Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…”

With free education and apprenticeships, it is illogical to think that the poor have no chance of moving up a meritocracy. Merit is merit, if you’re willing to work for it you can shape your own reality no matter your background.
Karl Marx disdain for capitalism was shaped on what it at the time, not on what it is today.
Old fashion capitalism was pure and very diminishing of human nature, reducing it into an unite of production that can be discarded at any moment and had near to no rights.
Today's systems of capitalism is followed by various degree of socialism that redistribute a portion of the wealth produced by capitalism and improve standards of living.
For people back then, the amount of pass time they could express their humanity and creativity into, were very scars (work mostly). That's not the case today at all.
If Karl Marx could see the system we have today, i'm sure he would change his mind and burn his own book in order to protect modern society from his own foolishness.
Greed Kills Capitalism. Corruption kills Communism. Both systems are inherently flawed. One gives too much power to Government. The other gives too much power to Corporations. Either way, money and the pursuit of it is a legal form of peonage. Money, when you do not have enough of it, allows you to be controlled by governments and corporations. Without it, you have no shot at a decent life. For most of human history we have survived without it. We can go back.
Both Capitalism and Communism do not work in the long run. To even have a shot at a successful economic structure you need to use a mixture of both in the appropriate situations. Then you need to regulate greed.
Problem with communism that nobody mentions is that it allows mediocrities and often utterly incompetent imbeciles to come to positions of power and decision making, not just in government positions, but in positions of production as well. In capitalism an incompetent manager will be removed from that position by the market, his business will go bankrupt and nobody will bankroll his failure. In communism however, that same incompetent director will remain there for years and years, with the state financing everything.

• Busky, Donald F. (July 20, 2000). Democratic Socialism: A Global Survey. Praeger. p. 4. ISBN 978-0275968861.Communism would mean free distribution of goods and services. The communist slogan, 'From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs' (as opposed to 'work') would then rule.
• O'Hara, Phillip (September 2003). Encyclopedia of Political Economy, Volume 2. Routledge. p. 836. ISBN 0-415-24187-1. it influenced Marx to champion the ideas of a 'free association of producers' and of self-management replacing the centralized state.

• Full Communism - The Ultimate Goal
Communism is a specific stage of socioeconomic development predicated upon a superabundance of material wealth, which is postulated to arise from advances in production technology and corresponding changes in the social relations of production. This would allow for distribution based on need and social relations based on freely-associated individuals.
• Free association (Marxism and anarchism)
+zmajooov , you haven't lived under communism. You lived in a so-called communist country and yet you don't know what communism is? And then you say that I should be embarrassed? There is no state or hierarchy under communism. Do you understand? Maybe English is not your first language. If there's a state or hierarchy, then it's not communism. Just like with veganism, If you have meat or any animal products in your diet, at all, then you're not a vegan. Words have meaning. Maybe you should focus on studying etymology before analyzing political ideologies.
+Michael Mappin I've lived in communism, so unlike you i know what i am talking about. A factory director (or a manager in modern terms) would be placed in that position because he is a good party member, and regardless if he is competent or not he will stay in that position because those factory jobs were also means of social security for the workers. Average man doesn't give a flying fuck if his factory produces 50 metric tonnes of defective goods as long as it meets the production quota and he gets his salary. I would advise you not to talk about things you have no first hand knowledge of in the future lest you embarrass yourself again by saying stupid things like "there is no state under communism".
A manager will be removed much quicker under communism than capitalism because workers are the first ones that are affected by any changes made to the system. That is, if a manager is ineffectual, the workers are going to be the first ones to know about it.
Marx was naive and hipocritical. Naive or evil because he supported the theft of the workers by the state and the imposition over their lives to make them pawns in politicians chess table.
Hypocritical because he didn't do anything, he lived from his wife, a very welthy aristocrat
There is no State under communism.
Karl Marx was against theft from workers. That was the most important part of his work.
