The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8

13:04
In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is. NY Times Makes BIG YouTube Error

13:29
There is a big problem with this NY Times article. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. MORE TYT: https://tyt.com/trial Read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/08/technology/youtube-radical.html "Caleb Cain pulled a Glock pistol from his waistband, took out the magazine and casually tossed both onto the kitchen counter. “I bought it the day after I got death threats,” he said. The threats, Mr. Cain explained, came from right-wing trolls in response to a video he had posted on YouTube a few days earlier. In the video, he told the story of how, as a liberal college dropout struggling to find his place in the world, he had gotten sucked into a vortex of far-right politics on YouTube. “I fell down the alt-right rabbit hole,” he said in the video. Mr. Cain, 26, recently swore off the alt-right nearly five years after discovering it, and has become a vocal critic of the movement. He is scarred by his experience of being radicalized by what he calls a “decentralized cult” of far-right YouTube personalities, who convinced him that Western civilization was under threat from Muslim immigrants and cultural Marxists, that innate I.Q. differences explained racial disparities, and that feminism was a dangerous ideology." Was it the Right Move for NYT to End its Daily Cartoons?

Was it the right move? Does it challenge the notion of freedom of expression? Former illustrator and cartoonist Avi Katz analyzes. Story: The New York Times announced Tuesday it will no longer publish daily political cartoons in the international edition of the paper, just weeks after apologizing for publishing a caricature of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deemed anti-Semitic. In May, the Times Editorial Board apologized for the cartoon depicting a blind US President Donald Trump wearing a Jewish skullcap leading the Israeli leader portrayed as his guide dog, with a Star of David collar and leash affixed around his neck. Its publishing in the international edition of the NYT caused an uproar within the Jewish community and condemnations from both the American president and vice president.  The Times editor James Bennet said the paper had been in discussions for over a year to cease running political cartoons in the international print edition, thus joining the US version in doing so. Bennet said the decision will come into effect on July 1. Patrick Chappatte, one of the paper's leading cartoonists, linked the decision to the controversy surrounding the Netanyahu cartoon, reflecting that years of work had been undone by a single cartoon that never should have run in the first place. "In the past years, some of the very best cartoonists... lost their positions because their publishers found their work too critical of Trump. Maybe we should start worrying," Chappatte wrote in a post on his personal blog. “I’m afraid this is not just about cartoons, but about journalism and opinion in general. We are in a world where moralistic mobs gather on social media and rise like a storm, falling upon newsrooms in an overwhelming blow."

"The Making of a YouTube Radical" - The New York Times Rebutted!

52:24
Stefan Molyneux of Freedomain Radio responds to the New York Times article attacking YouTubers for making arguments on the internet. Audio: https://soundcloud.com/stefan-molyneux/the-making-of-a-youtube-radical-the-new-york-times-rebutted "In late 2014, YouTube recommended a self-help video by Stefan Molyneux, a Canadian talk show host and self-styled philosopher. Like Mr. Cain, Mr. Molyneux had a difficult childhood, and he talked about overcoming hardships through self-improvement. He seemed smart and passionate, and he wrestled with big questions like free will, along with practical advice on topics like dating and job interviews. "Mr. Molyneux, who describes himself as an “anarcho-capitalist,” also had a political agenda. He was a men’s rights advocate who said that feminism was a form of socialism and that progressive gender politics were holding young men back. He offered conservative commentary on pop culture and current events, explaining why Disney’s “Frozen” was an allegory about female vanity, or why the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer was proof of the dangers of “rap culture.” "Mr. Cain was a liberal who cared about social justice, worried about wealth inequality and believed in climate change. But he found Mr. Molyneux’s diatribes fascinating, even when they disagreed. “He was willing to address young men’s issues directly, in a way I’d never heard before,” Mr. Cain said. "In 2015 and 2016, as Mr. Cain dived deeper into his YouTube recommendations, he discovered an entire universe of right-wing creators..." https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/08/technology/youtube-radical.html ▶️ Donate Now: http://www.freedomainradio.com/donate ▶️ Sign Up For Our Newsletter: http://www.fdrurl.com/newsletter Your support is essential to Freedomain Radio, which is 100% funded by viewers like you. The Brexit Party Still Tops the Polls!

