israeli drones in Afghanistan. How did this happen? How did Israel, a country not yet even 70 years old, become a superpower with one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world that is changing the way modern wars are fought? The answer, I believe, is a combination of a number of national characteristics unique to Israel. First, despite Israel’s small size, about 4.5 percent of its GDP is spent on research and development, almost twice the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development average. Of that amount, about 30 percent goes to products of a military nature. By comparison, only 2 percent of German R&D and 17 percent of the US R&D is for the military. Another major contribution is the culture of innovation and creativity in Israel. Israelis are more willing to take risks than other nations. They get this from their compulsory military service during which they are tasked, at a young age, to carry out missions often with deadly consequences. While Israeli 19-year-olds embark on operations behind enemy lines, their Western counterparts can be found in the safety of their college dormitories. Lastly, Israel has been in a perpetual state of conflict since its inception, fighting a war almost every decade. This reality, of having your back up against the wall, sharpens the mind. It forces Israelis to be creative and come up with innovative ways and weapons to survive. This is the Israel story … Robotic border patrols :: The Guardium is a part of a new category of robotic weapons known as Unmanned Ground Vehicles or UGVs. Israel is the first country in the world using these robots to replace soldiers on missions like border patrols. In addition, soldiers require breaks, food and water. All a Guardium needs is a full tank of gas. Other UGVs in use by the IDF include the Segev, which is based on a Ford F-350 pickup truck. Facing terrorists who use tunnels to infiltrate into Israel from places like the Gaza Strip, Israel is also relying on UGVs like robotic snakes to slither their way into underground passageways and enemy headquarters. The robots will then map out the structures, giving soldiers an accurate picture of a battle area before the place is stormed. The same is happening at sea. Israeli defence contractor Rafael has developed an unmanned patrol ship called Protector which is being used by Israel to protect its strategic ports and patrol the country’s long Mediterranean coastline. The Arrow anti-missile programme :: In 2000, the Israeli air force received its ?rst operational Arrow missile battery, making Israel the ?rst country in the world with an operational system that could shoot down incoming enemy missiles. Mini Spy Satellites :: In 1988, Israel launched its first spy satellite into space, gaining membership in the exclusive club of just eight nations with independent satellite-launching capabilities. From the beginning, there were those who doubted Israel was capable of developing, building and launching its own satellite, but in the nearly 30 years since that day, it has grown into a satellite superpower, now operating eight different spy satellites in space. Drones :: It is referred to in Israel as the “drone that can reach Iran.” The Heron TP is Israel’s largest unmanned aerial vehicle with an 85-foot wingspan, the same as a Boeing 737 airliner. It can stay airborne for 24 hours and carry a 1-ton payload. The top-secret tank :: To this day, the Merkava tank is one of Israel’s most top-secret projects. It is said to be one of the most lethal and protected tanks in the world, and its construction started out of pure necessity — the United Kingdom and other countries refused to sell Israel tanks.
