Luther and the Protestant Reformation: Crash Course World History #218

15:07
In which John Green teaches you about the Protestant Reformation. Prior to the Protestant Reformation, pretty much everyone in Europe was a Roman Catholic. Not to get all great man, but Martin Luther changed all that. Martin Luther didn't like the corruption he saw in the church, especially the sale of indulgences, so he left the church and started his own. And it caught on! And it really did kind of change the world. The changes increased literacy and education, and some even say the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of Capitalism in Europe. Hijabs, yarmulkes, habits, and dastars — why do so many religions have rules about hair? The practice of covering hair is common across many faiths, so today we're talking about various types of head coverings, their significance, and their use throughout history. --- Written and Hosted by: Danielle Bainbridge Produced by: Complexly for PBS Digital Studios --- Follow us on... Regions of the World that were a Different Race/Ethnicity/Religion in the Past

10:40
How has immigration, ethnic cleansing and racial intermixing changed the face of many regions of the planet? Today we're going to discuss regions of the world that were predominately a different race/ethnicity/religion sometime in the past, only looking through a neutral lens, without bias, malice or resentment. By discussing these controversial topics, I understand that a few people will get offended no matter what, and accuse me of being 'on the other side.' I understand that this is inevitable and it's a risk I'm willing to take. Please let me know your thoughts on these strange changes that have taken place in various regions of the world. Thanks for watching! Islam explained by a non Muslim

10:56
Like us on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/IslamicAwarenessMovement A very informative video about Islam for non-Muslim friends, explained by a non-Muslim. Giving a brief history of Islam and answering many misconceptions and false rumors. What is Islam? Islam is not a new religion, but the same truth that God revealed through all His prophets to every people. "Islam" simply means peace through submission to God. For a fifth of the world's population, Islam is both a religion and a complete way of life. Islam is not a cult. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it is considered to be one of the three Abrahamic traditions. Its followers number over 1.5 billion worldwide. One billion people from a vast range of races, nationalities and cultures across the globe - from the southern Philippines to Nigeria - are united by their common Islamic faith. About 18% live in the Arab world; the world's largest Muslim community is in Indonesia; substantial parts of Asia and most of Africa are Muslim, while significant minorities are to be found in the Soviet Union, China, North and South America, and Europe. Muslims are found throughout various parts of the world including China, Islam is a multi-national faith with Muslims in every country! There are five pillars of practice in Islam. These practices must be undertaken with the best of effort in order to be considered a true Muslim: A) Shahadah -- or declaration of faith in the oneness of God and that Muhammad is the last prophet of God. B) Payer five times a day. C) Fasting during the daylight hours in the month of Ramadan. D) Poor-due charity - 2.5% of one's savings given to the needy at the end of each year. E) Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once, if physically and financially able. There are six articlesof faith in Islam. These are the basic beliefs that one must have in order to be considered a true Muslim. Muslims believe in One, Unique, Incomparable God; in the Angels created by Him; in the Prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind; in the Day of Judgement and individual accountability for actions; in God's complete authority over human destiny, and in life after death. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets starting with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus, peace be upon them. But God's final message to man, a reconfirmation of the eternal message and a summing-up of all that has gone before was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad Peace and Blessings be upon him through Gabriel. In Summary the articles of faith are belief in: A) The One God. B) All the Prophets of God. C) The original scriptures revealed to Prophets Moses, David, Jesus, and Muhammad. D) The Angels. E) The Day of Judgment and the Hereafter. F) The divine decree (or destiny). Islam is a complete way of life that governs all facets of life: moral, spiritual, social, political, economical, intellectual, etc. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. To become Muslim, a person of any race or culture must say a simple statement, the "shahadah" (or the "witnessing"), that bears witness to the belief in the One God and that Prophet Muhammad was the last Prophet of God. The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God, regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background. Becoming a Muslim is a simple and easy process that requires no pre-requisites. One may convert alone in privacy, or he/she may do so in the presence of others.

Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich

What Islam really says about women | Alaa Murabit

12:14
Alaa Murabit's family moved from Canada to Libya when she was 15. Before, she’d felt equal to her brothers, but in this new environment she sensed big prohibitions on what she could accomplish. As a proud Muslim woman, she wondered: was this really religious doctrine? With humor, passion and a refreshingly rebellious spirt, she shares how she discovered examples of female leaders from across the history of her faith — and how she launched a campaign to fight for women's rights using verses directly from the Koran. Why all the hate for the Jews? Before we look at why people hate Jews, also known as Antisemitism, we need to define “Jew.” A Jew is someone who identifies with the cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who traces their ancestry to the ancient Hebrew people of Israel, all the way back to Abraham. Jewish people are considered an ethnoreligious group. Both an ethnic group and a religion. There are plenty who identify as Jews yet are not religious. Israel’s Law of Return, which is the law that gives Jews the right to visit and be a citizen of Israel, says a Jew is someone with either a Jewish mother or who has converted to Judaism. Anyway, during the time of Jesus in ancient Israel, many were of course Jewish, including Jesus himself. After Jesus died, his followers started a new religion called Christianity. As Christianity spread, and as more and more Roman emperors converted to the religion, Jews became marginalized in society, even though Jews worshipped the same God as Christians did. Roman rulers viewed the refusal of the Jewish community to accept Jesus as the Messiah as a threat. They straight up passed laws that discriminated against Jews. In the year 399, a law saying Jews couldn’t marry Christians, in 439, a law saying Jews couldn’t hold positions in government. In 531, a law saying they couldn’t appear as witnesses against Christians in court. Rumors began to spread that Jews had horns and tails, and that they killed Christian children and used their blood for rituals. In the Middle Ages, many societies forced Jews to live in segregated ghettos and wear special clothing. The Catholic Church did not allow Jews to own land, so Jews couldn’t build up wealth through property. However, the Church also didn’t let Christians loan money for profit. Jews could, so they often turned to money lending to build up wealth. Due to the fact that nearly every moneylender happened to be Jewish, this ended up creating a stereotype that Jews were greedy. I mean, people who loan money and charge interest throughout history have rarely been seen in a positive light, amIright? Christian rulers used Jewish money to build extravagant churches and build up armies. By the 11th century, Christianity dominated Europe, and the main minority religion was Judaism. Jews seemed to be the one group Christians could not convert, seen as outsiders. By this time, the Catholic Church was even teaching that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. And then, the Black Death. During the 14th century, the bubonic plague spread quickly across Europe, killing around ⅓ of its entire population. Since this was before science, people had no idea what was causing it. Due to superstition and fear, and without any evidence whatsoever, Christians blamed Jews for causing the plague, accusing them of poisoning wells to spread the disease.

The Seven Deadly Sins

07:31
The Seven Deadly Sins were a list of psychological flaws first identified by Christianity in the 4th century. Christianity was wise in spotting the errors, but rather ungenerous in explaining why they existed. Given that we are all, in a sense, ‘sinners’, we need to find better explanations for our bad behaviour. Conference on Religion and the Global Politics of Human Rights - Russia and Asia Session

02:00:14
For more on this event, visit: http://bit.ly/caP8qM For more on the Berkley Center, visit: http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu March 15, 2007 | Are "universal" human rights in fact an imposition of western or Christian ideas? Is democracy, the "rule of the people," compatible with God's law? How does religion inform -- and impede -- the struggle for human rights around the world? The Berkley Center conference on "Religion and the Global Politics of Human Rights" brought together leading anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and political scientists to explore questions on the ways in which religion intersects with the global human rights agendas. It breaks with the dominant "top down" approach centered on the principles found in sacred texts and authoritative theological and legal interpretations. Participants grappled with the issue "bottom up" -- the interaction of human rights and religion in practice and the challenges they pose for national and international politics. Third Conference Session: Russia and Asia Marjorie Balzer, Georgetown University, "Religious Communities and Rights in the Russian Federation" Pratap Mehta, Center for Policy Research, New Delhi, "Human Rights and the Ethnicisation of Religion in India" Charles Keyes, University of Washington, "Can Non-Buddhists Have Equal Rights in Buddhist Countries?" David Ownby, University of Montreal, "China, Religion, and Human Rights: Social Change and State Response" Robert Wuthnow, Princeton University- Discussant This conference, convened by Thomas Banchoff, Director of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University, and Robert Wuthnow, Director of the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, was the third in a series. In April 2005 Georgetown University sponsored the Conference on New Religious Pluralism and Democracy. In March 2006, the Berkley Center hosted the inaugural Conference on the New Religious Pluralism in World Politics. Two books based on those conferences were published with Oxford University Press and edited by Center director Thomas Banchoff: Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism (2007) and Religious Pluralism, Globalization, and World Politics (2008).