Karl Marxi was a very successful writer and editor. Frederick Engels funded him so that he could do research and publishes results. Most scientists are not independently wealthy and require funding.
I like how people still think that Karl Marx was a expert on communism, when he mostly wrote about the flaws of capitalism. He didn’t even fully describe what a communist country would be like.
If people are going to criticize him then at least know what his ideas are about, instead of calling people that you don’t like “commies”
+Gigatony , actually, I think it would be the exact opposite. If he could see modern society, he'd probably say, I told you so ! The richest 1% of the population now owns and controls more than 83% of world stocks. 1% now has more wealth then the bottom 50%.
Also, Capitalism back then was very pure and very different than the system we have today (which is mixed with various level of socialism).
I'm fairly certain that if Karl Marx could see modern society, he would change his mind and burn his own book.
Capitalism will not survival the take over of AI. Everyone will be unemployable because AI will be more efficient. The implementation of UBI will become inevitable. School curriculum will have to be changed because now it only prepares one to be a worker.
People do realize that this entire channel is just a front for tankies right? Right? Don't be dumb, other videos in this series are all slanted toward communist ideals. They just say they are pro-Capitalist to disarm you.
No, you don't. Marxism and Communism killed tens of millions in the Holodomor and WWI, National Socialism killed at least a million Jews all over Europe in WWII, and you come here with some mealy-mouthed retort about "America's monopoly on political control" resulting in millions dead. That's a tenuous grasp on reality you have there. I'm guessing you're a white, upper-middle class college kid that's never really been out in the world. Quite the protected class, out there trying to cry about the only country dedicated to the freedom of a people to govern itself on the planet Earth, with no direct evidence of these dead millions you claim. The dozens of millions dead under Marxism and its bastard offspring are unquestioned. As I stated before, grow a fucking personality.
"we should all be marxists *in the sense of agreeing with his diagnosis of our troubles* "
"but we need to go out and find the cures that *really* will work "
Guys, does he have to spell it out for you?
What a laughable crock! We all have cellphones, and not made in a little village. Alienation is an individual choice. Thanks to the free market, we can find work if we need to move along to another profession. All historical communists keep their lavish lives. If capitalism is unstable, why the mass exodus of people from communist countries? Bringing up Jesus by a God-hating critic is a joke. Thank God most of us have better sense of reality and are comfortably packed in case we get some lunatics trying to shove this drivel into our lives.
If in the future comes a time where machines are autonomous and are so efficient that they make the products we use all on their own without any labour, would it be fair for everyone not to work at all and the products distributed throughout the population? Would a communist society be better in the future in this case?
8:36 - "His writings became the keystone for some of the most important ideological movements of the 20th century", and show the picture of Lenin, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Mao Tsé-Tung....
You've got to be kidding me, right ?
So flawed at the basic level I don't get how even a mentally afflicted teen couldn't see how communism would never work.
I mean 'profit is theft' how strawman can you get. No, consensual work in return for capital gain, with a small percentage going into improving the business in which you do the work for and an even smaller percentage incentivizing the creation of business aka profit for whoever put the years of blood, sweat, and tears into creating a business providing you with a job is not theft.
Wow probably the best explanation in English language I have ever heard, its so wierd, its almost properly correct oO :D
One thing I would add that Marx never said or claimed to have a cure. But he did say that he believed the revolution would come through art... :/
I would say a socialist/capitalist system could to an extent of socialism with capitalism if in fact the government recognized the key points of controlling natural resources and regulating it for free for its citizens as well as mandating Healthcare and education as a free resource available for the citizens which would imply that we are living in a pseudo social capitalist environment to where the government controls the natural resources education and healthcare systems but only in regards to ensuring that it is applicable for everyone and everyone has the capability of benefiting from the system instead of having a capitalist system where some suffer and others are well-off. If natural resources health care and education were free resources socially controlled and provided to humanity it would improve the condition of humanity as well as subjugate a better economic market because people would have more money to spend on their families thus creating a better environment for the world
Well the thing is we are not perfect. There are people who are intelligent, brilliant and there are people who are stupid and selfish. If such heaven where everything is shared exists, then one person's fault is to be blamed on everyone and the success of one person is shared by everyone. This will just produce lazy low-self esteem people. No one will try to do anything and our civilization would just stagnate and eventually the society will just collapse cuz there is no wealth to be distributed and no one will strive to create wealth because why would they?
