Room & Pillar Mining Process
Room and Pillar Mining: Modern Coal Mining at Its Best When it comes to underground mining, there are different ways to approach removing coal, depending its structure and location. At the current Carlisle Mine and developing Bulldog Mine, Sunrise Coal is using the room and pillar method. Safe, Efficient & Environmentally Friendly Room and pillar is a non-subsidence plan for a mine, preserving the precious farmland above. It is among the safest and one of the most ecologically-friendly approaches to mining coal today, creating a non-subsidence environment (no movement of land) and maintaining clean water standards. Removing Coal from the Earth As the name indicates, large pillars of coal (40 feet wide) are left standing to help support the roof of the mine—more than half of the coal remains intact as supporting pillars to maintain the integrity of the surface land. The end result is a grid of open space (rooms) cleared by a continuous miner machine and separated by pillars. Once the coal is cleared and placed on a conveyor belt to our state-of-the art surface wash plant, roof bolters enter the new area to secure the roof, inserting fully grouted 6-foot metal rods every four feet. At the wash plant, rock and debris are separated from the coal so that it can be cleansed of sulfur and other minerals in preparation for our customers. Cat® Room & Pillar Mining Equipment
The room & pillar mining method is used predominantly for underground coal deposits, however also for potash deposits. Coal is not completely being mined out from the underground deposit, but pillars are left standing to keep the roof from caving in. Caterpillar offers a complete range of machinery for this mining method. The extensive room & pillar product line includes a seamless range of continuous miners, face haulers, continuous haulage systems, feeder breakers, roof bolters as well as a broad range of battery- and diesel-driven utility vehicles like scoops and LHD vehicles.

Room And Pillar Method In A Red Ore Mine
Exploring deep inside a beautifully intact 1890's era red ore mine. Mining methods back then called for the room & pillar method when extracting red ore while going deep underground. Large sections were left intact for better roof support. Coal mines also adapted and used this mining method. The flooded sections of this mine were encountered roughly 1300 feet down from the opening. Very rare access was granted to explore this site as it resides on private property.

Principles of Longwall Mining
This video provides a basic description of the long-wall mining method for extracting coal underground. It includes an explanation of the different products/key components of a long-wall mining system (long-wall shearer, automated plow system, AFC face conveyor, line pans, CST drive system, roof supports, long-wall automation). CAT can support roof heights from 0.8 meters to 7.5 meters.
Underground coal mine by Indian minerology
Underground coal mine :- Most coal seams are too deep underground for opencast mining and require underground mining, a method that currently accounts for about 60 percent of world coal production.[5] In deep mining, the room and pillar or bord and pillar method progresses along the seam, while pillars and timber are left standing to support the mine roof. Once room and pillar mines have been developed to a stopping point (limited by geology, ventilation, or economics), a supplementary version of room and pillar mining, termed second mining or retreat mining, is commonly started. Miners remove the coal in the pillars, thereby recovering as much coal from the coal seam as possible. A work area involved in pillar extraction is called a pillar section. Modern pillar sections use remote-controlled equipment, including large hydraulic mobile roof-supports, which can prevent cave-ins until the miners and their equipment have left a work area. The mobile roof supports are similar to a large dining-room table, but with hydraulic jacks for legs. After the large pillars of coal have been mined away, the mobile roof support's legs shorten and it is withdrawn to a safe area. The mine roof typically collapses once the mobile roof supports leave an area.

Red Ore Mine - The Room & Pillar
A video compilation taken while exploring an historic red ore mine deep underground. This mine dates back to the 1880's when mining was performed by what was called the room and pillar method. Large sections of ore were left intact for structural support of the ceilings in mines. Long headers were created off the main slopes with a series of break throughs connecting to each one. This also provided much needed air ventilation for the miners as they worked deep below. The remaining sections of the mine flooded out long ago. This mine resides on private property and special permission was obtained in order to explore it.

Ventilation Control of Coal Dust in Mines 1980 MSHA
This 1980 MSHA film clip demonstrates various ventilation techniques to control dust including the use of proper face ventilation to effectively remove airborne dust. Over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. The NIOSH Publication, Handbook for Dust Control in Mining summarizes those practices and is available at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/pubs/pubreference/outputid20.htm . This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Dust control methods described are practical and cost-effective for most mine operators. This is clipped from the 1980 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) film, Coal Dust: Hazards and Controls.

The Principle of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC)
Caterpillar has extensive experience in the design of roof supports for specific mining conditions. Cat Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) roof supports allow mining of seams seams thicker than 6 meters (20 feet). Following a conventional cut with a shearer to about 3 m (9.8 ft) the roof supports move forward and allow the caving of the top coal behind the roof supports a second conveyor mounted gob-side. This special LTCC method enables increased coal reserve recovery for only an incremental additional cost. This animation shows how it works.

Southeast Kentucky Coal Mining
This is a short video/photo collage of pillaring in Southeastern Kentucky. This is a process of mining the coal pillars which are the primary roof support in an underground coal mine. This process is to allow you to mine the maximum amount of coal, the mine roof just behind the pillars are suppose to collapse, but due to MSHA regulation and fear of injury/death the amount of pillar to be removed is highly limited and the number of timbers/temporary roof support is increased. This often causes the weight on the pillars to ride back behind the working area creating a more dangerous situation than normal.
