MOOCS4D PANEL: Building Global Capacity in Digital Information Resources: Creation, Sharing, and Use
Building Global Capacity in Digital Information Resources: Creation, Sharing, and Use Kimberly Parker, Mary Ochs, Robert Cronin Moderator: Martha Brogran April 11th 2014 MOOCS4D: Potential at the Bottom of the Pyramid An International Invitational Conference University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) movement is greatly expanding capacity to meet the growing demand for educational and learning content worldwide. Many of the world's leading higher education institutions are attempting to enable access to high quality education for people around the world, including the disadvantaged and under-served. To date, however, the MOOC movement has paid insufficient attention to the reality of needs in the developing world. The MOOCs4D International Invitational Conference will bring together scholars, policy makers, program officers, administrators, and technologists from the education and international development sectors. The main goal is to better understand the dynamics surrounding this situation, and deliberate on solutions and action plans that will enable MOOCs to serve the development needs of resource-poor communities of learners -- those at the "bottom of the pyramid."

Internet of Things Optimization
The Internet of things lives! More and more devices are coming prepackaged with internet access that wouldn’t normally be. That includes everything from smart salt shakers to smart tabletops. And because these devices have a connection to the world wide web, they can communicate with the outside world and each other, sharing information and even learning from one another. In this video, I'll explain how to use a reinforcement learning technique called "Monte Carlo" to optimize electricity consumption and cooling demands for a smart home. Enjoy! In the previous section, we took our NFF Master project and we separated out the resource pool completely, and then we made sure that the master project uses the resource pool, and then that the three subprojects within the master project also used that same resource pool. In this way, we've truly got a common sharing of resources throughout the project. Now in this section what we're going to do is to look at the practicalities of working in this situation. Let's begin by supposing that I'm the project manager for the overall project and what I want to do now is to simply open the master project. Now when I try to open the master project, I immediately come across one of the key points that's necessary to understand when it comes to sharing resources. So if I click on File and then from the Open, I click on NFF Master; I see a message. Now you can already see the master project there, the Gantt Chart View in the background but what happens is that Project 2013 realizes that this particular project is using a resource pool and it gives me two choices. Now one choice, as you can see from the selected radio button there, is Open resource pool to see assignments across all sharer files. Now if I'm interested in looking at resourcing and in particular if I may want to look at resource leveling or resource overallocation, in order to really see what's going on it's going to be necessary for me to open the resource pool. In opening the resource pool, that will give me the ability to look at resource assignments throughout all of the projects that share that resource pool. Now, I did mention earlier on that it's not necessarily the case that that resource pool is only being used by the projects you've seen before. What if one of the other project managers in my company has been told to use the same resource pool? That other project manager may be using those resources and making assignments in those resources as well. So what it's really saying to me here is if you want to be able to look at resource assignments and know how your resource assignments are looking, you need to open the pool itself so that you can see assignments across all of the projects that are sharing that resource pool. Now as you'll see, when I come to open this project and the resource pool in a little while, it will actually be opened in Read Only mode so I won't be able to make changes to the resource pool as such. We're going to look at that a little bit later on. But it does enable me to see assignments. Now the second option says "Do not open other files." So in this case, I'm not going to be able to see the assignments. So in what sort of situation might I choose that option? Well, clearly I'm not going to choose that when I've got resource assignments to make or change because I won't be able to check the availability of resources even. But I might choose it in situations such as one where what I really want to do is to add a load of tasks to a project and I'm not doing resource assignments at the moment. I'm just basically entering the task, maybe even importing them from another source. I'm going to deal with resources later on. Oh-oh! No worries, you can get the transcripts for all our Project 2013 videos offered here on YouTube AND a free 3-hour video course for MS Project 2013. Sharing Resources
Situation: Two or more activities or moves require the use of the same resource to perform the activity. Example: Jobs coming into a print shop are loaded into one of two different printing machines (Print 1 and Print 2) depending on the type of job it is. Both machines require the use of an operator to load and start the machine which takes N(2,.8) minutes to complete. The model used for this example, as well as all of the modeling "how-to" examples, can be found in the ProModel Solutions Café (http://www.promodel.com/solutionscafe/howto/). How I Learned to Paint Reborns... Sharing and Reviewing Resources
I've been asked the question how I learned to paint reborns and I wanted to share some information on the resources I used to paint. The first course I purchased was the Reborn A-to-Z Course (www.rebornatozcourse.com) by Shaylen Maxwell of Reborn Sweet and then I took a class at the Rose Doll Show. I paint with Che'Air dry paints and those paints are found at www.reborningpaints.com and Cher Simnett who makes the paints has an online community and message board where you can get free tutorials. That link is reborningartists.proboards.com. The final resource that I have used from time to time is www.customdollbaby.com and she has some great tutorials. Bountiful Baby also has free tutorials on their website and a great forum for artists to exchange ideas. I hope this helps someone! :) xoxo

