That's How You Can Confuse Your Math Teacher

09:13
Bright Side is going to teach you a mathematical trick which requires no special preparation. This trick will confuse your math teacher and impress your friends. You’re going to fall in love with math after this even if you haven't been a fan of it before. TIMESTAMPS The art of Math 0:58 The trick 2:13 The trick explained 5:46 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Albert Einstein said that “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” In Math, 2 plus 2 always equals 4. Or does it? -Be amazed as you see magic happening in front of you. You’ll see how a number picked at random turns into a number previously saved in a secret folder. -Pick any five-digit number. You take your secret five-digit number and lose the first digit, then add 2 to the last digit. Now ask one of your friends or even your teacher to give you any number. Next, your task is to name a number, which will give 9999 if you add it to the previous number. Then, again, it is your friends’ turn to pick the four digits. Once again, you name the next number. Remember it has to give us 9999 in the end. Now let us put all the numbers together. There you go – we’ve got the number it all started with. The Map of Mathematics

11:06
The entire field of mathematics summarised in a single map! This shows how pure mathematics and applied mathematics relate to each other and all of the sub-topics they are made from. If you would like to buy a poster of this map, they are available here: North America: https://store.dftba.com/products/map-of-mathematics-poster Everywhere else: http://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/25095968-the-map-of-mathematics I have also made a version available for educational use which you can find here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/32264483720/in/dateposted-public/ To err is to human, and I human a lot. I always try my best to be as correct as possible, but unfortunately I make mistakes. This is the errata where I correct my silly mistakes. My goal is to one day do a video with no errors! 1. The number one is not a prime number. The definition of a prime number is a number can be divided evenly only by 1, or itself. And it must be a whole number GREATER than 1. (This last bit is the bit I forgot). 2. In the trigonometry section I drew cos(theta) = opposite / adjacent. This is the kind of thing you learn in high school and guess what. I got it wrong! Dummy. It should be cos(theta) = adjacent / hypotenuse. 3. My drawing of dice is slightly wrong. Most dice have their opposite sides adding up to 7, so when I drew 3 and 4 next to each other that is incorrect. 4. I said that the Gödel Incompleteness Theorems implied that mathematics is made up by humans, but that is wrong, just ignore that statement. I have learned more about it now, here is a good video explaining it: https://youtu.be/O4ndIDcDSGc 5. In the animation about imaginary numbers I drew the real axis as vertical and the imaginary axis as horizontal which is opposite to the conventional way it is done. Thanks so much to my supporters on Patreon. I hope to make money from my videos one day, but I’m not there yet! The Mathematics of Psychiatry | Lawrence Amsel | TEDxHunterCCS

15:45
How do the Mathematics of Game Theory and Psychiatry work together? Behavioral Economics has some of the answers. Larry did his undergraduate studies and some graduate work in mathematics, but then switched direction and became a psychiatrist. He has been on the psychiatry faculty of the medical school at Columbia University for over twenty years both as a clinical practitioner and as a researcher. His early research was on suicide prevention which got him very interested in the applications of Decision Science and Game Theory to psychiatry. He organized the first American Psychiatric Association symposium on Game Theory and psychiatry, and has published articles and presented posters on Game Theory modeling of suicide, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Eating Disorders. More recently Larry has been collaborating with the Child Psychiatric Epidemiology Group (CPEG) as Director of Mathematical Psychiatry, creating innovative collaborations involving Decision Science as applied to the psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents. Why Uber Is A Scam - Math Explains

