HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we define Job Evaluation, discuss the importance of evaluation in developing base pay structures, and explore the methods of evaluation for determining the value of jobs in an organization. Job evaluation is the systematic process of determining the relative worth of jobs. The outcome of job evaluation is the development of pay structure. Organizations want their employees to perceive that they are being paid fairly in relation to pay for jobs performed by others within the organization, as well as individuals performing similar jobs in other organizations. Job evaluation allows organizations to appropriately value jobs to build a pay structure through various methods of evaluation. Job evaluation provides the foundation to design base pay structures. Building a base pay structure is the process by which we create a pay structure. When establishing a pay structure, organizations use pay grades, which are groupings of individual jobs that have approximately the same value to the organization. The two general approaches for valuing jobs are job evaluation and market pricing. There are two major schools of job evaluation: market-driven systems and Job evaluation (known as job-worth) systems. Each yield different results. Employers can adopt one of several alternate methods. Market pricing methods have an external focus while Job evaluation methods have an internal focus. A base pay structure is developed using the compensation philosophy and job analysis to drive job evaluation decisions. The results of job evaluation are used to design pay structures, including pay grades and pay ranges. Job evaluation looks at pay levels within the company, and market pricing looks outside the company. Both types of methods use relative comparisons to determine the worth of jobs in an organization. Job evaluation provides the basis for accurate valuation of jobs and the creation of appropriate pay structures.

Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience.This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.

Basing employment decisions on factors other than worker qualifications is generally illegal in the United States. The costs of litigation, penalties, and harm to the company’s reputation can be substantial when violations occur. Equal employment opportunity means that employment decisions must be made on the basis of job requirements and worker qualifications. Unlawful discrimination occurs when those decisions are made based on protected characteristics, which are individual attributes such as race, age, sex, disability, or religion that are protected under EEO laws and regulations. Discrimination remains a concern as the U.S. workforce becomes more diverse. HR professionals need to be sensitive to trends in the workplace that can precipitate negative legal actions. The first type, disparate treatment, occurs when individuals with particular characteristics that are not job related are treated differently from others. Disparate impact is the second type of illegal discrimination. It occurs when an employment practice that does not appear to be discriminatory adversely affects individuals with a particular characteristic so that they are substantially underrepresented as a result of employment decisions that work to their disadvantage. The four key concepts help clarify key EEO ideas that lead to fair treatment and nondiscriminatory employment decisions, business necessity, BFOQ, burden of proof, and nonretaliatory practices. Even though HR professionals and operating managers may follow these actions, EEOC investigations sometimes occur when allegations of retaliation and other forms of unlawful discrimination are advanced. Human resource professionals must develop a plan that enables a response to allegations and protects the interests of both the organization and its employees. The original purpose of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was to address race discrimination in the United States. This concern continues to be important today. To take appropriate actions, employers should be aware of potential HR issues that are based on race, national origin, and citizenship. Pay equity involves the idea that pay for jobs requiring comparable levels of knowledge, skill, and ability should be similar, even if actual duties differ significantly. The influx of women into the workforce has had major social, economic, and organizational consequences. In particular, the growing number of women has led to more sex and gender issues related to jobs and careers. Effective training to prevent sexual harassment ideally includes information about how to report sexual harassment incidents when they occur. Disability discrimination is when a person with a disability is treated less favorably than a person without the disability in the same or similar circumstances. Prior to the ADAA, employers won 90% of challenges regarding whether an individual actually had a disability. Now that argument is essentially moot. Companies no longer aggressively work to disqualify individuals from that status. Age discrimination in the workplace is the practice of letting a person's age unfairly become a factor when deciding who receives a new job, promotion, or other job benefits. In addition to Title VII protections, a number of federal laws have been enacted to address these forms of discrimination. Many of these laws were passed in response to improper company decisions that resulted in unfair treatment of applicants or employees. Dealing with diversity is not about what people can and cannot say. It is about being respectful to others.
