MOOCS4D PANEL: Building Global Capacity in Digital Information Resources: Creation, Sharing, and Use

01:12:53
Building Global Capacity in Digital Information Resources: Creation, Sharing, and Use Kimberly Parker, Mary Ochs, Robert Cronin Moderator: Martha Brogran April 11th 2014 MOOCS4D: Potential at the Bottom of the Pyramid An International Invitational Conference University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) movement is greatly expanding capacity to meet the growing demand for educational and learning content worldwide. Many of the world's leading higher education institutions are attempting to enable access to high quality education for people around the world, including the disadvantaged and under-served. To date, however, the MOOC movement has paid insufficient attention to the reality of needs in the developing world. The MOOCs4D International Invitational Conference will bring together scholars, policy makers, program officers, administrators, and technologists from the education and international development sectors. The main goal is to better understand the dynamics surrounding this situation, and deliberate on solutions and action plans that will enable MOOCs to serve the development needs of resource-poor communities of learners -- those at the "bottom of the pyramid."

Situation: Two or more activities or moves require the use of the same resource to perform the activity. Example: Jobs coming into a print shop are loaded into one of two different printing machines (Print 1 and Print 2) depending on the type of job it is. Both machines require the use of an operator to load and start the machine which takes N(2,.8) minutes to complete. The model used for this example, as well as all of the modeling "how-to" examples, can be found in the ProModel Solutions Café (http://www.promodel.com/solutionscafe/howto/). In the previous section, we took our NFF Master project and we separated out the resource pool completely, and then we made sure that the master project uses the resource pool, and then that the three subprojects within the master project also used that same resource pool. In this way, we've truly got a common sharing of resources throughout the project. Now in this section what we're going to do is to look at the practicalities of working in this situation. Let's begin by supposing that I'm the project manager for the overall project and what I want to do now is to simply open the master project. Now when I try to open the master project, I immediately come across one of the key points that's necessary to understand when it comes to sharing resources. So if I click on File and then from the Open, I click on NFF Master I see a message. Now you can already see the master project there, the Gantt Chart View in the background but what happens is that Project 2013 realizes that this particular project is using a resource pool and it gives me two choices. Now one choice, as you can see from the selected radio button there, is Open resource pool to see assignments across all sharer files. Now if I'm interested in looking at resourcing and in particular if I may want to look at resource leveling or resource overallocation, in order to really see what's going on it's going to be necessary for me to open the resource pool. In opening the resource pool, that will give me the ability to look at resource assignments throughout all of the projects that share that resource pool. Now, I did mention earlier on that it's not necessarily the case that that resource pool is only being used by the projects you've seen before. What if one of the other project managers in my company has been told to use the same resource pool? That other project manager may be using those resources and making assignments in those resources as well. So what it's really saying to me here is if you want to be able to look at resource assignments and know how your resource assignments are looking, you need to open the pool itself so that you can see assignments across all of the projects that are sharing that resource pool. Now as you'll see, when I come to open this project and the resource pool in a little while, it will actually be opened in Read Only mode so I won't be able to make changes to the resource pool as such. We're going to look at that a little bit later on. But it does enable me to see assignments. Now the second option says "Do not open other files." So in this case, I'm not going to be able to see the assignments. So in what sort of situation might I choose that option? Well, clearly I'm not going to choose that when I've got resource assignments to make or change because I won't be able to check the availability of resources even. But I might choose it in situations such as one where what I really want to do is to add a load of tasks to a project and I'm not doing resource assignments at the moment. I'm just basically entering the task, maybe even importing them from another source. I'm going to deal with resources later on. Oh-oh! We couldn't fit the entire video transcription here - YouTube only allows 5000 characters. No worries, you can get the transcripts for all our Project 2013 videos offered here on YouTube AND a free 3-hour video course for MS Project 2013. Chapter 8: Sharing Resources

11:17
Rather than deploying a dedicated file server, many small businesses use shared folders hosted off workstations as a method of sharing documents. In this practice, you configure Windows 7 to share data using the built-in HomeGroup functionality as well as sharing through the creation of dedicated shared folders. Configuring Libraries and HomeGroup Settings In this exercise, you create a new library and then share it. You also modify the HomeGroup password from the one created during setup to one that is easier for other users of the HomeGroup to remember. Advanced Folder Sharing In this exercise, you share a folder using the Create A Shared Folder Wizard. You would use this method to share a folder when you connect your computer to a Domain network. When you connect your computer to a domain network, you cannot use the HomeGroup functionality of Windows 7, though it is possible to share libraries directly.