Instead, they fight indirectly by supporting opposing sides in other countries and inciting conflicts. This is known as proxy warfare. And it’s had a devastating effect on the region. Countries, especially poor ones, can’t function if there are larger countries pulling strings within their borders. And that’s exactly what's happening in the Middle East. The Saudi-Iranian rivalry has become a fight over influence, and the whole region is a battlefield. In which John Green teaches you about conflict in Israel and Palestine. This conflict is often cast as a long-term beef going back thousands of years, and rooted in a clash between religions. Well, that's not quite true. What is true is that the conflict is immensely complicated, and just about everyone in the world has an opinion about it. John is going to try to get the facts across in under 13 minutes. Amber Scorah | Leaving The Witness

52:52
Amber is joined in conversation with Saïd Sayrafiezadeh to discuss her book that you can purchase here: https://www.strandbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.results&includeOutOfStock=0&searchString=Amber+Scorah+Leaving+The+Witness A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Amber Scorah had devoted her life to sounding God's warning of impending Armageddon. She volunteered to take the message to China, where the preaching she did was illegal and could result in her expulsion or worse. There, she had some distance from her community for the first time. Immersion in a foreign language and culture--and a whole new way of thinking--turned her world upside down, and eventually led her to lose faith in all that she had been sure was true. As a proselytizer in Shanghai, using fake names and secret codes to evade the authorities' notice, Scorah discreetly looked for targets in public parks and stores. To support herself, she found work at a Chinese language learning podcast, hiding her real purpose from her coworkers. Now with a creative outlet, getting to know worldly people for the first time, she began to understand that there were other ways of seeing the world and living a fulfilling life. When one of these relationships became an "escape hatch," Scorah's loss of faith culminated in her own personal apocalypse, the only kind of ending possible for a Jehovah's Witness. Shunned by family and friends as an apostate, Scorah was alone in Shanghai and thrown into a world she had only known from the periphery--with no education or support system. A coming of age story of a woman in her thirties, this unforgettable memoir examines what it's like to start one's life over again with an entirely new identity. It follows Scorah to New York City, where a personal tragedy forces her to look for new ways to find meaning in the absence of religion. With compelling, spare prose, Leaving the Witness traces the bittersweet process of starting over, when everything one's life was built around is gone. Amber Scorah is a writer living in Brooklyn, NY. She works as an editor at Scholastic and her articles have been published in The New York Times, and The Believer. Prior to coming to New York, Scorah lived in Shanghai, where she was the creator and host of the wildly popular podcast Dear Amber - The Insider's Guide to Everything China. This is her first book. Saïd Sayrafiezadeh is a memoirist, fiction writer and playwright. He is the author of the story collection, Brief Encounters With the Enemy, a finalist for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Fiction Prize, and the critically acclaimed memoir, When Skateboards Will Be Free, selected as one of the ten best books of the year by Dwight Garner of The New York Times. Globalization I - The Upside: Crash Course World History #41

11:51
In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get into some of the less-positive side effects of globalization. Also, you should turn on the captions. स्वामी विवेकानंद – एक क्रांतिकारी सन्यासी Swami Vivekananda - a revolutionary ascetic Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in the form of Lord Nath Dutt, the home of Vishwanath Datta and Bhuvaneshwari Devi in Kolkata. In this article, Sadhguru is telling about some incidents in the life of Swami Vivekananda, from which it is known that his Guru What was his relation with and what message he wanted to spread among the people. After Ramakrishna Paramahansa received divine knowledge, he became a lot of disciples. He had a disciple, Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda was the first yogi to visit America. In 1893 he went to Chicago to join the Parliament of the world's religions. After going there, they carried a spiritual wave. At the time when people had many fears about something new, they opened the door to some extent. Ramkrishna had a very different kind of relationship with Vivekananda as he considered Vivekananda as a means of bringing his message to the world. Were. Ramkrishna could not do this work himself, so he used to see Vivekananda as his messenger. People around Ramkrishna could not understand why he was so mad about Vivekananda. If Vivekananda did not come to meet him on a single day, then Ramakrishna would go out in his search because he knew that this boy has an important understanding of communication. Vivekananda was equally crazy for Ramkrishna Paramhans. He did not find any job, he did not do any work which people of his age generally do. Articles of Religion - 17 - The Church

