A presentation given at the ACS CINF Meeting in Denver on March 22nd 2015 The authoring of a scientific publication can represent the culmination of many tens if not 100s of hours of data collection and analysis. The authoring and peer-review process itself often represents a major undertaking in terms of assembling the publication and passing through review. Considering the amount of work invested in the production of a scientific article it is therefore quite surprising that authors, post-publication, invest very little effort in communicating the value and potential impact of their article to the community. Social networking has clearly demonstrated the ability to self-market and drive attention. At the same time, the increasing volume of literature (over a million new articles are published every year), requires authors to take on a more direct role in ensuring their work gets read and cited. This requirement may grow with the emergence of a range of metrics at the article level, shifting attention away from where a researcher publishes to the performance of their individual articles. Therefore, a separate platform to facilitate social networking and other discovery tools to communicate the value of published science to the community would be of value. In parallel the possibility to enhance an article by linking to additional information (presentations, videos, blog posts etc) allows for enrichment of the article post-publication, a capability not available via the publishers platform. This presentation will provide a personal overview of the experiences of using the Kudos Platform and how it ultimately benefits my ability to communicate an integrated view of my research to the community.

Marketing is changing from an art to a science, creating challenges around staffing, agility, personalisation and return on investment. That’s the view expressed by Henk Jen Gerzee, VP eBusiness at Dutch scientific, technical, and medical publisher Elsevier, speaking to CMO.com after the Adobe Digital Marketing Symposium (http://www.cmo.com/articles/2015/12/2/adobe-amsterdam-symposium-dont-think-about-customers-content-and-creativity-in-isolation.html) in Amsterdam at the end of last year (Adobe is CMO.com’s parent company). “We have a few challenges. Marketing is changing from an art to a science, which has an impact on the skillset needed in the organisation,” he said. “We need more scientists, more developers in marketing. We need to implement new solutions faster. “Then how do we ensure that we have real-time personalised messages to our customers?” “And how are we going to increase our return on marketing investment? Kelley Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and founding director of the School’s Customer Interface Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for investigating how customers interact with new retail environments and technologies. There are! In fact, there are five types of articles: the tips article, the story article, the personal experience article, the facts article, and the recommendation article. Let’s take a look at each type. The tips article is of course an article that provides the readers with tips on a particular subject, such as how to quit smoking or how to design a website that converts well. The tips may be numbered, or laid out with bullets, and the title should include the number of tips that will be covered, such as ten tips to help you stop smoking now. The story article is exactly what it says. It is used to tell a story that is not necessarily the writers own personal experience. The story may be true or it may be fiction, but it will almost always be about somebody else. The trick is to keep the reader reading! The personal experience article will be about you and an experience that you have had that relates to your niche market in some way. For instance, ‘How I stopped Smoking’ would most likely be a personal experience article. The facts article is simply an article that informs, using proven facts for content. For instance, “What Smoking Does To Your Body” would be a facts article, because you have medical science and research to draw from to provide content and back that content up with scientific proof. Finally, there is the recommendation article. You must be very careful with a recommendation article. These are used to promote a product, but the content of the article must be informative in nature. For instance, if you are recommending a patch to help one stop smoking, the article cannot be ‘salesy’ in nature. It must inform. For example, you might discuss the problem of skin irritations with such patches, and use facts or your own personal experience to show that a particular patch doesn’t cause the irritation that others do. Many writers often combine different types of articles into one article. You can do this as long as you don’t run over 750 words in length. The important thing is to choose the article that you need to convey your message and get readers to visit your website. Today we’re going to talk about how computers understand speech and speak themselves. As computers play an increasing role in our daily lives there has been an growing demand for voice user interfaces, but speech is also terribly complicated. Vocabularies are diverse, sentence structures can often dictate the meaning of certain words, and computers also have to deal with accents, mispronunciations, and many common linguistic faux pas. The field of Natural Language Processing, or NLP, attempts to solve these problems, with a number of techniques we’ll discuss today. And even though our virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, Google Home, Bixby, and Cortana have come a long way from the first speech processing and synthesis models, there is still much room for improvement.
