Value Chain Mapping - Introduction to Value Chains

03:23
Businesses require coordination of people, processes, and materials in order to deliver value. Deficiencies in processes or capabilities could be a strategic weakness of the business that opens opportunities for competitors to take market share. Left unchecked, the reduction of market share leads to a reduction of the lifetime value of a customer which results in loss of revenues. Ultimately the company may run out of customer traction, money, then support from investors. The overall purpose of the Value Chain exercise is to get everyone in the company on the same page with respect to the value the company provides to its external stakeholders and customers. It is a bridge between creating the business strategy and executing on that strategy. It is the starting point for aligned scorecards across the business units. It is an indicator where there are poor experiences in the customer journey. It is a start point for a program of change in an area of the business. From an Agile development perspective, it adds needed context which assists in the development of user stories. ------------------- Follow Andrew Rose and Forxia Industries at https://twitter.com/imperialzenta https://www.facebook.com/forxiaindustries/ https://medium.com/@ImperialZenta/ https://www.instagram.com/imperialzenta/ https://www.youtube.com/user/BusinessAnalyzer Ask us about facilitating a workshop for your team! Value Chains versus Supply Chains

15:01
http://www.vidoons.com Lecture given by Professor Andrew Fearne of Kent Business School illustrated with VIDOONS. The concept of the value chain was introduced by Michael Porter in his seminal text 'Competitive Strategy' (Porter, 1995), in which he highlights the potential for different organisations within the chain and different functions within organisations to add value and thereby deliver competitive advantage. However, the term 'value chain' has yet to become cemented in the vocabulary of commercial businesses and government departments. Moreover, the academic literature on value chains and value chain management is distinctly limited, with a supply chain (operations management, procurement, logistics) orientation dominating the business management journals. In essence, the starting point on the journey to sustainable competitive advantage is the change in mindset that places the consumer first and everything else subordinate to their needs and wants. Even those agencies with a mandate to secure behaviour change and influence consumer motivation -- for the benefit of their health or the sustainability of the environment -- an understanding of their perceptions and attitudes is critical. Whether we are trying to build loyalty for our brands or more sustainable communities and environments, changing people's behaviour begins by understanding what motivates them and to do that requires a paradigm shift in the way we view the value chain -- from supply push to demand (value) pull. The Centre for Value Chain Research is here to assist with the journey -- in thinking, decision-making and action. You can find out more about Value Chains from http://www.kent.ac.uk/kbs/

How to run Value Chain Analysis in 2018 - 3 Practical Studies

57:26
How to run Value Chain Analysis in 2018 - 3 Practical Case Studies A presentation on how to run a VCA in light of digital economy re-writing business models The ongoing digital economy has transformed the traditional business models of companies in various sectors with retail, telecom, media, value based healthcare, hospitality and services industry being the prominent ones. Further, unlike the traditional business models where it is comparatively easier to identify the value creating activities which are contributing to the profits of a company, it is highly challenging in digital companies to identify where value is created and how to measure that value. As a result, how to tax the digital economy has become a hotly contested topic among countries today. Thus, in this age of digitization, it has become of utmost importance for companies to understand how to conduct a value chain analysis which is streamlined for digital businesses. This is of increasing relevance as the classical qualitative methods to conduct a value chain analysis such as a Porter’s type of analyses are redundant for the digital businesses as they do not have standard business processes such as manufacturing, research and development, sales, marketing etc. For example, the e-commerce companies such as Alibaba, Amazon, ASOS, Airbnb, Spotify etc. have completely different value creating factors from those of the traditional players operating in these industries. Thus, the webinar will identify and analyze the differences between the value chain of traditional businesses and digitized businesses to understand the factors/processes which add the element of profitability to the digital businesses. The webinar will: 1. Identify and differentiate between the value chains of traditional and digitized businesses of the following industries: - RetailT - Telecom - Media - Value based healthcare - Hospitality - Services 2. Analyze the techniques used for conducting a value chain analysis. - In general, a the benefits of undertaking a value chain analysis beyond compliance related benefits, for example, controversy management. Michael Porter Generic Value Chain

06:32
Diagrammatically explain the Michael Porter’s Generic Value Chain. Value Chain refers to all the activities that create and build value at every step. Thus the total value added to the final product or service is the sum of the individual value added at every step. As per Michael Porter value chain refers to the higher level model of - How the business procures the raw materials - Add value to the raw-materials through various processes - Sell the finished products or services to the end users. Thus value chain analysis is performed at every step of the business with one goal of delivering maximum value, from getting raw-materials to end users. Michael Porter suggested that the activities in an organization should add value to the products and services. And all these activities should be run optimum level. Then only the organization can achieve true competitive advantage. When these processes are run efficiently, the value delivered far exceeds the cost incurred in adding the value. This leads to customer satisfaction and encourage customers to do the business with the organization again and again. The following is the diagrammatic representation of porter’s value chain. As per Michael Porter, the activities within an organization should be split into primary and support activities as follows. - Primary Activities: - Inbound Logistics: Procure the goods from suppliers and use them in producing the end products. - Operations: Raw materials and goods are manufactured into the final product. Value is added as the product moves through the production line during this process. - Outbound Logistics: It deals with the distribution of the finished goods to - Customers - Distribution centers - Retailers - Wholesalers - Marketing and Sales: Establish an effective strategy using marketing mix to target the product to the appropriate customer group. The competitive strategy is clearly communicated to the target group through the promotional mix. - Services: Post sales, there will be support services in the form of - Sales Training - Guarantees - Warranties - Support Activities: - Procurement: Sourcing the best quality raw materials at the best price within budget. - Technological Development: Using the technology to gain competitive advantage. The technology is used in - Availability of the products on the internet so that the customers can access the firm 24/7. - Cost reduction to create value addition - Develop new products through research and development - Production - Human Resource Management: Recruit, train and develop suitable personnel to run the business successfully. The employees should stay motivated and compensated as per the market value if they should continue with the organization and add value. - Firm Infrastructure: The infrastructure such as finance, legal structure and management should be efficient to help the organization realize its goals. If the infrastructure is inefficient it will lead to bad reputation, fines and sanctions. The Industry Value Chain Part 1

06:28
This is the first lecture on The Industry Value Chain from the course The Entrepreneurial Process. All organisations have an Industry Value Chain. This is a diagram that represents all of the players in your industry, from the raw materials right through to the retail stores. The easiest way to remember the IVC is to think of the raw materials as a tree. At the other end of the chain is a wooden chair. All the other organisations in between are links in the chain. In this example, there would also be a timber mill, chair manufacturer and the wholesaler. The Industry Value Chain is a way of drawing the market that an organisation competes in. You may be asking yourself, 'why would I bother drawing the market place?' The answer is simple - by drawing the market you can see how it works, and the more you can see, the better position you will be in to compete. Once you have determined your position in the Industry Value Chain, you are then presented with several choices, or potential strategies: Vertical Integration, Horizontal Integration or Parallel Integration. CI 402 Value Chain Analysis - SAMPLE

03:22
CI analysts often need to explain a competitor’s competitive advantage. How can it do what it does? The proper answer can come only from a Value Chain Analysis (VCA), which closely analyzes the chain of activities performed by a company to identify precisely (and numerically) the sources of differentiation and cost-value advantages. Understanding the value chain of a competitor means accurately understanding the value of its strategic differentiation. The same is true for understanding the threats to your own company’s position.
