No dogs! words for the story: It was half past three and Katie had just finished school. Her mum was waiting at the gates withJessie, the dog. "Can we go to the park with Jaia, Mum?" said Katie. "Alright, we can go for half and hour," said Mum. When they got to the park, Katie and Jaia ran towards the swings and slides. "Come on!" shouted Katie, "Let's see how high we can go on the swings!" "You can't come in here, Jess!" shouted Katie and Jaia. Mum took Jessie over to the bench and tiedhim to it. She sat down and started to read the paper. "Did you have a nice time?" Mum asked. "Yes, it was brilliant! I went the highest!" said Katie. "No, I went the highest," said Jaia. "Come on, we need to take you home," said Mum. That night, Jessie couldn't sleep. He was thinking about the park. Quietly, he got of his basket and walked downstairs. He squeezed through the cat flap -- he was outside! He ran towards the park. Soon Jessie was at the park. He walked towards the swings. The gate was open. He went through and looked around...the playground was full of dogs! Jessie climbed up the ladder, went down the slide, whizzed round on the roundabout, went up and down on the see-saw, bounced on the springy, and went up and down on the swing. "Wooooof!" barked Jessie. He went as high as he could on the swing. Soon it was time to go. Jessie got off the swing, went through the gate and walked back home. He squeezed through the cat-flap, walked upstairs and got into his basket. He looked at Katie. "I went the highest," thought Jessie. And went to sleep. We hope you enjoyed watching No dogs! and we will see you soon on LearnEnglish Kids!

"It was very hard being different. I had to be very good at pretending when both teams played each other." "I couldn't cheer when my team scored. I had to go the bathroom and celebrate there." "I couldn't be sad when the other team scored." "I could only have my team's posters on my bedroom wall when I was alone." "If someone came to my room, I had to be quick to change how it looked." "I had to have a secret wardrobe too. I hid my favourite team's clothes behind the other team's." "Birthdays were terrible too. I always got football gifts for the wrong team. But then my life changed." "A billionaire bought both clubs in my town and made one big team -- Boxton United." "Now I can relax and enjoy all the matches with my family. I go to the bathroom a lot less now too." We hope you enjoyed watching My secret team and we will see you soon on LearnEnglish Kids!

British Council Active Citizens Sudan

04:22
In this short British Council film, three Welsh Active Citizen's from The British Council's Sudan project talk about their involvement in the scheme. Al Fat'eh is essentially a refugee camp for people displaced by the conflicts in Southern Sudan and Darfur. This area just outside Khartoum lacks many essential services. Water, sanitation and healthcare are largely provided by NGOs and the United Nations, while transport is inadequate and costly for the impoverished residents who wish to travel to Khartoum to find work. Moreover, most lack security of tenure, which means they don't own the land they've been moved to and therefore could be evicted again. The community in Al Fateh represents Sudan's multi-ethnic diversity, including Nuba people, Afro-Arab tribes, Muslims and Christians. Comprehensive community mapping has taken place here for the Active Citizens programme. This has revealed particular demand for intercultural dialogue and social action in areas of tension between different ethnic and religious groups. However, tensions frequently surface between people competing for scarce resources. The mapping identifies that activities like sports, drama and music can bring together people from different backgrounds, and it is hoped these can be used by Active Citizens to promote peaceful co-existence. Active Citizens was launched in Sudan in 2009, and its partners here are mainly representatives of Sudanese government and civil society, including groups such as the Women's Union, Karari Locality and the Women's Centre for Peace and Development. So far, 33 residents of Al Fateh from diverse backgrounds have become participants. They are divided into six groups, each developing a project that aids their community. So far, projects have focused on encouraging sustainable development in Al Fateh, such as micro-finance schemes -- in which cash crops are developed to use and sell -- education for children and adults, and raising awareness of environmental issues that will ensure careful use of resources and improved levels of sanitation. In areas with little access to electricity, let alone the internet, one of the essential projects is to provide electric generators. There are also plans to hold IT workshops where participants can learn computer and internet skills. Gerard Lemos, Acting Chair of the British Council, visited Al Fateh City in January 2010 and was keen to discuss these projects with participants. Tilal Salih from British Council Sudan believes "[Gerard's] background in dealing with vulnerable societies makes him a good listener to what these citizens have to offer. In finding solutions to upgrade and develop Al Fateh City, our participants are indeed Active Citizens, making a huge difference with very few resources. Richard Weyers, Director of British Council Sudan, sums up the project: "British society has a lot to learn from Africa. Maybe one of the amazing things to come out of this programme will be that UK communities can learn about the importance of caring for extended family [as seen in Africa]." Job Interview Tips 9 - You're Hired | Learn English | British Council

