Lean Manufacturing: Cycle Time Analysis, Variance Tracking & Eliminating Work Stoppages

http://www.driveyoursuccess.com The following video is a summary of a project that was run for a small manufacturer were we analyzed their production throughput, performed cycle time analysis and review while also tracking the variances in those cycle times. We use three methods to calculate average in cycle time analysis for this and other projects. These three are the mean, the mode and the median. The video explains how to calculate manufacturing cycle time averages in these three aforementioned ways. The mean is the one we always associate as average. This simply involves taking all the cycle times in a given sample portion and dividing it by the number of operations or cycle times captured. The next method of the mode manufacturing cycle time which is simply the cycle time that appears most frequently during the sample portion. Ultimately, the mode is often the one where the work stoppages and downtime are not a factor. As such, it's often the best benchmark for cycle time analysis. Finally, the median involves re-configuring all the times from lowest to highest and using the following calculation to identify the average time: Median { ( N + 1 ) / 2 } where N is the number of operations. In this case, it's 10 +1 = 11 divided by 2 which is 5.5. Therefore, we isolate the cycle time in-between the 5th and 6th time. Finally, all of these cycle times are placed on a graph in order to identify the variances in cycle times and high and low points. The idea is to isolate the root causes of high and low cycle times while putting a plan in motion to eliminate causes of work stoppages. Industrial engineer is a branch of engineering that concerns with the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, material and process. It also deals with designing new prototypes to help save money and make the prototype better. Industrial engineering draws upon the principles and methods of engineering analysis and synthesis, as well as mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. What exactly is Value Analysis? What are the core elements of this methodology? And why has this approach been so successful for 70 years? How do you proceed within such a value analysis project? What are the tasks of a Professional in Value Management (PVM)? This short explanatory video gives a first overview of the topic using the example of a construction project. The methodology Value Analysis is an organized and creative approach that applies a function- and cost-oriented design process with the aim of increasing the value of the value analysis object. It is characterized by: • Functional orientation (basic idea: The customer does not want the object but its function / effect) • Value concept (How can I increase the value of an object? How can I realize functions at the best price?) • Holistic approach (integration of all stakeholders) • Interdisciplinary teamwork (integration of employees from product development, production, sales, purchasing ...) with space for creativity • Structured, step-by-step approach (according to the value analysis work plan described in the guideline VDI 2800) and • Application neutrality, which means that the methodology can be used independently of the industry, from the phase of the project (from the concept phase to the existing product) and from the considered object (product, process, service). How these core elements, responsible for the success of the methodology, are working together, is shown vividly. In 1947 Value Analysis has been developed in the USA by Lawrence D. Miles. It is a major part of scientific management (Taylorism). After its first introduction, time study developed in the direction of establishing standard times, while motion study evolved into a technique for improving work methods. The two techniques became integrated and refined into a widely accepted method applicable to the improvement and upgrading of work systems. This integrated approach to work system improvement is known as methods engineering... Time and motion study have to be used together in order to achieve rational and reasonable results... Time study Time study is a direct and continuous observation of a task, using a timekeeping device (e.g., decimal minute stopwatch, computer-assisted electronic stopwatch, and videotape camera) to record the time taken to accomplish a task and it is often used when: - there are repetitive work cycles of short to long duration, - wide variety of dissimilar work is performed, or - process control elements constitute a part of the cycle. The Industrial Engineering Terminology Standard defines time study as "a work measurement technique consisting of careful time measurement of the task with a time measuring instrument, adjusted for any observed variance from normal effort or pace and to allow adequate time for such items as foreign elements, unavoidable or machine delays, rest to overcome fatigue, and personal needs." The systems of time and motion studies are frequently assumed to be interchangeable terms, descriptive of equivalent theories. However, the underlying principles and the rationale for the establishment of each respective method are dissimilar, despite originating within the same school of thought. The application of science to business problems, and the use of time-study methods in standard setting and the planning of work, was pioneered by Frederick Winslow Taylor. Taylor liaised with factory managers and from the success of these discussions wrote several papers proposing the use of wage-contingent performance standards based on scientific time study. At its most basic level time studies involved breaking down each job into component parts, timing each part and rearranging the parts into the most efficient method of working. By counting and calculating, Taylor wanted to transform management, which was essentially an oral tradition, into a set of calculated and written techniques. Taylor and his colleagues placed emphasis on the content of a fair day's work, and sought to maximize productivity irrespective of the physiological cost to the worker... Motion studies In contrast to, and motivated by, Taylor's time study methods, the Gilbreths proposed a technical language, allowing for the analysis of the labor process in a scientific context. The Gilbreths made use of scientific insights to develop a study method based upon the analysis of work motions, consisting in part of filming the details of a worker's activities while recording the time. The films served two main purposes. One was the visual record of how work had been done, emphasising areas for improvement. Secondly, the films also served the purpose of training workers about the best way to perform their work. This method allowed the Gilbreths to build on the best elements of these work flows and to create a standardized best practice. Taylor Vs. the Gilbreths Although for Taylor, motion studies remained subordinate to time studies, the attention he paid to the motion study technique demonstrated the seriousness with which he considered the Gilbreths' method. We see Identity as the non-genetic DNA of us, one that is co-created by our environments and ourselves, and which drives in a powerful way our choices, our relationships and our lives. Speakers as diverse as Eric Drooker, New Yorker artist, to Beau Lewis, producer of the American Hipster series, to John Murray, scientist at the SRI International labs, came to share their perspectives on Identity. Martin Steinert, researcher at the Stanford Center for Design Research Martin Steinert, Acting Assistant Professor ME, is Deputy Director of the Center for Design Research (CDR) and of the Hasso Plattner Design Thinking Research Program (HPDTRP) at Stanford University. His research focuses on optimizing the intersection between engineering, new product development and the design process.He got hooked on Design Thinking when he spent some time at CDR in 2008 as visiting scholar. In 2009 he continued to explore the field by joining the Product Design and Development group of Prof. Warren Seering, PhD at MIT, again for a semester as visiting scholar. Martin fully "converted" to Design Thinking Research by joining Stanford and Larry's group in April 2010 as Deputy Director of CDR.His special interest is to combine empirical research methods of quantitative and qualitative nature to create a comprehensive research designs. The usual suspects are disruptive technologies or innovations induced by the same and the fuzzy front-end of product design and development.
