Why A Postdoc Is A Waste Of Time

04:03
Hello and welcome to another edition of Ask Cheeky. I'm Isaiah Hankel with Cheeky Scientist and this week's question comes from Kartik Shirur. "How does a postdoc position compare to a research scientist position?" How does a postdoc position compare to a research scientist position? Then he follows up with, "How does an industry postdoc position compare to an academic postdoc position?" Here we're comparing three things and this is a great question, one we get a lot. One that we're always answering with our Associates is how do you compare an industry postdoc versus an academic postdoc versus a research scientist position in industry and which should you go for first? What are the pros and cons? Now the first thing we always like to give this advice and all of our postdocs and our consultants who have done postdocs give this advice too that there's no real reason to do an industry postdoc especially if you want to stay in industry you want to go into industry. Most companies, if you do an industry postdoc for them, they will not keep you afterwards. You'll do an industry postdoc, you won't make as much money as you could as a research scientist and then they'll let you go afterwards. This is really a last resort and it's not something you should focus on first. Instead if you want to go into industry and make sure that you're doing your best to transition into a research scientist position, even an entry level research scientist position. You'll get paid better, have better benefits and you'll have more responsibility and you'll move up from that role of just being a postdoc and having to do what you're told. However, that being said there is a little bit more independence in a postdoc position, even an industry postdoc position. If you really, really value your independence and you want to stay on a typical postdoc route but in industry it might be a good fit for you. In terms of academic postdocs versus industry, obviously in academia you're going to be paid much less. Less than even an industry postdoc and the goal, the only reason to do an academic postdoc in today's world, in today's academic environment is if you still want to try to go on and be a professor. We've talked a little bit about those numbers though. Obviously the trends in terms of open professorships is going way down. Unless you really want to hold off for an academic position and you're okay going for five or six years, up to 10 years as a postdoc in your academia, I highly, highly recommend that you don't do that. If you want to transition in industry, don't do an academic postdoc, there's no reason to. There's no reason to do an industry postdoc either. You might be asking, "Why is this? Don't some positions require an industry postdoc?" No and if you look at many of the articles we've published, a lot of our postdocs have written articles that talk about the the fact that staying in academia to do a postdoc doesn't help you at all. Many postdocs are working in research scientist positions next to people with masters degrees or just bachelors degrees and they're at the same level. They're at the same research scientist three level or the same senior scientist level. What this means is, don't get disheartened by this, it just means that once you get your PhD if you made the decision to go in the industry, the sooner you can do it the better. There's no reason to stay academia and certainly there's no reason to do an industry postdoc. If you want to eventually get into a research scientist position, you're better off going directly into that research scientist position as soon as possible. The pay obviously will be much higher, you'll be able to climb the ladder faster in your career trajectory that will be much different. Every year you stay in academia, you're actually holding yourself back, right? That's one year of not getting industry experience or on-the-job training in that research scientist position. So finally, if you made that decision to move into industry, you just have to realize that you already all the tools you need, you have all the technical skills, you have the PhD, that box is checked. You also have developed many of the transferable skills you need to transition into industry. Staying in a postdoc is not going to help you develop more transferable skills. Now you already have what you need so you should go ahead and not hold back and go ahead and start applying to those research scientists positions. Until next time, remember your value as a PhD and start thinking and acting like a successful industry professional.

What You Should Know About Getting a Career In Astronomy/Astrophysics

10:26
This video will cover how to get into space research (such as astrophysics or astronomy) and some research that is going on. For those looking into space related majors, your best options are astronomy and astrophysics. However, as an undergrad you will usually just start as a physics major then pick a more specific discipline in grad school. You also will need to get a PhD if you want to do work in astrophysics or astronomy. There really aren't jobs in these fields for those with just bachelor's degrees. Although the field is very competitive, if you have a true interest for the subject, most people will tell you to pursue it. Even if you don't land a job that you want, astrophysicists and astronomers can find work in other fields such as finance, engineering, software development, teaching, and more. *************************************************** ► For more information on math, science, and engineering majors, check us out at https://majorprep.com *************************************************** ► Patreon: https://patreon.com/majorprep ► PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/majorprep ► Facebook: https://facebook.com/majorprep