Adaptive Interaction Techniques for Sharing Design Resources
December 7, 2007 lecture by Brian Lee for the Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (CS 547). Today's designers generate content both on paper and online. Designers spread their work over physical and digital media, each of which has powerful, but distinct, sets of affordances. Recent work suggests that augmented paper interfaces can marry the ubiquity of paper interactions with the ease of search, annotation, and presentation afforded by digital representation. This dissertation examines novel ways to support and augment the practice of design through sharing and reappropriation of digitally captured design content. Labor Markets and Minimum Wage: Crash Course Economics #28
How much should you get paid for your job? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Your skill set, the demand for the skills you have, and what other people are getting paid around you all factor in. In a lot of ways, labor markets work on supply and demand, just like many of the markets we talk about in Crash Course Econ. But, again, there aren't a lot of pure, true markets in the world. There are all kinds of oddities and regulations that change the way labor markets work. One common (and kind of controversial one) is the minimum wage. The minimum wage has potential upsides and downsides, and we'll take a look at the various arguments for an against it. Crash Course is on Patreon! ISO 15926-based data integration platform - data translator (version 2)
Effective data sharing is an important issue for diverse stakeholders who participate in design, manufacture, and construction phases in the process plant industry. For process plant owners and operators, upstream lifecycle data should be integrated and handed over properly. ISO 15926 is an international standard to provide information resources required for sharing and integrating process plant data. We presented a data integration platform that integrates ISO 15926-based plant design, manufacture, and construction data. For this, ISO 15926 reference data (classes, properties, and templates) were defined to provide information resources which cover plant design, manufacture, and construction data. We then designed a data translator that converts ISO 15926-based plant design, manufacture, and construction data into an intermediate XML file. According to the system design, we implemented a prototype system and performed experiments of translating plant data into an XML file with the system and visualizing the converted XML file with a visualizer. Rethinking Research Data | Kristin Briney | TEDxUWMilwaukee
The United States spends billions of dollars every year to publicly support research that has resulted in critical innovations and new technologies. Unfortunately, the outcome of this work, published articles, only provides the story of the research and not the actual research itself. This often results in the publication of irreproducible studies or even falsified findings, and it requires significant resources to discern the good research from the bad. There is way to improve this process, however, and that is to publish both the article and the data supporting the research. Shared data helps researchers identify irreproducible results. Additionally, shared data can be reused in new ways to generate new innovations and technologies. We need researchers to “React Differently” with respect to their data to make the research process more efficient, transparent, and accountable to the public that funds them. Kristin Briney is a Data Services Librarian at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has a PhD in physical chemistry, a Masters in library and information studies, and currently works to help researchers manage their data better. She is the author of “Data Management for Researchers” and regular blogs about data best practices at dataabinitio.com. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

A Glimpse of the ILL Yeti: Stalking the Big, Big Picture of System-wide Collection Sharing
Most libraries belong to multiple resource sharing arrangements and use several different fulfillment systems, so getting a complete picture of collection sharing activity has become like trying to get a snapshot of Bigfoot. In this webinar recording, Program Officer Dennis Massie gives an overview of how OCLC Research is analyzing five years' worth of collection sharing activity by the eleven members of the Borrow Direct consortium to provide an overview of the borrowing and lending patterns of one very active and innovative group. Questions addressed by the study included: Is overall sharing volume going up or down? How is utilization of the various resource sharing models and venues evolving? Is there any truth to the rumor that the proliferation of e-resources in libraries is actually making interlibrary loan obsolete? This webinar recording will be of interest to anyone working with collections, e-resources, resource sharing, or data analysis. For more information about this webinar, see http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2015/05-05.html.

SFD061 Are You Ready to Quit Your Job for Your Fashion Startup Business?
You have had this full time corporate fashion job for several years. You’re comfortable where you're at, with benefits, income and stability. But you also have this “passion project” that you started as a creative outlet and it has turned into a fashion startup business. You spend all your free time designing, making, creating and problem solving in your craft. But now you’re stuck. This fashion startup business has begun to flourish, your process has streamlined and your passion has grown and yet you’re still working your 9-5 fashion job. Figuring out where to go from here can be rather unnerving. This is exactly what Jackie Ayres from Dyetology did. I am so excited to share with you how she QUIT HER DAY JOB FOR HER FASHION STARTUP BUSINESS and made it work. In the interview (Which I know you’ll love) we cover: The journey to finding your passion in the fashion industry Turning your passion project into a profitable fashion business Finding the energy to “do it all” when running your fashion startup Why you should allow yourself to dream How she used her corporate job to fund her fashion startup business Feeling at peace with quitting your corporate fashion job How to leave corporate life and move into entrepreneurship Her thoughts on “doing the research” for yourself Finding a mentor or support group established in the fashion industry Why you have to ask yourself “do you love it” because no one else will Jackie Ayres from Dyetology hand dyes textiles that she turns into scarves, shawls, skirts and tops. She spent 3 years organically growing her startup fashion business all while raising her son and working her full time corporate fashion job. Using this overlapping time to really learn what she liked about the hand dying industry and teaching herself what was needed to make it into a profitable business. Like you, Jackie dreamed about her startup while working her corporate full time job. She spent 14 years designing in the corporate world honing her talents and learning form the best in the industry. While climbing the corporate ladder she felt like her job was void of the kind of creative outlet that would leave her feeling passionate. So she started hand dyeing textiles out of her home and soon learned this was a passion project she wanted to turn into a full time career. More than just a designer - how she would love to help you! She loves to be transparent with her customers, followers and any one who asks for her advice about how she got to this point in her career that she is at. As long has you have the drive and have done the background research she is more than willing to help answer any questions you have about this scary transition from corporate life to small business owner. She hopes to break down some of the barriers that most of us face in the fashion industry when it comes to sharing helpful information.