02:57
The latest YouGov poll still has The Brexit Party at the topped four points clear of its nearest rival. The latest YouGov poll for the Times showing Westminster voting intentions shows that The Brexit Party led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage is still out in front with the Lib Dems now four points behind. The Greens are in fifth and have also dropped slightly from 9% to 8% and the SNP are in sixth but have also dropped a point from 5% to 4%. Plaid Cymru though picked up a point and went from a statistical zero to one percent. The field work for the survey was conducted on the 9th and 10th of June, which was before Boris Johnson won the Tory leadership first round vote so convincingly. And with more votes due as well as a televised BBC debate this Tuesday, we may see a rise in Tory poll fortunes next week, possibly at the expense of The Brexit Party. The Lib Dems may be able to hold on to their current strong showing for a while. But bear in mind that the Labour Party leadership is beginning to come under pressure to embrace a second EU referendum and if it then becomes seen as more of a home for Europhiles by August, we might see the Lib dems begin to slide in the polls in the coming months. But Labour may not be the direct beneficiary, as many of its more Eurosceptic supporters may end up opting for The Brexit Party. But it might all come down to a battle as to who can grab the imagination of the UK voters: Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson or whoever the new Tory leader is, Jeremy Corbyn or the new Lib Dem leader whoever takes over from the outgoing Vince Cable. It'll be interesting to see how that all pans out. #Brexit #TheBrexitParty #NiogelFarage Sources: https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/14/voting-intention-brex-26-lib-dem-22-lab-19-con-17-?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=VI_10_june_2019 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/jeremy-corbyn-labour-brexit-referendum-party-members-survey-tom-watson-a8959396.html https://youtu.be/pT5q0Yi_eU8

Jello's Political Apocalypse

13:09
I prefer pudding anyway if I'm being honest Jello Apocalypse's 'vote' video was very bad, and while I do sort of agree with a bit of what he says, for the most part the way he manipulates the truth and used fabricated guilt to try and move for a cause is very bad. He acts like these events transcend traditional policy, much like Casey Neistat did, acting as if this election goes above average partisan sophistry, when in reality, that's exactly what it is. Politics Unusual: Political Cartoons in the Age of Trump

02:51
Snap open any newspaper on any given day in 2017 and one's eyes eventually find their way to a caricature of a certain elected-leader with a distinctive hairdo. "He's just so flamboyant and so captivating," said cartoonist Jeff Danziger, who confessed to some Trump fatigue after months spent drawing the same man every day but also admitted that the new administration has left him wanting not for creative inspiration. "No, you roll out of bed and somebody's done something stupid, said something crazy," he added. Born into a family of artists and letter writers, Danziger started drawing cartoons in the margins of various documents as a child continuing through college and a tour in Vietnam, where he won both a Bronze Star and an Air Medal before returning to the United States and a job as political cartoonist for a local paper in Vermont. "The first responsibility is to be amusing or humorous or interesting and the second responsibility is to be at least somewhat close to the facts," Danziger said. "If it's done right, it's beyond language." "That's why cartoonists around the world have been murdered," Columbia University Professor Victor Navasky said. "In the Middle East, they've been thrown into prison." Publisher emeritus of The Nation, Navasky wrote "The Art of Controversy: Political Cartoons and Their Enduring Power." He said caricature arrived in this country with the first settlers but flexed its influence most famously in the 1800s when lampooning New York City politician Boss Tweed, who failed to hide how much the cartoons bothered him. "I don't care what articles newspapers print about me but get rid of those damn pictures because my constituents can't read but they can't help seeing those damn pictures," Navasky said of Tweed. The influence of those pictures bestow upon the minds and pencils of the cartoonist a unique power, whether David Levine drawing Lyndon Johnson with a scar of Vietnam or Herblock showing a slimy, unshaven Richard Nixon emerging from a sewer. "Nixon could never live that down," Navasky said. "We like these guys who are really amusing in themselves, because they set the joke up," Danziger said. "Caricature is important but it's not the only thing." And so the political and cultural ascendancy of Donald Trump and his wave of golden hair have ushered in a wealth of material and perhaps a golden age for political cartoonists. Danziger, whose drawings run in major daily newspapers all around the world, pointed to the pullitzer-prize-winning cartoonist pat oliphant's decision to un-retire at the age of 81. "He's the best there is and now he's been lured back by Mr. Trump," Danziger said. "Images are more prevalent than ever and people have less attention spans," Navasky said. "They remain fun not only to see but it's fun to do them," Danziger said. -MAC KING

It's an amazing moment, and even with the pages still alive to this day, the one thing they will never get back is their integrity, since conservative Facebook pages sacrificed their own morals for advertising revenue and corrupt political power.