Careers in Public Policy and the Think Tank World

01:07:04
Justin Wolfers, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, took part in the Think Tank Diversity Consortium's (TTDC) first Careers in Public Policy event on May 9, 2015, at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP). As part of the TTDC's mission to increase diversity in the think tank and public policy arena, the event was held to offer high school and first-year college students in the Washington area an opportunity to learn from researchers at internationally known organizations how to prepare for a career in public policy. Wolfers's key advice was to become an expert on one specific issue rather than mediocre in several fields. While economics is not the only option, policymakers are especially interested in advice from economists. Beyond the think tank sector, Wolfers suggested international institutions, media and publishing, and academia as other rewarding options for young scholars interested in pursuing a career in public policy. Human resource directors from the Peterson Institute for International Economics, the Brookings Institution, and CEIP cochaired the event.

Inspiring Non-Traditional Jobs in Nursing: From Changing the World to Leading the Way: What Can I Do with a Nursing Degree? Find out here! Nursing specialties inspired by a passion for social change A common answer to the question, “So, why did you go into nursing?” is, “To make a difference in my patient’s lives.” But, what if you had a drive to affect widespread change? Public health nursing, public health research, or epidemics research might be your dream field. Public health nurses are charged with caring for entire communities. They help determine which factors directly impact their community’s health and work to create interventions to help as many people as possible. Advocacy and health education are the mainstays of public health nursing. Public health research nurse. If research fuels your passion, public health nurse researcher is a profession to consider. Hospitals are over-crowded and understaffed. Nurses who provide care in the community allow for vulnerable populations to remain in their homes and out of the hospital and nursing facilities. Home health nurses visit the homes of their patients to perform skilled nursing tasks such as assessments, wound care, medication management, and care planning. Similarly, hospice nurses enter the homes of patients at the end of their life to make sure their needs are met. They focus on pain control, helping the families through the grieving process, and ensure the patient’s dignity is maintained. Community nurses may focus on one special population, such as patients with HIV, homeless patients, or immigrants. They work to ensure care is available that is specific to the population. Legal nurse consultants analyze and give opinions about delivery of care and outcomes related to medical malpractice, personal injury, or life care plan cases. A law degree is not necessary; most LNCs learn on the job¹. They may be employed by law firms, hospitals, insurance companies, government agencies, or themselves. Specializing in fields of medicine Pediatric nursing can be extremely challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. You could find yourself caring for primarily asthma patients on a respiratory care floor, trauma patients in the pediatric ICU, or babies weighing less than a pound fighting for their lives in the newborn ICU. Oncology nurses are specially trained in caring for patients with cancer. These often medically fragile individuals require chemotherapy, which the nurses have to be certified to administer, and their care is often exceedingly complex. If you’re ready to step away from the bedside, however, perhaps informatics is a possibility for you. As a health informatics nurse, you could work on a specific unit to help tease data from the patient charts to help the medical teams recognize patterns in care and outcomes. This is an excellent way to be a part of the healthcare team while forgoing direct patient care. Adrenaline boosters: Exciting fields for nurses! Do you spend your days off rock climbing, whitewater rafting, or skydiving? Perhaps you need a nursing job that gets your adrenaline flowing. Critical care nurses care for the sickest of the sick in intensive care units. They’re highly-trained individuals who drag patient's back from the brink of death on a daily basis. Critical care nurses are often required to respond to codes in the rest of the hospital. Emergency department nurses in trauma centers assess and stabilize patients who may come in after a car crash, gunshot wound, or home improvement accidents. Their patient loads vary from dehydration from the flu, accidental dismemberment, to mass casualty incidents, and much more. Case management nurses help to coordinate the care of patients with complex medical needs who receive multiple services. They often work with medical teams in the hospital to ensure the patient’s needs will be met upon discharge. Clinical nurse leaders are masters-prepared nurses who work in a specific hospital unit. They assess the needs of their patient population and determine which health issues are specific to them. Pressure ulcers, central line-associated bloodstream infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia all fall within the purview of the clinical nurse leader. Things about a PhD nobody told you about | Laura Valadez-Martinez | TEDxLoughboroughU