05:37
Ok so I was looking at this graph put on Uber’s website today and thought it looked too good to be true. How amazing that Uber drivers make more than any other type of driver. But I knew from my own experience as a rider that Uber didn’t cost that much. In fact, Uber is pretty cheap if you’re a passenger. Sooooo…. how can uber be so cheap, and yet the drivers make so much money??? Now Uber has cut pay to drivers in Detroit to 24cents a mile , but we’re going to stick to the 90c for now. Uber takes 20% of the total fare from the driver for older drivers. Newer drivers get 25% taken. So we’re down to 67.5c per mile. Then you have to deduct tax: In some LA County's, sales tax is as high as 10%, and Uber doesn’t withold taxes for you. The drives are responsible for keeping this money aside to pay the tax department in April. So with the 10% deducted, we’re down to (just over 60 cents) 60.75c Now we need to factor in depreciation of the car. A car is an asset like anything else, and will eventually wear out and you’ll have to buy a new one. Every mile you drive decreases the value of your car and brings you that much closer to needing a new one. This is a big problem if you drive for a living, you’re going to need to buy a new car every two or three years and the cost of a new car is significant. The IRS estimates vehicle cost to drive a vehicle for work at $0.54 a mile . Broken down into Fuel costs @ an average of 12c per mile Depreciation at $0.24c per mile. Repairs, tyres, & maintainence at 9c per mile Insurance, licence, registration, finance, fees - average out to around 9c per mile So with 54c depreciation, repairs, and fuel accounted for, we’re down to just over 6c per mile that actually goes into your hands of drivers. Given that Uber also asks its drivers to buy things like bottles of water, gum, and chargers for it’s passengers, we can say for certain that driving for Uber pays well below minimum wage or even worse, costing drivers money (as is seen directly in this actual fare uber charged one of it’s drivers). So given the math is so bad, why does anyone drive for Uber? Here’s an example of a post an Uber driver posted - he was $400 behind on the rent, and needed to make up some quick cash. In a way, uber is kind of like a loans scheme. Now for some people in desperate circumstances, what Uber’s offering might be an acceptable deal. But for most people, driving for Uber is a waste of time. I wish Uber would be more honest with people. By our calculations, the amount you’re making as an uber driver is nowhere near $19 per hour. If you drive 30 miles per hour at 6.75c per hour, you’re only making $2.00 per mile - by far the worst choice of any transportation job. This number is supported by Not Cool Uber, who have tracked hourly earnings to be around $2.89 and, after vehicle fees are taken into account, $0. Now – I’m not against car pooling. We all need transport, and I know I am a frequent user of Uber & Lyft. But I think that Uber is going about it in an unethical way, which makes me unethical for supporting them as a customer. Uber could easily fix this situation : by reducing their commission, by making rates more reasonable, by giving riders the option to Tip their drivers, or just by being transparent. But that would mean admitting that they’ve generated significant revenue from effectively exploiting their drivers. So the truth is, Uber benefits from maintaining this status quo. Uber is currently reported to be making $10 billion in revenue per year - and that money has to come from someone. Just don’t let that someone be you. Mathematics is NOT the "language of nature"

15:40
#mathematics #skepticism #language In this Vlog I discuss mathematics and how it is often misrepresented or misunderstood by laypeople and even scientists, who like to attribute magical or mystical properties to mathematics. I use the example of how Deepak Chopra uses Pi (aka Archimedes' constant) to support his argument that there must be some unexplained infinite force behind natural things*. I use this example because I used to believe exactly the same, and only after challenging this belief I realised how very little of mathematics I actually knew and I should hit the books in order to learn more (instead of making up my own uneducated guesses about what something like Pi is). This video is done with the intent to encourage people to recognise their limitations, be humble about them and search for knowledge instead of just making up explanations that might be completely false only because they suit their preconceived notions of things. In this age where we want to be right no matter what and are scared of showing any weakness, it might be difficult to do so; but we should not let our insecurities get the best of us, we should be inspired by our ignorance and use that to motivate ourselves to seek knowledge and indulge our curiosity. Some of the things I say in this video (especially regarding language and DNA) are the result of years of studying these topics through books, articles, lectures and documentaries (especially true crime docos like Forensic Files, FBI Files and The New Detectives), so I am not able reference every single source I use to build my argument. Below are some of the main sources I used to learn about these things, as well as links to the Wikipedia (aka dummy guide) explaining some of the terms used in this video (for those unfamiliar with them). How to Retire Early: The Shockingly Simple Math