I think so, don't you see the newspapers (man reading the newspaper headlines): 'They are reheating the Prodi soup', and this one: 'Prodi to restart, today Napolitano decides'. Let's hope he will send us out to vote." 9. Men walking in street 10. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Voxpop "What I would like? I would like a revolution, so don't ask me". 11. Men crossing road 12. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Voxpop "I believe it would be right to appoint Prodi again". 13. Wide shot of Piazza Venezia STORYLINE Italians woke up on Saturday morning ahead of a widely anticipated decision by President Giorgio Napolitano on who he'll ask to form the next government. Morning editions of Italian national newspapers carried headlines reading "Fear of Berlusconi unites Prodi backers", and "The union: Prodi has the numbers". On Friday, centre-left leaders rallied behind Romano Prodi, boosting his chances of returning to office days after he resigned as premier. The politicians told the Italian president, who has been holding talks aimed at solving the political crisis, that they were ready to support any bids by Prodi to return to the premiership. Earlier, they all signed up to a new detailed government program that Prodi said would be "nonnegotiable." "I hope that he (Napolitano) will take us to elections again," said one resident, whilst another hoped that Prodi would be reappointed. Prodi stepped down on Wednesday after an embarrassing parliamentary defeat over foreign policy, including the government's plan to keep troops in Afghanistan. Defections by radical leftists, who have been voicing opposition to various government policies, were to blame. Also among those who expressed their support were leaders of Communist parties and other radical leftists. Prodi has been scrambling to widen his support by luring in a handful of moderate senators. He is also trying to ensure the support of at least some of seven honorary senators appointed for life. Karnataka Election: Why it matters, with Prashant Jha, Hindustan Times' Political Editor

06:57
Today is a big day in Indian politics. Counting is in the way. But it’s important to understand why this matters. Congress, is down to three and a half states, Punjab, Karnataka, Mizoram and Puducherry. This is a battle of survival. If Congress loses Karnataka, it will be down to its worst ever performance nationally. This is the first election after Rahul Gandhi took over the party. This is an equally important election for the BJP. For the BJP this is about consolidating its dominance. Since 2014, BJP has emerged as the primary poll of Indian politics. But the south has been most formidably resistant to the BJP’s influence. Anti-Iran Forbes "Writer" UNMASKED

Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Read more here: https://theintercept.com/2019/06/09/heshmat-alavi-fake-iran-mek/ "IN 2018, PRESIDENT Donald Trump was seeking to jettison the landmark nuclear deal that his predecessor had signed with Iran in 2015, and he was looking for ways to win over a skeptical press. The White House claimed that the nuclear deal had allowed Iran to increase its military budget, and Washington Post reporters Salvador Rizzo and Meg Kelly asked for a source. In response, the White House passed along an article published in Forbes by a writer named Heshmat Alavi. “Iran’s current budget is funded largely through ‘oil, taxes, increasing bonds, [and] eliminating cash handouts or subsidies’ for Iranians, according to an article by a Forbes contributor, Heshmat Alavi, sent to us by a White House official,” Rizzo and Kelly reported. The White House had used Alavi’s article — itself partly drawn from Iranian sources — to justify its decision to terminate the agreement." The Political View with Lukhona Mnguni

It's a Monday and time for our weekly feature on this day, the Political View. South Africa featured prominently in the New York Times this weekend and not for the right reasons. The global paper published an article called, "South Africa vows to end corruption. Are its new leaders part of the problem?" It details how Deputy President, David Mabuza, has risen within the ANC, even though education was in a shambles in the Mpumalanga Province when he was premier of that province. To discuss we're joined by political analyst, Lukhona Mnguni, from our studio in Durban. For more news, visit: sabcnews.com

Trump’s Tariffs And The Weather Are Making Life Hell For Farmers

05:49
For America’s farmers, the bad news just keeps coming. They’ve already been dealing with the fallout from the Trump administration’s trade war with China, which destroyed the market for American soybeans and hurt other crops as well. And now, they’re in the middle of the most catastrophic planting season in living memory. Months of rain have drowned fields across the country. It’s especially tough on farmers who invested lots of money when times were better. Reid Thompson and Arin Rader are two of those guys. They leased a big chunk of land, spent millions of dollars on new technology, and now they’re just trying to pay their debts and keep their operation going. The new round of government payments will help, but what they’re really looking for is a respite from the storms, both literal and political. New York Times slams political response to mass shootings - Daily Mail

