Database Cleaner Plugin That Removes Expired Transients | WP Learning Lab
Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Database Cleaner Plugin That Removes Expired Transients | WP Learning Lab Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Security Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist An easy database cleaner process is to remove expired and non-expired transients from your WordPress database. This database cleanup process involves a plugin that deletes bits of information that are temporarily stored in your database. Sometimes, a plugin developer will code the expiration incorrectly and the transients never expire. This can lead to a bloated and slow database. The transients accumulate in the wp_options table. The view the size of the table you have to access your phpMyAdmin through your hosting account cPanel. Then you open the database for your site and you will see a high level table called wp_options. To the far right it shows the size of the table. Make note of the size and compare it to the size of the table after you clear any expired transients the plugin finds. Next, let's install the plugin. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New. On the next page type "delete expired transients" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed. Once activated, a new menu item is added under the Tools menu called Delete Transients. Click on that menu item. Now you'll see the simple, single page of the plugin. This page shows how many expired transients there are on your site and how many transients in total. Transients that aren't expired are generally needed by one of your plugins to work properly. After a certain amount of time those transients expire and can be deleted. Improperly coded plugins don't have that expiration associated with the transients, so the transients never expire and just pile up in your database. Below the numbers of transients, you can choose what to delete. The safest is to delete expired transients, if there are any. Since they're expired they're no longer in use. You also have the option of deleting all transients, which you should do with caution. There is a chance it will affect your site's functionality until the plugin needing those transients creates them again. However, on one of my sites, I have a plugin, I don't know which one yet, that keeps creating transients without expiring them. So my database keeps growing in size. So, in my case I'm comfortable deleting all the transients because that improves my site's function. After you've chosen the right option for you click on the Delete button. Now you can go back to your phpMyAdmin and refresh the page to see if there is a change in the size of the wp_options table. For me, the change in size is always substantial. I hope this information helps you! Clean Your WordPress Database By Removing Orphaned Tables
Clean Your WordPress Database By Removing Orphaned Tables https://youtu.be/Q-RnDNjnCy8 Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Security Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist Clean WordPress database by removing orphaned tables. These are tables that plugins created, but didn't delete when the plugin was deleted. Nearly every WordPress site that's been around for a length of time has orphaned tables. This tutorial will show you how to clean your WordPress database by removing orphaned tables. Why is that important? If you have had a WordPress site for any amount of time, then you will have installed and removed many plugins. Often those plugins leave tables in your database even after the plugin has been deleted. Those are called orphaned tables. The presence of orphaned tables isn’t a huge deal, but when you’re optimizing your site, every little bit helps. And remove these tables is very easy. Carry on to see how step-by-step. Step 1 – Add a New Plugin What you need to do first is go to your WordPress dashboard and add a plugin by clicking on Plugins, then Add New. Look up the plugin keyword Garbage Collector. The plugin we want is by Vladimir Garagulya. The plugin is not tested in the most recent version of WordPress so make sure you backup your site in order to avoid any mishaps. Click on Install Now and then Activate. Step 2 – Open Garbage Collector Menu In order to set up the plugin, you’ll need to click on Tools and then find a new option called Plugins Garbage Collector. Step 3 – Scanning the Database When you click on Plugins Garbage Collector, you’ll see a page with three options. We suggest you check the show hidden files box and search none-WP tables and then click on scan database. Step 4 – Analyzing the Results The results will be shown in three different colours – red, green and blue. Red means that there are possible orphaned tables from plugins that aren’t being used on your WordPress site at the moment. This means that these tables ought to be deleted. The green colour highlights tables required by active plugins. Finally, the blue tables are from plugins that still exist on your site, but are inactive. However, the only available option is deleting the red ones. Once again, make sure you backup your site before making any changes and deleting the orphaned tables. If something goes sideways it’s important to have a backup. You can also see the size of the orphaned tables in kilobytes. Wp-Cron.php May Be Slowing Your Site - Create A Server Cronjob Instead | WP Learning Lab
Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL These are two pieces of code referenced in the video: define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', 'true'); cd /home/HOSTING_USERNAME/public_html; php -q wp-cron.php When you create your cronjob make sure you replace HOSTING_USERNAME with the username of your hosting account. To find it see the section below called "Finding Hosting Username". -------- Wp-Cron.php May Be Slowing Your Site - Create A Server Cronjob Instead If your site gets a lot of traffic there is a good chance that the wp-cron cronjob is slowing down your site. The wp-cron.php runs every time a page loads on your site. It's checking to see if the site has any scheduled posts that need to be published. This is fine when a website has low traffic, but when traffic is higher it can become a big problem. Here's how to create a server-side cronjob to fix the problem. An interesting tidbit is that if you schedule your posts they won't publish if no-one visits your site. Or they will publish later than you want because people come to your site after the scheduled publishing time. You might be wonder what is cron job. At it's simplest, it is a script that runs at set times and causes other scripts to run. Like a WordPress scheduled post, for example. Let's get to it. There are two things we need to do to move our cron jobs server-side. First we have disable the wp-cron.php file so it's cronjob stops. Then we need create a cron job on the server. To disable wp-cron.php you need to open your wp-config.php file for editing. Inside that file, just below where you have all your database information, paste the following code on it's own line. define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', 'true'); That will disable the wp cron. Save the wp config file and step one is complete. Next, Finding Hosting Username. To find this open the file manager in your cPanel and look for where it says /home/ at the top of the file hierarchy on the left side. Right after /home/ is your hosting user name. Make note of it because we'll need it soon. Now, back in your cPanel find an option called Cron Jobs and open it. On the following page you will see a section called Add New Cron Job. There you will be able to set the Minute, Hour, Day, Month and Weekday of your cron job. At the bottom of that list you will see an input field called Command. Paste the following code into it, replacing "HOSTING_USERNAME" with your actual username: cd /home/HOSTING_USERNAME/public_html; php -q wp-cron.php For the timing options you can choose whatever you wish. I tend to stick with running the cron every 6 hours. To do that choose the following: Minute - 0 (at the beginning of every hour) Hour - every 6th hour Day - every day Month - every month Weekday - every day That will run the cron job every 6 hours on the hour for eternity or at least until you turn it off. Then click the Add New Cron Job button and you're done. You've created your first cron job. Your server and your host will be thanking you when your site traffic picks up! I hope this information helps you! How To Manually Purge/Clear WooCommerce Shipping Rate Cache
In this video I go over how to purge and clear the WooCommerce Shipping Rate Cache. WooCommerce is great, but there is a bug in the code that even if you click “Clear Transients”, “Clear Expired Transients” and even “Enable Shipping Debug” (which should stop shipping rate caching), WooCommerce will still write (cache) the rates into the database. The only way to fix it is manually. You can find the text version of this video here: http://piotrkrzyzek.com/clear-woocommerce-shipping-rate-cache/

The talk will touch on three protocols from this family and relate them to each other: The first, Rumor Mongering, spreads gossip in each call. This protocol was invented at Xerox PARC for the purpose of synchronizing replicas in the Clearinghouse directory service. The second, Name Dropper, pushes new neighbors in each call. This protocol was developed at Akamai for network discovery in a partially connected network. The third, SWIM, pulls a heartbeat in each call. This mechanism was developed at Cornell University in order to implement scalable failure detection. The Little Engine(s) That Could: Scaling Online Social Networks
Google Tech Talk (see below) June 17, 2010 Presented by Josep M. Pujol. ABSTRACT The difficulty of partitioning social graphs has introduced new system design challenges for scaling of Online Social Networks (OSNs). Vertical scaling by resorting to full replication can be a costly proposition. Scaling horizontally by partitioning and distributing data among multiple servers using, for e.g., key-value stores using DHTs, can suffer from expensive inter-server communication and other performance issues. Such challenges have often led to costly re-architecting efforts for popular OSNs like Twitter and Facebook. We design, implement, and evaluate SPAR, a Social Partitioning and Replication middle-ware that mediates between the application and the database layer of an OSN. SPAR exploits the underlying social graph structure to partition user data and selectively replicate users to ensure that users have their neighbors' data co-located on their machine. The gains from this are multi-fold: application developers can assume local semantics, i.e., develop as they would for a single machine; scalability is achieved by adding commodity machines with low memory and network I/O requirements; and N+K redundancy is achieved at a fraction of the cost. We provide a complete system design, extensive evaluation based on datasets from Twitter, Orkut, and Facebook, and a working implementation. We show that SPAR performs well in terms of reducing the overhead, and dealing with high dynamics experienced by an OSN gracefully. We implement a Twitter like application and evaluate SPAR with MySQL and Cassandra using real datasets and show significant gains in terms of req/s and reduction in network traffic. Speaker Info: Josep M. Pujol is a member of the Telefonica Research Labs in Barcelona http://research.tid.es/ working on the intersection of social networks, search and system scalability. Prior to Telefonica he was a post-doc at the University of Michigan affiliated to the Center for the Study of Complex Systems and the Department of Epidemiology where he worked on modeling infection transmission and dose-response models. Josep earned the PhD from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya with his dissertation on the effects of social structure in artificial societies.