How I Learned to Paint Reborns... Sharing and Reviewing Resources

13:19
I've been asked the question how I learned to paint reborns and I wanted to share some information on the resources I used to paint. The first course I purchased was the Reborn A-to-Z Course (www.rebornatozcourse.com) by Shaylen Maxwell of Reborn Sweet and then I took a class at the Rose Doll Show. I paint with Che'Air dry paints and those paints are found at www.reborningpaints.com and Cher Simnett who makes the paints has an online community and message board where you can get free tutorials. That link is reborningartists.proboards.com. The final resource that I have used from time to time is www.customdollbaby.com and she has some great tutorials. Bountiful Baby also has free tutorials on their website and a great forum for artists to exchange ideas. I hope this helps someone! :) xoxo

Adaptive Interaction Techniques for Sharing Design Resources

58:14
December 7, 2007 lecture by Brian Lee for the Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (CS 547). Today's designers generate content both on paper and online. Designers spread their work over physical and digital media, each of which has powerful, but distinct, sets of affordances. Recent work suggests that augmented paper interfaces can marry the ubiquity of paper interactions with the ease of search, annotation, and presentation afforded by digital representation. This dissertation examines novel ways to support and augment the practice of design through sharing and reappropriation of digitally captured design content. In this section we’re going to start to look at Resources. Resources include the people involved in a project, they include equipment and materials used, and various other types of resource, notably cost associated with a project. When you look at a Gantt Chart such as this one you’re primarily looking at tasks. The table on the left gives information about the tasks and the chart on the right gives a pictorial, a graphical representation of the scheduling of the tasks, their durations, dependencies, and so on. Now tasks and resources are basically the two building blocks of a project in Microsoft Project 2016. And we link the two together using what are called Assignments or Resource Assignments. In this section we’re going to look at Resources and in the next section we’re going to look at Resource Assignments. One thing that you may have noticed when we were using the View Tab before is that the first two groups on the left are Task Views and Resource Views. And largely speaking when we’re looking at a project we tend to be looking at tasks or at resources. But there are many views that enable us to look at both. And in particular to look at the relationship between them. Usually so far when we’ve been looking at tasks we’ve used Gantt Chart View. And for most people that is the view that they use most of the time. Of the Resource Views a very popular view is Resource Sheet View. And that’s the one that we’re going to look at first. So if I click on Resource Sheet, this spreadsheet gives us information about all of the resources in our project. And at the moment as you can see we have no resources in our project. Now we’re going to start to add some resources in just a moment. But before we do just look down at the right hand end of the Status Bar. Two of the main icons there are on the left here the button to take us to Gantt Chart View and three to the right, the one that looks just like a spreadsheet, that one takes us back to Resource Sheet View. So you’ll probably get used to switching between those two. The two views between them are also very commonly used. Task Usage which basically lists tasks and shows which resources are used in a task. And at the moment we have no resources so there’s nothing being used. And the next one is Team Planner View which can enable us to look at how the work on a project is distributed between a team. Now at the moment we have no team because we have no resources to put into a team. So let’s go back to Resource Sheet View. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.

The Philippine Clearing House Mechanism is a website that provides relevant information on the Convention on Biological Diversity in the country. It is established as part of the Philippine commitment to the CBD to promote and facilitate technical and scientific cooperation among the various stakeholders on biodiversity in the country. It contains national biodiversity-related information that is required to assist policy makers and interested stakeholders to meet obligations under the Convention and to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity. It also aims to facilitate the sharing of data and information between and among various stakeholders on biodiversity in the Philippines. Thus, regular inflow of information from partners and stakeholders is necessary to maintain the content of the PCHM. It operates through an information technology-based network called the BIOWEB.PH established through a Memorandum of Agreement among different biodiversity partners. Sharing of information is done through a web-based information system. To read more, click: http://www.chm.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=399&Itemid=53

Editage Insights - Resources for authors and journals

02:51
Over the years, while helping authors get published, we realized that researchers have a lot of questions about publication and would like someone to guide them through the publication process. Similarly, journal editors always want to reach out to authors and share their expectations or explain best publication practices. We realized that there was a distinct gap—between authors and journals—and that it was necessary to bridge this gap through a common platform. This thought led us to create Editage insights—a comprehensive learning and knowledge sharing platform that provides learning resources and information about all aspects of publishing. Watch this video to know more about how Editage Insights helps bring researchers and publication professionals across the globe together under one roof by helping bridge the gap between them.
