Now look there are two types of people in this world, those that organize things and the rest of us are just kind of do what they say but if you think you're good with people and you like organizing things maybe human resources could be a career for you. We're here at the Department of Mines to find out what it's all about. You hear the term human resources all the time but it's a pretty obscure and confusing job title. All i know is that it involves dealing with lots of people which is why I'm here at one of the biggest people machines in WA, the Department of Mines and Petroleum to find out exactly what a human resources officer does. Great to meet you Alyce. Well let's start with everything, I need to know if you're working in Human Resources what do you do? So pretty much we work with the employees right through from application to retirement and that could be anything from looking after their safety to training to providing wellness programs or diversity events. So you follow someone's career basically from the beginning right through the end. Yeah while they're in that specific organization. Sure and ok well let's start at the beginning how you came to be in the job. What was your particular path? Where did you study how are you here today? I studied the ECU I studied a bachelor of business and I did a major in human resource management and from that I engaged in lots of different work experience, internship placements I put my name on the templates here at this department and they asked me to come back and work on my initial project. Okay, talk me through a day a typical day of yours when you turn up what do you get up to? First thing I do is look at my emails to make sure there's no employees that are concerned about any issues. That's the first thing you need to get to you need to reply to them quickly. I also because I'm the wellness coordinator I do a lot of events and presentations so i might be one day I might be booking in a presentation I'm checking that staff have RSVP'd properly that kind of thing. We also organize occupational safety and health inductions for new staff so i might be sending out invites. Okay, it's time for you to give us the edge. Can you do that? Absolutely question number one, just quickly from school to what you do now what's the process? Definitely finish high school and an excellent way to increase your opportunities then enroll in either a human resource management course at there's a number of different institutions that offer it or you could do a degree in business and get a a major in human resources or even a psychology degree. Question 2 if I want to be really successful in human resources what characteristics do i need? Definitely a good people person, you need to love working with people, also excellent communication skills that's a big one you need to always be talking with people and also being able to say the same thing to everybody being consistent with your advice to give throughout the organization. And question number three, if you could have done one thing differently but still end up exactly where you are today what would you have done there? Good question i'm quite happy with the path I took but I will say definitely being a little bit more comfortable about asking questions and seeking advice. Well Alyce, thank you so much for talking me through it I now know what it means to work in human resources. Thank you very much it's been really fun. Well there you go that's just the tip of the iceberg of what it means to work in human resources. If you want to get involved you want more info you gotta get onto https://studentedge.org and don't forget if you really keen about it get out there network and meet people.

Human Resource Management in Organizations

15:59
Human resource management is designing formal systems in an organization to manage human talent for accomplishing organizational goals. In this course, we will answer the question, what is human resource management? By definition, Human resource management comprise the formal systems designed to manage people in an organization. Managing people ultimately has to do with the decisions these leaders make from among the wide range of possible choices on the formal policies, practices, and methods for managing employees. Which human resource role dominates or whether all three roles are performed, depends on what management wants HR to do and what competencies the HR staff members possess. The opportunity for the HR department to adopt a strategic role exists in many firms. Overall, instead of just understanding HR issues and concerns, HR staff should have a broad business focus to help companies reach their strategic goals. Human resource management challenges are often driven by competitive factors that exist in an industry and that require a response of positive practices to enable the organization to remain competitive. Let’s explore some of these challenges. With challenges come significant opportunities for human resource management to impact effective and effective strategic outcomes for an organization. The combination of observable and measurable knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes that contribute to enhanced employee performance and ultimately result in human resource success. Certifying knowledge and competency is a trend in many professions, and HR illustrates the importance of certification by making many types available. Given that some people enter HR jobs with limited formal HR training, certifications help both individuals and their employers ensure that appropriate HR practices are implemented to improve the performance of their organizations.

HR Basics: Equal Employment Opportunity

08:09
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we define equal employment opportunity, exploring the law, discrimination in the workplace and the agencies responsible for preventing it. Equal employment opportunity (EEO) is the term used to describe laws, regulations, and processes related to fair treatment of employees. Basing employment decisions on factors other than worker qualifications is generally illegal in the United States. The costs of litigation, penalties, and harm to the company’s reputation can be substantial when violations occur. Discrimination means treating people differently. We choose to treat people differently every day. Discrimination becomes problematic when people are not treated fairly because of characteristics they possess that have nothing to do with their ability to perform a particular job. In this course, we will cover EEO laws, concepts of discrimination and the regulatory agencies responsible for antidiscrimination in employment. Equal employment opportunity means that employment decisions must be made on the basis of job requirements and worker qualifications. To begin, lets focus primarily on regulations in the form of equal employment opportunity (EEO) laws and other regulations related to fair treatment of employees. Equal Employment Opportunity laws prohibit specific types of job discrimination in the workplace. Employment discrimination is a form of discrimination based on protected characteristics by employers. Unlawful discrimination occurs when those decisions are made based on protected characteristics, which are individual attributes such as race, age, sex, disability, or religion that are protected under EEO laws and regulations. A protected class is a group of people with a common characteristic who are legally protected from employment discrimination on the basis of that characteristic. These traits are called “protected characteristics” and referred to as “protected classes.” The two main enforcement bodies for EEO are the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) (in particular, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs [OFCCP]). The EEOC is responsible for developing guidelines and overseeing compliance with most of the antidiscrimination laws. The OFCCP is responsible for the same activities relative to executive orders. Equal employment opportunity (EEO) is employment that is not affected by illegal discrimination. It is a broad-reaching concept that essentially requires employers to make status-blind employment decisions. Status-blind decisions are made without regard to individuals’ personal characteristics (e.g., age, sex, race).