This video is just communist propaganda and a really bad one btw, you try to trap people into thinking that marx somehow wasnt evil at all but just a nice guy who was trying to point out the problem with capitalism, in fact marx only drive was pure resent and hate. MISS ME WITH THAT COMMUNIST SHIT!
I think you misunderstand the format of the video. The narrarator always argues in favour of the philosophers' views. You can watch their video on Adam Smith, they have complete opposite views on capitalism, and it seems like The School of Life completely change their mind!! No, the video sums up Marx's views on the working conditons and the terrible industrial society of the 19th century, and tries to come up with his solution to the problem.
"Marx's only drive was pure resent and hate" - no I think he honeslty thought communism would achieve overall good to the world. Whether or not it does doesn't matter.
Karl Marx got his ideology of from each according to their ability to each according to their need from the Bible.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
Marx was a philosopher, not an economist. But he had a drinking problem. And when he drank, he pretended he was an economics expert (to hustle free drinks, I suppose).
One day, the gullible son of a rich man overhead one of Marx's drunken, barroom sermons; bought into it hook line & sinker; & gave financial wings to a new economic(?) theory (impaired mind meanderings?). And unthinking people lined-up and followed them down dead-end roads. The only place that Marxism ever worked was in Marx's & Engels' imaginations.
Marxism is economic theory conceived of by a drunken German philosopher, whose only knowledge of economics was derived from barroom chitchats with other drunks. If Marx were alive today, he would likely be an "expert" on sports instead of economics, as sports is the common discourse in today's barrooms.
With little to no formal training in economics or practical experience, Marx's inebriated mind was able to completely detach itself from reality as he conceived of, & pontificated on, his version of modern economic theory.
Marx failed to understand that capitalism was inherently progressive. As new ideas & new technologies hit the marketplace, others either copy and/or improve upon them. As more & more persons rush to the marketplace hoping to take advantage of the new ideas and/or technologies, the marketplace becomes overcrowded, creating abundance & lower prices. When that happens, entrepreneurs create new ideas & new technologies.
But process causes disruptions as people transition from the old towards the new, & there are definite losers. Buggy whip, typewriter, pay phone manufacturers, etc., all got left behind. Marx observed the transitions & thought capitalism was decaying. The myopic Marx, who lacked even basic understandings of capitalism, failed to comprehend that the losers were merely the natural outcomes of progress. Remember Razr phones, Blackberries, & CD-roms?
Marx tried to meld Hegel’s ideas (Hegel was another German philosopher, whom some call the father of Fascism) with socialism (that had never been tried anywhere).
Had people not taken him seriously, Marx would have been laughable. But if people desire mirth, they should look to Groucho, not Karl.
Marxism envisioned both a revolutionary stage and an adjustment period when government would have extraordinary dictatorial powers. But since absolute power corrupts absolutely, no communist nation ever got out of the dictatorial stages of development. The citizens of those dictatorial communist countries suffered loss of freedoms, other repressions, terror, & severely depressed economies.
Ruling elites used Communism as an effective tool for maintaining totalitarian control over large diverse populations. Only Fascism could compete with that.
The focus of today's discussions should be on how people could be so dumb as to subscribe to the pretenses of communism. In hindsight, it's almost inconceivable that people chose to go blindly down paths of utter destitution & destruction.
And if the Southern Poverty Law Center is trying to deflect the Frankfurt School & say it's no big deal, you can bet your bottom dollar it is a big deal.
Communism is evil to the core and always stamps out religion with mass murder and then hopelessly oppresses its remaining population as every nation in the world that has became communist has experienced in the history of the world.
