Get started mining for gold with these tips! We are Life with Ken and Jane and we were beginners a few years ago. Most of the information out there seems to be for people who already know what they are doing, not for beginners. Here's how we got started.
1) Find a local mining or rock club
We joined the Havasu Gold Seekers
Helpful links to some gold clubs at the Dirt Diggers website (link below)
2) Go to their meetings and talk to members
3) Find someone who is willing to show you the ropes.
4) Attend the "common dig" if your club has one. You can talk to a lot of members and get some pointers from those who are willing to share.
5) Don't invest in a lot of expensive equipment until you know this is the hobby for you. It can be very expensive and many people never find enough gold to cover the costs of this hobby.
At a minimum, we suggest a gold pan, non-metallic scoop, a set of classifiers (1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch (and finer, if budget allows), two or more buckets, shovel, and a hand pick, plus or minus a full size pick.
6) Offer to help a more experienced miner just to gain the experience. If you do, be sure to work out the terms of dividing the gold finds ahead of time. Do not assume it is 50/50, after all, it is their equipment and experience you are using.
7) If you strike out on your own, make sure you know the rules and where active claims are.
8) National groups like the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA) have a lot to offer as well. Check their website for claims in your area, and join GPAA if you plan on mining on their claims.
9) Prospecting shops and coin shops are sometimes a good resource for information. Some sell used mining equipment that can save you a lot of money.
10) YouTube has some great information for gold prospectors, but as a beginner, having a local contact to give you advice is the best bet. Use YouTube for inspiration and filling in the blanks for info that you can't find with your local club.
11) If you find that you really love mining for gold, it's time to learn more about it with a few good references. Check out Jeff Williams video on Getting started. Link below

Thanks Jeff. Love your channel . I wrote you few years ago when I was starting. It’s a bit wet right now, so we are going to get out the metal detector. We want to buy your book on mining out here. We are still rookies. We have a rv with the goldseekers from Havasu AZ. We may never hit it big, but we have big fun. Thanks Jeff
Did I say I love your channel. Flat Stanley is my hero
Hey! I thought I had already joined your channel but, well.. I have now! like seventy one! I would really like to pan for gold, in this stream it looks like you'd lose the gold because the water is coming so fast..
I love this video - my kids and I could probably really get into this as a hobby. Not sure how successful we'd be here in rural Alberta, but the whole process would be fun for my kiddos! :) Wow, 47 ounce nugget. That's a good day!
It's a lot of fun. There are places you can dig for crystals and semi-precious stones too...the crystals are really fun because you pretty much always find something, which is great for kids (and big kids too😁)
I like your channel . Let’s not get lost on YT from our channels. I write and have songs on our channel. I was a singer songwriter for decades. Had a lot of fun......
I played or sang all original songs till I was 52.
Got cancer and had liver transplant. Lucky to be here,
I missed music bad.
Jane talked me into learning guitar at 62. Not real good yet at 64 , but what I have on our channel was written on guitar.
Your very good
It was so great to finally meet you! Julie and I kept talking about how inspiring your story is and how great you both are. Hopefully, our paths will cross again soon and we will get to spend more time together. The time went by too fast at lunch and we felt like we could have talked for many more hours. Take care and keep following HP's guidance!
We said the same thing. We left and went out to camp and it rained like crazy on us.
Looks like no mining till mid March.
We really enjoyed our time and it went by so fast. We also could have stayed longer and talked. It really was fun. And we hope this will happen again. Ken 🤠👍
And cheaper lol. We have lots of equipment. It’s just a hobby. We are out at camp now. It’s to wet to mine but we needed to take care of our propane . I left fridge on with food thinking we were coming back out.
Dang either I am just getting older and lazy, or this is a cold winter for us. It’s 50 degrees, but we are not used to cool wet weather any more.
It’s going to rain big tomorrow which means another month to wait. We love coming out here though. It quite and very secluded. Just our tiny community of miners .
I have only found one nugget of gold. I have mining friends who have found many. Including 2 oz nugget. It was beautiful.