16:23
This talk guides postgraduate students and those thinking of doing a PhD through the vicissitudes of the doctoral process. In a friendly and down-to-earth way, the speaker illustrates issues that many doctoral students face. The talk covers seven challenges that may emerge during a PhD: I’m stuck!, There’s more!, I have no motivation!, I forgot what I did!, I am not sure this is relevant!, I feel lonely! and I don’t know what is next! For each one of these challenges, the speaker provides recommendations on how to tackle them, which draw both on empirical studies and anecdotal evidence. The suggestions go from having “thinking time” to let ideas mature to keeping a research diary, from sticking to a few research questions to saving multiple copies of the thesis manuscript files. The talk recognises that doing a PhD could be more difficult than one may initially expect but that there are ways to overcome the obstacles and enjoy the learning process. Dr. Laura Valadez-Martinez is a Research Associate at the Center for Research in Social Policy of Loughborough University, specialising in income adequacy, poverty measurement, and childhood poverty and well-being. Born and raised in Mexico, she became aware of social inequalities from a young age, and volunteered in various non-governmental organisations. Volunteering activities helped Laura realise that social development requires coherent combined action between the government, civil society, and the private sector. This led her to pursue higher education in the areas of public administration and social policy, under the premise that a sound understanding of social problems is crucial to promote well-being. Consequently, Laura studied the Masters in Public Policy at Monterrey Tech in Mexico. She also holds an MSc in Public Policy in Latin America and the PhD in Social Policy from Oxford University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

With an undergraduate degree in Statistics, you can get a job, go to graduate school in Statistics, go to graduate school in a field other than Statistics, or do something else. The last alternative is possibly the most interesting, but beyond the scope of this document. Statistics students who plan on graduate study in a non-statistical discipline probably know how Statistics fits into their plans. Here, we will deal with the first two options. GETTING A JOB With an undergraduate degree in Statistics, you are a more attractive candidate for jobs that require an understanding of statistical information. For example, in an industrial setting, you will be able to readily understand information based on statistical quality control, even though you probably will not have a course in it. In a management or sales position in an insurance company, you will be able to understand actuarial data, even though you are not an actuary. In a marketing or market research setting, lots of the data come from sample surveys and are subjected to standard statistical analyses. You will be able to understand and use these data, even though you may not be crunching the numbers yourself. Let's face it; with a degree in History, are you qualified as a professional historian? With a degree in Mathematics, are you going to be hired as a mathematician? With a degree in Physics, are you going to get a job as a physicist? With a bachelor's degree in Statistics, you should not count on being employed as a statistician. You will probably be hired as something else. In fields like History, Mathematics and Physics you need a Ph. D. in order to be taken seriously as a professional. In fields like Engineering and Computer Science, an undergraduate degree is just fine. Statistics is in a sort of intermediate category. A Master's degree qualifies you to do applied statistics for a living in a medical, business or government setting. GRADUATE SCHOOL So if you're a good student, you really like Statistics and you're sure that's what you want to do for a living, you should consider graduate study. Even if your ultimate goal is a Ph.D., you generally get a Master's degree first, and then seek admission to PhD programmes. MASTER'S PROGRAMS Let's be clear about one point. We are not talking here about what you know, or what you are truly qualified to do. We are talking about the perceptions of potential employers. The topics taught in our Specialist and Major programs have a large overlap with the topics in Master's level courses, both here and in other schools. The topics may be covered at a more advanced level in graduate school, but in terms of what you would do the job, there's not much difference. At least, you will learn the material better than you did the first time, and after you finish your career earnings should be significantly higher. You will get more respect, and the work will be rewarding if you like analyzing data. You'll need a year of on-the-job experience before you are actually as qualified as you appear to be, but that's no problem. It's true in any field. In any respectable master's degree program, there will be at least a one year course in mathematical statistics (same material as STA256/257 and STA260/261 but deeper and faster), in which your brains are pulverized and poured back into your ear. This is thought to be a beneficial experience. PH. D. PROGRAMS Many Ph. D.s in Statistics go into the private, public and medical sectors as applied statisticians on the fast track. Their training, however, is in statistical research. In Statistics, as in all other disciplines, Ph. D. students learn to create new knowledge in their field, to formulate important new questions and answer them. Every theorem and statistical technique you learn is the result of somebody's research. Researchers in Statistics mostly are professors at universities, and their students tend to view them exclusively as teachers. In fact, at U of T the typical professor's job description consists of 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% administrative duties and community service. This is true in most fields, not just Statistics.