03:10
We believe that the Christian Church is the entire body of believers in Jesus Christ, who is the founder and only Head of the Church. The Church includes both those believers who have gone to be with the Lord and those who remain on the earth, having renounced the world, the flesh, and the devil, and having dedicated themselves to the work which Christ committed unto His church until He comes. The Church on earth is to preach the pure Word of God, properly administer the sacraments according to Christ’s instructions, and live in obedience to all that Christ commands. A local church is a body of believers formally organized on gospel principles, meeting regularly for the purposes of evangelism, nurture, fellowship, and worship. The Wesleyan Church is a denomination consisting of those members within district conferences and local churches who, as members of the body of Christ, hold the faith set forth in these Articles of Religion and acknowledge the ecclesiastical authority of its governing bodies.
Never Do These Things in Foreign Countries

10:13
If you don’t want to be in one of those, or better yet featured on YouTube as “that crazy tourist,” fined or even arrested, pay attention to our list of do’s and don’ts accurate in different countries of the world. “So many countries, so many customs.” Any jet-setter will agree this good old proverb is true. In the age of globalization, going places has become an essential part of our life. We’re all well aware of the fact that while visiting a foreign country, we must obey certain local traditions and common rules. Failing to do so has given a rich ground for many jokes. TIMESTAMPS Russia 0:54 Chile 1:44 Singapore 2:18 India 3:05 Japan 3:29 Mexico 4:07 New Zealand 4:39 Norway 5:25 Turkey 5:49 United Kingdom 6:29 Ireland 7:03 Germany 7:35 Kenya 8:26 Malaysia 9:16 Korea 9:35 SUMMARY - If you want to surprise your Russian girlfriend or your business partner, never give an even number of flowers as a gift. Even numbers of flowers are for grieving and funerals. - Manners matter more to the people of Chile than to other South Americans. It is extremely important not to eat anything with your fingers. - Chewing gum, for example, is banned in Singapore, so you’d better leave it at home before getting on the plane. If you break the gum rule for the first time, you may be fined for up to a $1000. - When in India, you have to keep your private life to yourself and your emotions under control. No matter how much you want to show affection to your special someone, never kiss them in public. - Similar to India, public demonstration of affection is not acceptable in Japan. Remember, there is no hugging, or even worse, kissing, in public! - A good piece of advice will be to stay as thick skinned as possible since Mexicans love making jokes and never miss a chance to do so. Don’t take things too personally. - Remember the difference between “aussies” and “kiwis.” Never mix them up! In case you didn’t know: the “aussies” stand for Australians, and the “kiwis” – for New Zealanders. - When in Norway, don’t ask questions concerning church. This may be taken for disrespect. Many people here don’t attend church, and those who do will want to keep it to themselves. - An essential thing to remember before going to Turkey is not to give anyone the OK sign. It might seem like a sign of approval to you but is considered an obscene gesture for the Turks. - British people like their pudding fresh and their queues well-organized. Don’t jump the queue. Or expect to be judged by the locals. - Do not try to play it cool and sound like Irishmen. For Irish people there is no such a thing as Irish accent; they recognize and divide accents depending on the region of Ireland they come from. - Don’t stare at people. Germans might look very attractive but try to resist the temptation of staring at Fraus on the metro. Only poorly educated and crazy people do that here. - Don’t show disrespect for religion. No matter what their religion may be, Kenyans are very devout. - For Malaysians, this is “the home of the soul” and the most sacred part of the body. Keep yourself from running your fingers through people’s hair, especially babies. - If you want to have good manners in Korea, use two hands when handing over money. When you pay for things, pass on your cash or credit card with both hands. It’s a sign of respect. Do you know any other things that are prohibited in foreign countries?