If it quits raining , and keeping the desert wet, maybe I can get out there and mine with Jane. My old partner died this year( 2 oz nugget) he was a master at metal detecting. I miss him and learned a lot. I find lots of 50 caliber shells and bullets. This is where the USA practiced for WW2. For fighter pilots. When I find one of them , I always wonder if that kid made it back home. So I do find treasure. 80 million rounds were shot over what we call our camp now . Take care and thank you.... Ken 🤠👍
That’s the problem, right?! Time...only so much of it we get, so spend it doing the things you love. You two are pretty adventurous so you might enjoy it. I’d say take the opportunity to go with your niece if you can, and check it out. At the very least, you spend some time with family❤️
I am going with the detector myself, due to the bulging disc in my neck...it is a lot of fun. If you detect when snakes are active, wear snake guards. The head phones make it impossible to hear the warning rattles. Snakes are hibernating here for the winter, so no guards for now. Hopefully we will have some detector videos up in a week or so...but I’m a total beginner, so all you will get are some laughs😂
You are in Georgia, yes? GPAA has claims there...several gold mines and one Amethyst mine. There are crystal mines in Arkansas and they are a lot of fun because you pretty much ALWAYS find something at those.
Lol it just keeps raining which is strange for here. Probably global warming, ( not kidding) it could take along time as in millions of years, but things are changing.
It’s raining tomorrow. We won’t be able to mine for at least a month.
So much for mining videos.
I should just look up those rocks you like and try to find one.
Only ten zillion of them in a square mile out here.
Wow talk about lucky! I use to pan for gold up in Vermont in the brook behind my house but only found little specs, It was murder on my back but very therapeutic for the soul. It beats weeding gardens and flower beds all day I must say lol xoxo
Thanks for sharing guys.. Hope you're having a good day.. If I lived closer to gold bearing areas I'd sure like to try.. I know it takes a great deal of work... Living the Dream right? lol.. Full View and Like 36
Another great video, Jane. I just watch because I love watching you and Ken. Don't bother going to my channel nothing new, yet. You two are the best. I will watch anything you put up. 47 ozs amazing. All the best and I hope you find GOLD and lots of it this year. ATB & GB
Life with Ken and Jane lol I bet finding gold is a lot like youtube. You might find a few views here and their and sometimes you get lucky and get a lot of views haha. You could probably do this video and replace gold with youtube lol.
Ya it’s huge! And a nugget can sell 2 to 5 times as much as its weight. Depending on the nugget. In a bidding war on internet it could go for 100 to 200 grand. It’s one of the biggest nuggets found in Arizona.!
I am going to try and find out what happened
They probably are not endangered.
Yes, you can shoot it where we mine and at our camp. I have a Glock 19 with 16 bullets , first four are snake shot.
So if you run into any bad guys sneaking in drugs or people . I have another clip on holster that has GOOD ammo in it. Shoot if you feel bad vibes.
+Life with Ken and Jane BLM is on Holiday @ the present time with no future in sight....We may have to split the Nuggets to get them up & running again....You know the government they're always digging into our pockets....LOL!!
Hi Ken and Jane
It’s Famo59 here 🤠
Eureka Yeee Haaa.👍
Great to see you sharing your wise knowledge to potential new Gold Prospectors on tips on what to expect in this wonderful hobby and even enjoying a camp fire 🔥 with new people you meet while Gold Prospecting..
Great job Jane on talking to a Camera 🎥 as it’s not easy and also to Ken.👍
Great to see you have
Ask Jeff Williams
YouTuber channel as he also just released a book to his premium Patrons to buy.
A fantastic Gold book that he has published himself about how to look for geology indicators for GOLD in the Arizona and Nevada Goldfields Areas..
Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
No kidding. That would sure help me out right now. And just think the nuggets are worth sometimes 2 times their weight in gold. That’s a lot of money. Put it on eBay and some rich guy in New York City would love it in his man cave. Get a little bit of that money back they steal from us on high interest rates
+Life with Ken and Jane writer thinks every Rock we bust open has gold in it LOL it would have so much fun and here in Indiana there isn't much gold obviously there's Gold Everywhere but the only place that I really know of that they claim to have found some decent amount is in southern Indiana I've always wanted to try and pan there I have yet to do it
Not much chance of gold prospecting here in the south east of England but I do enjoy watching people that can. It looks like a really top hobby, or in some cases job. Here's hoping you land a big one and make your fortune. Good luck K&J. 👍😊😎
Thanks Lisa! Had to laugh this morning...Ken was listening to The Susie Channel and I asked him if they ate all the stuff that susie opens...he said No...I said...you ASKED her?...he said...no, Lisa did....Great minds! I was think'n if she eats all that, she either has an amazing metabolism or....um, not. 😂😂😂
