Building a Tabular Data Warehouses in SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2012

11:22
Tabular models are a simple but high performance alternative to building OLAP cube based Data Warehouses. This video demonstrates how a simple Tabular Data Warehouse can be built in about 5 minutes. Tabular models are a new feature in SQL Server 2012. They offer the opportunity to simplify the design, building and deployment of simple Data Warehouses. The inclusion of Columnar Indexes and the DAX language enables the rapid slicing and dicing of large data sets. I also have a comprehensive 60 minute T-SQL course available at Udemy : https://www.udemy.com/t-sql-for-data-analysts/?couponCode=ANALYTICS50%25OFF

Analysis Services and MDX Essentials with Paul Turley

01:01:25
SQL Server Analysis Services is the foundation of Microsoft’s Business Intelligence platform. SSAS multidimensional, originally called OLAP services, has been part of the SQL Server family since 1998 and is now the core technology for newer in-memory analytics tools like Power Pivot and SSAS Tabular. By using SSAS cubes and models effectively, you can query and analyze large volumes of data with complex calculations very quickly. In this session, you’ll learn to build a basic semantic model and use MDX (multi dimensional expressions) to write queries for reporting and self-service browsing. I’ll share some real-world examples of reporting tools that utilize SSAS & MDX including Excel, SSRS and Datazen, Microsoft’s new mobile dashboard solution.

DirectQuery in Analysis Services: Best practices, performance, use cases - BRK3245

01:15:18
DirectQuery is a feature of Analysis Services that transforms a Tabular model in a semantic layer on top of a relational database, transforming any MDX or DAX query in a real-time request to the underlying relational engine using the SQL language. This feature has been improved and optimized in the latest versions, including Azure Analysis Services, extending the support to relational databases other than SQL Server, and dramatically improving its performance. Learn what are the features of DirectQuery, how to implement best practices in order to obtain the best results, and what are typical use cases where DirectQuery should be considered as an alternative to the in-memory engine embedded in Analysis Services.

What's New in SQL Server 2012 (Part 7 of 13)—What's New in the Tabular Model

01:19:42
lthough Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services has tremendous capabilities for building analytic (OLAP) databases, the learning curve can intimidate developers. The new tabular model in Analysis Services provides developers with some of the same general features as the regular multidimensional capabilities of OLAP, but in a somewhat simplified user interface. In this webcast, we create an analytic database by using the tabular model in Microsoft Visual Studio (SQL Server Data Tools), pointing to a relational database as the source. Because there's still a learning curve with the tabular model, we split this up into two parts. This webcast focuses on the basics of the tabular model (because it's new to many people), and in the second part, we look at some of the more detailed features. If you need a "first look" at what the tabular model offers, this webcast is for you. Presented By: Kevin S.
