Ed Marquez and Christoph Hahn highlight the benefits of using Powertrain Blockset™. Some of these benefits include the ability to use well-documented, open, and reconfigurable blocks to represent powertrain components. In addition, Powertrain Blockset allows for highly detailed parametrization of components based on user data and supports code generation from models. Three demo models are shown using Powertrain Blockset: a vehicle dynamics (glider) representation, a battery electric vehicle, and a combustion engine vehicle. The input to the models is a publicly available certification drive cycle (US06), and users can choose the information they wish to obtain from the model. Throughout the demos, Ed and Christoph verify that the speed output of the vehicle model matches the speed input from the drive cycle without any major trace misses. Determining the structural properties of a truss or beam framework is part of many introductory mechanics courses for civil mechanical engineers. Apart from analytical schemes or graphical methods such as the Cremona plan, displacements and member forces can be calculated using the direct stiffness method. This technique, which is the basis for all considerations within that episode, is a classic first step to explore the Finite Element Method (FEM). Starting from an analogy between a truss framework and a FSAE steel tube frame, Christoph explains the basics of the direct stiffness method using an introductory example of a 3-truss framework. He also introduces you to the MATLAB File Exchange where users have contributed various implementations of the direct stiffness method. Sarah Drewes and Christoph Hahn of MathWorks set up an optimization task for a suspension assembly in Simulink Design Optimization™. They look at the mathematics involved and share best practices to obtain optimal results in an efficient manner. The underlying models are available on MATLAB Central File Exchange. Starting from there, an optimization problem is setup in a mathematically rigorous manner. Two different formulations are discussed as well as the relevancy for algorithms to solve the system. To support that, Sarah and Christoph show a simple demo that graphically illustrates how a smart choice of algorithm and method can prevent users from finding local optima instead of the global optimum. With regards to the suspension model, they go through the full workflow of setting the optimization problem up in Simulink Design Optimization, followed by choosing the appropriate solver to converge to the desired result in timely manner, and assessing the final results.

In this video, Sebastian shows how to model the rigid-body mechanics of a two-legged walking robot using Simscape Multibody™. Christoph Hahn and guest presenter Jose Avendano introduce you to options available for accessing the data within your vehicle’s CAN bus. Data obtained through Simulink® data logging or other devices can be directly integrated into virtual CAN channels to be included in simulations to assess fidelity and accuracy. They discuss CAN data logging using Simulink hardware support packages for CAN devices. These tools allow you to log the information within your CAN network or to create custom data loggers depending on your needs. CAN replay functionality is also demonstrated to integrate data acquired into simulations or data visualizations for performance analysis. By implementing CAN interactions through Simulink support, you can create custom electronics that can use information directly from the vehicles CAN bus or even interact with existing CAN nodes. The main takeaways of this second part of the RC Racecar series are that Simulink support packages for CAN devices allow you to create custom CAN data loggers, include CAN data in simulations, and create custom electronics to interact with existing CAN devices in the vehicle. You can also use these tools to create powerful visualizations of testing data, increase and verify the fidelity of your simulations, or program custom electronics that may provide you with a competitive advantage by having access to real-time information from the CAN bus.