Capitalism is inevitable if you want or need something to make life worth living without total tyranny, every other way has been tried and tested the corpses pile up much faster when people try to find another way.
**And here we have an American, in its natural, ignorant form, preaching about how how the US is the good guy despite committing several atrocities while trying to contain socialism.**
**But don’t worry, they were bombs of freedom**
EXCEEEEEEPPPPTTTT = Marx was fruit cake. and his Ideals were pure crap.
Everyone listened to him, grew a brain, and thoroughly REJECTED his ideology because it was just that- CRAP!
Marx LITERALLY helped Russia run itself into the ground.
Since people vote for capitalism, democracy doesn't speak for the people. Since hierarchies of competence are irrelevant in communism.... I speak for the people and there is no one better than me. OK? My first order is be capitalist. The people have spoken!
Communism is a money and power grabbing tool. Give me all your shit, ill take care of your wife too while you starve. Freedom and communism can't exist together. Giving government all power is the dumbest fucking thing a human could ever do. Fucked up thing is all the people who stick up for communism don't make very good slaves and will be killed shortly after the one person takes power and all your freedom. Communists, do us all a favor and blow your fucking diseased brains out!
I have noticed that those who agree with the ideas expressed in this video seem to exercise critical thinking while those who arrogantly disagree seem to be outraged by a mention of anything non-capitalism. Be careful of moral outrage without being critical.
Marx was influenced by the French monarchy . Lol no one would understand unless they somehow lived it... Humans certainly wouldn't want Marxism as well it sucks.. Human need to have a unique property. Besides each human have different ability regardless of being male or female. It is somehow delusional
Ideology based on no scientific human ability. You can see it in many countries with gender discrimination where they see females from different social background as the same. It's retarded actually. Like what do women need what are "the needs" for female like everyone is identical . I tell you, it sounds like Socratic retarded thinking
I know that my comment will only read a little, but believe me, those of you who read it are really lucky.
In a political compass, the economy is only a horizontal axis, where there are two poles, left (socialism) and right (capitalism).
But there is a vertical axis which also has two poles, namely authoritarian and libertarian.
So far, the practice that we have carried out and know is both authoritarian socialism and capitalism which put its interests in politics, which ultimately became authoritarian.
There is right-wing libertarian and libertarian communism that we have not yet tried, where we run it in a far more democratic way.
I don't mean to be arrogant, but believe me, you haven't learned anything to understand other democratic alternatives outside this dichotomy.
You can check this website: https://www.politicalcompass.org
Communism works off the fear of people. There's a reason why socialism and communism has never worked in a single country society and never will. There's a reason why communist nations other than weapons have NEVER given ANYTHING productive to the world to push us further to make life better. All communism is the ideology that if you are the greatest and hardest working human you get paid 30k a year while the guy next to you someone who doesn't do anything at all gets paid 30k a year. Man seems weird why so many people left the soviet bloc and fled the ussr maybe because it's a fucking joke of an idea. Fuck communism
If alienation was a problem then premium brands like Rolls Royce and koenigsegg would be dead a long ago, if something worth paying we'll pay, if his theory starts to apply on every company than you have to pay ridiculous amount of money for brands like Toyota.
Without market competition and a risk vs. reward component, there is no incentive for people to put in more effort than necessary. Rich people get rich because they provide what the masses want. They work smart, not just hard.
a Utopian world would be Communist by technicality (on paper)
but making the government the sole "capitalist" thereby creating a monopoly..... one person or group of people controlling ALL the land, money and product is a recipe for power drunkeness and disaster....he who has the "stuff" calls the shots. what happens if that person is not exactly morally together?...which is what happened
capitalism is better because it isn't violent, when you respect the 3 rights of the human being, those which it has been born with, life , property and liberty then you have capitalism. Communism in the other hand, there has no way to be implemented without the use of violence, because it doesn't repect any of the right a human has. That is why karl marx was one of the worst sociologists, economists of the human history. He did not undestand the human nature.