01:17
The New York Times' editorial, the first to run on it's front page since 1920, criticized elected leaders for putting a 'higher premium' on the gun industry's money and political power than on citizens' safety. But the New Jersey governor argued that the real issue was the mental health system and argued that doctors needed more power to involuntarily commit patients. Christie also claimed greater government intelligence would keep the country safer and criticized Ted Cruz and Rand Paul for supporting the bill that overhauled the NSA's surveillance programs. Click Here For Latest Political News & Updates ►http://bit.ly/2uhxJgc Away from the attention that Article 370 usually invites, a section of BJP sympathisers are steadily pushing the party's less-noticed promise of altering Article 35A of the Constitution, which empowers the J&K government to define "permanent residents" of the state. The article enables the state to provide special rights and privileges that permanent residents can enjoy but has been criticised by BJP as a provision that encourages alienation, deepens the concept of a separate identity and creates a political gap between J&K and the rest of India. Article 370 - Documentary - The political game in the making 1

A close look at reports in newspapers in the valley reveals quite a bit. On one hand while the PDP and the NC have upped the ante against the Narendra Modi government and its talk of revoking Article 370, the other side of the story is that there is a voice which suggests that this sudden concern over Article 370 by the two key political players in the valley is a election ploy. Political commentator Mesfin Negash's view on Ethiopian Muslims movement for religious rights.

23:47
Political commentator Mesfin Negash's view on Ethiopian Muslims movement for religious rights. Mesfin Negash (Amharic: መስፍን ነጋሽ) is an Ethiopian journalist, political commentator for Addis Neger and columnist for Sampsonia Way Magazine. He is a graduate of Addis Ababa University where he studied political science. Negash is a graduate of Addis Ababa University where he studied Political Science. His career as a journalist started at the Ethiopian Reporter in 2001. He wrote on issues of politics and international relations. Before the controversial May 2005 elections, Negash left the newspaper to join Meznagna newspaper as a columnist while working for local and international NGO as a communication specialist and program officer. His political articles in Meznagna were most supportive of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy(CUD). In one of his articles, he opposed the early position of his former paper which called for the establishment of unity government in Ethiopia. Mesfin's contention was that the ruling party's democratic centralism is too much of an impediment for the formation of any governing coalition with it.[1] Meznagna was shut down in December 2005 by the government because it was first to publish the CUD's unconstitutional and illegal call for the removal of the government even though the paper itself didn't advocate for the forceful removal of the government.[2] In 2007 five former Meznagna journalists, including Mesfin Negash, established Addis Neger. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the paper for a year before he moved to a managerial position. Under Negash's watch Addis Neger grew to be one of Ethiopia's leading newspapers. The articles Negash wrote for the paper were milder in their tone and criticism of the government than his articles in Meznagna. The paper faced intimidation and harassment under Ethiopia's anti-terrorism law, which criminalizes any reporting that directly or indirectly "encourages" or provides "moral support" to "terrorist groups."[3] In August 2008 an Ethiopian judge sentenced Mesfin Negash to a suspended one month imprisonment for a news report that appeared in the July 26 issue on the trial of iconic musician Teddy Afro. The ruling judge stated that they were compelled by law not to run the story because "it infringes on the reputation of the court.[4] In 2010 the staffers at Addis Neger shut down the newspaper and Negash fled Ethiopia, leaving his mother and wife behind. In February 2012 he was granted asylum in Sweden. He noted, "It wasn't a single incident that pushed me to leave Ethiopia -- it was numerous incidents over the course of several months."[5] In May he was elected the Human Rights Defender of the Month by the Civil Rights Defenders campaign to protect human rights defenders at risk around the world. In June 2012, Negash was found guilty of supporting terrorism along with 23 other defendants by an Ethiopian court and sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison.[6] In a column for Sampsonia Way Magazine Negash commented on the conviction that "the sentences carry no practical consequences for the professional freedom of those 'convicted' living in exile" and that "anyone, Ethiopian or not, who supports the democratic hope of the nation in any manner is considered an enemy of the state, or a 'terrorist.'"[7] Since May 2012 Negash has served as a columnist for the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh's Sampsonia Way Magazine where he "shares Ethiopian views on pertinent issues related to journalism, culture, and, of course, the overarching subject of politics." He is also the Managing Editor of Addisnegeronline.com.[8]