02:04
Practice exercise: http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/youre-hired/episode-9 Before accepting the job offer Sarah meets Marcia to try to negotiate on a few areas of her contract. Transcript Marcia Boardman: Hi! Welcome to WebWare. Sarah Timms: Thanks, nice to see you again. Marcia Boardman: You too. So, you said you wanted to come in and have a chat before you started... Sarah Timms: Yeah, I just wanted to have a look round and ask a few more questions, if I can... Marcia Boardman: Sure, fire away! Sarah Timms: Well, I was delighted to receive the job offer... Marcia Boardman: Good -- we were delighted to offer it to you... Sarah Timms: But before I sign the contract there were one or two specifics I wanted to talk about. Marcia Boardman: OK... 'specifics'? Sarah Timms: Well... there is a pay scale, instead of a fixed salary... Marcia Boardman: Yes, as a new employee you'd be at the lower end of the pay scale. Sarah Timms: But taking my experience into account... Marcia Boardman: Well, you haven't had that much experience -- we see you as an investment... Sarah Timms: But that salary would only be a little more than I'm making now. So, instead of asking for a higher level on the pay scale, I thought this could be compensated by adding certain bonuses - for instance if I make certain sales targets, or even break them, I would be looking for a good cash payment, or stock options in the company. Marcia Boardman: Well, that is something we sometimes offer senior members of staff, but to show good faith I'll provisionally offer you the bonus scheme -- but I'll have to okay it with Philip first. Sarah Timms: That's fine. I also see there are 25 days holiday. Marcia Boardman: Yes. That's standard. Sarah Timms: It's not very much for a high pressure job though... Marcia Boardman: I can't offer you any more holiday. Sarah Timms: No, but I was wondering if we could delay my start date, so instead of starting a week from now, as we discussed, I could start in a month's time? Marcia Boardman: You're a tough negotiator, Sarah! Sarah Timms: That's one of the reasons you hired me! Marcia Boardman: Yes, of course. OK, I think we can do that -- I'll look forward to seeing you in a month, and earning those bonuses! Making comparisons | Johnny Grammar | Learn English | British Council

05:18
Test your English in Johnny's new quiz app for phones and tablets, on both iOS and Android! To download the "Johnny Grammar's Word Challenge" app for free, visit our LearnEnglish website: http://bit.ly/1tVk59X Comparison of adjectives and adverbs 1. Comparatives and superlatives We form comparatives and superlatives by adding -er and -est to one-syllable adjectives. When the adjective is vowel consonant (b i g), add an extra consonant (big+ger): When Trevor bought a big car Brian went out and bought a bigger one. Brian's car was the biggest. We use 'more' and 'most' for adjectives with 2 or more syllables: Trevor decided to buy an expensive computer. So Brian had to go out and buy a more expensive computer. A few adjectives have irregular comparatives and superlatives: Mike had the best house in Charm Street. 1-syllable adverbs use -er and -est to form comparatives and superlatives: Brian and Trevor worked in the same office and Brian worked much harder than Trevor. 'Well' and 'badly' have irregular comparatives and superlatives: They both got on well with the boss, although Brian got on better... All other adverbs use 'more' and 'most': The boss also preferred Brian because he worked more efficiently. 2. 'As... as ...' You can also make comparisons using 'as + adjective / adverb + as...: Unfortunately, although Brian was as clever as Trevor, he was not as lucky as Trevor and as a result, he was not so happy as Trevor. On the other hand, Brian earned twice as much as Trevor.

04:20
British Council eTwinning project: Aprender a cooperar: somos tus profesores / we are your teachers. Burscough Village Primary School, England. Overview: This modern foreign language learning project involved three primary schools in Lancashire and Sunderland in England and Valladolid in Spain. By having students take on the role of language teachers, the essence of the project was to make language learning collaborative, fun and interactive. The project builds confidence in shyer pupils - supporting an inclusive classroom and improving students’ IT/digital skills. The majority of interaction took place over Skype and through the project eTwinning TwinSpace. Students set each other challenges, swapped riddles, recipes and stories about their home towns as well as recordings of them singing or acting out their favourite films. The project was awarded an eTwinning National Quality Label by the British Council for ‘primary school pupil-peer learning’ at the 11th annual eTwinning UK conference in 2016. Present perfect for experience | Johnny Grammar | Learn English | British Council

01:47
Test your English in Johnny's new quiz app for phones and tablets, on both iOS and Android! To download the "Johnny Grammar's Word Challenge" app for free, visit our LearnEnglish website: http://bit.ly/1tVk59X We use the present perfect to talk about experiences in the past up to the moment of speaking. The present perfect is "subject + auxiliary 'have' + past participle". We often shorten 'have/has' to ''ve/'s'. I've eaten in this restaurant many times. To make the negative we add 'not' between the auxiliary 'have' and the past participle. I haven't had it before. The question form is auxiliary 'have/has' + past participle. Have you tried this vegetable dish?