HR Basics: Human Resource Policy

06:54
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore developing and managing human resource policies, creating an effective employee handbook. Human resource policy serve as guidelines and standards on the approach an organization intends to adopt in managing its people. Human resource policies state the intent of the organization and represent specific guidelines on various matters concerning employment. A good HR policy provides generalized guidance on the approach adopted by the organization, and therefore its employees, concerning various aspects of employment. Policies serve as a reference point when decisions are being made about an organization's workforce. In this course we will explore strategies for the successful development and management of your human resource policies. Employee policy begins with careful development of the right policies for your organization. Then, strong management of your policy ensures consistency in people management from implementation through administration of your policy. When developed and managed appropriately, human resource policy preempts misunderstandings between employees and employers about their rights and obligations in the workplace.

Human Resources Careers - Being an HR Executive with a Law Degree

05:32
https://jdcareersoutthere.com/alternative-careers-for-lawyers-jd-refugee/ Human resources careers make great jobs you can do with a law degree. Being an HR executive is explained in this career video by lawyer, HR executive and EEO officer Kristine Pizzo of New York. After establishing her career in human resources by working for the US Olympic Committee, Kristine went to law school, earned her law degree, and returned to the world of HR jobs as a human resources executive. In this JD Careers Out There video, Kristine and Marc Luber of JDCOT analyze HR jobs by discussing both the strategic and operational aspects of a human resources career. The overlapping skill sets and legal issues help to make human resources jobs appealing alternative careers for lawyers. Kristine shares examples of some of the different tasks that must be handled in human resources jobs, which include many labor and employment law issues. Thanks to those issues, much of the human resources job description will feel familiar to labor and employment lawyers. Between the labor and employment legal issues and the employee relations aspects of the HR job responsibilities, these roles make good law degree jobs for those who enjoy interacting with a lot of people on a regular basis - especially if you're a generalist like Kristine. The HR job description could be more specific: like just being focused on training programs or recruiting or benefits or EEO. If you're wondering what to do with a law degree, whether you're thinking of leaving law practice for alternative careers or you're currently in law school, you may want to explore human resources jobs. In the full version of this interview, Kristine tells us how to break into HR jobs. She essentially does a full HR job analysis: she describes a typical day as an HR executive, explains what skills and personality types best fit this path, and shares tips for how to succeed. You'll find the full JDCOT interview at: http://jdcareersoutthere.com/human-resources-executive-alternative-careers-for-lawyers/. Human Resources Basics - Positions

06:03
As you work with Human resources, you’ll decide how to structure your organization, using elements, such as departments, jobs, and positions. These are among the foundational elements that you’ll configure in Human resources. Individual employees are assigned to positions which are associated with jobs. Positions: Positions are an important element of the lower level of an organization hierarchy. A position is an individual instance of a job. For example, the position, “Sales manager (East),” is just one of the positions that is associated with the job, “Sales manager.” Positions exist in a department and are assigned to workers. Position creation and maintenance: - You can view a history of position-related system changes in an easy-to-access list page. - You can create reason codes that your users can select when they create or modify positions. - You can create personnel action types and assign a number sequence to personnel actions. - You can set up workflow so that position additions and changes can require approval. Position duration: Every position has a length of time that the position is effective. This length of time is referred to as duration. For example, summer positions might have duration of May 1, 2017 until August 31, 2017. Worker assignments: When you assign a worker to a position, you fill that position. You can assign workers to multiple positions, but only one worker can be assigned to a position at the same time. Reporting relationships: Positions are important elements of the lower level of an organization hierarchy. In the Position form, you can specify the position that a position reports to. When you assign a worker to a position that reports to another position, you create a reporting relationship between the workers who are assigned to the two positions. For example, position “Accountant-A” reports to position “Accounting Supervisor”. Kim Akers is assigned to position “Accounting Supervisor” and Sanjay Patel is assigned to position “Accountant-A”. This means that Sanjay Patel reports to Kim Akers. If your organization uses a matrix hierarchy or another custom hierarchy, you can set up position hierarchy types and then add reporting relationships to positions for each hierarchy type that you set up. For example, Lori Penor is a general manager at Adventure Works and is assigned to the “General Manager” position. Lori manages the development of a product that is used to clean widgets. Lori requires an accountant to help her with the finances for developing the product. Therefore, she has recruited Sanjay Patel to be her accountant. Sanjay reports directly to Kim Akers, but also works with Lori Penor on his work related to the finances for developing the widget cleaner. For the previous example, you would complete the following tasks to set up the working relationship between Sanjay Patel and Lori Penor: 1. Create a custom position hierarchy type called “Widget” to create a hierarchy that includes positions responsible for working on the widget cleaner product. 2. Assign the General Manager position to be the position that the Accountant-A position reports to in the Widget hierarchy. You can use the position hierarchy to view the reporting structure of positions. If you have multiple position hierarchies, you can view the hierarchy for each hierarchy type in the position hierarchy. Also, you can search for a position by position ID or by the name of the worker who is assigned to the position. The position hierarchy is an organizational hierarchy.

Human Resource Management Competencies

04:43
This course will help you understand the necessary competencies and certifications for HR professionals. The combination of observable and measurable knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes that contribute to enhanced employee performance and ultimately result in human resource success. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the leading professional association for HR, recently developed a list of competencies that are arranged in a new model. Here is a summary of the SHRM competency framework. The model was developed based on advice given by more than 1,200 practitioners who participated in focus groups; survey responses provided by more than 32,000 other professionals; and analysis of multiple performance outcomes that were linked back to the competencies. Ideally, awareness and consideration of these competencies should guide the professional development of HR leaders. In addition, individuals’ application of these competencies will often vary as they progress through their HR careers, from the early and middle levels to the senior and executive levels. The broad range of issues faced by HR professionals has made involvement in professional associations and organizations important.