03:43
Enroll in our Personal Finance Masterclass for just $10: https://www.videoschoolonline.com/YTFinance How to retire early - let's break down the steps to early retirement. Take a premium course at http://www.videoschoolonline.com/course-library/ This video shows you how to retire early with shockingly simple math. I've been a personal finance nerd for a while, and the idea of early retirement is really interesting. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Money Mustache who wrote a great article on the shockingly simple math behind early retirement. Since I make videos, I wanted to take his theories and break them down into a digestible video. I hope you enjoy! And like I say in the video, please like and share this video, then leave a comment. What do you think? Is this amazing or crazy? What is your savings rate? What other personal finance questions do you have? I credit a lot of this work/theory to Mr Money Mustache. Read his full article about it here (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-simple-math-behind-early-retirement/). Also, check out this cool early retirement calculator (https://networthify.com/calculator/earlyretirement?income=50000&initialBalance=0&expenses=17000&annualPct=5&withdrawalRate=4) Script: Hi, my name is Phil. I’m a video creator and online instructor. I’m also a personal finance nerd. Because of that, I want to create a series of videos that breaks down some of the most mystifying topics that plague our society. In a world where people’s finances are typically locked away and not-talked about, I believe opening up the gates of financial conversation will help everyone live a better and smarter life. In this first video, I want to explain the shockingly simple math behind early retirement - thanks to one of my biggest heroes, Mr Money Mustache. While the ability to retire may seem like a distant and unreachable goal for many, the premise comes down to one thing. You need to invest money so that it earns more money. This could be investing in stocks or bonds, real estate, or any other of investment vehicles. As soon as your investments earn enough money for you to live on each year, you are able to retire. Let’s break it down further to know when you can retire. The most important concept is knowing your savings rate, basically how much you make minus your expenses. If you spend 100% of your income, you will never retire… because you will never be able to invest any money that earns money for retirement. If you spend 0% of your income, you can retire right now… because somehow you are living without needing to make any more money. Between 0% and 100% are a number of savings rates that correlate with the years it will take to retire. For this, let’s assume your annual investment return is 5% (which is conservatively low) and your withdrawal rate is 4%… meaning you spend 4% of your net worth each year. For example, if you have a $1,000,000 net worth, and you live on $40,000. If your savings rate is 10%, you will be able to safely retire after 51.4 years. Safely, meaning you will never run out of money. If your savings rate is 25%, you can retire in 31.9 years. 50%, you can retire in 16.6 years. And if you can somehow save 75% of your income, you can retire in 7.1 years. Now getting to that savings rate might not be easy in our world of societal pressures, keeping up with the Joneses, and bad habits. But you can get closer by making smart decisions, avoiding debt, and living simply. The key take away is… Cutting your spending rate is way more powerful than increasing your income because no matter how much money you make, decreasing your spending will speed up the process. A note, The math behind early retirement works if you are working a minimum wage job or a 7-figure CEO salary. It’s all about the savings rate. So if you want to retire in 10 years, the math tells us that you need to save 66% of your income. Now there is a lot that I didn’t talk about - like how to invest, and how to cut expenses to get to a high savings rate. Those will come in a future video. For now, get excited about the honest truth about retirement (and early retirement at that!)! Let me know what you think in the comments below? Is this exciting or bogus? Until next time… start being money smart. Please subscribe to the channel and leave a comment below! 21 COOL SCHOOL HACKS TO MAKE YOU SAY WOW

12:29
COOL SCHOOL HACKS Can you believe it's fall already? Goodness. My eldest niece has just started elementary school and I've been eyeing all the colorful back-to-school supplies. Since we love making rainbow crafts, I thought it would be fun to make our own DIY Rainbow Marker. And guess what? It took less than a minute to make. And then- tada! We swiped this marker to create a whole spectrum of lovely colors! How to Make a DIY Rainbow Marker Ok. So, let's make our rainbow marker... in less than a minute. Drum roll please. Grab a yellow marker. Then, grab purple and green highlighter markers. (Actually, you can use any colors you want!) Then, color in your yellow marker as so, making sure to color all the way around the tip. Now drag your yellow marker over a sheet of paper. A rainbow appears! And that's it! Of course, rainbow making capabilities will NOT be permanent. But this neat "Wow" activity for kids will certainly brighten up everyone's day! Happy crafting, my friends!
